Hardware error on my iMac

Hello. I was having problems w/ my iMac and so I ran the Apple Hardware Test. It immediately came back with an error: 4MEM/2/40000000:3CBE8054
Does anyone know how to figure out what this means? It certainly looks like a memory problem, but I'd like to know for sure ...
(the machine is an iMac w/ 2 GB of RAM and a dual-core 2.33 GHz processor)
Thanks!

HI Andrew,
You are correct. The memory is bad and needs replacing.

  • My iMac 8.1 was slowing down and had permissions problems. I backed everything up, and then re-installed. Now all I get is a black screen. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: HDD-1336. Help!

My iMac 8.1 (10.6.8 ) was slowing down and had recurrent permissions problems, mostly with Java. I backed everything up, and then re-installed from time machine. Now all I get is a black screen which says I need to reboot. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: 4 MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1336 or HDD-1327. When I reboot from the OSX CD and start disc utilities everything checks out OK. When I reload 10.5.2 from the OSX CD everything seems to work OK and no more permissions problems. But then I loose all my email and safari stuff. Anyone have any ideas short of going back to my old PC?

    Cheers. Don
No unfortunatley it's too old, you are referring to Target Display Mode which became avialble in 2009, your 2008 needs to have the HD replaced. I'd still do that if everything else is OK or you can simply buy a new MM and display or even a new iMac  or an Apple refurbished iMac to save money.

  • Hardware Error when burning DVD's

I keep getting an error message when burning DVD's using Toast Titanium on my iMac..it reads:
"Drive Reported an error, Sense key = hardware error, sense code = 0 x 03."
Twice after getting that message I couldn't continue to burn and it stopped, once it did continue to burn and finished successfully. Any ideas, anyone?
    17" iMac G5 w/ iSight   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   upgraded to 1GB RAM

I get the same message today when burning from Toast 7.02 on my iMac. It happened when I was trying to make an audio CD from my iTunes collection (not when Copying from CD to CD). The exact message I got in the middle of my burn was:
    The drive reported an error:
    Sense Key = hardware Error
    Sense Code = 0x03, 0x01
I tryed again with another CD and got the same thing. I never had a problem with these CD's (TDK CD-R up to 48x).
I wonder if there has to be some sort of software upgrade fro Roxio Toast or is this a superdrive malfunction/etc. My Superdrive gets very loud during this burn as well. I may take it in to Apple Genius Bar. Any ideas?

  • DVD DL burn issues - internal target error - fake hardware errors

I am receiving an error from DVD studio pro 3 and Toast 6 when burning DVD DL. The error only appears when burning Memorex and Verbatim discs (so far) using these applications. HP branded DVD DLs burnt fine from the same applications. Aside from the obvious, using only the HPs, has any one found a solution to this problem.
My error code is ....Formatting failed: internal device reports hardware error:internal target error 0x440x00...
I have tested this on other macs in my office and can repeat the error, so it leaves me to believe it is not actually hardware, but more over, likely firmware and or software upgrades. All equipment is less than 16 months old, intel chipped... I need a fix for our travel edit laptop - a Mac book pro.
Another thing that makes me conclude it isn't actually a hardware issue, the same discs that won't burn in Toast or DVDsp3, burn just fine using the finder's burning capabilties.
    Thanks!

its been a few days since I posted my problem- i'm not surprised there hasn't been any movement on this topic... seems to be the status quo for all topics about this DVD DL problem..
For those with a similar problem, I'll review my work around for the situation.
Here is the low down review of my problem:
    • the matSHITa DVD-R(UJ-846) will not burn DVD DLs from Toast 6 or DVD studio pro 3.
    • the Mac says internal hardware failure or sometimes a session error - see previous posts for code
    My work around:
    • export disc image from DVD studio pro
    • burn image as DVD-ROM (UDF) WITH simulation mode checked.
    • worked for Memorex 8x DVD+R DLs, Verbatim 8x DVD+R DLs not at 8x speed, used 2x setting.
It takes a longer time for this route but has work consistently on about 15 DVD burns so far... I'll post again if this fails or stops working.
Again that is an intel chipped Mac Book Pro and iMac with the matSHITa DVD burner. Yes I capitalized that 4 letter segment on purpose.

  • Hardware Error Code

I ran the hardware test on my iMac and got the error code disp/15/5 back from the last test (video I think). Anyone know what that code is for, or know where to get a list of codes. My monitor gets little blue or yellow dots after a little use, then they build up more and more and I end up getting the grey screen with the reset symbol saying I need to reset.

Any guesses on how long it would take until the computer was completely unusable? I'd always be able to boot it via firewire off another computer to get the HD backed up right? Right now it isn't really up long enough to do a complete backup. I'd have to do bit by bit.

