Hard reset damage on freezing issue

What is the likelyhood of damaging my iMac after about 40 plus hard resets and counting since update 1.1 has come out, freezing my computer.

I believe hard resets (with the power button) are safe. As I understand it, the button generates a "non-maskable interrupt" -- causing the system to shutdown under processor control. That's very different from removing power by "pulling the plug."
Even "pulling the plug" is very unlikely to cause permanent hardware damage, but it can lead to data corruption on the hard drive -- such that the OS will no longer boot. In that case, the only repair is an OS re-insall.

    OK ... so I just restarted and opened Safari first ... no spinning ball. And I opened mail after hitting the rebuild, well, I'm missing messages from Dec. 24 - now, but it opened right away. Most messages are FB feeds, so it's not like I've lost anything important. So, initial thoughts ... scorp111177, the hard reset usually fixes minor issues with the phone so I'm truly surprised your phone will not reboot up. This is something that doesn't occur often with this device. The information rcschnoor provided is correct. By calling us from a different phone or visiting a corporate store, we can trouble shoot  your issue in more detail. If we can not resolve the issue and the phone is under its one year manufacturer's warranty with no physical or water damage, we can replace the device with a certified like new device of the same model.
    Additionally, I recommend performing a battery pull for 1-2 minutes to soft reset the device. If your phone powers up but has a difficult time getting past the start up screen or gives you an error message, please report that to the forum so that the community and our vzw representatives can provide you additional information.

  • Apps frozen in transition after apple genius bar did a hard reset, cant get thru app store either

    Went to apple genius bar after 6 hours of trying to fix iphone 4s: couldn't send/rec photo txt msgs, get voicemail alerts, update software upgrades or back up files in icloud. They did a hard reset and fixed those issues, however the majority of my apps are frozen in either blank grey boxes or dim grey boxes with app icon showing, they saved my contacts to icloud and pics to dropbox (which is now a frozen app that I can't access). Does anyone know what my next step is? I have only had the phone 6 months and don't wanna re buy but I use for work too so need to know whats going on? Also tried to install totally different app from app store and couldn't.

    Hi there 80sbaby1!
    I have an article here that can help you with the grey apps that you are seeing. It appears that those apps may not have fully re-downloaded onto your iPhone, and this article will provide some insight into resuming those downloads:

    I also have a website for you that can help you with some steps for troubleshooting that may resolve this issue. The website is an iPhone troubleshooting assistant, and can be found right here:

    I have been having problems with my atv 3 not transmitting/receiving 5.1 surround. Whether I stream from my computer or watch movies, I am getting no 5.1 audio. The atv won't even show the option for surround. I tried to restore and reset the device but it didn't help.
    I haven't had any problems with missing apps or freezing or anything similar to what you are experiencing. This update has many bugs. Other threads have reported even more problems. Hopefully I can go back to the previous update.

  • 10.7.2 Lion freezing / apps lock up, must hard reset 2-3 times daily

    I've seen several posts on this -- oddly, some of them are archived even though there has been no resolution...
    Would love to hear people's experiences and especially if you have a fix. Would REALLY love it if Apple would get off their duff and give us a working O/S.
    Ever since upgrading to Leopard I've been having problems with system stability and, specifically, with lockups. Usually this starts out with a few applications get "hung" (beach ball). Again, usually, I can force quit them, restart and continue for at least a little while... but, it always marks the beginning of a downward spiral. The final straw seems to be when Finder locks up. Once Finder locks, the system becomes unresponsive overall and I can't shut down without doing a hard reset (either cmd-opt-power or, more often, just hold power until a get a hard reboot).
    Some of the behaviors I'm seeing:
    Apps start to lockup. Best option at this point is to quickly shut everything down and restart. On occasion I get a software restart if I'm prompt about it.
    Finder locks up... forget it. Hardware restart is in my future... will generally try to save work, but it seems that anything involving disk / file system access is completely frozen.
    About one out of two times, the login screen is very slow to appear (about a 2 minute boot), and then it fails to respond to my wireless keyboard &/or mouse. Sometimes the mouse works, keyboard doesn't. If I wait for 1-2 minutes, it will usually "wake up" and suddenly gets all of the input in one blast... but usually I lose patience, open up the laptop, do another hard reset.
    Sometimes the screen saver won't release control of the machine (much like login screen). I can move the mouse, tap keys, etc., screen saver just keeps right on running blithely along...
    On rare occasion, even the force quit panel (cmd-opt-escape) refuses to appear.
    Of late, I've taken to launching Terminal on login so that it's available (because after the lockups start, I won't be able to launch it). Then, I can issue a "shutdown -r now" which, most of the time, seems to work pretty well. I hate doing a hard reset, always worried it will lead to a damaged file structure or lost work.
    I've tried a number of fixed, including (at the height of it) reinstalling 10.7.2, which I did a few days ago. It made no difference at all... Also tried resetting NVRAM, etc. About the only folklore I haven't tried yet is switching to Chrome or Firefox. A lot of people are blaming Safari for all of this, so perhaps I'll try that next...
    I'm suspecting that Time Machine is making the situation worse, but turning it off (and disconnecting the drive) does NOT solve the problem. It seems to go a little longer in-between system lockups. Same symptoms... apps become unresponsive, one after the other starts to beach ball, eventually the whole system locks up... I'm wondering if it has something to do with disk access, as posted in other threads. I've been trying to minimize disk access wherever possible, for one, just plugging in my Time Machine drive about once a day, let it backup, then unplug. Not really sure if it's helping or not though.
    Currently, I'm running into this on average 3 times daily (worst day was 6 times, best day was just once, yay...) Yes I've been keeping track. By my count I'm also losing up to two hours a day, because the shutdown / reboot process is so baby-sitting intensive (and I have to do it several times a day).
    Very, very frustrating. This is definitely the worst O/S release Apple has ever put out there. I'd like to go back to Leopard, but worried about the downgrade... arrrgggh. (Wish Mr. Jobs was still around, somehow I think he would never have tolerated this...)

