Harddrive issues when running disk permissions

I need some additional help. It seems like I screwed around with the terminal, or in fact downloaded some patch that I shouldn't have to get some free software and it jacked up my whole computer. Basically I can't delete some adobe bridge files and adobe device files. But I ran disk Utility and this is what I got:
Verifying volume “harddrive”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid node structure
The volume harddrive needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
What do I do? Please help.
Doobs

Boot from your install cd/dvd. Get past the language screen and go to Utilities in the Menu bar. Choose Disk Utilities>First Aid. Highlight your disk and hit the Repair Disk button. Invalid node structure is a fairly serious situation and you will probably need to run Diskwarrior to repair your disk.

My iMac, OS 10.7.5, is abnormally slow on start-up, taking many minutes for my password sign-in window to show up.  I've run Disk Permissions and have verified my hard drive and all is in order.  What do I do to start up my Mac in a normal manner?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Issue when running acutal Off-cycle payroll in India!

    Dear experts!
I have an urgent issue when running ACTUAL off-cycle payroll in India as below: "Payroll already performed once in future".
In testing mode, everything is fine. I have tried to check payroll result in pc_payresult and pu01, and Infotype 3. All of them show the last payroll in 31.07.2011. But now I run off-cycle payroll on 20.08.2011, this error is displayed. So I cannot run actual payroll for them.
Please help me! I am really appreciated.
    Regards!
    Woody.

    Hello
Normally this error message reflects an inconsistency in the payroll
directory cluster, that you can view via RPUDIR00. What you can do to
restore the consistency is to run the report RPUDIR00 for this pernr
with the following parameters on the selection screen:
    Payroll for country
    Personnel number
    Compare directory
    Payroll results structure
    detailed log
Save new directory             X          <  this will write the new directory.  If you want to test first, do not select this parameter.
Afterwards it should be possible to run payroll for this employee.
    Thanks and Kind Regards

I think I goofed when running disk utility, and unmounted at the end and restarted. Now I can't get the disk to mount. What am I missing?

Which disk won't mount? What version of OS X? Your post is impossible to answer with no useful information.

What does the message "Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired" when repairing disk permissions?

It's just a status message, albeit a misleading one, and can be ignored.

  • Warning after running disk permissions

After running disk permissions on my internal hard drive I get the following message:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Does any one know what this means?

This is one of the most common bugs being reported about Leopard, and has to do with the installation of the Remote Desktop Client software update through Software Update. There is no official fix for this, and repairing permissions in general seems to be quite problematic with Leopard.
If your system seems otherwise stable and free from major problems, it may be worth waiting for Apple to take care of this via another software update or some other remedy.

Perhaps, since you are under warranty, they may have a boot disk to attempt to run disk utility and see if the problem can be repaired before resorting to reformatting. Disk error may occur because of a number of issues (installed software, crashes, shutdowns, physical movement of the drive while disks spinning, etc.)
In addition you may want to boot in the single user mode to access the FSCK command as follows: The following is from the Apple support site
Mac OS X: How to Start up in Single-User or Verbose Mode
You may use a key combination when starting up the computer to enter single-user mode or verbose mode, either of which can be used for troubleshooting and in software development. This document applies to Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server versions 10.0 and later.
Steps to Enter Single-User or Verbose Mode
    1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
    2. Press the power button to start the computer.
    3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and one of the following:
the "s" key for single-user mode.
the "v" key for verbose mode.
    4. To exit single-user mode type: reboot
    5. Press Return.
You have successfully entered single-user or verbose mode when you see white text appear on the screen.
Then you may try to repair as follows using the FSCK
fsck is a command-line utility that may be able to verify and repair a disk. If you can successfully start up in Safe Mode or use Disk Utility while started up from a disc, you don't need to use fsck. However, here are some situations in which fsck may be necessary.
Your Mac OS X disc isn't available.
    Your optical drive isn't available.
You can't start with a Safe Boot.
Tip: If you use a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) formatted volume, such as with Mac OS X 10.3 or later, you probably won't need to use fsck. If you do use it for any reason, please be aware that benign error messages can appear.
If you're not sure how your volume is formatted and you can't start up from your Mac OS X volume to find out, type the following command in a command-line interface and then press Return: diskutil info /
If you see "File System: Journaled HFS+" returned, you have a Journaled volume.
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.
About live verification in Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later
In Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later, you can verify your Mac OS X volume while started from it. This is known as live verification, and can be used in three different ways.
Option 1: Verify your disk using Disk Utility while started from the startup disk. To find out how to do this, see this article. Please note that live verification does not involve any disk repair, so if verification finds something that should be repaired, start up from your Mac OS X Install disc and use Disk Utility as described above in "Try Disk Utility."
Option 2 (advanced): Use the command line and the command-line utility, diskutil.
Start up your computer and log in as an administrator.
    Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
At the prompt, type the following command and then press Return:
    diskutil verify /
Note: Don't use this method to check non-startup volumes.
You should see messages such as the following during the disk check:
Could not unmount disk for verification, attempting live verify
Started verify/repair on volume disk0s3 Macintosh HD
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.
    Mounting Disk
Verify/repair finished on volume disk0s3 Macintosh HD
Option 3 (advanced): Use the command line and the fsck_hfs -l command.
Start up your computer and log in as an administrator.
    Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities).
At the prompt, type the following command and then press Return to determine your filesytem ID:
    df -hl
Look for some lines of text that look like this:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
    /dev/disk0s3 37G 20G 17G 55% /
    /dev/disk0s5 37G 37G 641M 98% /Volumes/Storage
Make a note of the first "disk" name that appears after /dev/, such as "disk0s3." This is your filesystem ID for your startup volume.
At the prompt, type the following command and then press Return:
    df -hl
Then type the following command, where "disk0s3" is your filesystem ID you noted in step 4, then press Return:
    sudo fsck_hfs -l /dev/disk0s3
When prompted, enter your admin password, then press Return to begin the verification.
You should see messages like these during the disk check:
    ** /dev/rdisk0s3 (NO WRITE)
    ** Root file system
    ** Checking HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    ** Checking multi-linked files.
    ** Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    ** Checking Extended Attributes file.
    ** Checking volume bitmap.
    ** Checking volume information.
** The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.
    Additional Information
If you're interested in UNIX-style command-line syntax, here's a look at how a couple of flags used in our instruction can influence fsck:
The -y flag: Tells fsck that you want to answer "yes" to all questions about fixing, repairing, or salvaging information. This is the optimal approach, as answering "no" to any question causes fsck to stop. You cannot determine that all necessary repairs have been made until fsck completes and gives its final report.
The -f flag: Forces fsck to check "clean" filesystems when preening.

