HardDisk almost full suddenly on a Desktop 3000 S200 Vista

Would someone be kind enough to give me a hand?  My Desktop is Lenovo 3000 S200 (9684-A24)
 running on a Win Vista.
The system was purchased 5 months ago.  I haven't kept many files or install much software.  But the hard disk, originally having a 320GB in memory, is almost full now.  It shows that there's 293GB being utilized on the SW_Preload(C : ).
It seems that the system is still running OK even though the speed is no quite satisfactory.  I'm afraid I'll facing problem in the near future.
Please give me some advice if anyone has got the experience & fix it before.  Thanks a lot in advance!!

hello the resuce and recovery must have made base backups in ur system also try disabling volume shadow copy only if you dont require it
i would sujjest a nift utility like tune up utilities 2008 believe me it works great and saved 4 gb on my ultimate

  • Harddisk almost full

    HI everyone
My harddisk has a storage of 27 GB, but it has been taken up by 20GB. How can i free up more space?
BTW, I have already minimise the songs, movies, pictures storage.
Hoping to delete some program that takes up the storage.
I am a new MAC user., hence not familiar with the function of apple.
    Please help Thanks.
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Do you use Garage Band? If not, deleting it and its related filed will free up almost 2GB. Any other application you never use can also be safely trashed.
Monolingual (free) will delete language files (about .5GB) that you don't use. You can also go to /Library/Printers (the first / indicates the hard drive) and delete any printer drivers you don't use. If you don't use HP or Epson (and don't plan to) just drag the folders to the trash and empty it. If you find you need one of them in the future, they can be reinstalled from the install disc.

I have an iphone 3GS and suddenly am getting a "storage almost full message" even though I have 1.4 GB of free space. Now I cannot text.  How do I trouble shoot this? I recently upgraded to version 6.1.3 if that helps.

When you sync using iTunes on your computer, do you see a lot of "Other" at the bottom of the iTunes Summary Page for your iPhone?  If you do, try a "Restore iPhone ...".  That should help.
Hopefully that would do it for you.  If not, the next (more drastic) step would be to restore again as above, but choose "Restore as New" and then manually sync.  Omit any apps that might be suspcious in their space use (primarily Game Center apps).

All of a sudden our fairly new Air's memory is almost full. The disk utility lists almost 50 GB as "Other". What has happened to our memory? I am new to Apple products.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
When it comes to clearing space on a drive, you have to decide how much to clear.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data.
Although you may be told by other contributors to this site that you should keep some fixed percentage (such as 10% or 15%) of the space on the boot drive available, that advice has no basis in fact as far as I can tell. The amount of available space you need depends on your usage pattern. I don't know how much you should have, and I don't make recommendations based on what I don't know. It should certainly be more than 9 GB.
If your data collection is growing quickly, then, depending on the size of the startup volume, you may need more than 10% available space in order to avoid the risk of filling it up, which can lead to a boot failure. If your data is relatively static, you may need less than 10%. I've seen no evidence that there's a loss of performance when available space falls below any threshold higher than the one Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the available space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
    About local snapshots
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then drag or copy — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Press return. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Why is my Macbook pro with OS lion prompting me my startup disk almost full when i have deleted many files, photos and videos? Even thrashing them doesn't help. There seems to be an automatic space usage in the background

I have deleted many unwanted files and apps and yet the available space keeps depleting every time i am using my Macbook Pro. I believe under the OS 10.7.4 one of the features is it backups or has backgrounding features which uses memory. Sometimes even when i hv 8GB space after using my Macbook Pro for say 2hrs surfing internet and using Pages which has a "Save Version" feature suddenly my 8GB goes down to 300+MB only and it starts prompting me "My Startup Disk is almost full" once it reaches 1GB space left. How can i get more space.... Please someone can help me? Do i need to re-format my hardisk??!! Any help out there is greatly appreciated.
My original HD is 320GB. And i don't hv too many Apps installed. I do have abt 50-70apps. I do have many photos and videos stored in iPhoto's Library though.

