Hard return paragraph breaks at top of text frames

I'm learning how to do book layouts in InDesign CS4 and I have a problem I can't figure out how to solve. I'm autoflowing huge chunks of pasted text into linked text frames and when a paragraph breaks (with a double hard return) at the same place as a new page/column, there is a blank line on the top of the text frame like so:
Is there a way to automatically make that paragraph break line go away when it comes at the top of a new text frame? My document is 400+ pages with many, many paragraphs. I don't want to get rid of the hard return spaces between all of them, just the ones that come at the top of text frames.

To expand slightly, space before and after are ignored at the top of a column or frame, but the empty paragraph is not.
You might want to try out the "Find/Change by List" sample script which fixes multiple returns along with leading and trailing whitespace and double space after a period (among other common problems). It's really just a chained set of Find/Change operations that can speed up the cleanup of new text.

  • How to get rid of paragraph breaks in a lengthy text instead of manually

I have imported a large piece of text - it is very narrow and has many paragraph breaks I guess you call it - or return breaks. I started doing it manually but it is a nightmare. Is there an easier way to do it? I snooped around and tried a few things but cannot seem to get this to work. I have a lot more work to do. Thanks again.

Position the mouse pointer after the last printed character of a paragraph. Press the mouse button and hold it while you drag down over several of the empty lines. Release the mouse button. Simultaneously press command+C keys (then release) to copy the selection to the clipboard. Simultaneously press command+F keys (then release) to open the Find&Replace dialog. Click once in the "Find:" window, then press command+V keys (then release) to paste the contents of the clipboard there. Click in the "Replace:" window then press "Return" to enter a single carriage return. Click on the "Replace & Find' button.

  • Horizontal paragraph rule across two-column text frame?

    Hi,
as the title suggests, how do i get a horizontal rule to run across a two-column text frame?
    I have either had the rule just apply to the entered text; had a gap where the column gutter is;
or I have had to set the column gutter to 0mm/px and manually set carriage returns to give the impression of a gutter.
Surely there is a better way?
I'll attach a jpeg of my various options.
Hope I've been clear-enough. All help is appreciated.
    Cheers, Matt

You can put the rule in a paragraph which is spanning a columns.
Or you can extend the paragraph rules by inputing minus values to left and right (e.g. -5mm)
Or you can use a table instead.
Or you can use negative left and right intend for the text but extend the rule to the end of the frame.
Never set a carriage return manually.

  • Text will NOT align to top of text frame

The text is low in the text frame even though the vertical justification is set to align TOP in the text frame options and the first baseline offset is set to Ascent in baseline options. There is no baseline shift or inset set and align to baseline grid is NOT selected. Any ideas how to fix it so the text is at the top of the box? Thanks!

    @gtingley – did you try:
    1. Copy/Paste the text frame to a fresh document?
    2. Export as IDMS (snippet) file and place it again?
Just out of fun, did you try to copy/paste the text to a new text frame? Is a object format applied to the text frame? (Just fishing in the dark.)

  • Can't anchor object at top of text frame

I'm trying to place an achored object inline at the top of a text frame (CS 5). If I make the insertion point before the first word of text the object always gets placed below the first line of text. I can change the Y relative to "Line (top of leading)" for the anchored position in the options but then the first line of text gets covered up (the object has text wrap applied). I can put an extra space at the top of the page and anchor the object there, but then the text doesn't begin at the top of the text frame.

Here's a shot of the page and the anchored object settings. The arrow points to the insertion point in the text frame.

  • Pressing enter (hard return) moves next line to next pg/frame/col

    Hi,
I read this was a glitch in German and Swedish CS5 Mac version.
Options seem to be set correctly.
    Thanks

Do you have the German or Swedish version? Have you updated to 7.0.3?
This is actually also a fairly common problem on some Windows laptops where the BIOS maps the two enter keys together. Toggling NumLock switches the behavior between a column break and a paragraph break. I'm not sure if affects Macs without numberpads, but I think not.

