Hardware Change = Reinstall?

This goes to show that even though I've worked with Linux for awhile, I'm still somewhat of a newbie... probably a stupid question, but there you go...
Anyways, my motherboard seems to be dieing a slow and painful death (taking out my Videocard on the way down... long story there) and so it's going to be replaced soon.  My question is, if I'm only replacing the motherboard itself, would my Arch install still boot alright, or would I need to reinstall so that the drivers for the new motherboard are installed properly?
Thanks!
Locri

No you don't need to re-install, it should be transparent to Arch, If something went wrong, at boot time, you only need to re-generate the initcpio image, coz maybe the modules have changed, otherwize nithing should be wrong...
EDIT: Oh and if you plan to change the Graphic Card, you need, of course, to edit xorg.conf for the new video card

  • Kernal panic fixed by hardware change??

    Hello,
I have a G4 that I've upgraded quite a bit* and during the last month it has been randomly** suffering from kernel panics, sometimes when I'm using it, sometimes when it's left on its own. When I reboot (as the screen instructs me), the computer gets as far as the grey apple logo (but no spinning loader) and goes into kernel panic again.
Previously I had had to leave the machine for several hours before I could successfully reboot again. Recently, however, I've discovered that if I say unplug the DVD drive or swap a stick of RAM the machine will reboot successfully immediately.
So I'm wondering why, when I alter the hardware attached, should the machine boot up immediately as opposed to me having to leave it for several hours if I don't? Could this be a screwed motherboard (pls say no)? What goes on during the early stages of boot that would in effect reset the system preventing the kernel panic?
I've reinstalled the OS and have recently started to check the hardware, which I will continue to do. I write now because I believe if I can find out why hardware changes temporarily fix it I should arrive at answer sooner.
    NOTES
    * - Upgraded 2 months ago with Sonnet Encore 1.6GHz cpu and ATI 9000 graphics card. Machine run for about a month with absolutely no problem. Sonnet say its not the CPU.
** - Can be anything from 2 days to a week between crashes.

I have a similar problem with kernel panics and freezes but the computer will restart again afterwards and I don't have to shift my hardware around to get it to do so. However it has stopped chiming at start-up which I know is bad. It is a little more stable if I stay in the log in screen and access from my other computer on the network but it will freeze even then at times. The error log for my panics is:

  • Lens correction filter doest work after hardware change

    Hello,
Since I reinstalled my computer from scratch  after a hardware change (went from AMD GPU to an NVIDIA GPU)  lens correction filter doesn't work anymore.
I can open the tool, do the corrections but when I pusch apply, the tool is closed but the corrections are not applied to the picture in the editor screen.
    No layer is added.
When I close PSE multiple temp files are left in the root directory of my secundary drives.
This happened with PSE 7 so I bougth PSE 9, de-installed PSE 7 and installed PSE 9. Guess what: same problem, no corrections applied.
Is this Nvidia related since everything worked nice in PSE 7 with amd catalyst drivers ?
I'm running Vista32 sp2, with latest directx and latest nvidia geforce drivers.
    mda97

    1) The problem with the Delete Cropped Pixels option is that it essentially eliminates the nicest functionality of the new crop tool.....My suggestion to Adobe would be to enable some way of having the screen view imported into the lens correction filter but leaving the cropped information intact for future adjustments once the image was returned to the main PS window....
    2) The Camera RAW preferences setting adjustment was what I needed, thank you!
    3) The problem with the saving to PSD option, is that even when I do NOT have layers, it seems to default to saving as PSD.  Essentially, any adustment I make, except the most basic, even if I do not have any layers as a result, gets interpreted as needing to be saved as a PSD.  This is categorically different than in all prior editions of Photoshop.  (For instance, whenever I worked on JPGs and I would save a file on older versions, it would simply default to JPG unless I actually had visible layers in the layers window.  On this one, if I do anything like content-aware fill, or use the patch tool or healing brushes, it then saves to PSD by default, even though there are NO visible layers that need flattening.  It seems as if the program is interpreting those kinds of adjustments internally as layers and selecting PSD as the necessary file type to save to as a result.)
Thanks for your help; if you have any other suggestions for work arounds for the third problem, I would greatly appreciate them.

