Harddisk not always mounting

Hi
I have an annoying problem with a harddisk which sometimes works as it should and sometimes won't be mounted.
It contains 2 partitions: 1 formatted as hfs+j and 1 ntfs for bootcamp.
When the drive is not mounted and I want to shutdown the system will take forever and I have to make a forced shutdown.
I tried to manually mount the volumes but that didn't work.
I had this problem before and I thought the harddisk was damaged and I bought a new one. After a few month it begins again.
Any ideas?
Thx
Chutulu

Yes I have already tried this but it didn't work. Either I mistyped the command or it is something else. I found the command in one of the forums:
chflags nohidden /Volumes/name
Killall Finder
But I will try again when I am at home.
Diskutility will gather informations for ever when I open it and the volumes are invisible but the Systemprofiler has no problem?
I have also tried to manually mount the drives with the terminal and hdiutil.
Either I get the error that the volume does not exist (sudo hdiutil mount /Volumes/name), something is happening but not as it is supposed to ie a white line then when I cancel still nothing (sudo hdiutil mount /dev/disk1s1) or that the command does not work (don't remember)
When I force shutdown the mac, remove the harddisk put it back and then restart everythingis fine again!?
I hope it's just a problem with Leopard and not a dying drive
Thx Chu

  • External drive does not always mount?

I have a 1 terrabyte Lacie external FW drive that does not always mount. Are there any issues with Tiger recognizing such a large drive? Is there anything I can do to make it mount better?

hello and welcome to Apple Discussions!
You might try using Disk Utility, (Applications/Utilities) and see if the Lacie mounts in the panel on the left under MacintoshHD. If it does mount, you can try to repair it using Disk Utility.
Are you sure you have your Finder preferences set correctly? Click a clear area on your Desktop then in the Menu click Finder>Preferences. Under, "Show These Items" on the Desktop, make sure you have first three boxes checked.
Also, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions. That can fix a myriad of bugs.

  • TM drive does not always mount when reconnected

Forgive me if this has been covered, but I could not find it in the archive.
I am using a Fantom 500GB drive for backup from my laptop. Every few days, when I reconnect the drive, it will not mount and backups will not happen. The drive is both Firewire and USB - I generally use Firewire. I have tried repowering the drive, unplugging and reconnecting in all the various permutations, and the drive will not mount. The two things that will make it mount are 1) reboot the computer, or 2) connect the USB cable (although, the Firewire will still not work until after a reboot). Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Andy

    Andy,
I was just reading some reviews on Newegg dot com for the Fantom Titanium-II TFD500U16 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache USB 2.0 External Hard Drive which I presume is the one you have purchased. There are a lot of negative reviews which suggests that it should be avoided. Read them for yourself.
You get what you pay for and for my hard earn dollar I would be wanting a reliable interface and a reliable mechanism. Seems to me that one or both of those are not up to scratch in your case. There are a lot of good quality Firewire/USB devices on the market such as those from OWC aka Other World Computing. Spend the dollars and buy quality and you wont regret it. You have the best computer on the market with the best OS so pamper it a bit.
    Cheers

  • Ipod not (always) mounting

I am having the same problem as some of the other users. I can no longer get my iPod to mount on my G4 (was 10.3.9 but have since upgraded to 10.4.3). When I plug in the firewire cable the apple logo appears, the hard drive starts running and then I get the OK to Disconnect message.
It's not the firewire cable as I can still recharge my iPod via the charger (I also reset the connection as per another thread on the same problem http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=177128&tstart=15
    I also tried:
    - Several ipod resets
    - Disk mode
    - Disconnect all FW devices, except the ipod
    - Apple's firewire troubleshooting recommendations (power off, etc.)
    - Disk Utility (does not see the ipod via firewire)
    - Deleted the com.apple.ipod.plist
    - restarting my mac
Eventually i did get the ipod to mount and used the Disk Utility to do a Erase (format), followed by a restore of the iPod updater. I seem to have problems with iPod Updater 2005-11-?? not workng so I trashed it and used the iPod Updater 2005-09-23.
Twice I got the message: no sysinfo file on the ipod disk during all of this but I still some how got the iPod software restored. It's hard to track of what's really going on because iTunes is also trying to do it's thing as well.
I reimported my files. Used my iPod. Later when I came back same problem. I plug it in and get the OK to Disconnect message.
Since I first posted this problem I have upgraded to 10.4.3. The same problem persists.
One last comment: on two or three occassions the ipod has mounted. The next time it won't. Can't figure it out for the life of me.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It looks like the latest updater: iPod Updater 2006-01-10 may have fixed the problem.

