Hard Drives not sleeping SystemUIServer Hangs

I have been having problems with SystemUIServer “Hanging” when I used either my scanner or digital card reader which are both connected via FireWire. USB devices didn’t do this. You could see that it was Hanging in the Activity Monitor window. I was told that it was probably one of the apps that I run in the menu bar, and to uninstall them individually, and restart, to see which one was responsible. After doing this procedure SystemUIServer would still “Hang” so I was unable to resolve this problem.
Unfortunately, after reinstalling all the apps that had been removed I noticed that the two additional hard drives that I have installed which normally spin down, or sleep when not in use, were no longer doing that when I ran my browser, Firefox, and/or another app called OSXplanet. The drives just continued to run even though they were not in use. I spent almost two months tinkering trying to determine why these additional internal hard drives were not going to sleep when I ran these programs. One drive was for OS 9.2 only so it had nothing to do with the normal operation of OS X.3. I finally stumbled upon a description of what happens when you startup in Safe Mode, or Safe Boot, which only loads the basic programs of OS X. I tried starting up in Safe Mode and both hard drives spun down when either Firefox and/or OSXplanet were running.
I then took select screen shots (Shift-Command-4) of the Activity Monitor window with the Process Name selected in the window after a normal startup, and after starting up in Safe Mode. To select the Process Name just click on it. You can’t Save the Activity Monitor as it just gives you a plist. I compared the screen shots and found five apps that were not running during Safe Mode. I Googled each one to see what I could learn, and found a couple that were installed by Norton Utilities. I used Find in Panther to locate the apps in their respective folders. After removing something called DTDaemon, and restarting, the hard drives would go to sleep so I trashed those two items that were related to Norton, and uninstalled everything else using Norton’s Uninstaller v1.0.2. You have to be careful when pulling items out like this because you can easily remove something that can break OS X, but that’s why you check to see what each item is before removing it using Google.
Yet, after doing that, when I would use Command-O to open a document in say Appleworks, or just start Adobe Photoshop 7.0, the two additional hd’s would spin up and not go back to sleep. I had to restart to get the drives to sleep again. When I used Command-O the window would open and the selection would start with the computer’s name which opened to all three hard drives and Network. To see if there was some extension that was still affecting this I again did a Safe Boot by holding the Shift key down immediately after the startup chime. After booting into Safe Mode the hard drives did not spin up and continued to sleep when I used Commnad-O, or started Adobe Photoshop, so I restarted in normal mode. After performing this procedure the drives no longer start spinning when I use Command-O to open a document, or when I started Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Any ideas on what happened the second time I used Safe Mode to startup in? Supposedly there are repairs made when you do a Safe Boot, and I would love to know what. Hopefully this will solve someone else’s problem too. Also, any ideas on how to resolve the SystemUIServer “Hanging” whenever I use a FireWire device? I’m getting tired of Force Quitting SystemUIServer everytime I use my scanner or transfer pictures.

You have certainly done a lot of good debugging and I am sure that these problems have been quite vexing. Regarding the Safe Boot, you have probably seen Apple's article on What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?. The repair function that a Safe Boot does is to run a unix program (fsck) which attempts to repair the filesystem's directory structure. The directory structure is the mechanism that tells the operating system where files begin and end on the harddrive. It is conceivable that the 2nd Safe Boot repaired a problem that had cropped up, although I am not totally convinced of that.
Regarding the systemuiserver hanging with firewire devices, I have seen a number of posts on such issues but there does not appear to be a lot of information about how fixes, if they exist.
One more troubleshooting step that I will suggest is that you look in your console.log file to see if there are messages issued at the time that the hangs occur. One way to do this is to start the Console app from the Utilities menu. Make sure that the console.log file opens - if not, select it with the logs icon at the upper left of the Console app's window. Then, do something to cause the Systemuiserver to hang. See if something is printed to the console.log file. If nothing shows up, select the system.log file and repeat the process. If you get any messages, please report them here and perhaps someone will be able to interpret them.

  • External Hard Drive not sleeping or waking

Hi I have a mac mini with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2. I recently purchased a iomega 2 TB external hard drive that came pre loaded with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) pre formatted on it. I use 800 FireWire for the connection. I had no problems with the drive mounting and transferring files until I put my computer to sleep. I took me some time to figure out that the sleep function was the cause of the problem I was having. The drive would still be listed in finder after my computer woke but when accessed finder would freeze up and I would get the spinning cursor. Also when I left it to sleep over night I would find the drive off and an error that it had been ejected wrong.
I watched the drive when I put my computer to sleep get the sleep command and flash for a second and start to sleep but then come on again as if there was an error in the sleep command from my mac. If I wake my computer again to see the action of the drive it then goes to sleep when my computer is waking. I am guessing the command is the same to the drive from my mac. Wake or sleep, it just depends on the drives current state as to whether it sleeps or wakes.
My fix so far is to not let my computer sleep at all. As well I have to choose in system preferences to not allow the drives to sleep. Did notice after some time the external hard drive will sleep anyway from idle time but now my mac is not sleeping obviously. Or I have to eject the disk manually and then turn off the external hard drive then put my computer to sleep.
Am I missing something here? It's either a hard drive error or a software bug in Lion.