    I launch iPhoto, use it a few times, and it hangs, requiring a restart of the iMac;
    iPhoto complains that I am not connected to the Internet (when trying to display GPS data) when I am fully connected
    Magic Mouse's connection drops about every 15 to 40 minutes of typing, often in this Discussion. Apple Care suggested that keeping my battery charge above 50% would solve it. It didn’t.(My batteries are Apple’s, as is the charger.);
    When I return my hand to the Magic Mouse, the active window often suddenly scrolls up which looses the position of the pointer. This can cause problems in graphical apps like InDesign;
    Mail's boxes display a small triangle every few days and will not send or receive, requiring Mail to be re-launched;
    In Mail I cannot get pictures of people to appear in messages sent by them.
    In Mail, stationery does not work properly. Neither of these two is an earth-shattering fault, but having been offered them I wasted a lot of time trying to get them to work.)
    Time Machine three times over the last 1 1/2 years (OS 10.5 once and Lion twice) has complained that its HD is full when it is only ~1/2 full. A full reset on the last two did not cure it (I had not discovered Pondini's Full Reset until Lion). Pondini's symptom's and solutions did not match the error. Each time I had to erase and start again;
    A couple of months ago, as a test, (after confirming my daily bootable backup of my system done by Carbon CopyCloner), I re-installed Lion from the InstallED.dmg, accepted the invitation to restore from TM, and upgraded to 7.2. All looked well except Mail displayed only the Header and first two lines of the body of messages, all the rest of the bodies were blank. Another major thing did not work after this re-installation (I can't remember the details now);
    Carbon Copy Cloner can fail to find its Firewire backup HD about every 10th time (I have a daily schedule). The connections to the drive are plugged in OK but the drive is no longer mounted, whether the iMac has been restarted or woken up. CCC has been absolutely rock solid for years until Lion;
    My Canon scanner (current driver, and it always worked before Lion), more times than not complains that it cannot start because it is in use elsewhere. I have to unplug its USB and re-connect.
    In SystemPrefs > iCloud, a dialogue box said that Sys. Prefs. wants to use confidential info in my keychain. I press “Deny” and the box returns for ever until I force quit Sys. Prefs.
    Software Update repeatedly tells me that a certain update is available but I already have installed it.
    For those silly enough to install a new OS within a year of its introduction (not me: my iMac came with the wretched thing in it), some bugs can be expected, but not this many (at least in my opinion). All previous updates going back to 1997 have gone much more smoothly than Lion on my machines.
    Although I am in a minority (given the huge number of sales of Lion – although MacWorld reports that sales of Lion are faltering), I am sorry to say that I have fallen out of love with Apple. I would gladly trade the elegance and the fancy features for a bit of “Works out of the box”, “It  just works”, “Computing for the rest of us”.

  • Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required

    Good morning,
    Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
    The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
    Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
    Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
    Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
    Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
    The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
    Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
    Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

  • Wi-fi freezes after Hard Reset

    I hard reset my Palm TX and then did a Hot Sync.  When I tried to connect to Wi-fi or switch radio on the screen goes white and freezes.  I did another Hard Reset without Hot Syncing afterwards and tried again with the same result.  Do I have a hardware problem or is this a known problem with the TX which I can resolve myself with the right information.  I don't want to have to spend a fortune sending it to Palm for repair if it is not necessary.
    Post relates to: Palm TX

    Hi KathrynB, Welcome to the Palm Support Community.
    Sadly, I've been hearing more of these reports of TX Wifi failures as the device ages...
    Perhaps about a dozen total, but there seems to be no solution to fixing the problem.
    Palm's repair prices are just silly.  If you wish to try getting it repaired, try looking into usedpdaparts.com or directfix.com.

