Hard Drive Volume Needs Repair...........Please Help

My Power/PC G4 with dual 1.25g processors with OS 10.4.11, is running very slow. I get the spinning beach ball whenever it tries to load anything from disk. I used disk utility to verify the hard drive. I got the following message;
Volume Header needs minor repair
The Volume needs to be repaired
1HFS Volume Checked
Volume needs repair.
I followed the instructions in Disk Utility to start my computer from my OS 10 install disk. The Disk Utility instructions gave the following instructions;
1. Insert OS 10 Disk
2. Hold down option key and start computer
3. Select Install and click arrow
4. Open Disk Utility
5. click install
6. open disk utility and click to repair
I followed the above but once I did step 3, I was on my way to do a new install.
Followed everything asked for on the screen, the next click was to start install.
Never once anywhere did I have the option for #4 above (open disk utility). I dont know what I am doing, just following directions. I aborted the operation as I did not want to clobber my installed 10.4.11.
Please tell me what I did wrong or how to get Disk Utility running from my OS10
install disk so I can run disk utility repair.
Thanks
Paul

Click here and follow the instructions. If there's no Disk Utility option in the Installer menu, use fsck.

  • Hard Drive Volume Needs to be Repaired - Please help!

I actually posted this question before, so if you happen to read this for the second time, I do apologize for that. The reason I am posting again is because I couldn't solve the problem, and when I called Apple care today, they asked me to extend my Applecare to 3 years first or pay a one-time $49.99 fee (I bought my mbp in May). I understand this process, but right now I do not have this budget so I need to find help here. I really appreciate all your help in advance.
I ran Disk Utility the other day, and while verifying and repairing the "Disk permissions" seemed to work okay, when I clicked "Verify Disk," a pop-up windon said (I don't quite understand what the following message means):
    First Aid failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit
....and the disk utility screen showed:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
However the "Repair Disk" buttom is faded grey and inactive, so I couldn't repair the HD volume right away. I tried to insert the Installtion CD and started up the computer by pressing down "c" in order to start up and repair the HD using the CD. However, even though I was finally able to see the active "Repair Disk" buttom in the "install mode" with the CD inserted, when I clicked the repair buttom, it still showed the exact same message as I mentioned before (the bold texts). I then guess I couldn't repair the volume HD this way either.
The other thing I don't understand is I actually ran the Apple Hardware Test using the installation CD too, but after both normal and extended check, it said my HD is fine - there's no problem found. So I really don't know what is causing the Disk Utility message and the HD volume failure.
Could someone give me sugesstions what to do to fix the problem? I really really appreicate all kind of assistance! Thank you very much!

Claire, the message you received when you ran Disk Utility's disk repair routine from the Installation Disc 1 simply means that there are problems with your drive that Disk Utility can't fix.
It's possible (but not certain) that the current full version of Tech Tools Pro <http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=164&Itemid=8 5> could repair your hard drive. But you would have to buy the application.
For no-cost approaches here are two suggestions:
1 It's possible (but not likely) that simply doing an Archive & Install from your Installation Disc 1 might fix the problem. If you don't have a convenient way to back up all your data to an external drive or DVD, it may be worth a try.
2 A complete erase (using the "zero" option in Disk Utility), followed by installation of the OS from your Installation Disc 1 should get the drive back in good shape (as it passed Hardware Test). This will of course erase all your applications and data files, so they should first be backed up somehow.
    Good luck.

  • Hard Drive Failure?! Please help!!

I just purchased the 160 GB LaCie Mini external harddrive for my Mini. However I noticed when I play video files from the drive they appear choppy and blurred. I verified the disk in Disk Utility and got this message:
    Verifying volume “160”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid extent entry
The volume 160 needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
         Volume needs repair
Then when I tried to repair it I got this message:
    Verify and Repair disk “160”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid extent entry
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
I've attempted to erase the contents of the drive with zero out erase but I keep getting errors when I load files back onto the drive.
AND NOW MY INTERNAL HARD DRIVE HAS A "FATAL HARWARE ERROR"! aaahhh!! The S.M.A.R.T Status reads "Failing".
Why are both my internal and external drives suddenely failing?? And what should I do?! Someone please help!!

