Harddrive issues

Long story short, OS failed to boot into windows with a message of BOOTMGR missing, recovery disc not working, ordered new recovery discs from HP.  To cover,  I ordered a new harddrive to replace it, Toshiba with same specs but a 1TB.
Ok installed harddrive and used recovery discs from HP but on restart still get error message of missing BOOTMGR.  Made a new recovery disc for windows 7 64bit off internet and burned to a bootable CD.  It boots up but found recovery doesn't list a OS system on hardrive.   Did the hard restart more than once,  checked hardrive install again, cables and connections.  Ran another install from the HP recovery discs and also ran a bootable disc that was to repair issues with installing a new HHD and enabling the HHD to work correctly. Still nothing working. Get same message.  Threw recovery manager got into command prompt and did a repair of the bootrec / nothing again. Checked directory and found at bottom of list it lists zero OS system.  So how do I get my harddrive formatted to accept the OS install? Any ideas to try, I've read and tried all posts I could fine on this forum.   thanks..

Thanks for the reply,  yes my harddrive failed and I installed a new one, but after using the HP recovery disc purchased though HP, computer showed a error screen in black saying bootmgr was missing.
Found out the HP discs partitioned the new harddrive, with windows on X:\ but was booting to C:\ which was just a recovery image.   X drive wasn't complete, was missing all drivers and could not activate the drive or change drive letter to C. I didn't know how to do this in command prompt.
Fixed my issue with a windows 7 installation disc not the recovery discs that came from HP, hopefully they will work to reinstall all drivers to the laptop, but we will see.  Used (repair my computer) on the installation disc and it repaired the bootmgr.  thanks anyway......

  • ITunes 7 and USB Harddrive issue

Everytime I install the new version of iTunes, it drops my USB Harddrive from the computer. The system thinks the drive is empty, yet all my folders are there, just no files. I do a system restore and no iTunes, but I can then see everything on the harddrive. What is causing this? I get an error that says failed to write to drive G: after the install which G: is the USB harddrive. Never had this issue before the update, and can't get back to version 6 now. So of course I can't update my ipod now.

Similar problem - when I upgraded to iTunes 7.0.2.16, my USB connected camera, my pen drives, and my iPod nano all stopped working.
I don't want to re-install my OS there has to be a reason

  • Desperate need of advice on harddrive issues!

Hello! I'vet got a Macbook pro 13" 2,26 ghz with an Hitachi HTS545032B9SA02.
Ive noticed that the coloured ball that spins has been occuring many times. I made the xbench benchmark on my harddrive and got a result around 45. My OS X version is 10.5.8 I noticed that many other with the same OS version got much higher score and that some with lower os version got better score. How come? Is there something wrong with my computer? I ran disc control, but it doesnt show anything. What to do? Has anyone ran xbench? What did you get? Also my harddrive is ticking sometimes, is that bad? It is a very low, subtile ticking.

I'm not familiar with xbench, but here is a utility that will give you a really detailed analysis of the physical state of your hard drive:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
You can download the demo and run it several times for free. If you click on "Show all", you can see the hard drives errors in detail.
Any noise from a hard drive is worrisome--be sure to keep a good, up to date backup in case your drive does fail.
Also, check on your RAM. If you run out of free space on your RAM, them Mac will have to use the hard drive to do what RAM normally does. One easy way to monitor this is to open Activity Monitor and use the dock icon to monitor RAM while you work.
Also, be sure your drive is not getting too full--it's good to keep 15%-20% free space on it.
    Good luck!

  • Harddrive issues when running disk permissions

I need some additional help. It seems like I screwed around with the terminal, or in fact downloaded some patch that I shouldn't have to get some free software and it jacked up my whole computer. Basically I can't delete some adobe bridge files and adobe device files. But I ran disk Utility and this is what I got:
    Verifying volume “harddrive”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid node structure
The volume harddrive needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
What do I do? Please help.
    Doobs

Boot from your install cd/dvd. Get past the language screen and go to Utilities in the Menu bar. Choose Disk Utilities>First Aid. Highlight your disk and hit the Repair Disk button. Invalid node structure is a fairly serious situation and you will probably need to run Diskwarrior to repair your disk.

