Harddrive failure and lost authorizations

After 5.5 years, my original Mac harddrive failed in my G4. I have a new drive and I am well on the way with software restorals, however, there are some lost programs and program data that someone may be able to answer rather than fumbling in the dark...
1) I purchased about $20 worth of Itunes in the last 2 weeks. Is it possible to reload the songs from the Itunes store? Lucky I didn't buy any more!
2) I had purchased Quicktime pro 6 back in '03 and I have the authorization key numbers, but I have no installation disk. How should I proceed?
thanks a lot
-John

1. You probably can't without purchasing the music again, but some people have been able to; use one of the links on this page to contact the iTunes music store customer service.
2. Click here if you are using Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.39, or here for Mac OS 9 systems; in either case, you can enter your old key the same way you originally entered it after installing the software. If you are using Mac OS X 10.4, you need to purchase a new key.

I had a drive failure and lost the iWeb file along with other things.
I did manage to save a lot of user file documents but I don't see or
recognize the iWeb site file. It was on a 15" G4 Titanium pb.
I'm trying to find a way, using version 2.0.4 of iWeb on a different
pb to recover the file into the iWeb app or a way to download the site into iWeb.
There are 6 pages of images and text, and it
would be a task for me to recreate the whole thing again. I did
download the site but I don't know how or if I can get iWeb to see it and open it.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this? The link to my site:

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Unfortunately iWeb cannot read or import previously published files, only generate them.  You'll have to recreate your site from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site.

  • JBOD disk failure and lost items

    Dear.
We have a JBOD solution with 4 copies. Each copy is on a non-redundant disk.
For SMTP, the transport database has a shadow transport database and shadow safetynet on another server, which makes sure that a message isn’t lost in the event of a database crash at the moment that the SMTP message is being written to the database.
Is there some protection mechanism for MAPI or when an Outlook client is writing a contact or a meeting appointment a few seconds before the crash? I suppose that the appointment has been lost
because it’s not yet replicated to the copy databases?
Or, is there some end-to-end mechanism that returns the Outlook client that the appointment has been saved only when it’s already replicated to a copy database?
    Thanks for the feedback.
    Regards.

I found the following about the Block Mode replication:
"In block mode, as transactions are written into the ESE log buffer (the 1 MB cache used to accumulate transactions to be written into a transaction log), the log copier copies the data asynchronously (effectively in
parallel) to all the servers that hold a database copy. The data are written into a similar log buffer on these servers.
When the log buffer on the receiving servers is full, the complete buffer is written out as a transaction log. The new log is inspected to ensure that it is not corrupt, and if this check passes, the log is inserted into the
log stream to be replayed into the passive database."
So, can we decide that, in block mode, each change on the active database comes into the log buffer (in memory) and directly copied to the log buffer on the copy servers? The log copier copies the data from the source buffer directly to the receive buffer,
in real time. When the receive buffer reaches a 1 MB size, it writes a transaction log file that will be inspected and processed. This means that we potentially can lose data of a few milliseconds only?

  • Power failure and lost Pages file

Power on my laptop suddenly went off and I had not saved a copy of a new Pages file I was working on. It does not appear in recent files or anywhere when I restarted and opened Pages. Are temp files stored anywhere that I might look to recover the work I've done?

    Mark,
    No, unfortunately.
You can set Pages to save a copy of any +previous version+ in your Preferences, however this wouldn't help in this case.

Best is to use cmd S regularly as you work, then you choose at what point it is saved.

  • Music Files Deleted After Hard Disk Failure and First Sync After Hard Disk

    Hi,
I recently had a hard disk failure and lost all of the data on my hard drive. I replaced the hard drive and reinstalled all of the software including iTunes. I am running Windows XP Home. The first time I plugged my iPod Nano into my computer after the hard drive replacement it synced to iTunes and since iTunes had no music files it deleted all of the music files on my Nano. How do I get them back and why on earth would iTunes do such a stupid thing??? My Nano contained many songs that I bought from iTunes and I want to get them back. I have found some third party software that will undelete the deleted files but it costs $69. I don't feel that I should have to pay to correct a defective feature in iTunes. Does Apple have an undelete utility? Can I redownload the songs that I purchased from iTunes?

*The first time I plugged my iPod Nano into my computer after the hard drive replacement it synced to iTunes*
When you connected did you get a message that your iPod was linked to another library, and then press Erase and Sync? When an iPod is set to update automatically and you connect to a computer with an empty iTunes and accept the message above it will erase the originals completely (as you have discovered). Also as you've seen, none of the recovery programs are particularly cheap so you have to decide if in your particular circumstances it's worth it to get your songs back. It may be if you have a lot of purchased tracks which you will have to pay to download again. If they came primarily from your CDs then it's most likely not as you can re-rip them.
*Can I redownload the songs that I purchased from iTunes?*
If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • I had to reinstall a harddrive in a PowerBook G4 and lost all my apps, where can I get a new Apple Works?

