Hard, DVD drive or something?

I got my mac mini a week ago, I was wondering what's that noise at start up just before you see the apple loading screen, The (drives?) makes 3 small knocks. When I restarts or I shutdown right after it doesn't do it. It does it only when I open my mac mini after a day of inactivity. Is that normal? Can you rebuild desktop in mac OS 10.4.7? Does that going to fix it?

Outside of the startup "chime," the mini should be relatively quiet, although others, who have posted in these discussion, have related some "noise" issues. Knocking sounds, most likely, may be the hard drive's head moving. It may be possible that yours is just a tad noisy or may indicate a problem. I suggest that, if possible, to visit your local Apple Store (since you just got the it), and have them either take a look or replace it with a whole new mini.

Hi Jolly, I tried 3 different HDD's all of them were reformated and reimaged with the HP image from this laptop. When I try to populate the drive, it just closes the window. Same with the dvd drive. Other then no able to write to the dvd/cd drive, everything else is perfect. But that is not good enough...

  • My CD/DVD Drive Only Works When I Jam the CD/DVD in hard..?

My CD/DVD drive only works when I stuff the CD/DVD in the drive EXTRA hard. If I just try to put in with normal force (that at one time worked) it spins the disc around, makes a spinning noise, and then ejects it. I'm taking it to the Apple Store soon. What should I expect to be wrong and is it fixable? Please share details. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like the spring that loads the drive has gotten jammed by something. This can often happen if you use CDs with sticky labels, or do anything to label the discs directly. As a result of issues like these, I've not labeled any discs directly, and instead store the in jewelcases, and purchase them prepackaged in jewelcases to avoid such issues.

  • TS1989 My iMac G5 has flashing question mark folder, no hard drive, no DVD-drive, no target drive - help?

A friend has 'kindly' decided to upgrade my father in law's iMac G5 and apparently found that it ceased to work following an aborted process. I have no idea what he's done but there was a Leopard DVD in the optical drive. The iMac boots to the smiley face folder but scrolls through 2 black screens and one grey screen first. A question mark appears at first then it changes to the smiley face folder with the question mark appearing occasionally.
I cannot get the iMac to see either a hard drive or the DVD drive. No start up disc at all. I have tried starting up in target mode and the target mode sign doesn't appear on the screen nor does the hard drive show on the other mac.
Starting up holding down either 'C', 'X' or 'R' doesn't produce any results. Starting up with 'alt' pressed down produces a screen with a padlock image followed by a white slot to write a password in and a greyish button with an arrow. None of the passwords associated with the machine have got us past this screen.
I can also get a command line on screen by holding down the startup button, hearing a loud beeeeep (firmware update signal?) keep holding down and a white screen with very small text invites me either to write 'mac-boot' or 'shut-down'. Both commands require a password to be effective and so do not work.
Following startup troubleshooting advice has allowed me to identify that there is both a start up button inside and an SMU  reset button. Three of the four led's come on fine and there are no problems with the starter button on the back panel.
I'm loath to change the hard drive at this point as I'm not sure if the HD is duff or something is wrong with the hardware and that another HD would be damaged.
    Stumped.

    I'll copy what BD wrote:

It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMD+Option+p+r, CMD +v, Option boot will show a lock, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
    Force Removing Password Protection
    1) Add or remove DIMMs to change the total amount of RAM in the computer.
    2) Then, the PRAM must be reset 3 times. (Command + Option + P + R).

  • How to reinstall Mac OS X with dead hard drive and no DVD drive?

    Hey,
I need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 on my Mac Mini as my hard drive doesn't appear to be booting. However, I cannot reinstall it through the OS install DVD as the DVD drive is not working either. I don't have any other Macs on hand to help create a boot disk or something so does anyone else have any solutions?
    Thanks,

Your going to need a external blank (preferably Firewire 800) drive if your not capable of replacing your Mini's internal drive.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
Your going to need a external DVD drive, or use a friends Mac with one and follow these instructions to place 10.6 on a bootable USB thumb drive to install on the external or new internal drive.
    http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html
To boot from the external drive, hold the option key down on a wired keyboard and select it to boot from, set it as the Startup disk in System Preferences.

