Harddrive gone!!!! please help

so last night i went to bed, plugged my computer in, shut it down, but didn't fully close the screen. this morning when i opened it, the screen was at the login stage, and then it blinked once and shut down. So i started it back up, and boom, like the first time i had used it. only, every application i've downloaded still exists, just in the form it exists before i first open it. i.e.-i get the whole "Welcome" message for every program. all my pictures are gone, all my songs are gone, but the programs like limewire, quicken, and other apps that i downloaded still exist. my dashboard was all custom, it is now back to its original stage, with a little clock, calander, and the time in boston? ***??? i realize its probably because i left the screen open, but why? i don't understand. I've had my logic board replaced, and its run perfectly for the past 3 months.
thanks for any help.
-Ben

looks like i answered my own question. called apple, and they connected me to a specialist right away. seems my computer overheated and automaticly backed up my files to a single folder. The guy walked me through it, and it was a simple drag and drop, log out and log in, and bam, alllllll back to normal! thanks apple.

Sounds like either the Display or Graphics chip, that will not be cheap to fix. Because it is a 2006 and getting on in years, it might be best to move whatever you want to keep over to your newer iMac using Firewire Target Disk Mode and let it rest in peace.

Hi, my iphoto had a transparent ? mark on it and wouldn't open so I dragged it onto the desk top and now it has disappeared... I cannot find it anywhere in my finder, it seems to be gone, please help!

You have one and possibly two problems.
First problem you tried to open the iPhoto library with iTunes and appeared to have set iTunes as the default app for iPhoto Libraries. That isn;t going to work.
To fix that select the iPhoto library in the Finder and do a File->Get Info. In the middle of the Info window you'll see Open With dropbox. Click on that and select iPhoto, then select the Change All button
This will get iPhoto back as the default app to open iPhoto Libraries.
Double click the library now and if nothing else is wrong iPhoto will open the library. If it does do as Michael wrote and go to the Applications folder and drag iPhoto to the dock to remake the shortcut.
However since you started this thread by saying that the iPhoto shortcut in the dock had a question mark on it it is possible that iPhoto is missing from your Applications folder. If it is post back.

  • My music information- GONE  please help!

I am trying to move itunes 10 from old pc to new pc. All my music is on an external HD. I had my music library of over 500 cd's all organized by artist in folders on the external hd. Now, the new itunes install on the new pc has re-organized my external hd and all the folders are gone! Please help me get them back. How can itunes change my own external HD?? It has put all the songs together under a folder called 'unknown atrist'. The title of the song is still there but all my folders are gone!

Maybe turingtest2 (a regular AD poster) can help with his script, TagFromFilename.
Just try one or two files to make sure it works how you want, before you run it on the whole shebang. I think it will help, but I'm not sure.

Good luck. You're going to need it!

Have you looked in Macintosh HD/Applications whilst in Finder or gone to spotlight and done a search. To use spotlight either goto the little magnifying glass in the top right of your screen and type in Photo Booth and hit enter or hit  (Command) + Spacebar and then type in Photo booth and hit enter. Please note you have to put in the space between Photo & Booth.
If it still happens to be on your Mac, Open it, and once its in the dock (ctrl + click) and select (Keep in Dock)

  • Conected ipod to pc all songs gone please help

    **Hi ALL,**
**Need help please, my hard drive died on the computer so i replaced it went to sign in on the itunes store and went to sync and all of my songs, photos, games have gone from my ipod is there any way i can get them all back????**
**Please help, thaks for youre time**
    *Fletch*

Sounds as if you synced your iPod to an empty iTunes library.
If you have no back up anyplace else, then your only hope is some data recovery software as mentioned in this post.

Some people say that they've been allowed a re-download of iTunes purchases for various reasons when they've contacted Apple.
You can only ask but please be aware that Apple are not obligated to do this for you.

  • Got a new lap top my husband wanted to help me by downloading itunes on it I have not used icloud but do have it on my phone When he pugged it in it asked if he wanted to backup he said yes Then reset my phone now all my pictures are gone please help

I got a new lap top and my husband thought it would be a good idea to help me by downloading itunes on it. Well Not so much...   I have not used icloud but do have it on my phone and other items. When he pugged my phone in to my laptop it asked if he wanted to backup he said yes. Then it reset my phone and now all my pictures are gone please help

If your phone was backed up to your computer, the backup would contain your camera roll photos (and videos).  Restoring to this backup would recover them.  However, if it was backed up a second time after losing them, this would overwrite the backup containing the data and your photos would be lost.
You can try restoring to your backup, but before doing so go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".  This will prevent the phone from automatically syncing and backing up when you connect it to your computer, thereby overwriting the backup you want to restore to.  After doing this, open iTunes on your computer and connect your phone, then right-click on the name of your phone on the left side of iTunes and choose Restore from Backup.  (If you have iTunes 11 first go to View>Show Sidebar.)
Again this might work, as long as the phone was only backed up and then not subsequently backed up again after the photos were lost.

