Hardware encoding for mpeg2 and h264

Hi Folks,
I'm looking to clear up the bottleneck of processing mpeg2s. I have a 2009 quadcore mac pro and it's not bad for speed, but I just finished a 36 hour video transfer to DVD for a client and the processing took 4.5 nights (I ran my files overnight while I worked on other projects during the day).
So, I'm looking for a hardware solution mpeg2 encoding. I see GrassValley has the firecoder, but it was PC only? I'd like something similar to the Maxtrox CompressHD which exports right from within FCP. I think the CompressHD is what I'll get for h264 encoding although I'll admit to date, it's mostly been personal encoding of my own home movies for AppleTV and my Pentax DSLR and headcam which shoot HD. I know clients will want that service as well.
Any suggestions for the mpeg2? I realize it maybe a dying breed (re: using DVDs), but most of my clients are older and prefer DVDs.
Cheers,
Keebler

Thanks Shane. I figured as much, but wanted to double check in case I missed a setting list for either device.
I shudder when I think of virtual clusters b/c, as mentioned, I can never get them to work right. Either that, or my set up isn't optimal (I'm over a giga-ethernet and have a 2009 MP and a 2006 MP (and a few other machines i 'could' use).
The odd thing is that Bitvice, from Innobits, accesses all cores without any tweaking, set up (or begging It just works. I was just hoping for a solution.
I will admit that I've yet to try a cluster since the latest compressor update, but I'll review the links I have again.
Fingers crossed
Thanks for taking the time to answer - I do appreciate it and I always value your input.
Cheers,
Keebler

  • Hardware Encoder for H.264?  Encoder for Flash?  Render Farm?

I use Compressor to create H.264 QuickTime files, and have setup Qmaster to use a 8 core cluster to expedite the process, but it is not reliable, and fails quite often. I have a total of 3 Mac Pros in my facility which can all share their resources to help this process be quicker. I was wondering if anyone knew of a hardware encoder that will encode H.264 files very quickly? I have a bid on a project that if granted, I will need to encode a VAST amount of H.264 QuickTime files. Is the best solution a dedicated Mac Pro render farm with a Qmaster setup?
Next, on to the Flash. I currently use Sorenson Squeeze 5 to encode 2 pass VBR flash files, and it takes forever even on my 2.8ghz Octo with 10gb of RAM. Does anyone know of a piece of software or hardware that can expedite this process? Maybe a Flash render farm? Maybe a gnome with a wand?
    Thanks in advance.

Keep your eyes open for when the Matrox CompressHD goes on sale.
While it probably won't be available to use on the job you've just bid on (tentative sale date is May 2009 but who knows if that can be trusted), it otherwise seems like the answer your prayers - it speeds up h.264 and Flash encoding. It will, supposedly, list for $495.
Otherwise, as mentioned, the Turbo264HD is the way to go for now.

  • Need HDV encoding for backup and encoding in windows.

Need HDV codex for PC. rather than caputre back to tape then onto my PC with ASpect HD.
I would like to encode a project and store it on my pc with little to no loss in quailty. Is there any type of codex that will keep te HDV quailty but plays and encodes with WINDOW MEDIA ENCODER? and what are the settings?
I have done this with DV footage by going to export - Useing quicktime conversion: settings avi -Options - DVCPro. I can't seem to do them same useing HDV. I think the new FC6 can do this. but how?
    thnaks for your help

You would need a utility that will encode to your desired format (AVI?). Such utilities would be Sorenson Squeeze, Autodesk Cleaner and Compression Master. Copy it to the Windows system after encoding. And yes, it will take a very long time unless you have a node cluster (render farm) of some sort so you are probably better off sending it back to tape and capturing it natively on the PC if you are wanting to work on the footage there. If you are just wanting to play the video on the PC then encode it.

  • Hardware Requirements for OC4J and Oracle DB

    Hi,
I'm looking for some information about hardware requirements for a server that will run a Oracle DB and OC4J. It will be used for training purpose (about 10 people) and for running small apps using ADF.
Does anybody knows how much hardware I need?
Is there any documents from Oracle for hardware requirements?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

    Greetings,
We routinely develop and test on a Dell Vostro laptop with OS Windows XP and 4GB RAM. The key is to either run the Oracle db in a VM (10.2.0.1) with at least 0.5 GB RAM for the VM or use the XE db. I personally prefer the XE db as it is lightweight and easily configured or uninstalled. As far as oc4j is concerned, a lot can be done to improve the efficiency by modifying the oc4j.cmd file in driveletter:/oc4j/bin:
set JVMARGS=-Xmx512m -XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit -server -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -Dclass.load.trace=class-not-found -Dclass.load.log.level=finestThe JVM args settings are fully explained at:

  • Differences between MPEG2 and H264

I have just purchased a HD PVR to record HD from the TV.  A bonus is that it connects to our wireless network and I can view and play files on my PC (which is in another room).  I have an HD video camera but usually render the output to DVD PAL so I can burn a DVD and watch it on the TV.  Now I can output in HD without the need for a Blu Ray burner, I am wondering what format I should be choosing for the final output:
    1. MPEG2 1080i 25 fps OR
    2. H.264    1080i 25 fps
The file size is about 15-20% smaller with H264, but it's the quality that is of most importance to me.