  • IBook hard drive / cd\dvd drive errors

So my friend's old iBook finally went down, he nearly lost all of his data on it due to hard drive failure.
So I went about and replaced the hard drive with another one from my spare laptop. I got it booting up and installed Tiger, but I realized a strange error, the iBook kept going to sleep when the screen was slightly moved. So I went about and fixed that.
Somewhere along the lines however, the hard drive and dvd drives stopped registering in the boot process. At first I thought I had fried the motherboard or something, but I popped the hard drive into a firewire external reader and booted the iBook from it just fine.
When I power it on, I can hear it read the OS X install disk and spin the hard drive a little bit, but after that it will stop reading them completely and boot from the external drive. I have the cable settings correct, and aside from that I tested all of the possible configurations I could do.
At this point, I figured the cable that the HD/DVD drives are connected to was severed partly, and I ordered another one off ebay. I went to test it and the iBook is still doing the same thing.
It is a 600 mhz laptop with 256 mb ram. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't be certain, but it's entirely possible that the motherboard is damaged. Booting from a Firewire case wouldn't require the ATA interface to be functioning, so if that chip was damaged, perhaps due to static shock, that would explain both the hard drive and optical drive failing.
Presuming you have indeed confirmed the correct master/slave settings on the drive, try resetting the iBook's PMU:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
If that doesn't help, you may indeed have a component failure on the main logic board.
    Good luck.

  • Hard drive and dvd drive - simultaneous failure

    Hi
I'm running a 2yr 8 month old PowerPC. G4 1.67ghz with 2gb RAM. Until today, it's been pretty much faultless. I have had issues in the past related to installing updates from Mac. ie. on two separate occasions I took updates only to find that the machine wouldn't re-boot. Issues were resolved using install disks, disk warrior and/or repeated booting.
    Anyway - today:
I installed the update (Security Update 2008-003 (power PC)). Restarted and all was fine. Sometime later, after considerable use, the machine went to sleep. When I tried to wake it it wouldn't do anything. Eventually a blank grey screen came up with the file icon which alternately flashed a question mark and the finder icon.
I looked on these boards for suggestions. The best one seemed to be boot from the install disks. Unfortunately there is already an audio disk in the drive. I looked for suggestions to eject but none worked. Eventually, I plugged in my bootable clone of my harddrive. The machine took matters into its own hands and booted from it.
Once up and running I ran disk utility to check the status of the internal drive. It doesn't come up in the display. Nor does it show on the desktop or the in the finder. Which suggests to me that it's died.
I then looked to see if I could eject the cd from the DVD drive. i found no icon for the cd on the desktop or in the finder. I checked the "about this mac page" and it tells me "No burning device was found." This in turn suggests that the DVD burner has failed along with the hard drive.
My immediate thought would be that both parts have just reached the end of their time and given up the ghost. I'm a bit surprised/suspicious though that they seem to have done so in the same moment. And on the day that I downloaded a Security Update.
Has anyone had a similar problem, if so what did you do? Can anyone suggest anything I may not have thought of to find my missing HD and DVD burner? Would I be best off going to the Mac store in London? Ultimately, is replacing them myself a realistic proposition?
    Help appreciated.
    Ewan

    Thanks Arnie
Have been thinking along those lines. Especially as, when I boot the machine from the external drive, I can hear the DVD drive whirring. So it's clearly not completely dead.