  • My ipod says it was et up with another itunes library, it wasn't, and when I add songs to my library when I go back into it they are all gone, please help im going in circles

Please help, I am constanly re importing songs, I have to re sync my ipod to my library each time i plug it in, and I am unable to import songs from my media player, any ideas?

When I plug it in I get the **'s ipod is already synced with another itunes library so do I want to erase & sync message
Even though it is the same music in iTunes, iTunes does not see it as the exact same library because you had to re-add all the songs to it.
You will need to erase and sync and you iPod will simply end up as it is now.
It's like of your house burns down and you rebuild it exactly the same, it is still not the "same" house it was.

Will it work with apple energy conservation software & it’s motion detection software?  Is there another hard drive that I should be looking at aside from the one list? Please Help.

  • My Mail is gone - Please help

I upgraded to tiger last night. And then Updated to 10.4.8 as well. Now when I launch my mail program I am missing a huge chunk of emails. i did a basic install. Also in the folders that I created there are also no emails.
what went wrong? I made the mistake to not backup my user folder before I installed tiger. But why would it remember some data, like folder names, and account names but not retreive ALL my emails.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated...there are SOO many business contacts on here that I can not lose.
    please help
    jack
ps I went into user>library>mail>mailboxes. to find the emails within the folders. Some luck but again, some are there some are not. Why would it keep some but delete others. Does it have to do with the fact that they were read or not. Because I put emails in folders to be read later.

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
In particular, you may want to take a look at the following article (also referenced in that thread) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON'T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problems. A similar procedure can be applied to other mailboxes, either within the account folder or within ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn't need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-XXXXXX folder to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn't work as expected. If you've been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account's Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that's not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that's on the Desktop. Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move to the account's Inbox the messages that Mail failed to convert properly, and delete those that did get through and, hence, are duplicates now.
The following collection of AppleScripts has a Remove Duplicates script that can be useful for removing duplicate messages:
    http://homepage.mac.com/aamann/Mail_Scripts.html
If all is well and you're not missing anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • 7000 Photos Gone, PLEASE HELP!!

I opened iPhoto 08 and instead of 8000 photos, i now have 1000!!! I have no recollection of moving anything into the trash, but i did empty it when i woke up this morning..UGH this is the worst. I WAS JUST about to buy a external, unfreakingreal. PLEASE someone tell me there is a way to get them back, please!
The wierd thing is iPhoto has been freezing my laptop alot lately, and even tho those photos are gone, my diskspace remains the same, how it that possible, please someone help me get those pictures back, they were my life for the past 4 years....please.

Ever wish for a corrupted database?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Suddenly, the audio was gone - please help

My audio is gone, just happened... settings are on, everything is on. This means I don't hear my phone ring, notifications from text, email, whatsapp or alarm. Sometimes, I can't hear the person at the other end of my phone, so outgoing calls are hit and miss...
I have checked everything, but no luck. Is there a secret MUTE button somewhere I have missed? Need I say - colossal inconvenience.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness shows up, the first thing to try is a proper reboot:
Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
BB10 Devices. Hold the top button down until the counter reaches zero. Wait for the device to be fully shut down (e.g., nothing at all displayed on the screen, no LED lights, etc.). Hold the top button until the red LED is lit. Wait through the full boot-up process. If this fails, you can attempt the battery-pull method above, but it is normally NOT recommended unless nothing else works.
See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    Good luck!