What are your output bitrate settings?
For fast moving subjects (sports) setting the bitrate higher is needed... I will guess the same is true when the camera moves as you describe
I know that for a DVD (all I create) I have the maximum bitrate on an Encore render set to 8... since you are going HD, you should check into those settings

  • Advice on hardware choices for PS and other CS software

My G4 is on it's death bed. I have an opportunity to begin doing some ad design along wih the other graphics and 3D work I do and need to get not only a new computer but move up from Photoshop 7 and add Illustrator and Acrobat. If money were no object this would be a moot question and I would get a Mac Pro. But having to get both a computer and costly software at the same time makes money an object. Basically I would like to know if any PS users are running the software on an Intel iMac and if so are they satisfied with the performance? And if so, what configuration are you running? I have never been a big fan of the all-in-one concept but my bias may be unfounded.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Jim

OK, I placed my G4 Mac on its deathbed by installing Apple's OS X 10.5 (Leopard) It was a G4-400 (Sawtooth) with a 1GHz processor upgrade and 1.5G of system RAM. A very good, solid computer that lasted a long time (about 10 years).
I replaced it with the Mother of all Macintosh computers: A Mac Pro running 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors with 8GB of installed RAM and a 1T boot drive (with a 1.5T drive I purchased aftermarket for Time Machine). I am running Adobe's CS3 applications, which are Universal applications and they do run just fine on it.
My Mac Pro was a $6,000 piece of hardware. And that is a lot of money.
You don't need a Mac Pro to run Adobe's Creative Suite unless you are doing a lot of work with After Effects in high definition. And Apple has just released an alternative to the Mac Pro that is very affordable and may be just what you need.
The 27-inch Quad-Core iMac has a wonderful monitor and enough processor to run two or three Adobe applications at once (which is what I tend to do constantly). It is expandable from its standard 4 GB of system RAM to 16, which is certainly enough to allow Photoshop to work on billboard-sized projects as well as do good long RAM previews with After Effects. It comes with a 1T SATA drive and you can choose to install a 2T drive if you wish, though you'll want an external Firewire drive or array for Time Machine, as well as a scratch disk. I do recommend that you choose the faster processor option, which is $200.00, but the stock price of the Quad-Core iMac is just under $2,000.
And your G4 can do fileserver work in the corner.

  • Character Encoding for JSPs and HTML forms

After having read loads of postings on character encoding problems I'm still puzzled about the following problem:
I have an instance (A) of WL 8.1 SP3 on a WinXP machine and another instance (B) of WL 8.1 without any SP on a Win2K machine. The underlying Windows locale is english(US) in both cases.
The same application deployed as a war file to these instances does not behave in the same way when it comes to displaying non-Latin1-characters like the Euro symbol: Whereas (A) shows and accepts these characters as request-parameters, (B) does not.
Since the war file is the same (weblogic.xml, jsps and everything), the reason for this must either be the service-pack-level or some other configuration setting I overlooked.
    Any hints are appreciated!

    Try this:
    Prefrences -> Content -> Fonts & Color -> Advanced
At the bottom, choose your Encoding.

  • Need hardware suggestions for midi and audio

    hi everyone,
im thinking of getting a new imac and setting up a little recording studio in my room. nothing fancy, just for my own enjoyment.
i've been looking for the best way to plug in my midi keyboard, and microphone/instruments. is a breakout box the best way to go? i won't need to record more than one instrument at a time. is there a box that has one midi input, one instrument input, and maybe an xlr input that will work with imac/garageband? will i need a preamp for this, or will it boost the signal as well?
any recommendations on models are greatly appreciated.

i use the Edirol Audio Capture midi device. it has midi in out ports, audio L(mono) and R in ports, and an audio out port. I use it mainly to play guitar and record it into garage band, but my brother uses a keyboard attatched to it through the midi port and that works fine too. I definetly reccomend it.

  • Hardware needed for wifi and stay hard wired to Mac

I just got an IMAC and I want to set-up my wireless network. My kids have Ipod Touches and I want to stream music over the stereo instead of them plugging directly into it. The stereo is up stairs and the Mac is down stairs next to the modem. I still want to stay hard wired into the Mac though. To do this do I need Airport Extreme and Airport Express or just get wireless router and Airport express?

