Harddrive still active at power off

Hello everyone,
I'm having an unusual problem with my HP Mini. When I go to shut down the laptop, it will proceed to run through the process with no problems until the end--the harddrive will start to spinup again right after POWER OFF is issued, and it then makes the noise that it would if I was making it force-shutdown by holding the power button. Not good.
I've spent the last two days searching the Wiki, google hits, and forums posts both here and on other forums and I can't find a working solution to the problem. What I think I want to use would be basically the same effect as running this:
hdparm -f /dev/sda
sleep 1
hdparm -y /dev/sda
Which would send the hdd to standby, and then shut it down. I've tried placing those specific lines in certain areas of rc.shutdown (middle and end of file, before and after the "/sbin/poweroff -d -f -h -i" line, which if it was working right should prevent this problem from happening anyway).
The problem is reproduced both with and without laptop mode enabled, and doesn't seem to be affected whether I shutdown from a cli or X.
One thing of note, it doesn't happen if I reboot, only shutdown. I can reboot, pop up to the grub menu and then hit the powerbutton and it shuts down "normal".
Which log files/script files would be useful in diagnosing this?

Thanks MadTux,
Scanning over the files, no errors are reported, I'm going to assume that the computer is doing exactly what I tell it to, not what I want it to.
Is hdparm the right way to control the hdd? I've heard of sdparm, I might try that, but the problem must be caused by some config file I'm overlooking...
EDIT:
The people at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=249653 have the exact same issue on an older kernel, and I get the same results when running the commands listed there. They mention a patch which will add a stop_on_shutdown file in the scsi harddrive's folder (for 2.6.22). Since I'm running a special kernel for my laptop (from 2.6.36), I'd rather not recompile it (Atom's suck), though I may do that in the end. I'll post back here if I find a working solution!

  • Do I have to power off a wireless keyboard and magic pad ?

    Hello,
I am a new iMac user. I recently purchased it with a wireless keyboard and a magic pad. The question may be simple. When I shutdown the iMac, do I still have to power off the keyboard and magic pad ? Or do they power down as well ? From little research I made, it seems like they would power down themselves provided that there is no other Mac with Bluetooth enabled within range. Thoughts ?
    Thanks.

The wireless mouse and keyboard that came with my Mid 2010 iMac are now paired with my MacBook Pro when it's on the desk, and the trackpad is on my wife's new iMac with 10.8. I don't turn them off unless I'm traveling with them. The trackpad and mouse can go over a year that way on a set of batteries.
The keyboard on the other hand, behaves differently. Where the other two devices will show slow but consistent decay of battery power over time, the keyboard batteries will stay at 100% for quite a while, then drop suddently to 50%, stay there a while, then give up. I've learned to pack a few extra AA batteries in my travel kit as a result of the unpredicitable dropoff instead of short life.
Still the battery life is pretty good for all three and I don't think it hurts anything to leave them on. I do, and the devices are quickly recognized when I open the computer.
It's up to you and what makes you comfortable. Either way they work.

  • My apps wont open, i already tried turning the power off but still they wont open :(

I really dont know what happened that all of my apps just wont open. I tried turning the power off but they were still crashing. Help please!!

Try to reset the device by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again.

Have you checked the macbook pro battery exchange page. A couple of months ago it became apparent that some batteries in macbook pros were faulty. check this site to see if your battery is one of the batteries request for exchagne. If it is Apple sends you a replacement battery and a return post bag wihtin a couple of working days.

Since updating my iPad 2 to IOS6 and activating my icloud for backup, my iPad has permanently locked. Message on screen is "iPad Not Backed Up". I click ok but no response. Cannot turn power off and cannot restore via my pc itunes. What are my options?

Thanks to everyone who responded and related subject helped. Holding the home button and power button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds does unlock the screen. I can now use my ipad again. However, a futher problem has arisen since updating to IOS6 and activating icloud at same time, Although not sure if its related. The problem is that when connected to my PC the itunes message appears 'Cannot read ipad'. It instructs you to restore but keeps timing out after about 1 hour. This maybe internet issue but can't understand why itunes cannot read my ipad. May need to completely erase all content & reset. Or any other suggestions why this has happened?

  • Why is my ipad still using battery power when switched off & locked away with no one using it?

Why is my IPad still discharging battery when switched off and locked away - with no one using it?  Charged it to 100% on holiday and locked in safe.  2 days later it was at 76%!

How is it "switched off"? Are you pressing the button on the top so the screen goes black? If so, that isn't shut off, but put to sleep. I will still be doing things in the background and using battery power.
To shut it fully off, press and hold the button on top, you will get a notification on the screen that says "Slide to power off". Slide the button and it will turn completly off.
If this is how you switched it off, let us know and we will see what else we can figure out.

  • One day i  was just flipping through my ipod i put it on sleep mode then next time i opened it without me doing anything it gave me an option of ''slide to power off'' i pressed cancel then  it automatically went back to sleep mode it is still happening

One day i  was just flipping through my ipod i put it on sleep mode then next time i opened it without me doing anything it gave me an option of ''slide to power off'' i pressed cancel then  it automatically went back to sleep mode it is still happening my ipod is jailbroken and i didnt fiddle with the settings.. please help.

If it is jailbroken, we are not allowed to help you with that here.  You'll need to seek out other sources of help.  The jailbreaking could potentially be part of the problem, for all I know.
BTW, just a pointer...  punctuation is your friend!  Your post was very difficult to read without any.  Many people will simply stop reading and click the "back" button when encountering something like that, which limits availability of help to you.

Apple will most likely exchange it. The one you receive will be refurbished.

That means you really did not restore to factory settings/new iPod.
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and setting and try setting the iPod up again.

What I see - there are no other jumpers;) on mobo (ex. clear cmos)
I use also only 20pin power connector...
So, is it the end of my wishes to have dead pc after turning off... ?
Maybe someone who knows some electronics could build u some device.
I have one bit similar kind, but it uses power from PSU to determine if PC is on or off, to start/stop my water pump (watercooling). It has medium sized condensator to keep power running in case of fast coldboot (shutdown and instant startup).
But I dunno who it would then turn power back on when you want to start the PC. One possibility is that you buy remote controlled AC on/off switch, so you can use remote control to turn on/turn off power from your PC, so after PC has shutdown you cut the power. But it will introduce one excess button to push everytime. :S
Also ductaping remote to your monitor will ensure you wont lose it :D
But it is not much your PC will use power when shutdown. Maximum for USB device to consume is 0.5 watts. So with mouse and KB (and mobo) you will propably consume like 1-2 watts/hour. While your VCR or DVD player will consume like 5 to 40 watts when they are in off-mode showing the clock.
Lets assume 1kW of electricity costs like 0.5 euro. With max usage 2w it makes 48 watts/day (if your computer would be shutdown whole day). Keeping it shutdown whole year you would use 17.5kW of power for nothing. Which then would cost you like ~8 euros.
Now if you want to actually save money your solution should be really cheap. Also this calculation is kind of "worst case scenario" I would quess the PC wont use even 1 watts when its shutdown.
For about 2 to 8 euros / year, I wouldnt bother to do much.
Maybe you should try to find some hobbyiest electronics forums and ask if they knew some kind of automatic solution to this. Or just use "jail remote control" and glue/tape some extender stick to your PSU on/off switch to be able to use it from sitting position and not to kneel to find it. :P
