HardDrive enclosure

What size HardDrive enclosure would I need for my HD from iBook G3 ?
its a Toshiba HDD2169P 30.00GB
Thank You

You need an enclosure which will accommodate a 2.5-inch IDE (ATA) hard drive. If you want to be able to start up from it, you need it to have a FireWire interface.
This was the least expensive one I found:

  • WD 500g fell down, now won't mount!

    Hello everyone,
I don't know if this is the right place to be asking this, but its a start.
I have bought a WD 500g My Book pro, I have almost 350g of info on it. Yesterday, my wife tripped over the cord and it fell down on the floor.
Now, when I plug it in I get this error message:
"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"
    Initialize.. Ignore .. or Eject
Ignore and eject nothing happens, when I hit initialize, it takes me to the disk utility.
I see the hard drive on the left panel named: "2.0 TB WD External Media"
Strangely, when I click on it it says: "2TB" as in 2 TeraByte of storage! Its suppose to be 500g, Only.
I know if I probably hit format, it will work again, but I really need the files on the Hard Disk. Is there anyway to get it to work?
PS. I tries Data Rescue II and Disk Warrior, nothing happened.
If anybody can help direct me to the solution or the right place to get help for this I would really appreciate it.
I can't take this to an APPLE store, I'm not in the states ATM.
    Thank you in advance.

It would be best to find out first if the hard drive itself has been damaged. Typically inside those prepackaged Harddrive enclosures you will find a regular 3 1/2" harddrive, either ATA/100 or a SATA type. Sometimes you might find a 2.5" drive, but at 500GB, its probably a SATA 3 1/2" drive.
With any luck its just the enclosure itself that is damaged, and not the hard drive. Physical trauma such as the read/write head(s) smashing into the platters can happen after a fall.
First off, the easiest thing to try is a new USB cable. Its a small possibility, but should be tried.
Do you have access to any IT personnel? If you dangle a case of beer in front of them, maybe they can help with the diagnostics. He/she can remove the drive from the Western Digital enclosure and hook it up to another system to determine if its salvageable and maybe pull the data.
As far as a Linux install is concerned, various Distros offer a LiveCD/DVD option which is a complete operating system on CD/DVD with no need to install. Sabayon Linux offers a specialized LiveCD ISO for download, as does Ubuntu. Download the disc image, burn it, and boot the system from the CD/DVD.
I haven't tried it yet, but there is probably enough intelligence within the usb subsystem on the Ubuntu LiveCD for it to automatically detect the HFS+ partition on your Western Digital external box.
JeffEmbracedDC below mentions a Windows software that will allow you to read HFS/+ partitions. You could always give that a go.

  • My WD 350GB external drive "shorts out" my iMac

    Hi,
I have a 3 year old WD 350GB external drive that I conenct to my iMac G5 (PPC).  I use it for Time Machine as well as Tunes and Pictures.   Lately, it's been shorting out and therefore shutting down my Mac.
It seems to occur when it "surges" or becomes active during a backup or when I access iTunes.       After I reboot the Mac after shutdown and plug the drive back in, it ususally results in another shutdown.     I have to wait, reboot the drive, plug the firewire into the Mac first then, plug it into the drive.
Inevitably though, during Time Machine it shuts down again.
    Any ideas?

Try the drive in another computer.   Maybe you have some bad software on your machine. Try the Apple store.
Try pluggin in you drive then booting from the installation disk.  Try holding down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your DVD. Click on right arrow key.

Thanks for your answer.  What are you referring to when you use the term "enclosure"?
An external harddrive without the harddrive is an enclosure.  You supply the drive.
Also, when I do buy a new drive, how do I transfer the data when the existing drive blows up my mac?
    With difficulty.
    I'd give OWC a call.
    You may need two externals.
    1) Your going to have to get a new external drive.  (( You could disassemble this dirve & place your questionable hd in the enclosure. So much for your warrenty maybe ))
    2) Your going to have to get an external harddrive enclosure.  This will have to be compatible with whatever hard drive is in you existing external drive. ( the drive could be bad hence not workie. ) ( You could copy the data to your computer. )

I bought a new 3tb internal drive for my windows machine so I can backup an external drive which I didn't know was mac formatted. When I was trying to extend the capacity of my internal drives in wndows so it would add another 3tb I accidentally chose my exteranal drive and it changed the master boot record although I cancelled the process the drive won't mount in my mac anymore. And I get those errors in the disck utility.
The data in it are very important I was trying to backup it to my sohotank harddrive enclosure which already had a 2tb and now a 3tb installed. Any help would be appreaciated.
I'm now trying to create an image of the mac drive and had reformatted my 3tb drive to Mac just so I can place the image there. I don't know if it would work or it will jus take too long because the progress bar is not moving at all.

  • More than 1 internal hdds?

Is it possible to have 2 internal HDDs installed in a macbook?