  • Trackpoint in Thinkpad X121e not always working

    Hi,
my Lenovo Thinkpad X121e runs with ArchLinux x86_64 and all packages updated (no testing versions). All worked fine, but since a while i have the problem, that the trackpoint sometimes does not work. This occurs randomly at startup. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If it works, it keeps working all the time the machine is running. If it is not running, after a reboot it will most likely work. This problem seems to occur randomly at about every tenth start of the machine. I remember that the trackpoint did work without problems in the past, but some update in the last few months has killed it. I currently cannot figure out, why this happens.
I attached the dmesg and lsmod output for the working and non-working state of the trackpoint. If you need more info, please ask. I hope someone can help me :-)
    Thanks.
Edit: Added also the Xorg.0.logs for working and non-working states.

OK, ignore my last post pointing the finger at udev.
I poked around in the kernel code; it was actually kinda fun. Now this looks more like either a hardware problem (unlikely) or a driver bug (more likely) to me:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1894892
Thought I'd pass along what I found.
During a boot, the kernel will "walk" all the buses looking for devices. The methods used to find them on some buses (like PCI) are well defined, while others are not (like the serial bus). On those buses that aren't well defined the kernel will (probably) literally "probe" the bus trying to not only find a device, but also determine the exact chip installed.
It's the second case that's involved in your problem. The serio driver found the Synaptics touchpad device (via probing). If you look closely at the kernel log, you'll see it's attached to your i8042 (PS/2) chip.  But... since this touchpad device has a "passthru port", it has to perform extra steps to determine if there's a chip on the "other side" of that touchpad chip. In your case there is, and it's your Trackpoint.
If it's successful in finding the Trackpoint chip, the drivers/input/mouse/trackpoint.c kernel driver file will put the following in your syslog:
IBM TrackPoint firmware: 0x0e, buttons: 3/3
Which is what you see in your logs when it works. Since you don't see it when it fails, then the code probably isn't being executed or it's failing with an error condition.
Now... when a driver finds a device, it usually (but not always) creates some virtual "files" in the /sys directory... and that's what will happen if that trackpoint.c code is executed...
input: TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint as /devices/platform/i8042/serio4/serio5/input/input11
So... one question is... "Does it create something in /sys when it fails?". From looking at the code, I highly doubt it.
Although this looks somewhat improbable, if the error path for this section of the code in the trackpoint_detect function of /drivers/input/mouse/trackpoint.c file is executed then it looks like it might match your error:
    psmouse->private = kzalloc(sizeof(struct trackpoint_data), GFP_KERNEL);
    if (!psmouse->private)
    return -ENOMEM;
Perhaps you might want to put some sort of printk call in there to see if that's what's happening. Heck, also add one to the top of the function to see if it's even being called.
    Good luck.