  • ALL pictures in iPhoto *and* PhotoBooth are gone :(  please help

    Hello,
I have a bit of a dilema here. On 6-27-07 (actually 6-28 cause it was after midnight), my daughter and I were taking pictures in photobooth. I selected the iPhoto icon from the PhotoBooth picture to send a copy of those pictures to iPhoto.
PhotoBooth froze up after doing several of them and wouldn't work. I am trying to remember from memory (which is swiss cheese from the MS), but I think I had to do a hard shut down. When I tried to go to iPhoto, it acted like it was my 1st time using it and it began asking me questions as if I was setting it up for the 1st time. ALL pictures are GONE. Everything in iPhoto and PhotoBooth are GONE I don't know what I did or how (if I can) to fix it.
Can anyone possibly help me? Lots of precious memories gone. I was recently going to read how to do a back-up right before this happened. Now I wish I hadn't gone to sleep that night until I learned how to do it and actually did make a back-up
My husband called Apple and they told him to do something and now that has created approximately 3 copies of random pics and not all of them, or I would just delete the extras. My husband may have done something wrong to have it make extra copies of the pictures it has now, I don't know.
My husband didn't seem like he was happy with the help that he was getting at the time. So, I found my way here again!!! I have been to the discussions boards once before, but I forgot how to get here (serious swiss cheese memory from MS). I have to save ALL websites that I like to my favorites or I should say 'Bookmarks' or I will probably never find it again. <embarassed>
**I will tell you a little about me and the use of my mac....... I have Multiple Sclerosis so my husband purchased the lap top to make it easier for me to get online and not be stuck to one chair which makes me hurt bad. I am new to Mac and have always used a PC.
Anyway, when we purchased it we explained that I would mainly be using it for Internet use and for the pictures that I take (I am disabled, so that is about all I can do but I thoroughly enjoy it), which happens to be more than the average person since I have a new Grandson
Any help that anyone can give me, I would TRULY APPRECIATE!!!!!!
    Thanks,
    New2Him

    Brenda,
    You're quite welcome.
That does sound like your original library. It makes sense to me; your husband was probably told to drag it to the Desktop by the Apple help desk person. Look inside your Pictures folder for the other two iPhoto Library folders. If you don't find them there, do another Finder Search. Click once on a found item in the Search window to see its path at the bottom of that window. That should help you locate those folders.
After you find and rename or delete the other libraries, you will be ready to create a new library. (You might not want to delete those other folders yet - in case some photos are missing from your main library. But if you are sure that nothing in them is original, go ahead and Trash them to free up the space.)
To create a new library, Option-launch iPhoto and click "Create Library." By default it will be located in your Pictures folder and named "iPhoto Library." You can change the name if you want - say, "iPhoto Library New" before you click "Save." A new, empty library will open. Drag the right corner of the window up so that it fills only about half of your screen. Do iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced and make sure that there IS a check in the boxes beside "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to library" and "Add ColorSync Profile".
On the other half of your screen, open a Finder window. Set it to column view and navigate this path: Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Originals/ 2007/ (Film Roll folders). It is these Film Roll folders that contain your photos. Select all of the Roll folders and drag them as a group over the iPhoto window until the cursor shows you a green plus symbol. Drop them in the main viewing area of the iPhoto window. iPhoto will indicate to you that it is importing. A film roll will be created for each folder that you dragged. [Tip: if you want an Album to represent each film roll, then drag them to the Source Pane (left column) instead of the main viewing window. This will create an Album and a film roll, both with the same name as the imported folder.]
I have read that the film roll date can be wrong after importing, so you may want to check the dates as you go. Open the Info Pane in the lower left corner of the iPhoto window (click the little i). When you select a Roll, its info will display in the Info Pane. You can edit the Roll's title and date, if you wish.
When the 2007 rolls have all been imported, switch to the Originals/ 2006 folder, select the roll folders, and drag to your iPhoto window. Repeat for each year in your Desktop library.
This will recover your Original, unedited photos in the same film rolls as before. What cannot be saved is your Albums, Slideshows, Books, titles, keywords, ratings, and other metadata. These were contained in the database file that was damaged during the iPhoto hang or subsequent hard shut down.
If you had spent significant time editing your photos, then you may want to have a look in Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Modified to see if you wish to save any of the edited versions. There is no way to reconnect the edits with their Originals; that info was also stored in the database file. But if you want to import them to your library you may. Be aware that this will cause the appearance of duplication, much like you had in the library your husband created. If you can part with your edited versions, then it is much easier to discard them. (If not, be selective.)
I'll look forward to hearing your progress. Regards,
    Shelly

  • All my sent items and inbox gone please help.

I have an iphone 5 and my entire email inbox and sent items are gone!!! I have it set to never delete but they are gone....
    Please Help

What probably happened:  You clicked an old iPhoto library in your Pictures folder.  This caused two things to happen:
Since the library was old, it needed upgrading and iPhoto upgraded the library
The upgraded library is now your current library, until you select a different library.
Try this (assuming you are using iPhoto '11):
If iPhoto is running, use the command "File > Switch to Library" from the File menu.
Select your previous iPhoto library from the library Chooser panel to switch back to that library.
If iPhoto is not open, hold down the alt/option key while launching iPhoto to show the Library Chooser panel.