Well well well... MCE is the Optical Drive-Hard Drive conversion place to go. I think the price is crazy though. I would go with an external fast RAID box if you intend to do Video or with a smaller unit. I swapped out my drive for a larger one and then installed the old one into a 2.5" harddrive enclosure with my old Pismo. This might be an option.
MCE used to make hard drive units for the Wallstreet,Lombard and Pismo. These would fit into the expansion slots (pop out the optical drive and pop in the harddrive). For these power books the swap-in swap-put approach works for me. For the MacBook... you are stuck if you ever need an optical drive while you are on the go. I think it is a good idea though for a small group of folks who need the extra internal hard drive capacity. I use my iPod when I need extra drive space.

  • GF615M-P33 - Only beep codes, no screen

Just a built a new computer with the following specs...
    Motherboard: MSI GF615M-P33
CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 425 Rana
    RAM: Crucial 2GB DDR3 1333, Model: RM25664BA1339 - 1 stick
HDD: Western Digital 500 GB Caviar - WD5000AAKS
PSU: Antec 500 Watt Smartpower 2.0
No graphics or sound cards b/c I wanted to use the onboard chips until I could afford them.
I plugged everything up and made sure all connections were seated before powering on the system for the 1st time.
When I powered it up there was 2 beeps and no screen, monitor insisted it wasn't getting a signal.
Powered down and double checked the connections, everything was connected nice & tight.
I fired it up again, this time with the case open and heard:
1 set of 3 low volume but short fast chirps
    pause
1 set of 3 low volume but short fast chirps
    pause
    louder single longer beep
    pause
    another single longer beep
I never see anything on the screen except lots flickering
I powered the computer down and booted back up with the RAM stick removed and heard 3 single beeps with a pause in between each.
Powered back down and removed CMOS battery for 30 sec, powered back up, no screen and same results as the 2nd time I fired it up.
Anybody have any clues what I should try next? Or am I facing bad RAM or motherboard? Or do I just need to purchase a 2nd RAM stick?

I took the motherboard, CPU, and ram assembly back to the shop where I purchased these items. All 3 tested ok on a bench test.

         •    With only the CPU and heat sink, memory, and video card (or onboard video) connected to the motherboard, place the motherboard on a non-conductive surface and retest the motherboard
         •    Check the case mounting standoffs to verify that they are lining up correctly with the mounting holes on the motherboard.
This case is from a Compaq Presario SR1210NX - The standoffs in this case are made to it. The manufacturer of the case took a sheet metal plate and pressed it to form the standoffs then it was drilled and tapped. This plate is riveted to the case but does not touch the outer wall. I wanted to reuse this case because it is fairly nice and is easy to work on.
I tried the motherboard inside the case again, but this time left the screws a little loose so can shift the motherboard a tiny dab at the bottom. Left the case laying on its side, still no go.
Cleared CMOS by moving the little jumper according to the instructions and tried again on a non-conductive surface, same thing.
I looked at the label on the power supply, manufactured in 2004, so its 6 years old and this would have been the 4th computer it was installed in.

Doesn't sound wrong, but check it is seated correctly, in the slot closest to the processor.
The instructions and motherboard labeling show slot #1 (DIMM 1) to be the one furthest from the processor. Is this a misprint?
I did try it again with the RAM in the other slot, same results.
Is it possible that I'm looking at a dead power supply instead? Which doesn't make much sense because both the CPU fan and case fan spin up indicating that they are receiving power. Also the power switch lights up but the harddrive light never comes on. The harddrive is ok because I tested in my external harddrive enclosure and hooked it up to the computer I'm using right now via USB.

  • Oxford 922 chipset compatible w / FCStudio?

This follows a query about the Wiebetech SataDock.

My concern is the bridge chipset. The ToughTech XE uses the Oxford 922 (with latest firmware).
I've placed a call with Wiebetech and am awaiting an answer. Have not gotten clarity through other on-line searches and am hoping someone here might have a definitive answer.
I understand that FCStudio works with the Oxford 911 chipset, but came across an answer by Mr. Harbsmeier in this post mentioning the 922...

Intention is to install an Expresscard/34 in a 17" Macbook Pro with an external harddrive enclosure for portability.
Additional searching has me understanding there are no pcmcia cards for MBPro, thus only being able to use the Expresscard/34 (eSATA) in order to have DRS11 on FW bus while capturing to an external drive.
    Thanks,
    Kevan

    Kevan,
To my vastly limited knowledge, I believe the Oxford 922 chipset is for Firewire 800 while the 911 chipset is for Firewire 400.
In older versions of FCP, there were issues with external FW drives that didn't have the Oxford 911 chipset. I don't know that this is still an issue with later versions of FCP.

  • External boot for 2005 iMac PPC

I want to boot a 2004 17" PPC iMac from an external drive.  The external drive is configured to v10.4.11.
Computer recognizes the external drive & I can alter Preferences to point to the external drive when I've booted from the internal drive.
But then it boots (after quite a wait with just a blank grey screen) from the internal drive, ignoring the external drive.
    What am I missing?