  • WD external hard drive could not be mounted

    Hello everyone,
I have a 1TB Western Digital Elements external hard drive, that in the past I had to remove from it's case and use with a SATA cable, because it wasn't getting enough power.
When connecting it like this to my 2012 MacBook Pro I had no issues.
I moved around a lot for a period of time, so it too moved around with me, but I always stored it carefully in my luggage. What I'm getting to is, when I finally settled down, I tried accessing my files and all I got was an initial "wirr" from the drive and then nothing. It won't show up in Finder, but I can see it in Disk Utility. The little light where the power connects turns on and I can feel it working when I touch it.
If I try to mount it though, I get ''The disk “Elements” could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.", but First Aid has it's options disabled.
Is there any way I can rescue my data?
    Thank you,
    Nicole

To anyone who has the same question:
As it seems there's nothing else that can be done but to use a file recovery program such as FileSalvage. I got everything back

  • External Hard Drive connected to AEBS does not auto mount

Just upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.5. I have a AEBS running 5.3.2 airport utility with a LaCie HD connected to it.
In Tiger, my external hard drive would auto mount onto the desktop every time the computer turned on or woke up from sleeping etc.
In Leopard, my external drive will not auto mount. It does not show up in the sidebar under devices. It does not show up in the disk utility. To access it, I have to go the the finder sidebar, select my AEBS under shared, then select my HD. Also, I did check show connected servers and external disk on the desktop in the finder preferences. Also, not sure if this matters but the icon on my external drive on my desktop is the blue drive with three people holding hands and not the brighter blue one with the wireless signal logo.
In tiger my external HD basically acted like any other folder that was always there and not like a networked drive that I had to go and connect to. I want to go back to that. I heard this has to do with leopord no longer having the airdisk utility??
    thanks

Try making an alias of one of the top-level folders in your external (AEBS-connected) drive, drag it to the desktop, and then put it in your Login Items.
    --> System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items
You can simply drag the folder alias into the Login Items window.
When you next log in, the folder will be automatically opened. Alas, it doesn't give you instant access to the entire external drive, but you can back out a level to see the entire drive. It isn't quite what you had with Tiger, but perhaps it will suffice.
If you leave the aliased folder on your desktop, you have a skinny approximation to the mounted volume that you had with Tiger.

  • Time machine - "the backup disk image could not be mounted"

SInce a few days, I am unable to backup via Time Machine.
    I always get the message:
    TIME MACHINE ERROR
The backup disk image could not be mounted
I use an Apple Time Capsule and still have more than enough free space on it.
    Use OS X 10.5.5
    Help.....
    Tks

    Rosy,
*_"The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted" (Console - “Failed to mount disk image”)_*
First, it is important to distinguish this error message from another, similar Time Machine error that states “The backup volume could not be mounted”. This is important as the causes and cures for these two errors can be very different.
Consider each topic below separately. When one option does not resolve your issue, then move on the next one.
*Unmount the Backup Disk Image* (TC)
If, for some reason, you have manually mounted the Time Machine backup disk image (sparsebundle), or Time Machine failed to eject it after the previous backup, subsequent backups may fail. (Console - “Failed to mount disk image”… “Backup failed with error: 21”)
Eject the backup disk image (white drive icon) by either clicking the little Eject icon to the right of the disk image in the Finders’ Sidebar, or Ctrl-Click the drive icon on the desktop and select “Eject” from the contextual menu. Now try backing up again or launching Time Machine to view previous backups.
    *“Disconnect All Users…”:*
If your Time Machine backup drive (“Backup of Users Computer”) is mounted on your desktop or in the Sidebar of the Finder window. then Time Machine may think the drive is already in use. Alternatively, if the Time Capsule hard disk has been recently accessed by a Windows machine, it may not have fully relinquished control. Do the following:
Open Airport Utility and select the Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
Select “Disks” at top of window.
Click “Disconnect All Users…” at bottom of window.
    Close the Airport Utility.
    Now try Backing up again.
“I got it resolved. Apparently it had to do with one of the files being open on the disk from the drive. I had browsed the disk with one of my windows boxes here and it must have left one of the folders "open". Anyway, I rebooted the TC and we are good to go now.”
    *Proper Computer Name* #
Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
According to this article, [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
Let us know if any of the suggestions above resolves your issue.
    Cheers!