  • Yet another External Harddrive issue

I use a Western Digital "My Passport" external hard-drive with my computer. It's been formatted to my Macbook, and that's the only computer it has been hooked up to. My problem is every single time I plug the hard-drive in my trash suddenly gains two files I deleted from it and they won't empty from said trash. Is there a virus issue or is there any way to fix this??

So what happens when you try to empty the trash with the hard drive connected?
What type(s) of files are these?

  • Macbook Extreme Harddrive issue!

    Hi there.
I am in dire straits over a problem I am having with my Macbook black.
When I open up my Macbook and turn it on, the computer plays the startup sound and goes to the loading screen with the Apple logo. Although the spinning animation beneath the logo continues to turn, it is on this screen that the computer hangs. It refuses to go beyond this screen.
I attempted to follow the steps on page 91 of my User's Guide. I tried the option of powering down and then powering on while I hold the option key. When I do this, it displays the harddrive icon, yet when I press on the arrow to select it, it does the same thing as before and hangs at the loading screen.
I also tried to access the Disk Utility function, however, I cannot get into this, either!
I also tried to reinstall the operating system, however, when I go to do that, it does not show my harddrive as a volume to install the system software on.
At the time, I was working on a document in Microsoft Word. I restarted my computer, and this was the result.
I am running the latest version of OS X, and everything was installed from Apple Update yesterday.
There were no additional peripherals attached to the computer at the time.
Please help, it is absolutely essential I figure this out, as I have a paper due Friday and a large exam on Monday, as well as all my notes from the semester stored on this machine.
Thank you in advance. I am a Mac newbie and some help would be much appreciated.

  • Replacing harddrive issues on restart.

I just replaced harddrive in my macbook pro.  It turns on to the apple page but justs sits there grinding away.  I formatted harddrive, install seemed to go when.  When it requested a restart, it went to the apple page and just sat there.  ????

It sounds that your machine is running fine, but it doesn't seem you've inserted the install DVD(s) yet. Turn on your MBP, insert the first DVD, and follow the onscreen instructions.

  • External harddrive issue

I recently moved all my iTunes files to an external hard drive by consolidating them there. I then removed my iTunes folder. Later my computer crashed and I had to reinstall iTunes. Now the information shows up in my iTunes but it can't find the files on my hard drive. How can I get iTunes to read my library on my external without individually searching each songs location?

I too have got this problem, in fact its the second time this has happened.
On the first occasion, after a lot of enquiries, I resigned myself to re-locating every song on the HD to 're-educate' the i-tunes software. Shortly into this process, it fixed itself!!!!! and all was back to normal. I say it like this because I had done nothing to cause this fix.
Now its happened again and once more nothing was done to cause the change. I was literally editing some song titles when it all changed and i-tunes couldn't locate the songs.
I have checked the settings (even tho it can't change itself) and the itunes music library is set to be on the HD as expected. I also reset it to be that same address but with no luck.
I was, until recently, the owner of a Creative MP3 player but decided to change to ipod because the Creative software was p***g me off. I have now come to the conclusion that ipod/itunes software is just as bad.

  • A205-S4587 Harddrive Issue

Hello MVPs there, I am having a problem with my laptop.
I have an A205-S4587 model and I was running a Vista Home Premium.  About two weeks ago, I upgraded my hard drive to 500GB, Seagate 7200 rpm from the original 110GB. I made sure it was detected by my laptop while I was in the store where I bought it.
I was able to make it work in my laptop by using the Recovery Disk which came with the laptop when I purchased it. I was able to restore everything and since the Recovery Disk does not have a partition option, I used Acronis software to partition the harddisk later after 2 days. My laptop worked for maybe two weeks and then the problem came.
It started with hanging up during start up. What I would do was to unplug the power, hit F2 and run in safe mode. Then I would restart and the machine would work perfectly. At once, I tried to use System Restore but it was not working.
For one week, I did that. That is, everytime I open the laptop, it hangs up then I will use safe mode, or sometimes I hit F8 and choose "boot using last good configuration" and it would work perfectly again. Hangs up here happened sometimes during the green bar scrolls, sometimes during password input in the user account, or even when I successfully entered the windows, after 5 mins the laptop would hang again.
Then one time, my ploy stopped working. I was no longer able to enter the windows succesfully so I decided to reformat the har disk using the Recovery Disk. Unfortunately, even the Disc Recovery hangs up in the part when I would click NEXT to start Recovery Wizard.
I can't remember what I have done, or what softwares i installed to cause these. but I remember that the last application I used was defragment software (Ausdefrag -a third party, not built in in windows) after I uninstall a program (i used Revouninstaller). Again Im not sure if it caused all these mess.
I regulary update my OS using windows update except Internet 8 and frameworks something (for firefox I think). Other than the two, I installed all updates of microsoft.
I appreciate any help anybody can give. Thank you in advance!
    Best regards, Cyrus