Not all firewire disk enclosures support booting.  It depends on the chipset.  It's kind of a hit or miss thing. You need to buy a firewire enclosure that claims to support mac booting.
It would be helpful to know the make & model number of the harddrive enclosure.  You may want to report what your system profiler says about the external hd. Details on what Disk Utility says about how the drive is formated.
Did you try a different firewire port? ( a low possiblity. )
Here is my standard write up on external hds.
You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
    Has everything interface:
    FireWire 800/400 + USB2, + eSATA 'Quad Interface'

newegg doesnt seem to have any external enclosures with firewire for Sata. though there might be a 3.5 sized case that has usb & firewire with a sata interface, youll just need to find a sata adapter (from 2.5 sata to 3.5 sata adapater) if you wnat to also use larger drives
    hope that helps somewhat =)
    edit:
actually come to think of it i dont think you need any sort of Sata adapter so if you wanted a 3.5 harddrive enclosure to use your notebook drive & a larger drive i think you should be able to do that without a problem.

  • Moving Arch to drive with Windows.

    Hey there,
So I had installed Arch several months ago on my laptop. Because I didnt want to screw anything up, I swapped out the laptop hard drive with a spare one and installed Arch on there. However, now i would like to move Arch back into my original laptop HDD so i dont have to keep swapping things out when i need to use winblows. My windows partition is already shrunk  down and I have enough unallocated space on the drive for my Arch installation. So is all I have to do now clone the partitions from the external drive to the internal drive? Would i also need to boot into a live cd regenerate the fstab?

iurnait wrote:So is all I have to do now clone the partitions from the external drive to the internal drive?
There are some limitations to this:
If you have a MBR partition table, you can only have 4 primary partitions on a drive.
The space on your internal drive must be sufficient for all the partitions.
You still have to install a bootloader on the internal drive and configure it to boot arch and windows.
Apart from that i suggest you not to clone the partitions, but the filesystems .
iurnait wrote:Would i also need to boot into a live cd regenerate the fstab?
You definitely need to regenerate the fstab, but not necessarily from a live cd.
Can you find a way to acess both harddrives at once from your laptop, for example with an usb harddrive enclosure?

  • HT1752 my imac g3 wont start

hi, i have an old imac g3 and it wont boot up. every time i start it, the power button lights up and the little jingle plays but it then goes to a grey screen with a little folder in the middle blinking from a question mark to the finder guy. whats wrong?

    >but it just stay stuck with a question mark inside a folder
The blinking question mark means that the firmware could not find a valid OS on your startup disk. The likeliest possibilities are your OS has become corrupted or the harddrive has failed.
If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.

Another way to recover any data on the harddrive, you can try removing the harddrive from your system and placing the harddrive in an external harddrive enclosure.  You may be able to read the data on a second computer.
For slot loading machines... Try holding down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
    Try re-installing the os.
Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime. Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

  • G4 PCI (with faulty firewire) file transfer to new iMac

I just purchased a new 20" iMac and anxiously awaited the time when I would be transferring all of my files from my old G4 to the iMac. Turns out that the G4 firewire ports apparently are not working. I even bought a PCI/firewire card but it didn't work either, so it must be a problem on the motherboard. • Need help migrating from damaged MacBook Pro to New MacBook Pro.

My Mid-2008 MacBook Pro's logic board died and I have just purchased a 2012 Refurb MacBook Pro to replace the old laptop. I do have a backup on Time Machine but the most recent backup is about a week old. I would like to be able to do the migration using the disk in the old laptop, but it will not completely boot up and will arrive at the "forced shutdown" screen soon after it boots. Can I still connect to the old laptop using migration assistant even though I am at the forced shutdown screen? Old computer is running OSX Lion. I think the new one will have either Mountain Lion or possibly Mavericks on it. I've used Migration Assistant previously, so I am familiar with how it works. I'm just not sure if it will work in this instance with the old computer.

It looks like it did change. (We're talking about 5 years ago and at least 3 operating systems ago), but I do remember that the instructions for Migration Assistant back then said that on the old computer where you just needed to access the drive, you had to hold down a key or keys when after hitting the power key. This will allow access by the new computer to the harddrive in the old computer without the need to boot up, basically making the old computer an oversized harddrive enclosure.
It worked perfectly when I did it with my old iBook which would not even get to the gray Apple logo, but the MacBook was able to fully access the drive, allowing me to migrate the apps, fonts and work files stored on it, including my entire iTunes library.
like I said earlier, if this is no longer the case, than removing the drive from the old computer and inserting it in an external drive is the next best way to go. Of course, having a fairly recent backup on Time Machine should also work.

  • NMH300 - what's the usb for?

    Hi
I'm considering buying NMH300 so my question is- USB port - what is it for
I mean can i connect my laptop to that port so i could copy files directly form NMH to my laptop or can i connect my TV through USB so i could play movies directly from my TV without streaming. That's how i do it right now. I play movies form my pen drive  or HDD connected to my TV's USB port.

Nope, you can't connect your PC directly to the USB port on the mediahub. The USB port on the mediahub will only work with flashdrives and some portable USB harddrive enclosures.