SMART status is a pretty reliable indicator of what is going on. You should back up your irreplaceable files as soon as possible.

  • Satellite A65 Hard Drive Problem...PleasE Help!

When I try to boot my computer (Sarellite A65-S126) I get the following message,....It keeps scrolling down my computer.
For Realtek Rtl8139(x)/8130/810x PCI Fast Ethernet Controller V2.13 (020326)
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F Existing RXE ROM
I have looked in the BIOS and the boot order is sound.  Also I have tried to boot directly from the HDD and it will not do it.  Also, I looked in the BIOS and it does not recoginze the hard drive "no hard drive".  I have heard that what the computer is trying to do is boot from the internet connection....but it should be booting from my hard drive.   IS the drive shot????  If not, I can not repair it via the orginal disk I got with the computer.  It will not format the hard drive because it does not see the hard drive......I REALLY do need help....my daughter's school work is on it and it is the computer she uses to go to school on....home schooled....  HELP PLEASE....

The hard drive has failed.  If you are very lucky, you may be able to recover some of all of the data by removing the drive and putting it in an USB external drive housing.  That system has a PATA drive so be sure and get one for an IDE drive.  HERE is an example from NewEgg.  You can then plug the drive into another computer's USB port and see if you can recover any of the data.  You can replace the drive in the computer with a 2.5" PATA laptop drive such as the Seagate Momentus line.  Toshiba has replacement drives up to 250GB.  You can then restore the system with your recovery disks and hopefully you will have been able to recover something from the old drive.  Consider that you've had an object lesson in the reasons to keep current backups of important data.

  • Crashed Hard Drive!!! Please Help!

Hi everyone, this is my first time on Mac Support, and I am in desperate need of help!
I have a black Macbook with OS 10.4.11 with the 80gig hard drive. Unfortunately the hard drive crashed and I did not back it up. Here's how it happened:
I bought a new hard drive to upgrade and installed it in the computer without installing an OS. The original hard drive I put in a SATA enclosure, and booted from that externally. While I was using the computer, the USB connection was interrupted by accidentally wiggling the cord at the connection point. The computer froze, and when I tried to reboot, the computer recognized the drive as the bootable drive, but could not boot, turned to a blue screen with the loading wheel just continuing forever, and then after about 5 minutes the computer would shut off. After taking it to my University tech center, they could not boot from it, or repair the disk. However, they got a few files off it, including mostly program files, but couldn't get any User files, which is what I desperately need and include hundreds of hours of music production that I moronically did not back-up.
When I ran Disk Utility to repair the disk, this is the message I got:
Verify and Repair disk “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid index key
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
    Repair attempted on 1 volume
1 volume could not be repaired
So what do I do now? Is this a physical problem or an internal coding problem? Will DiskWarrior do anything for me? or should I pay the $1000 to have DriveSavers recover my files?...hopefully not!
Any help with this would be great!'
    Thanks,
    Alden

I can not say for sure that DiskWarrior can fix it....but that is exactly the kind of problem it was made for.....
You might run Apple's Disk Utility several times....I have seen Disk Utility slowly repair a drive... a little at a time....fixing a few more errors each time it is run....
Only you know what your data was worth too you....I hope something works for you....

  • Disk Utility and Disk Warrior error on internal hard drive....PLEASE HELP!!

After running idefrag on my internal Western Digital 120gig hard drive. The drive did not appear after I rebooted my mac. I opened Disk Utility and the drive is there but grayed out. I used "repair disk" under First Aid and it gave me this error:
Verify and Repair disk “HD 120”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Then I tried using Disk Warrior 3.0 to rebuild and it gave me this error:
error ""WD 120 GB" cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged. The disk was not modified (2155, 2179)".
I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this, but I need help as most of my important data is on this hard drive. What else can I do?
    I am on a g4 quicksilver with 10.4.3 installed.