  • Warnings when running disk utility after downloads, etc.

I use Mc Janitor nightly to clear some of the 'stuff" that accumulates with files, etc. but run Disk Utility after downloads and such about once a month. I have done this since 2003 when I had my first e-mac. Only recently have "warnings " appear on the list of repair or varify disk...that says certain items can not be repaired. The techs at the Apple store said to just ignore them, which I have been doing. But the last download, which was a rather large new Security download, came up with something new, both on my computer and my husband's lap top when he downloaded it. These are letters that appear and say ACL found but not expected on Applications/Utilities, on "Applications" and on "Library."
We are just curious about what ACL is (or are) and what it means to have them in our systems.
It does say that the disk is verified when I run that. Everything seems to be working normally.

A few posts below yours is this one:

New Permissions messages after Security Update/more curious than concerned

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Anyone know what the ramifications of this is? What needs fixing and how?

When you run +Repair Disk Permissions+, it is fixing permissions as needed. The other messages are almost always just information - no action needed.

  • Windows Update Cleanup option is missing when running Disk Cleanup

I am running a domain controller on Window Server 2008 R2 and I am running low on C drive space. I have installed KB2852386 and I have Cleanmgr.exe and Cleanmgr.exe.mui in the system32 and system32\EN-us folders respectively. But when I log in as administrator
and run Disk Cleanup on the C drive, I do not get an option for Windows Update Cleanup. My winsxs folder is 16Gb and I would dearly like to recover some of that space.

Didn't think it would have been a WSUS server but just thought I'd check as that always complicates things...
I do need to clarify though, which version of Windows Server are you running? Your original post says 2008 R2, but your reply suggests it's just 2008 (mainly because 2008 R2 only has SP1).
If that's the case, you'll need to use the Compcln.exe tool. This removes archived files that are used in case you ever wanted to roll back an update, or even an entire service pack. Once the archived files are removed you can no longer remove SP2.
To use the tool, simply run compcln at a command prompt.
I honestly can't say how much space it will save. There are pages of discussions out there regarding WinSxS and why it takes up so much space. If you're still struggling after this you may have to look to hardware options...
I'll leave you with one last link to check out - just a blog explaining a bit more about WinSxS if you are interested.
What is the WINSXS directory in Windows 2008 and Windows Vista and why is it so large?
    Best of luck

  • Performance Issues when running 1.5.0_9 with servers

Hi. We have an application in Java. We run it using 1.5.0_9 on Win2003 and have no problems when running it on single Intel CPU PCs and Servers. However, whenever we are finding that some higher spec servers are running the application significantly slower... around 30%. It seems that it's either a problem with the Enterprise version of Win2k3 or perhaps with AMD Opteron CPUs.
Does anyone know of any known issues with Win2k3 Enterprise or AMD Opteron CPUs or simply any dual CPU technology?

I'm able to recreate the problem where a section of a screen goes black using with the following config.
    JDK 1.7.0_06
    2 graphics cards
    3 monitors
Create a New JavaFX Application Project (Hello World) in NetBeans 7.2. Once executed position the window so it spans two monitors, ensure the monitors are on seperate graphics cards and then hover the mouse of the Hello World button and one half of the window goes black. Positioning the window so it doesn't span a monitor draws the window correctly.
    Has anyone experienced this issue?
    Thanks.

  • Weird sound when running disk utilities

    hello everyone!
just got a new macbook pro yesterday
after i installed everything and set up everything, i decide to run disk utitlities to repair permission.
this isn't the first time i ran disk utilities but i realize that when i opened the program my computer made a sound like the one you would hear when you turn on the computer (a buzz kind of sounds like ejecting a cd from the drive). i had a powerbook for 3 years and ran disk utitlies plenty of times but this is the first time i heard this werid sound.
i've ran the program again but the sound disappeared, i don't if this is normal or something is wrong with my hardware.
does anyone have this same problem?

It probably was the superdrive. I have heard it too. No worrys.