One thing I've noticed is that a shared tab pops up when I open the finder under "favorites" with a random connection. It's called hp68b... None of my friends that I live with have this and we all use the same internet. Two days ago when I would click it and click get info, it said it was a pc. When I checked it today it said it is a "sharepoint" and looks like a harddrive.
I took it too the store after i spilt water on it but when I got it back it ran perfectly fine. I don't know a lot about computer so if somebody could help me. It says I'm connected to it and I can't disconnect or delete it. I don't know if the guy at the computer store put something in my computer and is sharing all my files.

  • "Your Startup disk is almost full"  How do you fix this?

Someone please help! More and more frequently my Mac Mini (Mac OS X Version 10.5.8) say that "My startup disk is almost full" So I deleted everything non critical to the maintenance and function of my Mac Mini but still it tells me that my "Start up disk is almost full" Also some important information. I tried installing Boot camp to my mac but halfway though the installation something went wrong. I took out Windows XP (the program i was trying to place on Boot Camp) and a message saying "No bootable device" appears. It appears everytime I try to turn my Mac on unless i hold down the command key during startup which then gives me the option to select "Hard Drive". Also some applications Ex. iTunes will refuse to startup at all and say "iTunes cannot be opened. An unknown error has occurred (13014). I do not know what (13014) is and I cannot find it anywhere. Can someone *PLEASE HELP ME!* I think the problem can be solved by getting the failed Bootcamp program on but I am not totally sure.

OK, so you have one of the first Intel Mac Mini's that came out. I also have one of those models but now has a bad logic board.
What about the other part of the question above?
Do you have 2 Hard Drive icons on your desktop still?
    Or just the one?
If you have 2 icons, then you still have 2 partitions...
If you only have the one HD icon, then your HD is only 60 GB in size and you are running out of room as you only have 8.6 GB left which is getting minimal...
You may be running out of HD space as it appears you only have a 60 GB Hard Drive.
You may have a lot of music, movies, photos, etc., that are taking up a lot of space.
If that is the case, I would suggest buying an external Hard Drive to store your music, movies, photos, and other items like that on which will free up your internal drive.
I have an external 500 GB Hard Drive attached to my Mac MIni... This gives me a lot of extra room to grow and I also have it partitioned so I can use Time Machine to backup my internal HD...
If you don't already have some kind of backup, an external drive is one good way to have a backup.

  • Startup Disk Almost Full, what can i do??

When I'm adding things to my iTunes, or even just start up my laptop, i keep getting a message that says my startup disk is almost full and i need to delete stuff off of it. Where is the startup disk that i can look at a list of files so i can delete them or is there something else i can do like buy an external hard drive? Or do i just need to update my macbook software?

It's almost certainly your stuff (music, video, etc) that's filling up the disk.
On a laptop, your startup disk is typically the only disk.
It's also the disk where your home directory and desktop are located.
Start by looking at your home directory, desktop, downloads and such; select the detailed view in Finder, and look for big files, or stuff you don't need any more.
    Empty your trash, too.
Get yourself an external disk, connect it, and relocate some of your stuff there.
If you can delete enough stuff to load this, have a look at the [GrandPerspective|http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net> tool.
This forum is the Mac OS X Server forum, and you're almost certainly not running the Server version of the software here. Here are the client forums for the recent client versions: [Tiger client 10.4|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=177],
[Leopard client 10.5|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=235], and [Snow Leopard client 10.6|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=263]. The Mac OS X client software is far more commonly used on a Mac laptop than is the Server software.

  • Why do I get "Storage almost full" warnings with multiple Gb free?

I have a 32Gb iPad Mini (running latest OS updates and all current apps), and keep getting "Storage Almost Full" warnings, even when I have 3, 4 or 5Gb free space (according to desktop sync)?

About all I use it for when I get these errors  is reading a book. No apps are running other than iBooks. I happens before and after a power-off.
I'm going to see if I can hunt down a good memory reporting app to see if I can find out what's going on...

  • IOS: Storage almost full (bug)

Hello everyone, yesterday I install the iOS8 in my iPhone 5s (16GB). Before the installation had 9GB of free space, but today suddenly the iphone shows the warning message of "Storage almost full"
I check the size of my apps, songs, photos, contacts, etc. and i found the iphone was using 7.52GB for "Other" stuff:
Any one have the same problem?