  • If I set my iMac not to sleep, but set hard drives to sleep when possible will they sleep?

If I set my iMac to never sleep, but my Hard Drives to sleep when possible why don't they sleep?

They don't sleep because your Mac is using them (as your Mac is turned on). If they go to sleep, you may damage the external drives because your Mac doesn't unmount the drives first

  • What are the symptons of macbook pro hard drive not running fast enough

what are the symptons of the hard drive not running fast enough

Physically the drive will be as fast as any other of its class, and if not then it's experiencing a mechanical issue that should prompt a warning or two in the system, especially if you use a drive management tool like Disk Utility that checks the drive's built-in "S.M.A.R.T." diagnostics.
As for "logical speed," if there are bad blocks on the drive where sectors cannot be read or written to because of a breakdown of the storage medium, then this can result in a program or the entire system crashing or hanging (generally the latter is the case), where it usually pauses for a number of seconds at a time. This is usually accompanied by messages that state "I/O Error" or other similar warning in the OS X Console (in the Applications > Utilities folder).
Beyond this, drive formatting errors such as might happen after a crash or power outage can result in similar hang-like behavior, though this is usually not as distinct of a hanging behavior as is seen with bad blocks.
Finally, if the drive is simply full of files or highly fragmented (not as much of a problem in OS X, but it can happen), then this can reduce access time for reading and writing files, and prevent the system from optimizing the use of RAM, which can result in overall slowdowns. Heavy drive use can also cause similar bottlenecks, but this is ususally only an intermittent issue during a time when you are performing a heavy file transfer or copying process, or other task that occupies access to the drive's index and formatting (e.g., if you check it for errors with Disk Utility, then you may see the system pause or slow down during the check).

hard drive not recognized during windows server 2008 setup

    Hi,
Whether the hard disk is recognized in BIOS?
Connect it to another computer to see if it could be recognzied incase the cause is the disk itself. Also please check if it is really a RAID instead of a single hard disk - a single disk should be recognized directly while RAID cannot be recognized until
    a suitable driver is installed.

  • 2 external hard drives not recognize by system all of a sudden

I have 2 external hard drives, one was used as a backup with Time Machine, the other was all my music storage, including Logic Pro and Ableton files.
This afernoon I was working on my Macbook pro with no problems, system backed up a few times. I was working on a new project in Logic. I saved the file, disconnected hard drive, went to my 2nd computer, an Imac from late 2009, plug the hard drive in, system does not recognize it. I wait a few minutes then unplug the drive, upon doing that I get a message that I've never seen before:
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices has been disabled.
To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may have also been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again."
It's been a few hours, I've disconnected all the devices, I think I figured that one of the drives is faulty. My question is, why is the other hard drive not being recognized, it's not recognized on any of my 3 computers, 2 Macbook Pro's and one imac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is extremely frustrating.