  • Newsletter layout, aligning columns, paragraph breaks and lines of text

    HI,
I have never designed a newsletter before.
It is annoying me because I am trying to be as meticulous as possible with my alignment, but I notice there are things all over the place that don't line up.
I have a paragraph style, with space before and after. I have three columns. When I look at one line of text across all three columns, they do not line up. The WOULD line up if I had all straight text and no image wraps, but the image wraps, and the start of a new paragraph in column two, throws off alignment in column three.
What is the best way to make stuff line up with the least amount of effort possible?
Are there tutorials on good newsletter layout design? Grid layout?
    Thanks,
    Stan

I just stated working with InDesign in my GA 101 class. It really was great fun but takes alot of practice. Still learning something new everyday. I  will be working with grids the next class and will be checking in the forum for help.

  • Boxes at the top of text frame.

Sorry if this is stupid question.
Getting indicators on a text box I have not seen before. Plus sign in box at top. And when I go to print, I'm warned of over set text.

    Ah, yes!
If you want to make the text of the text path object visible, you first have to select at least the first insertion point of that object with your text cursor and then hit cmd+y.
But if you're just at it you even can select all the text in the text path object and delete that without going to story editor. (But you will never know what caused the text path object to overset ;-) )

  • Can an InCopy editor add, remove and edit a text frame placed inside the main story text frame?

I think I already know the answer to this which is - no. I'll explain why I am asking the question in a second, but the reason I think the simple answer is no is because - text frames are controlled by a designer in the layout file, an editor using incopy can only edit the text and images placed inside text frames, and so cannot resize them, add or delete them.
Ok, so the reason I have asked this.
Is there a way around this so that editors in incopy can edit certain types of text frame that are contained within the main text frame? I'm using these text frames to contain specific paragraph styles, giving them a boxed look and also with an anchored icon in the top left of the text frame depending on the type of paragraph it is. See screenshot as an example of a green text frame that I am using to contain paragraphs of type "tip".
If it is not possible for editors in incopy to add, edit or resize these text frames (green tip frame in the example above), then how else can I style these paragraphs to give the same visual appearance, but without the use of wrapping them in a text frame?
One (not so good) way around this is for the designer to add the text frames in the layout file after he gets the content back from the editor, then moving the "tip" paragraphs into these newly created text frames. However when the editor updates the content in incopy and gets these new text frames in their copy, they can not then delete them if they wish to, or if they add or reduce content inside of these green text frames then the frames dont grow to fit their edited content. So I dont think its a solution for the designer to control the adding, removing and resizing of these frames.
UPDATE: I have just discovered that once a text frame has been placed into the document by the designer and the editor updates their copy in incopy-  they can then use the "Position Tool" to select that text frame - allowing them to resize it, or delete it! Fantastic. But would the editor be able to add these frames in themselves to begin with? Maybe have a document containing all of the objects available to them, copy and paste one of them into the main document and edit its content? Does anyone have any advice on how to go about this? Essentially I would like the editor to control the insertion, editing and removal of these inline text frames.

True. But when all I am trying to achieve is a border around a paragraph, use of a table seems overkill to me. But if thats the only solution I have so far then I will have to go down that route.
It would be useful to have an object libraries panel in InCopy so that editors can drag across predefined text frames into their doc via InCopy, but I cant see that option in InCopy. is there one? I have also thought about exporting the frames as seperate InDesign Snippets and saving them to an objects folder, then when an editor needs to insert one into their doc they simply use File > Place > "Choose required text frame snippet". However I have found that InCopy can't place InDesign snippets so that theory was a failure. Is there another format I could use to save the objects and bring them into InCopy? List below shows my findings so far for trying to save/export a text frame from InDesign and then import into InCopy:
InDesign Snippet (.idms) - can't import into InCopy
InDesign Document (.indd) - imports content as an image - only editable in InDesign
InDesign Template (.indt) - imports content as an image - only editable in InDesign
InDesign Library (.indl) - can't import into InCopy - no panel available in InCopy for object libraries (that I can see...)
InCopy Markup (.icml) - only imports the text, loses the text frame

How do I change the spacing before or after a hard return in Pages 5.5.2?    I am working on an academic article and need to specify paragraph formatting (OS X Yosemite 10.10.2)

    Hi Michele,
Select the paragraphs where you want to change the spacing.
Format Panel > Text > Spacing
You can change 1.0 - Single to something else, or type a number in Before or After.

  • Is there a way to remove extra hard returns without wrecking text?