Ram, like most other electronics tend to either fail in the first 30 days or so (usually caused by a manufacturing defect) or they last for a long time (assuming they aren't physically damaged or abused).  Most GOOD quality ram has a lifetime warranty, something they wouldn't give if they didn't expect the product to last a good while.  It is possible thaqt your ram is defective.  Go to Memtest, download their CD ISO image, create the self booting CD, and run it to see if the memory errors out or not.  If you get ANY errors then the ram does need to be replaced which should be covered under warranty (unless you purchased cheap stuff).  The ram of choice around here tends to center on the KTT line of Kingston ram (Toshibas's tend to have problems with their Value Line) which does have a lifetim warranty and is reasonably priced.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • Mac HardDrive issues

Hey ya'll I hope ya can help me out. I have a 24-inch iMac. I believe it is a 7,1 (whatever that means). I really don't know much about these but from looking at other postings around the web and on here I believe the hard drive is about to crash. I first noticed a slight clicking sound coming from inside the computer a few days ago. At first it wasn't frequent, but now it is happening quite often (as in constantly). It almost sounds like someone is crackling paper in it and believe this is the heads moving around. Also the computer has gotten signficantly slower. In just the last 6 hours or so it has become nearly impossible to use. It freezes and I get the spinning wheel constantly. Then it started freezing and everything would become unresponsive, although I could move the mouse icon around the screen without a problem. Force quit would not respond and I could not restart or shut it down normally as well, so I had to just hold the button. I finally got it shut down normally after having to do that about 4 times and now I am letting it sit over night so hopefully I can get some use out it tommorow to back it up.
My questions to you guys are 1) Is what I have described indicitive of an impending hard drive crash? 2) Can I possibly run the system using an external drive we have sitting around here without having to replace the internal one? and 3)If we do need to replace the internal drive how much do ya'll think it will cost? If ya'll need me to answer anything else just let me know. Hopefully ya'll can help and I thank you for any attempts to do so.

Why don't you get free iStat Pro, which will show temps and fans speeds, and report back with the temps (preferably in Celsius.) Also, what does it say in Disk Utility for the drive? Verified or not?
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
With it shut down, you could try gently vacuuming out the lower intake grille where the speakers are located, the long exhaust vent at the top and, if there is one on your model, maybe another intake grille located behind the stand near the top. The 24" models are known for running hot.
You can probably use the original disc to repair the drive, if necessary, from its Disk Utility, but a 10.6 retail disc (only $29) will probably be better -- doesn't matter if you've updated. First, open Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities and verify the drive (not the same as SMART Status, verified or not.) The repair button will be grayed out. That's where booting from the disc to repair comes in. Run Permissions repair booted regularly, not from the disc, and only if the drive checks out.
Also, run the free demo of Smart Utility, which will run a better check on the health of the drive.
    http://www.volitans-software.com/smart_utility.php
The 24" models are known for running hot.
The entire aluminum back acts as a kind of heat sink. You could run a fan at the back of the case aimed at the hottest spot (usually the upper left) which will help dissipate some of the heat.