  • Freezing/Crashing in sleep or hibernate mode after hardware change

Hello. To get right to the chase, I have this envy 15 series laptop. It came with a 768GB hdd, which I upgraded to an SSD (512GB one) Recently, I decided to downgrade the storage back to the original hdd the laptop came with. I was obviously expecting my system's performance to decrease, especially with boot times and what not, but I was also expecting the performance to be the same as what it was when I originally received my laptop, more or less. However, this has not been the case. The laptop's performance has greatly suffered after reinstalling the *originaly hdd this laptop came with* Issues: Boot up times are ridiculously slow now. I mean, so slow that I figure I should go downstairs and have a drink while I wait for it to boot slow. It was never even remotely this slow, before or after upgrading to my ssd. When the pc goes to sleep, it does not wake up. Perhaps it would wake up if I left it alone for a few hours, but I'm not willing to do that, and no one should be. I'm also speaking literally right now. I have to force my laptop off and then turn it on normally in order to boot back from "sleep" mode. I've since had to turn off automatic sleep. If I close the lid to let my laptop hybernate, it does not recover. When I turn it on, it looks like it will return from hypernate, but it does not. It turns itself off. When I turn it on again, it boots normally, but it does so as if I had shutdown the pc and then booted back up. It takes windows a long time to login, and get everything running so that the pc runs normal. None of this is normal. This pc has absolutely no excuse to be running this slow. It never has, and it only started after switching back to my hdd. What I did: I cloned my HDD onto an SSD. In case it matters, I used Acronis true image to do it. Last night, I switched back, and used the same software to clone my SSD back into my HDD. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but there you go. I used sector writes to clone the SSD back into the HDD. I think I did the same to clone the HDD into the SSD the first go around, as I seem to recall having issues with the automatic clone last time as well as this time, but I'm not 100% positive. Troubleshooting steps I've taken: I first ran a complete chkdsk /r in order to fix any problems, and then allow me to extend my C drive for all of the free space my disk now had, due to cloning a smaller drive. I then did a full defrag and optimize on my disk. Finally I ran winsat to recheck my hw's performance, and let windows know that I no longer had an SSD but rather an HDD. This turned superfetch back on, and I confirmed that it was now running again. I'm not really sure what else to do.

I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY 15-j171nr Notebook and issues with Freezing/Crashing in sleep or hibernate mode after hardware change. Here is a link on performance issues. I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which has helped others. I hope this helps. Thanks.

  • My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

My MacBook Pro is running very hot after lion install.  Are there any hardware changes that will help? What can I do to get it back to normal?

I get the impression that most of the users on older hardware experiences similar temperature issues on Lion for a long time now. Awaiting for confirmation from the original poster.
In the meantime I'm just cautious with regards to pushing the machine to such extreme temps, since something tells me such behaviour which includes monitor flickering and the likes is nothing but abnormal for any type of use...
Any clues if 10.7.5 does anything on this? If not I'm afraid i see myself going back to SL for good...

  • What are the changes to be done on BW end during hardware change of source system?

    Hello Gurus,
There is some hardware changes happening and I need help in certain things which I need to do from BW point of view.  First of all, I have attached a figure showing my system landscape.  I would kindly request you to go though the fig first.
For QA, initially we were using AG3 as the source system, now they have made the hardware changes, made a system copy of AG3 into the new system AEQ.  We have connected our BW QA system to this new system AEQ.  Now when I check the system, there are no data in set up tables (I am using SD and MM), but there are data in tables.  But when I replicate data sources from AEQ to BW QA, the existing transformations and DTPs will disappear. So, that left me with 2 options-
    1. Either transport old transformation and DTP from BW DEV to BW QA
    2. Or create new transformation and DTP in BW QA system.
Can you experts please suggest me what should be the solution?
Also, please note that, the basis team started the hardware changes with ECC QA system for some reason.  Once ECC QA is fine, they are planning to make the changes in ECC DEV system (from AG2 to AED).  Currently, AG2 is connected to BW DEV and AEQ is connected to BW QA.
Can you please suggest me whether there will be any issue if we opt to transport transformation and DTP from BW DEV to BW QA when BW DEV is still connected to old source system?  Or, is there any other easy way to sort this out? Please suggest?
    Thanks a lot
    Rakesh