  • Hardware error when Burn DVD

    Hello,
I am using DVD SP 4.1.2 and when I go to burn my DVD, it burns for a while, then comes up with this error message:
"The recording device reported the hardware error: Tracking servo failure (0x09, 0x01.)"
What does this mean? Is my iMac's DVD burner gone bad? Or is it the DVD+R? (I'm using the Office Depot DVD+R 16x) Or is it my settings? MPEG-2 SD SD DVD Standard, NTSC, 4:3 Aspect Ratio, Drop Frame, Field Order Bottom, Two Pass VBR, Bit Rate 4 to 7 Mbps, Motion Est. Best.
Thanks for any help you can give.
    Sincerely appreciative,
    Paul

  • Is a Disk Utility "fatal hardware Error" Always fatal?

    Help!
I'm traveling for the next four weeks and have my lap top with me to do work.
Last night I was working fine on my computer when all of a sudden Photoshop wouldn't open files right. I quite out of Photoshop (slow)
Then tried to quit out of everything else (slow) and finally shut down holding the Power button down. I waited a few minutes and tried to reboot.
It was REALLY slow starting back up. (about 15 to 20 minutes). I held the Power key down to turn it off and left it overnight hoping it would figure itself out by morning.
This am the same start up problem happened. I finally got it opened and manuvered to Disk Utility.
    IT GAVE ME THIS MESSAGE
This drive has reported a Fatal Hardware Error to Disk utility.
If the drive has not failed completely, Back up as much as you can and
then replace it with a working drive.
HERE IS WHAT I DID EARLIER IN THE EVENING THAT I THINK MADE IT WACKY.
I hadn't installed SUITCASE X1 yet and was using the program Font Book that comes with the computer. It wasn't satifactory so I went ahead and installed Suitcase X1.
FONT BOOK kept showing a ton of open faces.
I carefully (or so I thought) went through Font Books "All fonts" window and got rid of fonts that I didn't see in the system fonts folder. (I think this is where I really may have screwed up)
FYI I am a graphic designer and use many fonts.
I store all the design fonts in a folder in USERS > SHARED> FONTS
I directed SUITCASE to "Manage system fonts"
Every thing was working fine for a few hours.
I was working in QUARK 6 easily and listening to a Podcast. No problems.
When I went to open PHOTOSHOP, it (Photoshop) started running very slow.
and all the things I mentioned above started to happen.
I have the OS10.4 install disk with me so I tried to boot from it.
(I thought maybe it had a utility on it to help fix things or maybe I could copy any important fonts that I accidently trased
(btw do you hold down OPTION C to boot from a CD or APPLE C?
    I tried them all)
I couldn't get it to boot from the CD
Have I really wrecked my computer?
Do we think it's a font problem.
Can I fix it. I'm at the beach in NC and there's no techys around!!!!
I am currently typing this email on the laptop so it's not completely dead.
Just super slow and threatening to die.
    What should I do??!!!
Did I mention today is my birthday?
    PowerbookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It's either OPTION or C. Unfortunately, the Install CD doesn't give you much access to file operations (no Finder) as Mac OS 9 and earlier did.
If you could start it in Target Disk Mode and mount the drive on another Mac, or boot it from an external drive with a Mac OS X installation on it you could try to recover files that aren't already backed up.

  • Hardware error (Sense code23A00) - Now what should I do? Please advice...

    Hello,
I would like to burn a new project to a DVD. Encore is giving me the following message over and over: "Encore was unable to complete the operation because of a hardware error (Sense Code 23A00). Contact the hardware manufacturer.
Please advise me what the best next step is I can take...
My version of Encore (CS3) sits on a Windows XP SP2 machine that is newly installed (last week) and still squeaky clean. I don't know who the manufacturer of the DVD-drive is. It worked fine before, and it works fine with other DVD0-burning software now (I know that doesn't mean a lot).
I use Imation DVD+RW discs. Before my clean install I had CS2 and it worked fine with these DVD's.
I have read the "Things and Software to avoid when authoring for DVD-V" document. None of the points there really seemed to matter to me (I don't have any of the identified problems, and use Nero software, which it does not reference). One point that does raise some questions is #14: "Disable the Windows XP packet writing utility": when I click on properties for the DVD-drive there is no Recording tab. Is that an indication of something that might be wrong? I have also searched these forums and read all the postings I could find on similar sounding messages.
It now seems I have three options. Which would you advise?
    1. I can buy DVD's of another brandname, or not +RW. Interestingly enough, when I burn a DVD it goes through the process of acquiring all the data and checking transcoding settings, and then quits as soon as it really needs to start writing.
    2. I can buy and install another DVD-burner. What brand would you advise?
    3. I can tell Encore to create a DVD image ad then use Imgburn to burn said image to a DVD. Not a fan of this approach, I don't want to buy another program.
I can go any of these three roads. Perhaps there is a 4th option I have not thought of? I am kind of hoping someone will see my message and know exactly what the problem is... #1 is of course the easiest and cheapest option. Problem is none of the solutions guarantee success...
I would really appreciate any input you might be able to give me! Thanks in advance,
    Rogier