I had to reinstall a failed harddrive in a PowerBook G4 and lost all my apps.  Where can I get Apple Works?

    Allan:
It did not work on my SL Mac Mini and I am sure you will have the same results.
I need to find a quick and easy download PPC application for someone on this forum who is having problems in Snow Leopard and I want to rule out that it is PPC that is the problem.  I had suggested he download Appleworks for this purpose; ooooops!
Can you think of a quick and dirty PPC app to download?
    Yes, he has Rosetta installed...
I am almost positive that the problem is that his game was released in 2003 when OS X was 10.2.x and it just will NOT function in Snow Leopard without some patch or upgrade.
I am getting my hands on a copy of this game tomorrow, so I will go down that path for him, too!

I've gotten a 'SIM card failure' message and lost service 4 times in the past half a day. Turning the phone off and on fixes it temporarily. Any similar problems? What did you do?

this is definitely not the experience we want you to have with your phone wme1221. I recommend a SIM card pull. What type of phone do you have? Is the phone damaged?

If your hard drive was not backed up then you can download items purchased from the iTunes Store.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Did you subscribe to iTunes Match service?  If you did, your other music would be available too.
Note, this restores the music files themselves, not playlists, playcount, ratings, or other things associated with the actual library file structure.
You really should consider getting a backup drive. Hard drives failures are a certainty and it saves a lot of grief.

  • 24" iMac harddrive failures abounding!!!!!!

Every one of our 24" iMac harddrives have failed over the past year.
    Let me explain......
We have 20 - 24" iMacs, 18 - 20" iMacs. All purchaced in bulk in 2007 and 2008. We are basially a Mac shop that comprises of 30% Macs, the rest PC.
The first hardrive failure was in November of 2009. From that point till now we have had to replace 12 drives, all on the 24" iMacs. As a precation, we are replacing drives in two more iMacs that are out of warranty. Leaving 4 iMacs that are still under warranty.
Given the extent of the failures we are experiencing and regardless of any warranty, Apple should be replacing the drives for us. They won't because the one year warranty expired on many of these a few months ago.
Let me point out, that none of the 20" iMacs have had harddrive failures.
It is hardly a coincidence. This points to bad design and a failure for Apple to control quality. If someone from Apple wants to contact me about this, please do so through this post.

Yeah, I had to do a few HDD and even logic board replacements on Mid-2007 24" iMacs once upon a time. Strangely enough, people here didn't want to believe me.
It was at a university where they had two labs full of 20" models, and only a handful of 24" models, but only the 24" ones had a problem. Just be sure you catch it quick, because they will roast your logic board if you don't.
This is also why you should try to stagger your purchasing. Replace a few systems every month, so if there's a bad run of systems, you won't have a bunch of systems down at the same time.

  • 2.2.1 and lost applications... I have a question...

I have the EXACT same problem as many people posting here. Updated to 2.2.1, sync'd and mysteriously lost at least 2/3 of my applications. Totally unforgivable problem on Apples part.
In addition, iTunes now crashes during the sync.
My question is this... when we do a sync, we often wait quite a while during the "Backing up the iPhone" phase... is there a way to actually USE that backup to get my applications and settings?
    Matt... very, very, very frustrated.

You can download your apps again for free: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
As for the crashing of itunes: Start iTunes, don't connect your iphone. Go to the Store menue in iTunes and click on "Deauthorize" and then "Authorize" your computer again. Connect your iphone again. Try to sync.

  • IPhone 4s and Sim failure and No service issue

    Ok,
Few days back I asekd questions regarding few other issues with iPhone 4s. here is it, https://discussions.apple.com/message/17068754#17068754
Few gentlemen told me, to replace sim card. Here is what I did,
    1) I am from India. I was using Vodafone 3g micro sim. Everyday, 4-5 times in the ideal mode I got messages like Sim failure and invalid sim. I have to restart my iPhone everytime. Then only it was working.
    2) I posted the question, people said its my card problem
    3) I bought new BSNL 3G micro sim card for iPhone. I inserted the card and got 3G working.
    4) After 3 hours, I saw No service message. I waited for some time, i went to outside to see if it was a network issue. Nothing changed.
    5) I rebooted my iPhone, it immediaetly picked the network.
    6) After few hours, again it lost and said no service.
    7) I then didn't rebooted it.
    8) In the morning,  I saw Sim Failure and invalid sim message. Useless
    9) I now rebooted and Sim is working with 3G network.
    Now please ,
is this iPhone issue? It is for sure. I am tired now. Battery is dying and with this Sim Failure and No service, I am totally disappointed.