I would agree with that observation. I have created a few screen shots to document the speed the storage space disappears. In less than one hour almost three GBs "magically" were lost without any activity on the iPad. I also noticed this to happen once iTunes Match was activated, so your assumption with iCloud may be right ... Glad to hear btw, the same problem occurs without using backups, this means that the originating data on the device is not corrupt ... So, time for Apple to go and fix this, indeed!

  • Erroneous Warning Startup Disk Almost Full

Infrequently I get these erroneous warnings "Your startup disk is almost full" when I know this is very false with the 250G hard drive only a third full. It happens on a PowerMac G5 dual 2.7GHz 2.25G 250G and a PowerBook G4 1.7GHz 1G 80G, both running OS 10.4.11. But in my long searches on the web including Apple Support and Forums I see it also happens to many running OS 10.5.
In this condition, the machine is all but frozen. Applications remain running but won't accept any entry which would involve hard drive use, and if they require hard drive use to quit, they won't quit. Force Quit may or may not work, sometimes requiring hard shutdown. I can't save any open document to the HD or even to my iDisk which also then erroneously shows "Disk Full" (actually 90% empty) (but I can save it to a flash drive). Info on startup disk during this condition shows full with a small number of megabytes free.
I don't download music or image files which could fill the hard drive. My applications are from highly dependable companies and are not going to suddenly fill the HD with hundreds of gigs of temp files.
I am certain that the hard drive is not full. I am certain that the OS's seeing and reporting that the hard drive is full is in error. Some crazy app filling it with temp files could not possibly also do the same to an iDisk.
Simple Restart always solves the problem, info on the HD reports again correctly that the hard drive is a third full and 2/3rds empty. And it runs fine until the next time it happens. Usually I simply resume the app I was using, which has never yet caused the problem to recur.
All the hundreds of expert replies to this topic I've ever found in Apple and elsewhere on the web say the HD is actually full, either that they've actually filled it w/ music or images, or some app suddenly has generated 200GB of temp files. For some questioners those are the answer. But for many of us they're not the answer at all, the experts are not reading & understanding our questions. We're getting the warning when our HD's cannot possibly be anywhere near full.
Again- we're getting this erroneous warning, all but hanging our machines, when the hard drive cannot possibly be full. I KNOW the report that the hard drive is full is WRONG. The report that the HD is full has to be an OS X error.
Possible clues: One time, the G5 gave the warning within a few minutes after every repeated restart; I Repaired Permissions, and it quit the repeated warnings-- whether repairing permissions fixed it I don't know. Both of these machines must have Classic running almost all the time: the G5 Classic is running only Pagemaker, and the PowerBook Classic is running only Dynodex.
Would someone please address this real problem?
    Thanks!!

    Hi Packwood,
There must be a solution to your problem.
    Are you using FileVault perchance?
Tough to recommend anything when I'm certain you've tried many things so far, and are frustrated without a cure.
Have you tried making a new User to test?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Start Up Disk almost full message?

When I down load photos from my camera to iPhoto I get a message telling me my Start Up Disk is almost full and I should consider deleting files.
In addition, videos from my camera are not being imported as they previously were. I get a message that certain jpg are not recognized.
I have not changed my camera or the way I download photos and the downloads work fine to other computers.
What is causing the problem and what should I do?

    Liat:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Assuming you have sufficient free space on your HD consider this: did this begin after upgrading to Leopard? If so then it's a problem with the differences between Tiger and Leopard and privileges. I had to do the following go fix my library:
1 - open Terminal and type “sudo chmod -R -N “. Note the space after the N.
2 - drag the iPhoto library into the Terminal window and hit the Return key.
3 - enter your admin password when prompted and hit the Return key again.
That should fix it for you.
Thomas is correct about free space. It is desirable to have a minimum of 15GB free for optimal system and application performance. The system can run with as low a 5GB or even a little less but not without taking a big performance hit. If you accidently let the free space get down to 500 KB or less, you can get to a point where your can't boot. A few have gotten there.
    Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.
