Hard to Multi record in Logic Pro X

I am recording a vocal track with a virtual piano track. I arm both tracks to record, but the piano will not record unless the track in also highlighted. This is INSANE. Is there a way to get logic pro x to behave in a "normal" manner? If a the R is red and ready to go, it should record, period. But this is not so.
To recap
I have one midi piano track
one vocal track
to get them both to record at once, I have to first arm the tracks with the vocal track highlighted.
The midi track does not record.
I then highlight the midi track, and both record.
If I start with the midi track highlighted, the vocal track does not record.
What am I missing here? And how did I fall into this in the first place.
I have been using logic for 5 years, and before that Digital Performer, which NEVER had any weirdness like this.
Is this 2014? How did I end up in 1983 again?

Sharp9th wrote:
By the way, I see art of sound has both tracks highlighted (selected)
This is what I am complaining about.
You should not have to do this IN ADDITION to arming the tracks.
I'll add a #11 to that sharp 9, or possibly a flat13th instead.
Go to Settings/Recording and Enable  Auto-Demix By MIDI Channel if Multitrack Recording.
Make sure the MIDI channel on the piano track Inspector is set to the same channel that the keyboard is transmitting on.
It's part of Logic's archaic MIDI architecture related to the environment.

I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop? My sound is running through the Saffire Pro 40 Interface (Focusrite) into external speakers with powered amps.
Also, When I record I am hearing little pops in the system. I have checked all of my meters and they are not clipping. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop?

Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?

This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • Problems recording with Logic Pro 8

I just purchased an Aluminum MacBook 2.4 GHz (2 GB memory) and Logic Pro Studio. I couldn't justify spending the extra cash on a MacBook Pro as the specs are way too similar nowadays.......except for Firewire. I didn't think I'd need a Firewire port as USB 2.0 is supposed to be faster than Firewire 400. So I have an audio interface connected via USB 2.0 and a 1 TB external hard drive running at 7200 RPM also connected via USB 2.0. Problem is, each track in Logic takes forever to load before it records (i.e. I press record and have to wait like a minute before the recording begins), and subsequent tracks added are not recording or working properly. I'm recording everything to the external hard drive and now am thinking the USB 2.0 is not fast enough for recording processes. But if USB 2.0 is faster than Firewire 400, why should I be having this trouble? Do you need Firewire 800 to record to an external hard drive properly?
I'm beside myself thinking that I just purchased a $500 program and won't be able to run it on my MacBook the way I intended. It seems like the computer should be able to handle the workload of the program. Would swapping out the internal hard drive for a 7200 RPM drive work for recording as long as I immediately backed up the data on the external drive to save space? What about upgrading to 4 GB of memory? Will I have trouble regardless as long as I am recording several tracks on one song?
I can't tell if this is a hardware problem or not. Maybe my problem is I had this grand idea in my head that I'd be able to max out Logic Pro on a MacBook just like I could on a Mac Pro Desktop. But I've seen friends of mine max out Pro Tools on OLDER MacBook Pros; what gives? Any and all insight/help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah i just reformatted the external hard drive and am going to attempt recording again tomorrow. I have a Seagate external drive that's supposed to be Mac compatible, but I've reformatted it twice. I've read that if the format is not correct then you're going to have recording problems. If that doesn't work then I'll try the internal HD and look into a different external drive.
I know that USB 2.0 is only "theoretically" faster than Firewire 400, but I'd like to find a USB external HD that is known to support the highest USB speeds available. But I dunno if USB 2.0 has a protocol that supports 2 way data transfer like Firewire, so I'm not sure how much it would matter.

  • No sound from MIDI instrument / recording on Logic Pro 7

Audio interface is set up properly.
Logic Pro 7 says it records the midi signal, and the notes show up in the midi region (the rectangular box in the arrange window where you see the wave if its an 'audio' recording) but there is no output sound, even though it says in the bottom right that there is a MIDI output signal and i can see the notes on the screen with my own eyes.
Normal line in / audio tracks record and play back fine. It's baffling!

Its just a software instrument in logic. Tried a few different ones. in the bottom right, when i play a note it says that the output is on channel 3 (same as input, which is set to 3 on the midi keyboard. Audi interface is connected by usb, and it plays all other sounds from computer including line in / audio tracks on logic, as well as the tutorial track.
Recent garage band convert. When you recorded a midi region with a software instrument with that you could hear it straight away. Is there something i need to know about routing the output through something else in logic?
    Thanks for your help

  • How to convert a software instrument recording to an audio recording? Logic pro X

Hey I'm having serious trouble converting a software instrument recording to an audio recording. I'm trying to record this drum beat, then convert it to an audio file so i can chop it up and sample it on the EXS24. could anyone possibly provide any helpful insight to my dilema? Thank you very much!

im sorry i should've clarified a little further. it is on the drum machine feature in Logic pro X. i want to sample  the 808 kick so i can change the pitch of it in the exs24 but whenever i go to "bounce in place" this message pops up:
""Bounce Regions" in Place can only process regions on audio tracks and/or software instrument tracks. Click      “OK” to deselect all regions on other tracks and continue."
do you have any answers to this specifically?

