Hard drive won't open on double-click

Had to have my hard drive repaired last week and now it won't open on a double click. Applications open from dock, but in order to open documents I have to go through Finder. Is this just a new routine or is it standard. It is more tedious than double-clicking.

If I understand you well, you can access files inside the HD by opening a finder window and then, using the sidebar, selecting the HD...
Have you tried selecting the HD (single click) and then issuing an open command (File->Open, or command-O)?

  • My DVD drive won't open when I click the button

    Hi there
I'm hoping someone can help me.
My DVD drive won't open when I click the button.
I've tried clicking on eject on the DVD Drive icon in My Computers and it comes up with an error message.
I think I deleted cookies the other day. Could that have anything to do with the problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really don't want to send my laptop away to a technician.

    Hi
Try to open the CD/DVD drive manually.
Near the eject button you will find a small hole.
You could use a small object like staple and could push it carefully into this hole.
Usually this should helps to open the drive manually.

  • 2013 excel won't open when double clicked

    Hello,
I am using window's 7. I am having an issue with excel. An excel file will not open when double clicked.
    Thank you,

    Hi,
Does this issue happen to a certain Excel file or all Excel files?
If this only happen to a certain Excel file, where is the file stored? We may try to open a blank Excel file, and then open the certain Excel file via File > Open and then navigate to the file to see the result.
If this issue happens to all Excel files, please go to Task Manager, click Processes tab and make sure Excel.exe is not listed there. If Excel.exe is listed, end the process and then try to opening Excel file to see the result.
If above doesn't fix the issue, we may also try to
run a repair of your Office installation to see the result. It seems that the method fixed a similar issue for a number of users according to another thread.
Please have a try and let me know the result.

  • My Time Machine won't back up and files won't open when double clicked.

I'm not sure if these are related, but recently my MacBook Pro has been acting much more sluggish than usual.
To start, I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.
Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.
Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.
I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files.  I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available.
    Think you all can help?
    Thanks so much.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Wrong file icons - files won't open when double-clicked

    Hello,
I have a the following problem on a powerbook.
Most picture files (JPGs, but not bearing the .jpg extension) are not reckognised any more by the system.
In fact, they bear an icon of Terminal exec (a black square with a green "exec" note in the corner).
When double-clicked, they don't open in Preview any more, they act as a terminal app, and won't launch, obviously.
The only way to open them is to go the hard way : in Preview, File menu, Open...
Another way is to change their names by including the ".jpg" extensions, which seems to wake up the id from the system and place back the correct icon and app link. But we have 1000's of pictures...
    Painful.
We tried rebuilding OS X desktop, repairing permissions, and update prebinding (using the excellent ToolsX 3.4). No results yet.
    Any idea someone?
    Thanks,
    Powerbook 17 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Have you tried selecting a picture, doing command i, for info, then in the info window setting the app for that file as Preview then clicking Change All?
Does ToolsX have a "Rebuild Launch Services database" function
or an update for "whatis" and "Locate" databases?

  • Iphoto from external hard drive won't open on another macbook

My iphoto wont open from my external hard drive on my other MacBook.  It says: The photo library will need to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade.
    1) Why do I need to upgrade?
    2) Will I still be able to open this external HD on my old macbook?
When I click upgrade it says: there is a problem accessing one or more files in your iphoto library.  Do you want iphoto to repair permissions for this library for you?
    3) What does this mean?
4)Can I open this external hard drive iphoto library on a Dell laptop or will it always have to be on a Mac?
    Thank you for your help!

You do not give enough information to give a total answer - but basically it sounds like you have two Macs with different version of iPhoto - newer version of iphoto have to upgrade the iPhoto library to use it and once they do older versions  can not use it - that is the meaning of the warning
The photo library will need to be upgraded to work with this version of iphoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iphoto after the upgrade.
Pretty clearly stated by the warning
    so
1 - because you probably have a newer version of iPhoto on your "other MacBook"
    2 - Probably not
3 - you have a permissions problem that needs to be repaired - often this is caused by having the iPhoto library on an improperly formatted drive - the iPhoto library must always be on  a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - what format is the drive the iPhoto library is on?
4 - no - if the drive is properly formatted the Dell can not open it and if it can it has no idea what to do with it - the iPhoto library must be used by iphoto on a Mac - if you want to have your photo on a PC you have to export them to a drive the PC can read

  • Older iphoto on external hard drive won't open in Mavericks os

I have my iphoto on an external hard drive that I would open on two different computers. I recently upgraded my imac to Mavericks and now I can't open the library stored on the external HD; it's indetectible. When I click iphoto icon on the imac, the existing (internal hard drive) library opens. I *believe* before the upgrade I had to choose which library to open, but it was such an intuitive process I can't remember exactly what or if I had to do anything specific now. The library still functions fine on my macbook air, which is running iphoto 9.2.3.
Can I upgrade the iphoto on the external hard drive?? I've been reading tons of threads but haven't found a solution that sounds like it fits my issue. and of course i'm hesitant to just try anything as I don't want to lose all the photos (and I like how they're organized).
    Thanks for any advice!