    Hi,
    1. Either transport old transformation and DTP from BW DEV to BW QA?
Yes, better to transport from bw dev to bw qa
    2. Or create new transformation and DTP in BW QA system?
at BW Quality, creation may not be possible. Better to transport from bw dev to bwq.
or use standard abap program to activate transformations and dtp.
When changes are applying at source then you just need to take care the delta queues
clear all queues by running related V3 jobs and delta info packs. make them as 0 count.
once basis team was done changes later try to check your delta loads at bwq .
    Thanks

  • Real Application Testing , hardware changes.

    hi ,
Have always wondered How Real application test would over come one of the cost Common issues in Testing. Here is the scenario .
Lets say , Customer is running oracle 10.2.0.5 on a Server with 16 proc's and 24 cores and 150 GB RAM on his production box ,
Now he wants to test 11.2 on this test box, with lesser hardware specs. say 8 proc's and 12 cores and 60 GB RAM ,
My doubt is , how will the replay process in RAT overcome this change and compare the test with production ???

You must understand that RAT is actually a term. The underlying ways would depend on what you want to test and to what extent? Since you have mentioned a hardware change, the suggested way would be to use DB Replay using which you would capture the workload from the prod box, move it to the test box and replay that workload under the changed hardware. Using DB Replay would allow you to have a delta between the two runs and you can measure the performance gains(or loss) .
    Have a read,

  • Hardware changes might not have been detected

    Hello,
I am getting the error message "hardware changes might not have been detected" for five days now. Using HP Pavillion g6Notebook PC/Product No. : D8Q59EA#ABF running OS Windows 8 (not wanting to upgrade to 8.1)
After Windows automatic security and KB updates, and HP update, five days ago I started having error messages when trying to watch videos online. Video would start and five seconds in 'black-out' with error message 'unable to play video' imbeded in video itself. I then noticed sound abscence on my laptop and noted that although all sound controls are at proper settings, there is no sound. Device manager is showing NO exclaimation marks or warnings. HP Action center is saying 'no issues' and Control Panel automated fix tools are all coming back as 'unable to fix problem', OR, when running troubleshooter in CP for hardware and devices getting the "hardware changes might not have been detected message". I have tried using a restoration point to before issues began, which temporarily fixes the sound issue but it then goes off again. Same with 'HP recovery' option for 'drivers', temporary fix that does not remain. Tried 'system restore' from a restoration point just done where sound WAS working but even that, once done, quickly lost the sound. Tried Microsoft onliine auto fix tools and they too are unable to fix the problem. Windows updates all up to date, no 'optional updates' available other than Bing Desktop and Microsoft Silverlight, both of which I do not want or need. Drivers all up to date it appears, including with HP Updates. Intuitively it feels as if the drivers are up to date, recognized and functioning, but then 'something' is 'disconnecting' their recognition/functioning, IF it is in fact even a driver issue. I have been reading for several days and narrowed it down to that. Seen a few articles re the EXACT same problem referenced on an OS Windows 7, but not ONE where a solution that fixes the problem exist! Thank you in advance for your help and please advise if further details are required.  I have added no new hardware recently, or ever, in fact to my laptop, only Kaspersky Pure MANY months ago and it is working perfectly without conflicts.  Thanks again.