  • Recording in Logic Pro 8

I do not know why, but now when I record in Logic, it takes a while for the computer to actually record. The ball thing spins for a couple of minutes. This is sure annoying, given that in the past, music recorded almost immediately. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on and if this can be fixed.

Two options here: the key on the A80 is broken, or you have inadvertently assigned the key to something in Logic (this happens to quite a few users). I know how to fix the 2nd option: Open the *Controller Assignments* window (cmd-K) and see if G4 aka *90 4F Lo7* (in *Input Message* column) is being used. If so, select and delete the assignment to get musical use of the G4 back.
O, and how this happened: at one point you have probably activated *learn mode* (cmd-L) without realizing it. In learn mode Logic picks up the first incoming MIDI message and assigns that to a controllable parameter, effectively filtering out whatever MIDI message was used.

  • When I playback or record in logic pro 8, its leaving a black space behind the white line. why

Do i have to upgrade to the latest version ? or is there an update that can fix the bug ?

Thank you very much for your reply Octopi,
Sorry i'm french, everything is not totally clear. I effectively have a DVD of logic 8, but as you say there is no fix for this in logic 8.
So the only way now to use a non-bugged logic pro is to buy the last version : Logic Pro X.
If it's the only way, i will buy the last version, but what about all the Gigas of sound library... ? they also are on the last version ?
The last version is not an update, it's the full software ? it costs 179 euros

  • Recording Audio For Timeline With Logic Pro In Real Time

I do commentaries on videos and was wondering if there is an easier way than what im doing now..
Right now I export my video from premiere to a bad quality version and import it into logic pro and record the commentary there.
Then I have to bounce the audio and import it back to premiere.
Is there a way to get the same plugins that are in logic pro to be used in premieres audio mixer??
A dream come true would be that I could just record directly into premiere with all of the effects coming from logic pro.
Anyone know of any kind of solution or trick or anything so I dont have to keep going back and forth and to make this easier???
Thanks for any info I really appreciate it!!

I just hate going back and forth from premiere and logic and all the extra time wasted exporting the files so they will work with eachother.
I just thought of something else.... Is there a way that I can get the video in premiere to play the same time I push record in logic pro and maybe sync with it?
Like if I push record in logic the video in premiere will start playing then when I push stop in logic pro it will stop in premiere or at least stay in sync with it so the timing will be right?
if anyone has any ideas throw some out there I would love to hear them.
    Thanks!

  • File structure of logic pro/studio

    hi
can someone explain the file structure of logic studio/logic pro please?
(on the pc, most things were in the for example: emagic folder in program files).
is there an equivalent of program files folder on mac? where i can explore apps
would logic pro install into one folder? nice and simple?
would it be ok to install logic pro all on internal system drive (macbook).
    or external hard drive essential?
does logic pro require 2 hard drives? one for installation and one for audio data/recording onto?
    thanks

*Logic Pro itself will be installed in the application folder - just the app itself
*Additional Content like Loops - IRs for Space Designer or Plug In components and Presets for 3rd party Plug Ins will be installed in HD/Library/Audio/
    and
*HD/Application Support/Logic (Channel Strip settings/EXS Factory Samples and Instruments/KCs/Templates/Ultrabeat samples/Tuning tables and so on)
For your own presets and channelstrip settings the same folder will be created in your Useraccount.
You can install all the Jam Packs and Loops on an external drive during the installation process when you have a Desktop computer. On a Laptop you'll have to install it to your system drive first and then move it to an external
which leads me to your next question
*Yes it is very much advisable (but not a "must") to run Samples/Loops from an external drive and if you're recording a lot of Audio then get another external for the Audio files. Daisy chaining FW drives works well, getting an additional eSATA drive with an adaptor card will give you an additional port and is a good solution

  • Swapping songs between Logic Pro and Express-incompatibility?

We have a bunch of audio tracks that we recorded on Logic Pro 7.1. A musician has Logic express and wants to use the tracks and over dub and then send them back. When we brought the portable drive over, all the songs loaded fine minus plug ins not available. When we hit play though, the CPU overloads on the G5 with Express. We transfered all the songs to the computers hard drive so not to rely on the firewire. Also, it has 2 G of RAM for the processor. If we build the tracks up from the bottom, dragging each audio track in one at a time, then it works. This is a hassle though since it make collaboration tough. Any thoughts on why we are having incompatability issues?
    Dual G5 2.5 2gRAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There is very little difference, mostly in content (Jampacks, Waveburner, Mainstage..and a few of the high end plugins). Other than that they're functionally identical. same audio engine, you wouldn't know the difference just by looking at them.

  • Using MainStage sounds in Logic Pro?

