Hard drives in dual dock keep ejecting
I had 2 spare 3.5" 2TB internal drives, new, so I bought a dual dock/enclosure to put them in to connect it to my Mac Mini for an easy 4TB of storage.
I bought this one, as it claimed to be Mac compatible:

All seemed well, both drives show on my OS X desktop as 2 separate drives. However after a few weeks, I noticed they had both disappeared from the desktop in OS X (i.e. ejected). There was no usual OS X warning about not ejecting the disc properly, so I assume they were ejected by the OS.
The unit was still powered up ok, so after unplugging/plugging back in, they showed up again, but the same thing happened after a week or so.
I tried a different USB3 cable, same problem.
I contacted Inateck, who said it must be faulty and kindly sent me a new unit. Exact same problem.
Any idea what's going on?

I am looking to have all my files in one place as i am hopelessly disorganised. I know the online clouds are a good solution (used Dropbox at work and uni for 3 years) however i am wanting to create my own 'dropbox/icloud' at home. So whenever i get back home with my laptop, any work i have been working on whilst out that day is updated to the timecapsule, and then ultimately as i turn on the other devices, they update to those newer versions of the files. Please tell me that the 3TB time capsule i have can do this, otherwise it feels rather overpriced as a wireless storage device?
Another note (to those in the know) If i am to be working on large files (REVIT/SOLIDWORKS/KEYSHOT/CREO/AUTOCAD) - is the timecapsule connection good enough to support editing and updating these files?
I know i may be asking a question that many have before, but as a bit of a technical novice I wanted a clear-cut answer to my specific circumstances. Your help is greatly appreciated.
(*can i use this WD hard-drive that is connected to the Time Capsule as a back up? so that the time machine back-ups/any back ups are also backed up onto this one? can the WD be a backup for the TC?)

can not transfer date from one hard drive to another, I keep getting an error because I have two of the same file names and one file name is in caps and I cant change the file name. My original external has an error and needs to be reformatted but I dont want to lose this informations its my entire Itunes library.
Sounds like the source drive is formatted as case sensitive and the destination drive is not. The preferred format for OS X is case insensitive unless there is a compelling reason to go case sensitive.
Why can't you change the filename? Is it because the source drive is having problems? If so is this happening with only one or two or a few files? If so the best thing would be to copy those over individually and then rename them on the destination drive.
If it is more then you can do manually and you can't change the name on the source you will have to reformat the destination as case sensitive.
Btw this group is for discussion of the Support Communities itself, you;d do better posting to Lion group. I'll see if a host will move it. -
Am I correct that you can no longer place a hard drive in the Dock without it becoming a Stack?
I became very used to clicking on a hard drive in the dock and having a Finder window pop up.
I suppose I can go back to having the drives show on the Desktop, but I don't like the clutter.

There are no stupid questions here!!
The only way I've found to create an alias of a hard disk is to to select the drive on the Desktop and choose File>Make Alias.
If you don't have your hard drives showing up on the Desktop, use Finder>Preferences>General to set them to show.
Honestly, I've found creating a stack containing my hard drives to be less useful than I originally thought it would be.
Overall, I think the Finder makes a better Finder than folders or drives in the Dock ever did.

I just got my MacBook Pro a month ago. However I am realizing I need more hard drive space due to aps and programs. I use am external but am concerned about the space. Is there a way to upgrade my hard drive from apple and keep my warranty valid?
That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

Help would be appreciated! Before I upgrade my 10.6.8 OS X I need to back up files. Trying to reformat a WD 1TB external hard drive but my utilities keeps saying "choose scheme from volume pop up menu.." also says "this partition cannot be modified." What can I do?! Select the Top Most Entry for that drive, it will be the drive model # and have the size listed, then go to the Partition tab and select One Partition from the Partition Layout area drop down. Then select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format, if that is the format you want to format it AS. Then click the Options button near the bottom of that windows and select GUID as the Partition Table. Close the options screen and clcik the Apply button.

If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space [externak hard drive], I mean I have to delete my hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using it with new information?
Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk. -
How to deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping
was curious if anyone one knows how to temporally deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping every 30mins and have to wait 12 second for the drive to spin up and wait for the beach ball to stop spinning. Getting really aggravating.... Thanks
The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32. -
I have seen so much response about the Mountain Lion update slowing down computers. I am updating from Mac OS x 10.6.8. What can I do to ensure the upgrade will go fine? Do I unplug my external hard drive before installing, or keep it plugged in?