    Hi RedmoonWolf,
Bit of a puzzler of an issue for sure. And you're right, there's very little out there in terms of similar error messages, and how to fix them.
I would consider going to the Windows Update window, and noting which ones went through lately. Then, another place to start first might be to go back to that same restore point again, and this time halting the automatic updates.
Once that is stable again, try updating any browsers you use, and also Adobe flash, as a lot of videos work off of that.
Secondly, before doing any more updates, go ahead and run the system file checker - might be something that it'll catch and fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Finally, if all is going alright, create another restore point, and then try the updates again, hopefully this time around they'll work

  • [SOLVED] "Can't find root device" after hardware change

My old computer died so I got a replacement. The only hardware changes were the motherboard/CPU and a lack of GPU (since it died too). GRUB was setting root to /dev/sda2, but in this new computer that wouldn't work. I figured I'd change it to /dev/disk/by-label, but it still won't boot. I have udev loaded in mkinitcpio.conf and have tried what I could find on google (it had to do with pacman mostly, which is not the issue here).
I'm currently running a gparted parted magic live disc and checked already if the partition is corrupted; it isn't.
What should I be looking at to get by-label working? What kind of info do I need to provide in order to get some help (fdisk, blkid, etc)?
    Thanks in advance.

Are you sure that that label/partition still exists? (e.g. your filesystem hasn't gotten corrupted)
Have you rebuilt the initramfs since you changed hardware (e.g. via chroot)? If not, try booting using the fallback image.
All you should need to do to get booting by label is change the root= statement in the bootloader's kernel params to
    root=LABEL=arch
the initram image's code should handle the rest at boot time.

  • Unable to login to SAP instance after hardware changes

    Hi,
We have a central instance and 3 application servers. System board and NIC cards have been changed by windows team on one of the applications servers. After the hardware changes users are not able to login to SAP. All the instances are placed under logon group and the users login through load distribution.
After hardware changes, we have started the application server and SAP is running fine on it. Now it has response time 0, which is best of all instances. All the new logins are diverting towards this instance as it has better response time of all and the instance is not allowing users to get into it nor to any insatnce. When we pulldown this instance users are able to login to other instances.
We have treid changing NIC cards and windows team confirmed that ILO is working fine.
Please help us in resolving this issue.
    Thanks,
    Venu.

Primary checks - check logon groms SMLG - if the distribution are done and active with all instances.
also check by login directly to CI without any logon grop and check that all the instances are shown in SM51 by double clicking and checking all work process for each instances look perticularly if all the Diag WP's are free for all instances.

Are you sure that that label/partition still exists? (e.g. your filesystem hasn't gotten corrupted)
Have you rebuilt the initramfs since you changed hardware (e.g. via chroot)? If not, try booting using the fallback image.
All you should need to do to get booting by label is change the root= statement in the bootloader's kernel params to
    root=LABEL=arch
the initram image's code should handle the rest at boot time.

  • Impact of Hardware Change on SSO tickets

    Hi Experts,
We are carrying out a hardware refresh  of our production EP database server.  Hardware refresh involves changing the server on which the EP database & application servers are residing with no change in the Hostname and IP addresses for the EP servers.
We use SSO tickets to connect our EP system to our ECC6 system for accessing ESS/MSS functionality & are doing an impact analysis before the hardware refresh & would like to check if there can be any impact to the single sign on setup between our EP & ECC6 system.
    Appreciate any comments.  Thanks.
    Regards,
    Murali

    Hi,
There should be no effect at all unless and until Hostname and IP address does not change.
    With Regrads,

  • CUCM - best option for physical shift and hardware change

We need to move a Call Manager 8.6 cluster to a new location. The plan is to provide replacement UCS hardware at the new locaiton which will need new IP addresses and hostnames. The cluster has Security by Default, and there must be minimal user disruption. Looking for the recommended option to achieve please

    Hi,
Are you planning on upgrading at the same time? If so you could use Prime Collaboration Deployment which can do most the work for you. Essentially build a new cluster then move your phones over by changing the TFTP 150 option.
I don't have a lot of experience with the security side but found the below which should be of assistance.
Check out Section: Migrating IP Phones between Clusters with Cisco Unified Communications Manager 8.0 and ITL Files