  • Advanced Format Hard Drive not recognized by HP DV6000 Controller

    Hello,
I have an HP DV 6000 laptop (6276 I think, I'm at work can't check) that came preinstalled with a Western Digital 160gb 1.5gb/s 5400 RPM drive (Vista) that failed a couple of weeks ago.  So i bought a Western Digital 750 GB WD Black SATA III 7200 RPM 16 MB drive to replace it. I read about people having some problems with Advanced Drive Format hard drives not being recognized by their controller, but also read that depending on the controller and specific Dv6000 model laptop they had-one wouldn't run into problems.
Well sure enough, when attempting to install Windows 7 I received the error that the hard drive was not detected. After researching online I came across an article on WD's site that noted
"Our SATA II hard drives use autospeed negotiation. This enables our SATA II drives to automatically detect the motherboard data transfer rate, making it backward compatible with SATA I data transfer rates. However, some older SATA I controllers are unable to support autospeed negotiation and cannot recognize the drive. This “drive not detected” condition occurs when a chipset is incapable of correctly negotiating the data transfer speed with a SATA II hard drive."
my drive is a SATA ||| but I'm pretty sure it's the same problem.  The site goes on to say a fix would be to  "purchase and install a third party PCI or PCI-Express Second Generation Serial ATA controller card for your Serial ATA hard drive(s)."
    My question(s) are.
1)Is the problem that I am trying to install a Sata ||| hard drive on a laptop with a controller that will only recognize SATA | hard drive?
    2) Or is the problem that the hard drive is an Advanced Drive Formatted hard drive and I need to buy a hard drive with out that specification?
    3) Or Should I buy a SATA controller card as WD suggests on their website and if so will this definitely allow my laptop's controller to recognize the new hard drive and proceed with the installation?
4)Or Should I just return the hard drive and buy a SATA | non Advanced Drive Format hard drive? (question 2 basically)
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi @jasmine00
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
I certainly understand your issue with the drive upgrade. Unfortunately it is a bit of the nature of notebooks, the sacrifice of a large amount of upgradeability, in exchange for compactness and portability. Whenever a new technology comes out, older notebooks are never really going to be easy to upgrade, it at all. Normally the unit as a whole is tested with a set list of hardware, and only those items are supported.
That being said there is this document that could be helpful with your problem.

I am planning on using my time capsule as a network and essentially an external hard drive - not just back up, is this ok?

Most users should use the Time Capsule for backups. This assumes that "original" copies of your data are on the computer and backups of this data are stored on the Time Capsule.
If either the Time Capsule or the hard drive on your computer fails, there are at least copies of your important data on the other drive.
If you are asking if you can place "original" files on the Time Capsule, do you have a plan to backup those files?
If the Time Capsule drive has a problem....and your only copy of your important data is on the Time Capsule....you will lose everything.
If you are asking if this is OK, the answer for most folks would be "no".
Can you clarify if this is what you are asking?

  • My external hard drive not showing up

    Hello,
My external hard drive is not showing up on my desktop. I went to finder & preferences>general and made sure I checked "show these items" and checked hard drives. I even unchecked it because I have 2 other external hard drives. When I checked the hard drive box the other 2 hard drives appeared but the third hard drive did not. • LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not Being Seen By Time Machine

    Hello all,
I have a LaCie d2 500GB Quadra Hard Drive Not being seen by Time Machine hooked up to my iMac via firewire 800. My iMac is running latest updates etc. Have raised a support ticket and was given the following instructions by LaCie:
    Posted: 08 November 2007 @ 00:00
Thank you for contacting LaCie Technical Support. Make sure the drive is mounting and you can assess files on it on your 10.5 system. If you can then you will need to reformat the drive to make it compatible with time machine.
Warning! All data on the external drive will be destroyed in this process.
Step 1: Run Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Step 2: Click on the LaCie hard drive's 'physical' entry, usually the third entry in the list
Step 3: Click on the Partition tab
Step 4: Change 'Current Scheme' to '1 Partition'
Step 5: Change the name of the drive back to what you would like it to be
Step 6: The format needs to be Mac OS Extended, with or without journaling
Step 7: Click on the Options... button
Use "Apple Partition Map" partition scheme on a PowerPC-based Mac.
Use "GUID" partition scheme on an Intel-based Mac.
    Step 8: Click on OK
    Step 9: Click on Apply
Step 10: click on Erase at the bottom of the screen, then confirm the erase.
The drive should start to be reformatted which should take only a few seconds and show up on the desktop with a new icon. Once it has you can then use it with time machine.
I have done all of the above and it is still not being seen. Anyone had a similar issue or got the above to actually work?
    Thanks in advance!!!!

    Ryan,
Check drive volume name and also the Computer name. Apple released a tech note recommending that both be limited to only the characters A-Za-z0-9 (no dashes, hyphens, or other special characters.
If you can, send the Apple System Profiler report to me at the addres in my profile. Imay be able to see something there. I have helped another user with similar problems, but with a LaCie USB drive. He got things working by repeating the recommended steps, and double checking everything.
As others have rported, this should work, so there may be something else preventing proper operation.
If the drive is usable from Finder, but Time Machine cannot use it, there is something related in how Time Machine is viewing the drive.
    Mike

I have a a G-Drive mini for time machine backups on an brand new MacBook Pro 15" connected with Firewire 800. Time machine works well, but the hard drive never sleeps. I think it should, cause time machine only runs once an hours, whats ok. In the meantime it runs for nothing, using power and producing noise and hot air.
Thanks a lot for any helping comment!

    What can I do ?

    1. Is your external HD connected by firewire?
    2. mpeg2 is the final compressed delivery format of a DVD, not intended for editing, and iMovie cannot handle such files, so you need to convert them first:
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