    Hi Ahelpyguy...
I read all your messages above , I am facing the same problem as u faced.
My Iphone 4S and it was working fine (5.0) until i upgrade to 5.0.1(9A406).
Now I am facing alot of network issues.  I get messages liek NO Sim , SIM FAILURE.
I even restored the sowftware from ITUNES but i am still facing the same problem.
I was using Vodafone first but I heard that due to problem in micro sim reader of Iphone 4s i shd use a 128 K or 64 K sim.. Since only Airtel provided 64K sim ...I installed that in my phone. But still i am facing the same issue.
I would appreciate if you can tell me whats Tweaked version of 5.0.1.
the current software installed on my phone is 5.0.1 (9A406).
    Thanks
    Prateek

  • Computer got virus and lost everything

My dell got a major virus and crashed and lost everything, got new dell inspiron and downloaded Itunes will read i pod but wonr sync music do i have to reset ipod?

You can only deauthorize computers you still have physical access to.  If you have reached the limit of 5 authorizations and need to authorize yet another machine you can always use the deauthorize all option described in this Apple support document.  This procedure can only be performed once a year.
iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization
As for your other problem, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

so if I want to have a 5 stars song I have to rate in the Mac to keep in the iphone.... but I want to change it I have to do it again in my itunes in my mac

    thanks in advance
Im kinda newbie on this thing
    I have a MacBook Pro
    Itunes 11.0.5.
    iphone 4s
    IOS 6.1.3

    JoeleMoore,
You just need to re-authorize your computer to play those purchases, then they will be able to sync to your iPhone.
    1. Open iTunes.
    2. From the Store menu (at the top of the iTunes window), choose Deauthorize Computer.
    3. Enter your Apple ID and password and click Deauthorize.
    4. From the Store menu (at the top of the iTunes window), choose Authorize Computer.
    5. Enter your Apple ID and password and click Authorize.
    6. Repeat these steps for each Apple ID you use.
    Hope this helps,
    Jennifer B.

  • Harddrive failures? Maybe not

Since the start of this year I've had a few, seeming, internal harddrive failures in my machine. It's a long story, but the details are important. You can scan my post history of the issues here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1920757&tstart=0
Bottom line is that, before this latest incident, I went for over a month without any problems. On Sunday my machine froze and I couldn't restart from the internal. I booted from a LaCie firewire and tried to repair the drive with both DW and DU. Like the three previous times, implications were that my internal was toast. I couldn't erase or re-partition without:
    - input/output error
    or
    - Disk could not be unmounted
On a whim last night, I pulled the internal (WD Caviar 320GB) and swapped it into one of my LaCie enclosures. It partitioned fine, so I took it another step and zeroed all data. That took about 4 - 5 hours, but it worked. I reinstalled Leopard, ran all updates and it worked fine. Note that on all previous failures this year, I never had problems booting off of my Firewire "Emergency" drive, just internals. Also, whenever I ran Techtool Pro 4 after each failure, every test came back "passed".
After searching the boards I thought that the issue could be related to the power supply, except if that were the case, wouldn't there be problems when booted from an external? FYI - My machine was one covered by an extended warranty because of defective power supplies and it was replaced by Apple. Possible thermal issues or a failing disk controller? I could just get another enclosure and not use the internal bus, but would like to understand the root of this problem. Sorry for the length of this post, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your response. I'm not actually using a UPS, just surge protectors and all peripherals are plugged into one. Good thought about the temp sensor. It had occurred to me with the second replacement drive and I made sure that it hadn't come loose on the board end of the cable. Vents have been cleaned out (and on a fairly regular basis...I'm a neat freak).
I appreciate other sets of eyes - making sure I'm not overlooking the obvious. When the original WD 80GB began acting up, I figured, no big deal, drives get old and fail. The second drive failure I blamed myself for being cheap and buying a refurbed WD 80GB. The third drive was a brand new WD 320GB and I was baffled because the symptoms were the same; an unexpected freeze, on restart it wouldn't boot; DW couldn't repair; DU couldn't reformat or repartition. I chalked it up to a defective drive and WD sent me a new one. But the replacement WD drive too?!
Here are the exact events leading up to this recent hd fu. Was editing a photo in Photoshop (two programs were opened, Firefox and Photoshop). I stopped to eat dinner and left the programs opened. Went back after dinner and the computer was frozen so I used the power button to shutdown, then restarted. I felt like I was in the movie Ground Hog Day! *Note that it's been almost a full day booting off of the drive since putting it in an enclosure, etc. External drives have their own power supply, so could this point to a failing iMac power supply (because it powers the internal bus)? I just can't imagine any crash trashing the Volume Header, catalogue, etc. so badly that I can't reformat.