There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac -
External Hard Drive not recognize after not ejecting properly
i have Macbook Pro 2011 8GB RAM, 1 TB Hard drive OSX Mavrick. i recently ejected my back up drive but it was not a properly ejected now when i plug in the computer it doesnt come up as hard drive. it shows up in the disk utlity but it doesnt open any one know how to solve this issue please its my backup drive and i dont want to loose m data
Thanks1. press command + space (or click on your spotlight search button near the top right corner)
2. Search and Open Disk Utility
3. Plug in your external drive
4. Click on the drive in the left panel
5. Click the repair button near the bottom right of the window
6. Wait for the disk to be verified and repaired
7. Eject the external drive
8. Unplug and replug the drive back in and then see if it is then accessible.
9. If still not accessible repeat steps 2-4 then hit the mount button in the toolbar of the window. It will be in between the burn and the eject button.

I lost my logic 8 pro serial number. I can't find the booklet that comes with the serial number. How can retrieve this? I upgraded from logic pro 7. I changed hard drives and now it keeps asking for the serial number. But I can't find it. Where can I request it? Thanks!
If you still have the receipt or other proof of purchase, you can ask Apple to send you the serial. Otherwise, bad luck mate.. Good news is, you can now buy Logic Pro 9 from App Store for just 199 USD

Why are external hard drives and similar continually self-ejecting under Yosemite?
When are Apple going to sort out the problem of external hard disk drives and other similar devices continually self-ejecting under Yosemite. This is a problem I have had ever since I upgraded my 21.5" iMac from Mavericks to Yosemite last year, and I when I upgraded to a 27" iMac last November with Yosemite pre-installed the same issue occurs. I cannot even update my TomTom SatNav because it keeps ejecting while the update is trying to process. I cannot use a WD external drive for backup purposes, and even memory sticks eject. This problem has only started with Yosemite and I do not believe I am the only one experiencing it as it has been aired on the communities website previously. I wish Apple would tackle this problem and issue a Yosemite update that resolves the issue. My present Yosemite version no.is 10.10.3.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Ever since I updated to OSX version 10.9 on my iMac, it is disconnecting all of my media hard drives and giving me the message: "Disk Not Ejected Properly." My hard drives are connected to my iMac through a Nitro Professional 8-port Firewire 800 hub/repeater, and a Firewire 800 cable from the Nitro hub connects to the back of my iMac. This configuration has been working fine for over a year. Suddenly, and immediately after performing the update about a week ago, the drives won't stay connected for more than a few seconds before the iMac disconnects from my drives. I've tried restarting and reconnecting many times and the same thing keeps happening.
I have a new MacBook Pro (one month old) that I've been using temporarily to work with my photos and video on these drives as the drives are able to stay connected to this computer—I put a Thunderbolt adapter onto the Firewire 800 cable to connect to it. Luckily I had not yet updated it to the new operating system and I am afraid to do that. I've had the persistent message that Updates are available for my computer on my MacBook but I will not perform any updates for fear that I will lose access to my media drives. I am a professional photographer, so it's pretty disasterous if I can't access my drives. Please advise me what to do to keep my hard discs connected to my iMac and what to do to keep this from happening with my MacBook.

How to move files from old hard drive with SATA dock?
I just upgraded my hard drive and now need to transfer the data from the old hard drive to the new. I was told to use a SATA dock but I am not quite sure how to use one. I thought it best to either find out how to use one or find out if there is a better way rather than going about it on my own. How do I solve this quandry?

Now, from your old hard drive, go to your old itunes folder, and drag each artists folder into itunes. You can do it all at once if you have a few artists, but there have been reports of itunes locking up if too much is being is being imported at once -
WD external hard drive not recognized after improper eject
I have a WD Passport external hard drive that I've been using for a while with my MacBook Pro. The cord got yanked, causing the drive to improperly eject. Now my computer isn't recognizing the HD. Help! Of course EVERYTHING important is on this drive!
I tried plugging it into a Mac desktop, which also did not recognize the drive.
I plugged a different Passport into my MacBook Pro, and it was recognized, so I know it's not the USB Port that's causing the problem.
I used the cord from the HD that mounted with the problem HD. Didn't mount with the new cord. So I know it's the passport that's causing the problem, not the MacBook, not the USB port, not the cord.
I ran the disk utility, and the HD does not appear...It is powering up though- the light on the HD is lighting up. Oh please help!
Did I kill my disk? Of course I just moved my entire iPhoto library to this location, and I haven't backed it up yet....No. It may just require a 00 Phillips driver depending upon the enclosure. Do the swap on a towel so that the little screws don't bounce away from you. You will have to pull the HDD out from the connecting plug. Do it in a straight line,don't bend it, and you may have to slowly increase pressure to get it out of the connecting plug.
It's not rocket science.
