Hardrive space missing?

So i just got my laptop Repaired by hp and they shipped it to me, so i was downloading some files i needed to work on when i notice they my maxed hard drive space was not the same when i bought it or before i shipped it to hp for repairs right now my laptop before the repair had 750gb of hard drive space now it only has 433gb, i don't know what to do i feel like i been scammed or they took a piece of hardive out of my laptop

OK the recovery partition is "in the way" so you cannot just extend the C drive. The only way to just add the unallocated space would be to go ahead and make the recovery media (DVD or thumb drive) and then delete the recovery partition then you could extend the C drive to fill up the whole disk. You could also just create a new volume in the unallocated space, format it, assign it a drive letter and you could then use it for storage. You could move your Music, pictures or whatever to it.

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing. I am using a brand new IMAC, I have 16GB RAM recently updated as it was running slow with 8GB and lots of hardrive space. When it crashes, i lose all my presents and it changes my preferences, it also fails to save or produce a recovered file despite settings asking it to do so every 5 mins now. When i try to report the problem, it says it has found an issue and gives me a link to a solution....but wont let me click on the link.... PLEASE HELP! It's killing my productivity.

If the crash started right after you added RAM, it could be a bad Ram dimm. You can try this - change the amount of RAM in Photoshop to 4G, this should stop Photoshop from using the higher ram. If it doesn't crash, it's probably the ram. Or run a diagnostic app. You don't say when it crashes, what you're doing when it crashes - it there a pattern? Did it ever work on this computer? Did it work on your previous computer? Without a lot of data, it could be related to the new computer... What OS version? Did you recently update it? Have you updated Photoshop to the most recent update?
Do you have any plug-ins loaded? Try restarting Photoshop, and immediately press & hold the shfit key to turn off plug-ins.

Is there a way to stop iPhoto storing my photo stream photos on the mac hard drive when enabled? They have not been imported to my library. No, Photo Stream is syncing with iCloud. The most recent 1000 photos in iCloud will be buffered on your mac, even if you do not import them to your photo library, if you enable My Photo Stream.
See this link:   iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.

  • Bad File Descriptor in /dev/fd/3, and 94Gb of disk space missing

I noticed a few days ago, possibly as the result of a recent kernel panic, that I have a large chunk of hard drive space missing. The Finder reports that I have approximately 89Gb of free space, but using "df" reports that there is approximately 178Gb free. Using "du" doesn't report any unexpected huge files, so I tried running GrandPerspective. In addition to the usual file usage and free space, this shows a single 94Gb block of "miscellaneous used space".
I then booted into Single User mode to run fsck on the startup drive. This reported several errors, and took 3 passes to repair the directory structure, but didn't recover the missing space. I have subsequently run TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior on the startup drive (both of which found various minor errors), but the 94Gb still refuses to show itself.
I then tried using "find" to look for single large files, using "sudo find / -size +94371840" (anything larger than 90Gb), and I get the following errors:
    find: /dev/fd/3: Bad file descriptor
    find: /dev/fd/4: Not a directory
    find: /dev/fd/5: Not a directory
After searching Google, a "Bad file descriptor" error points to an inode issue, that fsck cannot fix, but I don't know enough (read: anything) about inodes to risk running the clri command to zero the problem inode.
Short of blanking the startup disk and installing from scratch (not an attractive option), is there anything I can do to fix the broken inode and recover the missing space?
    Any help appreciated.

This is not an error and always happens with find unless you exclude the /dev hierarchy from the search. (Interestingly this seems to have gone away with 10.5??)
To locate your missing space, try WhatSize. Another alternative which I have not used personally is Disk Inventory X.
As an additional point, with 10.4 it is actually better to use Disk Utility, since it does more than fsck: Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck, quote:
Note: If you're using Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you should use Disk Utility instead of fsck, whenever possible.

  • Hard drive space missing?

