Hard To Believe There Was Once a Raw vs. JPEG Debate

There was a time when folks debated whether to shoot raw vs. setting their cameras to do the conversions internally and just deliver JPEGs. This was not that many years ago!
Now it's just so easy to bring up shadow detail, tame nearly blown highlights, remove color fringing, get better color, and keep the results looking pleasing and natural...
What strikes me is how far Camera Raw (also Lightroom) has come in such a short time, so that what was a reasonable debate at one time is now a no-brainer: Anyone with a current version of Photoshop and a camera made in the last decade would be silly not to shoot raw.
Time was the JPEG images often looked more natural than "pushed" images where we tried to get more out of the shadows. Before the most recent advances, highlight recovery was pretty iffy.
Now it's almost always just the opposite - adeptly processed raw images using the modern facilities for shadow and highlight recovery often bring back data we didn't know we had, and at the same time actually end up looking more natural than their in-camera JPEG counterparts, even when extreme adjustments are used!

I suppose we can expect that people are at all levels of knowledge. Life is a learning experience for us all.
The leaps just made in the past few months eclipse all past capabilities and now make it easier than ever for virtually all folks to get more from their raw files (e.g., just drag the Shadows and Highlights sliders to extreme settings). Given what can be done with one exposure, it's not hard to imagine that there might be some who no longer crave taking it even further with multiple exposure HDR.
I honestly haven't needed another camera in years because of all these converter improvements.

I just built a new workstation for processing photos using PS CS5. I use external drives to store my images as I find it easier for backing up as well as for when I want use my laptop for sorting, etc.. I copied over all my old "Collection" files, and of course, had to "fix" them once on the new machine. Once pointed in the right direction, the collections all fill out correctly.
When I go to process a collection though, I encounter an odd problem I can't seem to sort out. I can delete files, rename files, copy/paste to the external drives, etc.. What I can't seem to do is add Labels, Ratings, or modify RAW settings. I mean, I can use ACR to make adjustments, I just can't seem to save them.
The system just ignores label, rating commands completely. When I try to save an ACR adjustment I get this error. "Unable to save the raw conversion settings. There was a write permission error."
The files are NOT write protected. I'm set up as the owner of my workstation, with complete control of the system. I can't seem to find any useful information about this error because the "write permission error" seems to only be happening on installs, so that's all I can find help for.
My system:
Intel Core i7 970@ 3.20GHZ
24.0 GB RAM
64-bit OS - Windows 7 Pro
DX58S02 Motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580

To answer your first question; I use sidecar XMP files. If everything from my archive was shot in RAW I'd try converting to DNG and see if embedding the changes directly in a file worked. Unfortunately, a lot of my old stuff was shot in JPG, so sidecars seems to be the best choice.
When I add labels, ratings, as well as change RAW settings on files I place on my workstations HD everything works. It's only when I try to do these things with the same files on removable drives that I run into trouble. The drives I use are Transcend 640GB StoreJet 25ms connected via USB.
I don't think it's a UAC problem. At least, to my understanding, doesn't that control how your machine alerts you to program changes? I'm stumped. I also hate the idea that I'll have to go through various folders to find images from already created collections, copy them to a new folder on my HD and then work on them. Then I'll have to put them all back... ugghhhh

If it's the same machine (same CPU) there should not be any need to activate. The actiovation is tied to your CPU.

I recently updated my macbook pro to Maverick, there was another system update so I updated and once I did I noticed that my safari wouldn't quit. I was unable to shutdown. I finally force quit safari and was able to shut down. Now it won't turn back on!

The tabsacross my browser didn't have little x's to close them I neede to right click to close the tab
My safari wouldn't quit. It was keeping me from shutting down my computer so I force quit then shutdown.
Now my computer is having trouble turning on. It stays at the white screen with the gray apple in the middle and the small circular loading bar. and flickers between that and black.
What is wrong? is there anything I can do to get it up and running?? PLEASE PLEASE help!

Same outcome even though I let it "Back Up" for 7-8 hrs while I slept. Same Story............... iTunes 10.4.0.80 is the software I'm using. When my phone is 'plugged' in what I see on it's face is "Sync in Progress".....for hours!

I was wondering if there was some software that allowed me to access my old computer somehow, does it save your files to the internet or to some external system manually ? obviously i know this is unlikely but i thought i would check as the computer had all my work on it.

I try to warn people, that TimeMachine drives tend to get stolen along with everything else.
To make and store bootable clones offsite or in a safe or something.

I attached the UltraMax Plus with a USB cable. The UltraMax powers the cable so power is not an issue. I can open other files. Also, there is 500GB of files on the drive so I cannot re-format it. Although, I noted I could import the entire Aperture Library. However, I do not want to create a duplicate on my machine because that would be defeating the purpose of the external drive.

You can import your media a couple different ways. If you plan on keeping the media on the external drive, I would just direct iTunes to read the media folder on the external. Here are the steps on how to make that change.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

You would need at least CS3 with ACR 4.6 to natively edit NEFs from a D90 in PS:

It might also work to use the DNG Converter 4.6 or newer to convert the NEF files to DNGs and then those might open in your older CS2 ACR, but I’m not sure, since it’s a 9 year old program I haven’t used in years.

WHat version if iPhoto? Where is your iPhoto library located?

BAckup your iPhoto library, depress and hold the option and command keys while launching iPhoto until the first aid window comes up and repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database