    Hey gang,
I have 300 pages of flowing text that arrived via Import XML. Here and there are groups of 2 or 3 empty hard returns littering the flow. I want to Find/Change to get rid of them.
If I GREP search for \r (even adding negative lookaheads and negative lookarounds for the purpose of isolating empty returns) and replace them with nothing, this gives rise to a problem of the NEXT paragraph gets its paragraph style changed.
How can I avoid changing the paragraph style of the text that follows the empty returns?

  • Soft or Hard Returns for Spacing

When I hit a hard return in a paragraph where I would like a
line break, it drops the next line down further than I would like
it, so I usually a soft return, and it gives it a <br /> tag
instead of a <br> tag. Is this a bad practice to keep hitting
soft returns and filling the html with <br /> tags. Is there
a better way to have a line break?
Also, I have a habit of just hitting return to get further
    down, for example:
A line of spaced out copy
A line of spaced out copy
    etc.
Is this a bad technique to be hitting return so much?

    >> Is this a bad practice to keep hitting soft returns

Yes. It creates sloppy, hard to maintain code and if the
    visitor increases
their font size the page will look really wonky.
    > Is there a better way to have a line break?
Yes. Learn to use CSS to set the top/bottom margins (or
    padding in some
    circumstances) of your paragraphs. (<p>text

  • How to insert a character and paragraph break at the beginning of a paragraph using Grep

    Dear Community!
    I am stucked...
I have several books in indesign, which I want to export into epub. I have a standardized procedure, to be able to assign the task to students.
My problem i I have a paragraph style 'heading2' and I would like to insert a paragraph break before which is styled 'new page'.
Here is the theory I have thought about:
-with find and change find the style 'heading2'
-insert a special character + paragraph break before the first character of the paragraph
-with a second find and change find the special character
-replace with nothing and style with 'new page'
My question is how to insert with grep (?) before the first character anything.
    Please help me!
    Thanks in advance

Look in the flyout panel of your Paragraph panel.

  • Find/Change Inserting paragraph break

    Hello
I am trying to insert a paragraph mark between two lines of text using find/change
The first line has a heading style and I want to insert an empty line (Paragraph) after it and before the next line (without changing any formatting)
I am able to use enter the correct parameters in find but can't figure out what parameter to use in 'Change to"
Forced line break doesn't produce what I want. Neither does standard carriage return (not sure what that is)
I have tried both Text and Grep dialogs without success. Yes I read the help files.
This will be simple for you guys but is stumping me.
    Any ideas oh brilliant ones?
As usual Thanks much in advance

Err, a paragraph mark? You mean a paragraph break?
Anyhow, if you insist on Doing it Wrong, you can use ^p ("End of Paragraph") in the change field. So you might
change ^p to ^p^p to insert a blank paragraph between each paragraph. For instance. But again, it is the wrong answer.
Yes-a paragraph break.' Sorry for the imperfect terminology
The first line is a heading style which I was advised in this forum to make into a 'list style' due to TOC issues
The 'doing it wrong' paragraph is going to be used to anchor a graphic and then converted to a very small paragraph mark (nearly invisible) as advised in another article
    I did use the
    change ^p to ^p^p
but it creating another list style as the paragraph break. Its ok. I went ahead and did it anyway and then manually changed all of those entries into a regular paragraph 'break'
With 300 graphics I would like to automate this but.....
    Thanks for your reply

  • Setting paragraph break spacing

    Hi,
I'm exporting a file I created in InDesign CS4 to Kindle and finding that the last line of every paragraph has more spacing above it than the rest of the paragraph. I've found that adding a line break (Shift+return) will solve the problem but this means that I can't add paragraph styles to the text. Is there a place where I can specify the leading for paragraph breaks?
    Thanks in advance!

    joymiki wrote:

Do you mean that, or is there more space below the last line of the paragraph? If you mean below, I'd say to check the space-after paragraph attribute. If you really do have space above the last line of a paragraph, you probably have some keystrokes within that last line set with a different leading as a local override. A pure paragraph style wouldn't do that, because there is only one leading amount for a paragraph without using local overrides. The first place I'd check is the paragraph return. If you select just the return (double-click after the final punctuation mark, or place the cursor at the beginning of the next paragraph and hit the left arrow while holding the shift key), you can see if the return character has a different leading than the rest of the paragraph.
Another possibility is baseline shift, that that's far less likely.