There seems to be hard drive space missing on my yoga 13.
The C: drive had a capacity of 97,2 gb and the D: drive has a capacity of 3,99 gb, which adds up to just over 100 gb. But the computer is supposed to come with a 128 gb SSD - where is the rest of the capacity?

I found the extra four partitions, and am not hard over the extra 20G. I see (from other posts) where the partitions belong to. But a question I asked on another thread (New-to-Yoga-11s-How-to-start), perhaps not as eloquent; should I use the OKR HOTFIX? Will it give me some of the 20G back? Will it mess with the OKR system?

    Hi Gibby,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...
    http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omnidisksweeper/download/
And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

  • Missing Gigabytes of reported hardrive space

I have a 80gb hard drive. When Partitioned and Formatted it says I have 74.4gb of hard drive space. Fine That is about normal you lose about 10%.
When I double click on the hard drive icon and let the system calculate all sizes for folders and files, and add up the total I get about 41gb of files. The system says I have 10gb left. If the useable drive space is 74.4 and I list 41gb used plus 10gb left over, where did the other 23.4 gb go?

Thank you Francine for the help you provided in directing me to that discussion. It was very helpful and it let me do a more complete examination of the hard drive in question.
In the end what I found was three separate problems. The first was 3 .zip files that totaled approx 20gb of space. They were visable in the folder but did not get added into the total for the folders size when viewing it through the GUI. But when examined through terminal the proper size was show. I actually did not need them so I deleted them.
The next was 9GB of music files that did not get added into the total of a folder. Running disk verify seemed to clear that up.
Finally was about 2gb of folders/files that showed up in /Volumes A hard drive that used to be attached via firewire left some files behind. that drive does not exist anymore so I deleted the files.
Now everything seems to be back and stable.
    Thanks again

  • Nearly half of the 128GB SSD space missing

Hi all, I have an MBA 2009, model A1304. The Hard drive system information says its an "Apple SSD SM128". But when I look at the available and total space, I have one partition 28.8GB (bootcamp) and one 38.8GB (Main MacOS). Those are the total sizes. They come to 67.6GB. Now I read many forum posts complaining on 5GB lost here, 10 there. But this is like half the SSD drive. Could it be that its going bad and half of it was marked off limits or something.
When I boot the machine to MacOS, it shows a similar state (see screenshot below).
I would appreciate any help in tackling this.
PS when I look at the Admin tools > System management > Storage > Disk Management screen in Windows, it shows a 45GB "Unallocated space" partition, which is invisible under MacOS. I guess this is the missing space. Can I format it and use it under Windows? is this something in use by Bootcamp that mustn't be touched - i.e. could it be true that Bootcamp needs 45GB system space to operate?
    Many thanks..!

    Correction: MacOS is 10.6.7

  • Bug? - Spaces missing when copying from Adobe Reader

I have found that when attempting to copy text from some documents (in Adobe Reader)on IOS, to paste into a writer program, that all the spaces are missing.
There is not aproblem with the same document / Adobe reader on my Windows PC.
There was also not a problem copying from the same document using another reader (ios FileBrowser native reader), then pasting.
I quick Google found that I was not alone...
    https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/plaintext/2Bs49s1K9_o/KTwelaiqEIsJ
This link lays out the issue, not common to all IOS PDF readers, with a solution: use another reader.
Is there a solution for this in Adobe Reader, or how can it be reported to Adobe?

There are no spaces there. That is not how pdf files are constructed. HOWEVER, on PCs and Macs, the applications are smart enough to figure that spaces should be inserted into the text being copied. The iOS app is not smart enough to figure out on certain pdfs that it should insert spaces on copying from those problemsome pdfs. Adobe does have a feature request/bug reporting form where you can report the problem:

  • HD SPACE MISSING?

My HD is at 410GB used out of 500.  I only have about 230GB in Music and 65GB in Movies.  Can i really have 100GB's of applications?  The only big app I have is LibreOffice.  Can somebody help me to diagnose the missing space?