  • G570: CD/DVD and Hard Disk drives not recognized

I have a Lenovo G570 laptop. It used to run fine until it started taking longer and longer boot into windows. Soon the computer would not boot into windows and instead try to repair windows, which would finish but never actually repair the computer. Soon after that the CD/DVD drive dissapeard from the BIOS, and it hasn't been able to do anything with a CD except for twirl it around (but not let it read any of that beautiful data.) Soon after this the hard disk was no longer recognized. I have been able ot get the computer to boot off of a linux live flash drive, but that's only a temporary fix. I wasn't able to reach any hard disks thorugh linux to back up files, and the CD drive wasn't recognized either. How can I fix this? Thank you for reading this.

    hi argiflex,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
AFAIK, if the HDD/ODD isn't recognized under BIOS then it's a sign that the device is already failing and needs to be replaced.  You can try using a 2.5" SATA Enclosure to read the drive via the USB port on the G570 or on another PC but if the problem remains then you may need to replace the drive.
If the data on the HDD is very important, you can opt to send the HDD to a professional data recovery firm (i.e. DriveSavers) to recover the data.

  • How can i restore from Recovery Disk if my notebook's hard drive and dvd drives are dead.

Hi. Good day. My hard drive just crashed and im trying to restore from my restore disks. Unfortunately, my dvd is dead too. I copied the recovery disks to a new hard drive and tried booting from a flash drive but the noteebook is still giving me the SMART hd error message. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi,
If you have, or can borrow an external CD/DVD drive it would be worth trying this although I'm not certain your notebook will support booting from a drive connected via USB.
Another option may be to see if you can find a second hand optical drive on somewhere like Ebay - the drives compatible with your notebook can be found on Page 59 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.  It may even be worth removing a re-seating your existing drive just in case this helps as described in this section.
Does the drive show up in Device Manager?  If it does, right click it and select Properties.  Select the driver tab and see if there is an error code in the status box.

  • I need to reinstall Snow Leopard on a MacBook 1.1 after replacing the hard drive.  The DVD drive is not working.  What is the best way to do this?

My hard drive died.  I installed a new one and want to restore from my Time Machine back up, but my DVD drive will not read my Snow Leopard upgrade disc.  It did read the grey Tiger install discs that came with the coumputer, so I now am back to 10.4.11, but how do I restore from my Time Machine backup from this point?  The system does recognize the Time Machine Drive, but "restore from backup" simply copies the entire contents to new hard drive.   have access to an external USB DVD drive, but I cannot boot my Snow Leopard upgrade DVD from it.

This article contains instructions for reinstalling OSX on older Macbook Airs.  It should also apply to your situation.  Give it a try.

  • Swapped hard drive - dvd drive doesn't work now!

    hi
Long story but... my logic board in my 1ghz G4 combo drive ibook died so i bought another used ibook (1.33ghz superdrive). The new one had a 60G HD but my old one had a 120G HD so i swapped the bigger one into the newer one. The old 120G HD had 10.3.9 on it while the 60G HD in the newer ibook had 10.5. As expected, the newer ibook started up with the older HD with OS 10.3 with all my stuff on it and everything appeared to be successful until I tried to put in my OS 10.4 DVD to update to a newer OS. It didn't read the DVD so I tried other cd's and DVD's - nothing works? I've been assured that the superdrive in the newer one does (well did!) work. I tried patchburn and that just tells me the dvd drive is supported by osx already.
Is there some way of testing if it's the dvd drive or some sort of driver or firmware that needs updating?
I can't face stripping it down again and swapping the superdrive out for the old combo drive - especially if that is not guaranteed to fix it!
    Any ideas?
    thanks

One observation on the hard drive cable plugging into the logic board. On my iBookG4, the connector is covered with a piece of yellow tape which seems to be pretty sticky along the edges. When I took my iBook apart to get out the logic board, I noticed that the hard drive connector had become quite firmly attached to the metal shield just from the edges of the tape, and the connector pulled out of the socket when removing the shield. I have heard of the hard drive just becoming disconnected, and I think it's because the tape can stick to the shield and result in the hard drive connector pulling loose from the socket in the logic board. You might check to see if this has happened. A small piece of paper placed on the back of the yellow tape that would keep it from sticking to the shield should prevent this problem. I plan to do that when I put mine back together.
    Good luck!