  • IPod 4G always mounts for disk use when Mac wakes from sleep

My 4G iPod is always mounting for disk use when my Mac (10.4.8, Dual 1.8 GHz G5) wakes from sleep, even though the settings for the iPod has "enable disk use" unselected. When I launch iTunes (latest version) the iPod promptly is unmounted. I have restored factory settings, I have reinstalled the computer's OS and iTunes with it.
What is going on and how can I make it normal?
    Dual 1.8 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iTunes 7.1, iPod 4G 20GB

    UPDATE:
I have started to turn off Bluetooth at night before I put my computer to sleep. I HAVE NOT HAD THE FIREWIRE RANDOM DISMOUNT PROBLEM SINCE. I do not know if this is a freak coincidence -- but so far, so much the better for my firewire drive.
Hope this helps someone else down the line... eh hem...

  • DAQmx and TDMS not always working

    Hello,
I am new to the DAQmx and TDMS vi's and am hoping someone will be able to help me. The attached code contains several case structures, however only one of them has the DAQmx and TDMS vi's running through them. My intent is to record the voltage output from two photodetectors as I scan the current of a diode laser controller.  When I run this code it does not always record the values while I am scanning and when I quit the program the TDMS file viewer will show me no data. Sometimes, but rarely, it will show me some data. The stacked sequence within the case structure is the code that runs the laser controller and a couple of translational mounts. The DAQmx and TDMS vi's that should record the data are just next to that.
    Thank you!
    Alfredo
    Solved!

    LDC3714B_v9_test.vi ‏305 KB

I just ran the code about 5 times and it only recorded the data I was expecting once even though I changed nothing. I am attaching the code with the subvi's.
What I mean by "only one of them has the DAQmx and TDMS vi's running through them" is that the data is only recorded using these vi's once only one of the many case structures is activated. I'm simply pointing out that the vi's are not used anywhere else.
Also in the DAQmxRead vi, should I have Analog 2D DBL or Analog 1D Waveform?
I think the problem with the inconsistency in my code might be because I have a Stached Sequence Structure within the Case Structure where the vi's are.
    Thank you.

  • External drive not auto mounting (anymore)

i have a external HDD for which I made an entry in fstab. I worked perfectly till now. After i installed udisks and wrapper 'devmon' all the other drive are now auto mounted but the one which has entry in fstab does not !
i believe fstab mounts it during the boot up and devmon mounts it during the awesome start up since I made devmon entry in .xinitrc. is it the udisks thats conflicting with fstab ?!?! i mean its unlikely to happen right ?

Actually that is an interesting question. I have an external drive connected to my router and I share it on the router IP address (obviously fixed) via samba. Is it still a bad idea to use fstab in such case?
Sometimes but not always I have a re-mount problem coming back from hibernate or suspend. Will it be solved if I move mount to mtab?

The two most likely culprits would be a faulty cable/charging block or a bad digitizer. Try charging the device with a different charger and cable. If the problem goes away, then the problem is with your charger. If it does not, try the basics of resetting, restoriing from back up, restoring as new. If you still have the problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store for evaluation.

  • Web Intelligence is not always working  well

i found web intelligence is not always working, sometime, when i try to open a document, it takes so long, sometimes, it is fast, sometimes when i try to refresh the report, it gives me error, i am wondering if someone knows what could cause this kind of issue? is it proxy? or something else?

    Tara,
there are many factors that can cause slow performance.  In those cases where it is sometimes fast, it may be due to caching -- another user recently requested the same report and the report is in the server's cache, so instead of running the report from the start it sends the cache to you.  In other cases there may be no cache built up so you get stuck waiting for cache and your report comes up slowly.  There are a couple of techniques for tracking down slow performance, but mostly it happens due to either a database problem or an overworked applications/web server, or poor communication/LAN/Network lines.  Depending on your expertise you'll gravitate to checking that aspect out first and investigating one of the aspects to see where a bottleneck is getting produced.  Another technique is to add -trace to your service startups to add more verbose messages to your logs.  Adding trace will help you to see more of what is going on in the background.  I guess it's a matter of digging in and following your instincts until you can nail down the culprit.
    Thanks,
    John