  • Macbook Pro 96gb kingston SSD + 1TB WD Scorpion Blue: Harddrive Issues

    Hi,
I would like to ask to following thing:
I installed the 96gb kingston SSD & the 1tb WD Scorpion Blue in my macbook pro (Mid-2008 model).
I use the 1tb as storage drive so my data gets moved to this drive. Now the following thing is happening:
When I try to play a file in itunes (.m4a audio file for example) the file gets loaded but suddenly stops playing. Same when I move large amounts of data to the hard drive it suddenly stops, the beachball pops up wait 10/15seconds and then continues.
Is there a way this can be fixed or is this a drive error? Should I check it with drive genius?
I don't have them installed in any raid or something like that. I just plugged them in and installed Leopard 10.6.7.
    Greetings,
    Maxime

I have to add that both drives are formatted with Journaled HFS+

  • DV7 Harddrive issues

I have a DV7-4295US that has been back for warranty repair 8 times. 7 of thoes trips were for hard drive replacement. The last time the hard drive went bad, i had a western digital installed at my expense. That drive has lasted 2 months and now it has failed today. I cant imagive that i am having such bad luck with hard drives and wondering what could be causing the hard drives to go bad on this model.

I don't know why the you're having so many hard drive failures, I can only guess, but the drives them selves are not to blame, something in the MoBo is causing them to fail.
Go into "Power Options" in the Control Panel. Click on "Change Plan Settings" > "Change Advanced Power Settings" In that list find "Hard Disk" and make sure it turns off after 10 minutes or so.
Perhaps a mother board problem where the drive is getting to much DC current, in which case you need to return the laptop for a replacement.
You need to push HP here to get you a new machine. There is something else going on here just beyond hard drive failures.
I would not suggest putting in an SSD, as it may be damaged. Throwing good money after bad is not a solution.
I think there is a fault in the MoBo that's causing the drive to fail. Keep at HP until they give you a new machine.

  • Harddrive issue

I just installed Aperture 3.1. When I went to open the program it wants me to "upgrade" my library to 3.1. I only have 77gb of space left on a 500gb internal hard drive. It says I do not have enough space to upgrade the library. Is there any work around until I can get an external hard drive to move my library to? At this point I can not use Aperture.

Thanks, I guess I'm going to have to go purchase a 2TB external drive to work from. I shoot in raw with a 25mp camera hence very large files. I had been in the process of putting "projects" on dvd's for storage in an effort to keep the library from filling up. At one point I had the camera in raw + jpeg mode and unknown to me Aperture is loading both files off the camera. Now I have a raw and jpeg of many photos that also fills up the drive. This is a challenge that I had been working on to relieve the pressure. I just checked and my Aperture Library is 353.15 GB...yikes! I have two spare external drives but they aren't large enough either. I guess I wait until I can purchase a larger drive.
    OH the pains of upgrading!

  • Strange rebooting issue

I bought a new motherboard, CPU and RAM (Specs in signature) a few days ago, and I've set everything up.
Now, when I boot the computer everything works fine and it gets past the BIOS etc, but when the OS (Windows XP Pro) loading screen is supposed to show, the computer reboots. The next time it boots it gives me the "Windows did not quit properly last time..." message, but whatever menu I choose, it reboots.
I also decided to try and reinstall Windows XP, and booted from the CD, but it gives me the error "File \i386\ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. The error code is 7. Setup cannot continue. Press any key to quit." when it's just gotten past the "Press F6..."/"Press F2..." messages. I've tried running the install multiple times and with different XP CDs, but it still shows the same error.

    Motherboard related?
    - Could an error on the motherboard cause this?
    - Could a jumper be misplaced, or needed to be added/removed/moved?
    - Could a connector be misplaced?
    Seems very unlikely to me.
    Quote
    RAM related?
    - Could the RAM be broken or incompatible, despite that MemTest says it's ok?
Don't think so. However you can let memtest run more passes. First I had twinmos mem. Sometimes memtest failed after the second pass and other times it failed after the 15th pass. With my new Kingston mem I was only satisfied after the 30th pass.
    Quote
    CPU related?
    - Could the CPU be broken somehow to cause this, or would the computer not run at all?
Don't think its your CPU either.
    Quote
I doubt it is a harddrive issue since the Windows Setup should not stop where it does. The description for the error I got when running the setup indicates that the RAM is incorrectly setup or broken.
Have you tried connecting your sata drive on the other controller?
I think you have let memtest run over a night just to be sure your mem is ok.
BTW, I have no doubt that everyone, who is trying to help you, is reading this topic from the beginning. I for one was thinking too that you didn't hit F6 when you quoted the messages you got.