Thanks Allen.  That worked perfectly.  About a month ago I had deleted my contacts in address book because there were three of each but its all attached to the cloud so I had lost them all on my phone.  So I had to do several restores.  The restore mysync backups files were at 48GB because they don't automatically delete.  That now makes sense.

  • Losing Hardrive Space

Have a new mini mac about a month. Have 80g hardrive. I also have and external drive setup for my music and photos. My internal drive is now at 47gs dont know why i am losing hard drive space cant seem find out were its going. I am new to mac. Are there ways to see were my space is. I have tried searching no luck

You can use this utility to see all the files on your system, and it sorts them by large to small. This is the free version: http://software.filefactory.com/Mac/WhatSize_10-3-91.html

  • Problems with Yosemite update and hardrive space! How can I install and use macbook again?

I went to upload Yosemite but didnt have enough space on my hardrive. Now when I turn on my computer it tries to install - gets to about 15 minutes and then stops and says theres a problem extracting files from essential.
There isnt enough room on my hardrive to install Yosemite. I now cannot use my macbook. I cannot access any of my files, documents, apps, itunes ect. I dont know how to free up space on the hardrive when I cannot access anything.
tried to boot in safe mode but it will not let me. Stuck and unable to use computer. HELP!

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Satellite A300-10m - 30GB of HDD space 'missing'!

    Hi,
I have just purchased the Sat A300-10m.
The hard drive is suppose to be 250GB but the vista (c:)drive only has 116gb & the data (E:)drive 115gb.
In addition to that i have put 16.45gb of music on the c drive & now only have 67.6gb free.
There is 5gb used on the E drive for system recovery,
Basically as far as i can see im missing about 60gb of hard drive space & although space i understand that some is taken up by programs etc should it be this much & is there any way to check if for example i have somehow managed to load my music into 2 or 3 different places?
    A confused newbie to computers!
    Rich

    Hi
Your hard drive may be 250Gb before formatting but when any hard drive is formatted and partitioned you will loose a fair percentage usualy around 6-7%.
your OS will also take up around 6-9 Gb + depending on which you have and also you must have a fair amount of user progams which all take up space.
Also Toshiba have on their Satellite range a hidden F drive of around 1.5Gb for recovery as well as the folder on E drive.
I would if I were you put your music into E drive as C is always a volatile drive to store alot of data as everything uses it, this would include any pictures and anything else that would be precious or sentimental. E drive is just a data storage drive and not an active drive.
    Hope this helps

  • 72GB of free space missing...again.

Ok, so I have been having this issue intermittently since iOS 7.0. I am now on 8.3 (just upgraded to it this morning) but the problem is still here.
Basically, after a weekend of streaming a LOT of purchased videos to my iPad (not downloading them, mind you, but "streaming" from the cloud), my 128GB iPad will suddenly decide that it has no more free space. In Settings>General>Usage, it will show less than a gigabyte of free space; in fact this morning when I tried to update to 8.3 it told me there was not enough free space to even download the update.
I know for a FACT that I am only actually using about 30% or so of the device's capacity. I can go through the usage section and add everything up manually, or better yet, just plug it in to iTunes. iTunes will tell me that the iPad has 73GB of free space available!
Why the discrepancy? I've managed to fix this before (I do NOT want to factory restore, and quite frankly I shouldn't have to), but I can't remember how I did it. It seems to me that there is some sort of download cache that the iPad uses when I stream my purchased videos, then it forgets that it downloaded those and so it doesn't clean up after itself...
Any help here would be great...this is probably the 5th time I've had this happen after streaming a lot of my purchased videos, and streaming purchased videos is the only thing that seems to actually cause this storage capacity black hole.

Ok, after messing around a bit more it would appear that I've fixed the issue.
    Heres how:
In Settings>iTunes & App Store: Turn OFF Show All Music and Videos as well as iTunes Match.
Open the Videos app, hit edit, and delete anything that is showing up in there (even though there shouldn't be anything in there now since none of them have ever been downloaded by me).
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store, turn Show All Music and Videos and iTunes Match back ON.