So can i update the library on the external HD so that it can be used with 9.5.1??
Probably - I'm still not totally clear on what you ahe, what you have done and what yu are doing
this statement is worrysome and more information is certainly needed
I recently upgraded my imac to Mavericks and now I can't open the library stored on the external HD; it's indetectible.
    and
If I update the MBA to Mavericks with the EHD attached will the iphoto be updated to 9.5.1??
If you also update iPhtoo to version 9.5.1 on the MBA then both computers can access the 9.5.1 iPHoto library while the EHD is connected to them

  • PDF file won't open with double click

    Mac OSX 10.6.8/Acrobat 10.1.3.
Suddenly pdf files won't open with a double click, I now have to open Acrobat and file>open.
Also, once they're open, they won't close by clicking the red close dot, I now have to go to file>close.
    Very frustrating!

Even reinstalling doesn't work with the standard Creative Suite installer. Except for the double-click bug, Acrobat doens't respond to dock-tasks either, like <right-mouse-click> on dock icon and select <quit>.
In this version of Acrobat, the repair function doen't seem to exist anymore. Sadly....
So the problem keeps existing, even with the laterst 10.1.4 version.

  • Master pages won't open with double click

What am I missing? I've used Indesign for years. Have CS6 now. When I double click on a master page, it won't open. This happens with old documents and with new ones as well.
    Barb

I realized that I can't open anything with a double click, not just InDesign. In searching for an answer, I found an answer. When I installed a new mouse, I turned the speed on everything to high, fast, super speedy. When I slowed down the double click speed, I could open anything. Whew!
I solved the problem.  If you go to System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse and Trackpad -  You can set the speed of the double click to be much slower.

  • Folders on desktop won't open with double click

I have just purchased a Mac Pro running 10.9.5. I downloaded from disc (external drive) several folders to my desktop, but I cannot open them with a double click (or single click). I am using an LG IPS display. Does anyone know whats going on?

Thanks. This is something I didn't know about. However, I also was able to open folders using open from the file menu in finder. Either of these is helpful sometimes, but unfortunately, I have found that I have no double click function at all -  which I need for tool commands in a number of apps.
Apple support has advised me to buy a new mouse to see if the mouse is bad. So I guess I'll do that before I get any deeper into this. Thanks again.

  • Message window won't open after double-clicking message in list

When I re-launched Mail, I suddenly lost the ability to open a message by double-clicking it in the message list window. I can view the message in the preview window at the bottom of the list, but without opening the message itself, I seem to lose the ability to reply, forward, etc.
Coincidentally, in case the problem is related, I also noticed that Safari no longer opens a window after launch. Going to "File" in the menu bar and selecting "New Window" produces nothing.
Anyone have a clue about fixing these?

Read the following article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
In particular, be sure to verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), and to read this as well:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
In addition to the utilities mentioned there for cache cleaning, you may also consider OnyX or Cache Out X, which are free.
More specifically, this could be caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
And this is how you should proceed to reset Launch Services with OnyX, for example:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.

  • Files, icons, docs won't open with double click

Suddenly when I double click, nothing happens. I have to use keyboard commands to open files, icons, docs, folders, etc. Did I inadvertantly set something? I have a Mighty Mouse and this was never a problem before. Thanks
    Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Try cleaning your mouse:
Use a clean lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water. Wipe the ball and the surrounding area, making sure to rotate the ball itself to ensure complete coverage. If the scrolling feels rough or if the scroll ball isn't scrolling up, down, or side-to-side, hold the mouse upside-down and roll the ball vigorously while cleaning it to help dislodge any particles that may have collected on the internal hardware. You can also give it a good (but not too god) whack to dislodge stubborn particles.
Let us know if that helps,
    Miriam

  • Icon won't open via double click

For months, have several icons on right side of screen. Until a few hours ago, could open these icons with double click. Now, must first highlight icon, then go to Finder/File/Open to Open. Don't know why these icons "froze". Annoying! Help!

First of all, have you tried restarting? If you've laready done that, navigate to ~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

I'm not sure if this is a Snow Leopard problem or an iMac problem but it seems since I loaded Snow Leopard files and programs will not open if I double click on them, I have to right click then choose open. Does anyone know why this should happen.