Lager, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry but there is no way to wirelessly stream music from an iPod touch to the stereo.
The AirPort Express (AX) can accept music streaming from iTunes and send it out to a stereo via its sound output port. However iTunes must be running on a computer.
You could use any 802.11b/g compatible wireless router with 2 or more Ethernet ports connected to the modem. Your iMac would connect via Ethernet to that router. Then place an AX next to the stereo and configure it to join the wireless network provided by the wireless router.
This will give you the ability to stream music from iTunes running on your iMac to the stereo.
BTW, there is an iPod touch application which allows you to remotely control the iTunes running on your Mac so that you could change the music from the iPod touch.

  • Adobe Media Encoder - Encoding Very Unreliable and Freezes regularly

    Hello All
Would really appreciate this being addressed very soon as it is having a huge negative effect on our workflow currently.
Basically we have 4 films all no more than 30mins in length that we need to encoded for BluRay and DVD having edited them in Premiere Pro CC. We open AME and load up the PP sequences we need to encode (they are all the 4 films from the same project just different sequences). The sequences load and we set destinations for the encoded files and check the formats that we are encoding too etc and then hit start/go and the encoding starts. However, it simply takes AGES to even begin encoding and sometimes it doesn't even start it just sits there like a lemon seemingly doing nothing at all! It has not frozen as I can access menus etc but it is just looking like it is about to do something but it either takes about 15-20mins for something to start happening, then it encodes fine (until it reaches the next sequence then AME usually becomes unresponsive and I have to Force Quit!)
Why is it freezing like this and why is it talking so long to begin the encodes?
We have kept the 'Enable native Premiere Pro sequence import' checked in the Preferences as this has been working okay for single encodes to the web and I really like the speed it brings the projects into AME at. I do not want to have to uncheck this option. If it is a bug that is causing the problem meaning we have to work around it by diabling this handy feature then Adobe should be busting their tail to bring out a fix for this. Doing without a feature is not a solution!
Also, we have GPU CUDA acceleration on in the Renderer again this should be on in my opinion and I am not happy with changing to 'Software Only' as a resolution. This will not do!
With these four films we have two different encoding formats happening at the same time often when the problem happens (one to BluRay and one to DVD) however it is now also happening with just DVD encodes so I am highly frustrated as I have deadlines and not meeting them as finding it nearly impossible to get anything out of AME in a resonable and timley manner. THIS NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION ADOBE! When CC was introduced I am pretty sure we were promised faster routes to upgrades and fixes to issues.
I'd really appreciate either some assistance to the problem or a confirmation of when the next update is coming that will resolve the problem. Otherwise, FCPX and Compressor is looking like a good investment and I'll jack in my CC subscription!
    Many thanks

So I tried again without unchecking the box and it worked......after 50 minutes of idling following me hitting the 'go/play' button in AME.
Once the encoding began it worked great. Why did it take so damn long to start the encode?
    Weird!
Incidentally, I did try unchecking the box and AME crashed/became unresponsive on starting the encode which is why I tried again with the above method. Is it just that is was a long sequence? It was approx. 25 mins for peoples information.
    Cheers

  • Hardware requirement for BPM Suite

    Hi All,
What are they Hardware requirements for Oracle BPM Suite.
    Regards
    Nasir

    Hi Nasir,
    As per other experts...
There is not much difference between hardware configurations for SOA and BPM.
As BPM 11g works on top of SOA 11g. So just we need a bpm extension.
So as a high ens congiguration u need to have minimum 4GB RAM to work with Jdeveloper with SOA and BPM extenions.
It is advisble to have seperate boxes for all SOA, BPM, DB, OSB servers for better performance.
    Hope this might help u...
also follow the link for 11.1.1.5 installation process that might anwer your question..

  • What happened to dual sources for input and monitoring?

In LP7 you could set up for two different hardware sources for input and monitoring. That's Gone?
Gee's there is so much wrong with LP8 and all the constant crashes, makes it an unusable program. Apple really needs to get this fixed. They should already had a fixe. Lord knows they have seen enough disgust from users. To go this long without any updates is shameful! IMHO!

You download and install the software on your computer, same as you've always done. The software runs on your computer, same as it's always done.

    Hi Atrsams,
According to your description, you need some hardware recommendations for deploying and maintaining a SQL Server Analysis Services cube, right?
Though this isn't a sizing recommendation, I'd encourage you to buy as much memory as you can afford. This is generally the choke point I've seen on servers, especially when using SSAS. For the detail information about it, please refer to the links below.