    The
Things and Software to avoid when authoring for DVD-V
    FAQ does mention Nero:
    5. InCD: This is packet writing software that comes bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove programs, then reboot to remove it.
If your installation of Nero didn't include its packet writing part then this doesn't apply obviously.
    >...when I click on properties for the DVD-drive there is no Recording tab.
Could possibly be an indication that the drive isn't properly recognized by Windows. While you are in the Properties screen, what does it display as name for the drive?

  • Blue Screen of Death Hardware Error

Hi, i have a new laptop (2 months old) and i just got to school. After using my laptop for a little, i a have repeatedly got the BSOD message. I have already got it twice today. It says Windows has an uncorrectable hardware error.. Any information would be helpful, Thankyou!
Edit: i know how to get to the minidump files, i just dont understand what to do with them.
Also the stop code error is 0X0000007F in my most recent crash.(there is also a bunch of other numbers too) Please Help!

Turn OFF the Notebook and once its powered ON, keep Pressing F10 to load BIOS screen of the Notebook. In this screen under Diagnostics, run the test on hard drive and memory. Post back the results here.
Also in startup menu there is an alternate way where you can run F2 (System Diagnostics). The instructions can be found at below link

  • Windows 8.1 Installed now I received a Fatal Device Hardware Error

Windows 8.1 kept popping up to install update.  I would refuse it.  Then recently it updated itself.  After that, i noticed it took a little longer for my laptop to boot.  It would show a blue screen for a little bit then it would boot.  Yesterday, I received an error (can't remember what it said) needed to restart because of an error.  I ran the Hard Disk Test and Quick and then the extensive test.  it stops at one sec remaining and noting happens.  I did get a fatal device hardware error.  Can the update to Windows 8.1 cause this to happen?
    This question was solved.

  • File permission error; NI-488: DMA hardware error detected

I'm running LabVIEW 8.0 on the latest supported SUSE linux. My vi saves a data file. If I save a file named "/home/bill/LabVIEW/data/file.dat," it saves okay the first time. But then if I run the program again, it gives me an error instead of just writing over file.dat (which is what I want it to do).
Error 8 occurred at Open/Create/Replace File in filename.vi
    Possible reason(s):
    LabVIEW: File permission error.
    NI-488: DMA hardware error detected.
Also, I don't know if this is related, but when I click on the folder icon to the right of the file path on the front panel, and navigate to the directory mentioned above, then type "file.dat," I get the message "/home/bill/LabVIEW/data/file.dat does not exist." Shouldn't this *create* the new file?
    Thanks,
    Bill

You should really start your own thread describing your problem in detail. One of the issues here is that there are two possible sources for the error code 8. Which one is applicable to you? What platform are you on? What version of LV? What are you trying to accomplish? What exactly triggers the error?
Please start again with your own thread and with the answers the questions I asked (as well as anything else that you think might be of value).

  • I have a MacBook Pro, Matshita UJ-857E while recording music my drive reported an error: Sense Key=HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code=0x03,0x01 I have no idea what this means, and now my cd burner/player won't work. can someone help me fix this problem?

Please Help me. I am having problems with my MATSHITA UJ-857E DVD-R burner/writer. I burned 4 cd's and then it stopped working.
I can select my songs, and then it asks for a blank disc. It starts preparing to write the disc, then it says,"
The drive reported an error: Sense Key= HARDWARE ERROR Sense Code= 0x09,0x01 TRACKING SERVO FAILURE.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to fix it or what this means because I have no idea what it is talking about or how to begin to fix the problem?

    tanyafrombakersfield wrote:

This is an error reported by the optical drive's firmware. The tracking servo is the servomechanism which guides the laser pickup along the track on the optical disc. The error means that the servo couldn't do its job within the programmed parameters. What it doesn't say is why.
You have to be very precise as to when this error occurs. If it occurs as you wrote, while it "starts preparing to write the disc", and not when it has actually began to burn, then it's likely that the drive has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
There are other possibilities, so you should check them, but they would be more likely if the error occurred after the drive began to write. OrangeMarlin has suggested two options -- try a different brand of CD or DVD, and try cleaning the lens.