I'm not sure if this is possible, I am new to using Logic Pro.  I was wondering, is it possible to use the sound plug ins that are on MainStage for recording in Logic Pro?  I bought MainStage with the understanding that I could do this but now I'm having a hard time figuring it out.  I would just like to use more sounds, like more synths particularly, in Logic Pro.  Thanks for the help!

Logic is a huge and complex app - you really need to read the manual.
    To get you started:
Select or create a Software Instrument track in Logic's Arrange window. You can click on the little + button near the top of the track list and select Software Instrument.
Now, look at the Inspector area on the left. It should show the Channel strip for this track. The top slot has the word [Setting] in grey. If you click-hold on that slot, you'll get a menu of the all the possible Channel Strip settings, organized by category. If you load them, they will load complete strips containing synths or samplers plus FX plugins.
You can also click on the slot just above the one that says [Stereo Out] under where it says I/O. That gives you direct access to all of Logic's synths & samplers plus any 3rd party AU's (Audio Unit plugins) you may have. Select one, and then you can choose settings for that synth or sampler.
    Hope this helps....

  • Can I authorize Logic Pro on both my Laptop and Desktop Mac

I use my Macbook Pro for mobile recording using Logic Pro and I was wondering if I can authorize my Mac Pro desktop to use Logic Pro too? I purchased Logic Pro from the iTune store, so I don't have disks to install from.  Using the Desktop at my home studio is much more convenient then using the laptop.

Yes, just log into the mac store and it should appear under the Purchases tab and you can download it again.

  • Logic Pro X Audio cutting in and out

When I am trying to record in Logic Pro X the audio seems to cut in and out at random points.
I have a MP3 track that I am recording to and it just randomly cuts out. Even when just playing that track by itself the same thing happens though never at the same spots. If I open the MP3 in Itunes or Quicktime there is no problem with the track.
As this seriously messes with the time of the piece and makes the recording long and painful I need help.
Is there some type of connection I am missing? I am using an old Presonus Firebox as an Interface, it unfortunately has adaptors to take it from firewire to thunderbolt. Recording into a 27" Imac that is very souped up and shouldn't have any problems until I hit a hundred tracks or so and I am only trying two.

It's most likely the Fusion drive, one of the symptoms is audio cutting out.
There are several related threads in this forum regarding audio problems with the Fusion drive.
This thread alone would take a couple of days to read.

  • Do you have to add effects to Logic Pro X loops when mixing a song?

    Hi everyone,
I have a question that has been puzzling me and I cannot seem to find an answer for! I have searched high and low on the internet and still cannot find the answer and so I would be grateful to everyones help with this issue.
My question is that you hear so much about the fact that when you are recording and mixing a track that different instruments for example the Bass Drum and the Bass guitar occupy similar frequencies and we are told that this is why you have to add effects to these instruments when mixing but what I want to know is are they talking about just organic instruments like real drums and a real bass guitar that you manually play and record to Logic Pro X`s audio tracks? Or should you treat the Loops exactly the same? And should you also add effects to the Logic Pro X loops when you are mixing those specific tracks?
For example if I add a Drum Loop or Bass Loop to a project and then start mixing the song should I add any effects for example EQ, Compression to these Loops? And what would be the best effects to add to the Bass and the Drums when mixing to help them stand out in the mix?
    Many thanks.

    Jamiesroom wrote:

Whoever told you that overly generalized rule, please stop listening to that person .
The way you post your question (and they are good questions) points out a big problem nowadays. There is so much cookie cutter solutions out there like if you have this, then use that, if you want to get this sound, press that button. The problem with that is that you you often have no idea why you are doing that in the first place.
Let me give you a simple example about gardening (sorry about that). If I grow tomatoes and look up on the internet how often to water them, I can find an answer "water the tomatoes once a week". I might do that and result is that the tomatoes will die. What I didn't take into account is that the advice was given from someone growing tomatoes in Russia, and I live in California where I might need to water them once a day. So, the answer you are looking for is not "how often to water the tomato", instead you have to learn how much water, depending on your climate, the tomato needs"
Your music is the tomato. So the question is not what button to press (how often to water), but what button needs to be pressed, depending on your specific recordings (your climate).
If your bass drum and and bass guitar are more further apart frequency wise, then there might be no need to EQ them, it depends
Nobody should or could tell you what to do, unless he or she sits next to you at the mix and "hears' what is going on and what needs to be done.
Don't get me wrong, I don't say that there is a lot of great advice and general guidelines out there. The problem is when you apply that blindly without knowing a little bit why that advice is give and how to apply that, or if it applies to your situation at all.
In addition: The skills and knowledge about the theory is as important as the skills and experience of listening and judging your recording/mix and decide what action to take. You have to learn what to listen to and what you hear. If you don't know how distortion sounds then you miss out on fixing that issue. If you don't know how a pumping compressor sounds, then you miss out on fixing that issue.
I think you get the idea
    Hope that helps