Sorry to hear about your problem but unless you are working with very large files such as with video editing, etc., using a defrag utility is not required with OS X and no defrag utility should be used on a hard drive without a backup first.
The current Disk Warrior version for Tiger is 3.0.3 and if Disk Warrior cannot repair the drive/directory, it must be in bad shape which was caused by using idefrag.
You can try using a data recovery utility such as Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering) which includes a free trial version.

  • External hard drive won't install, Please Help

I just purchased this same external hard drive, 3/7/2011.  I hooked everything up via my USB, put in the installation CD, got the Drive Set-up window, clicked on Backup Software and got a message "C:\DOCUMEN~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\pft48F~tmp\" and "Access denied" with the only choice of clicking on "OK"; when I clicked on OK, a small window titled "unpacking backup software" appears in the upper left corner; it got about halfway through, stopped and I got an alert from my McAfee security program that it detected a trojan and removed it. Then 3 gauges appear in the upper left corner and the message "Toshiba Backup Software Installation an error occurred during the move data process of the file REFILERW.SYS!" appears and I click OK again then the Toshiba Drive Setup window appears and a green checkmark is NOT next to Backup Software. However, if I go ahead and click on the other 2 items to install, Drive Monitor Software and Power Save Software, a green checkmark appears next to them. When I then click Exit I get my regular startup screen. The Drive Monitor appears in My Programs but nothing else.  Did Toshiba send me a trojan on their program?
When I checked out my McAfee to see what the name of the trojan was,it says: Artemis!8CBE6FC5C432
I'm not a technophobe and am just lost; I don't know what to do or where to get answers. I emailed Toshiba Tech Support twice but didn't get anything back.
Please, can someone out there help me?

It would be a false positive.  Some antivirus programs look for virus like activity, and that makes them much more prone to errors.
Get rid of McAfee's and switch to Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free and very good.   Security essentials is a very light program, so you will not notice any slow downs when it is running like the bloatware security programs are known for and you will have far fewer false positives.
    http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
When I used to manage a PC repair shop, we used to have people come in and pay us to get rid of McAfee's and Nortons on their systems because they would slow the computers down so much, and the false positives were making them miserable when trying to install programs that they knew were safe.

If anyone konws how to help let me know please and thank you.

Agree with baltwo, though even if you have saved the install app I wouldn't use it unless its been used to install a known good copy of the OS already.
In your case, that probably means start fresh:
Restart the computer, holding down 'command' and 'r'. When the recovery disk window shows, choose 'Reinstall Mac OS X'.

  • Windows 7 needs repair, please help !

Hello. I'm a desktop PC user of Windows 7 Professional with service pack 1 on 32 bits. I've tried to resize my partitions using Aomei and Paragon partition managers. I would take away some space (10Gb) from non-system drives, and then try to extend my C
drive, since it's gotten nearly full. Yet Disk Management in Windows never let me to extend C with an unallocated space I took from D. So I used these programs. Now, I had done it once before, successfully. Such programs require restart, to perform a PreOS
actions. Okay, I let it, and when it finished, it came up on the boot with a message:
'Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
    1) Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer,
    2) Choose your language settings, and then click ''Next'',
    3) Click ''Repair your computer''.
Now, since I did not possess such CD/DVD, and since I'm a student of Electronics in Belgrade, I have a privilege to download Microsoft products for free, for studying purposes. I used my mom's laptop and burned a downloaded Windows 7 Professional with SP1
32bit (.iso) successfully. The DVD is correct. Then I insert the DVD into my desktop computer and nothing happens, not even when I restart my computer. And I've restarted it quite a few times. What am I supposed to do now ? Please help me. (:

    Hi,
How's everything going? Have you taken Rick's questions into consideration?
Have you tried to use Last Known Good Configuration as mentioned in the this link, it will bring your system to a state when most recent system settings worked correctly.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/using-last-known-good-configuration#1TC=windows-7
Regarding to the iso (burned to DVD), make sure to boot your PC from DVD (by press a button like F8, it depends on your PC model, you can refer to the PC user manual).

  • Dead Hard Drive?!? Please help!