  • Damage to SSD when hard reset to Macbook

    Hi all,
    Thanks for reading my post. Please let me ask a question.
    Sometime my macbook air will freeze and couldn't do anything with keyboard or mousepad, even close the cover it still there and won't go sleep mode.
    At that time i have no choice and just do a hard reset by long pressing the power button and turn it back on.
    The freeze is rarely happend and i found out what is the reason so that part is not a problem.
    I just wondering when we perform a hard reset to the macbook , will it damage the SSD ?
    I read some information and article says that SSD is weak on "suddent power loss" especially when the SSD is trying to write something on its flash.
    So just wondering will this happend also with hard reset or Macbook air have some logic to prevent that happend? ( like automatically stop the process on SSD when hard reset ,etc)
    I have tried to google the answer at internet but couldn't find any answer or article mention about this.
    If any one know about this please teach me the answer.
    Really thanks for your time and please have a nice day.
    Using model : Macbook air mid 2012 128GB (Toshiba SSD)

    I doubt a hard reset will damage any hardware.  If the drive is writing, there is a possibility that files may become corrupt but at worse you may lose what you are working on or have to repair files.
    Typically you don't do a hard reset just to switch off or for the fun of it, a hard reset is something one resorts to when you get a system freeze.  If your computer is frozen, it won't be doing much when you do the reset so  thre chances of damage, even to files is minimal.

  • Camera is freezing up on a brand new ipad mini.  Any fixes to try?  I have tried hard resetting it.

    The camera on one of our devices is not working.  It opens but then is frozen.  I have tried hard resetting the device but has not helped.  This is a brand new mini that we just received.

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

  • After iOS 7 download have to do "hard resets" several times a day...phone freezes and shuts off

    After ios7 I have to do "hard resets" several times a day. Phone freezes and shuts off.

    Hello Hockey2013,
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Usually for an iPhone that is doing this I would recommend resetting the device, but you do that already. Next I would have to recommend backing up to iTunes, then restoring the device.
    iOS: How to back up and restore your content
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
    After you restore the device I would set it up as new and use it for a bit to see if the issue persists. If it does not, restore from your backup and then test it for a bit again to verify that it works.

  • Droid X - multiple random resets, freezing issues

    Hi all,
    Received my Droid X yesterday and have had nothing but issues with it.  If I make it 15 minutes without it resetting or freezing I am lucky.  There were a few periods when I saw almost an hour between resets.  This is a brand new unit, activated (prior phone is a Touch Pro 2) with no apps installed (other than what is programmed on the new phone).  I did a hard reset and also updated to 2.2 with the same issues.  It happens no matter where or what I am doing, including not doing anything at all.  I was able to grab a few apps to install but obviously there are issues so I have been in contact with VZ.
    The Verizon rep was simply awesome!!!  Yes, I said awesome.  I would like to thank Jennifer (and the other reps) as she/they  have been amazing during this whole issue.  She did what she said, when she said and made sure others did as well.  I was contacted by VZ several times during the day and everybody did their best to try and get my phone up and running or find out why it was acting the way it was. The final verdict is that the phone is being exchanged as the issue has not been fixed.
    We all want to receive our phones and just use them.  We do not want issues, hassles or problems.  The small minority of us that are having issues can and should be upset when the phone is not working as expected or promised.  I have every reason to be upset and PO'd but Verizon has done everything correctly so far.  I am going to give them the opportunity to fix this and I will report back when I receive and activate my replacement.

    Had a few similar short system freezes, after installing Windows 8 x64 on 13” MacBook Pro Mid-2010 with BootCamp 5.0.5033.
    There is a suggestion that DisableDynamicTick may fix the problem: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21565295#21565295. There were similar topics at Microsoft forums: 1, 2, 3. It was said “that this will likely reduce system battery life, so it should be undone when you update your Windows build or if it doesn't resolve your issue”, and that “this problem is resolved in the release versions of Windows 8”.
    Another possibility is that there is indeed a buggy driver, within BootCamp 5.0.5033, or a 3rd party, like a wireless network driver in the following case http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/system-fr eeze-randomly-after-installing-windows-8/49488183-26cf-4389-af21-a85dc366c99a?pa ge=2#LastReply.
    The problem has been noticeable on my MacBook, but not annoying enough yet to spend time troubleshooting. If you find a robust solution, using the links above or other method, it would be interesting to know.

    I just got my replacement phone from Warranty. The phone was on for just 2 hours and it crashed. I was told that motorola knows about this "possible" issue. I got a new sim, hard reset, If it can be done I did it. They are now sending me the same phone again. Number 3. I would hope this one doesn't crash but I rather have a different phone so I can enjoy using my account. The phone's most recent error was today. " Unfortunately, the process com.motorola.widget.circlewidget3d" has stopped. At least the error message works and it's polite. I told tech this and they could not answer my question or help me other then "let's do a hard reset" My warranty replacement is coming on Monday. Let's hope this one works. Anyone else havinbg the same problem. it says "such and such as stop working" on all sorts of stuff! Help! I want my iPhone Back!

    I just did a google search on this issue. OMG, I got a ton of videos on this or similar issues. Each one says in some way to clear the cache, reset the data, etc. Why in the world would this continue to happen and they not do a fix that resloves this without having to lose or stop what your doing. This is a very long and constant issue it seems with Android phones as there must have been pages and pages of what I now call "Unfortunately"  So I am going to pray that Verizon helps me  out and gets me away from this issue and helps me go back to iPhone or try the Samsung.

    Individuals with a long list of issues on a particular machine may find benefit from either contacting technical support and working through their list, or publishing it as you have done and wait for other users of the same system to share their experiences.