I have posted earlier on here when I was having problems. I did an archive & install & thought I had the issue fixed. Now it won't boot up at all. When I boot from the OSX Install CD or DiskWarrior, sometimes the hard drive won't show up. Sometimes it does, but when I go to fix errors or permissions or replace directory it says can't unmount disk. Ugh!

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Is this a PRAM battery issue or a HD issue? Is there any way to fix it or get my files off the HD?
    Please help!

What's the easiest way to get info off here... I have DiskWarrior but don't see a way to recover files. I have photos that I haven't gotten off & now it is really gone, I think. I have another computer coming & want to see what I can do to get my files.
Any good recovery companies out there?

when you replaced the hdd was it formated to "mac osx extended journaled" if not, there lies your problem.

  • External Hard Drive Read Only. Please Help!

So I have looked for answers and I can't find one. I need help ASAP cause I have to edit pictures and I have no space.
Ive read that I have to format my ED but it was working just fine. I don't want to erase none of the backups in there. Theres about 900GB already used.

Looks like your HD is full. When something is full, the only way to make room is to delete stuff.
Formatting will wipe it clean by removing everything in it.
For alternatives, go into the HD and delete stuff selectively you no longer need to make room.
The only other option is to buy a new HD.
With that said, I see no indication the drive is failing. Only that it is full.  Unless you know for a fact there should not be enough data in it to have only 88GB left. I don't see anything overtly wrong with it.

  • Partitions on external hard drive. Need advice, PLEASE!

Can someone explain to me about partitions on EHD's. I have just installed Leopard, and at present I have 3 partitions on my LaCie 250Gb Firewire external drive. I need to create enough space to allow TimeMachine to do a backup (about 120Gb).
I know that I have to use Disk Utility to do this, but can someone tell me if there is a minimum number of partitions to have on a volume like this? What would be your recommendation?
Also, could someone tell me if it is possible to run Tiger on an external drive? Or would that have to be run from the Mac HD? I have some software and games etc that will only run on Tiger. A step by step guide would be much appreciated.

Hi! You can have many partitions on an external drive. One for Leopard, Tiger, Panther, OS9 (if capable) data, pictures, music....you get the picture. I'm not sure what you are using the partitions for now but remember usually reformatting into another partition scheme erases everything. As an example you can have a partition for Time Machine, another for the Tiger OS, and one for a Leopard bootable clone for use in an emergency. I'd recommend that if you plan on changing your current scheme that you do so with disk utility in Leopard. Create your partitions in the disk utility and then clone to the partitions. When you choose two or three partitions then you can grab and drag the bars to change each one's size. Again remember that if you already have a Tiger partition that reformatting will erase the data.
In Leopard open the disk utility and on the left side you'll see a disk drive such as 279.5 GB Maxtor and then listed under that and indented to the right will be the volumes or partitions with the names you have assigned to them. To partition click on the drive itself (not the volumes under it) and then on the right side of the pane will be listed first aid, erase, partition, raid, and restore. Then click on partition and the pane will show the current partition scheme such as only 1 volume (partition) or as many as you currently have. In Leopard you can resize the partitions but that gets a little complicated. If you click on current the tab pops up listing up to 16 partitions that can be created. When you select the number you want and then click apply the new scheme will be formatted erasing the current data on the entire drive. You can assign the names you want to the volumes such as Time Machine, Emergency Drive or whatever you want. Just remember you're erasing the drive so be sure that's what you want to do. Resizing partitions depends on how full they are, what size you want to change them to and takes some practice to master. I typically have soemthing like the following:
300 gig Main Drive with Leopard
300 gig drive with bootable clone of Leopard as a backup
400 gig drive with 2 partitions (1 for time machine and 1 for an emergency
Leopard clone with no added apps and only
    utilities such as TechToolPro.
120 gig drive with three partitions
    1. a previous system (Panther in my case)
    2. a 9.2.2 System
    3. a data partition for a quick data backup of something important
Your scheme can vary but give it some thought before you embark on something you're not going to want to change tomorrow. Tom
