Hardware for SoFS cluster for Hyper-V

Hi,
I'm considering placing a SoFS cluster in front of my existing SAN to allow a Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster to use SMB 3.0 shares for storage. 10Gb Ethernet and 8Gb FC used. I would connect the Hyper-V cluster to SoFS with 10Gb Ethernet on separate storage VLAN
and connect the SoFS nodes to the SAN with 8Gb FC. What type of servers would you recommend for this? I'm thinking something like 2x Dell R620 2x 12core xeon cpu, 128GB RAM with 4 10Gb ethernet NICs and 4 8Gb FC HBAs.

CPU and RAM are not an issue. CPU is completely irrelevant and RAM can be used for CSV cache so more you throw in faster you can go with read-intensive workloads. SMB3 is not cached on SoFS shares. Making long story short: you'll be fine :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

I would also look strongly at no antivirus as well, but if you do, here are the recommended exclusions and possible issues with Anti-Virus to look out for.
    Look for the Hyper-V section:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/953.microsoft-anti-virus-exclusion-list.aspx
Big things to stay away from from a VM level too:
    1. Do not have a set time when all VMs will kick off a scheduled full disk scan.  This can create an I/O storm on your hosts as well as saturate the CPUs as well.   Look for products or settings that allow for randomization of full disk scans on
the VMs or do not do full disk scans and only keep the real time scanners active on the VMs for incoming writes.
    2.  Watch for Antivirus products that update all the VMs at the same time.  Again, sometimes you can randomize or exclude a scheduled full disk scan, but sometimes an automated update that kicks off say at 12am can then automatically kick off a
mini scan.   This can also create disk I/O and CPU storms.
The problem that still exists with many Antivirus products today is that they try to scan as fast as they can and then get out of the way.  This works ok for endpoint desktops or laptops, but when you have 50 or more VMs on a host all ramping up trying
to get done as quick as they can, then this can cause some issues.

  • What is the best free backup solution for Hyper-V R2/2012? CSV support is necessary

    Hi,
    I need so guidance, please.
I’m planning to deploy a free backup solution for my virtual environment and I need your advice. I have the following configuration:
    Failover Cluster:
    Two Dell Servers
    OS: Windows 2012 STD
Each server has two AMD Opteron 4180 6C @ 2.6 GHZ
    16 GB – RAM (supports 256GB)

    OS: Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter
It has two Intel Xeon E5520 @ 2.2 GHZ
    16 GB - RAM
    It’s hosting 3 VMs
In my research I found these apps. All of them are limited in some way but they do the job:
    Veeam Backup Free Edition v7
    Altaro Hyper-V Backup
    Unitrends Enterprise Backup
    PHD Virtual Backup for Hyper-V
    HV Backup from CodePlex
    Windows Server Backup (WSB)
What is your experience with them? What would you recommend?
When it comes to money, which one is more affordable? (In case I want to buy the full version)

  • Assign management ip address with SCVMM 2012 R2 for hyper-v converged network?

    Hi,
I am setting up a converged network for our Hyper-V clusters using vNICs for the different network traffic including management, live migration, cluster-csv, hyper-v etc.
Problem is, how do I assign the hyper-v hosts a management IP address? They need a network connection on the management network for scvmm to manage them in the first place. How do I take the existing management IP address that is directly assigned to the
host and transfer it directly to the new vNIC so scvmm has management of it? Kind of in a chicken and egg situation here. I thought about assigning a temp ip address to the host initially but am worried that assigning the address will cause problems as then
the host would then have 2 default gateways configured. How have others managed this scenario?
    Thanks

Rule of thumb: Use one connected network for your Fabric networks (read the whitepaper), and use VLAN based networks for your tenant VMs when you want to associate VM Networks with each VLAN.
    -kn
Kristian (Virtualization and some coffee: http://kristiannese.blogspot.com )
We don't have tenants as such due to this being an environment on a private company LAN for sole use of the company virtual machines.
    What I have so far:
I created "one connected network" for Hyper-V-Virtual-Machine traffic.
Unchecked "Allow new VM networks created on this logical switch to use network virtualization"
Checked "Create a VM network with the same name to allow vms to access this logical network directly"
This logical network has one site called UK.
Within this site I have defined all of the different VLANS for this site.
Created IP pools for each VLAN subnet range.
I hope I understand this correctly. Started reading the whitepaper from cover to cover now.

What do you mean by "off host"? Do you want to have backup software running directly on top of EQL firmware? Or do you want to avoid proxy servers and have steady stream from EQL to backup storage?

  • Scan code for hyper key

I bought a programmable keyboard recently for which I can program the hardware scan code of each key. I would like to have a key that is recognized in X using the default xkb rules as the hyper key, but I can't figure out for the life of me how xkb translates hardware scan codes into "keycodes" which are then mapped to symbols in the /usr/share/X11/xkb/keycodes files. Basically, if someone can tell me how X goes from hardware scan codes to keycodes, or just what the scan code is for hyper in the default X keyboard config, I would appreciate it immensely.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. So after seeing this thing about setkeycodes, I thought that maybe there was also a getkeycodes, and surely enough there was. Running it gets you a table like this:
Plain scancodes xx (hex) versus keycodes (dec)
for 1-83 (0x01-0x53) scancode equals keycode
    0x50: 80 81 82 83 99 0 86 87
    0x58: 88 117 0 0 95 183 184 185
    0x60: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    0x68: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    0x70: 93 0 0 89 0 0 85 91
    0x78: 90 92 0 94 0 124 121 0
    Escaped scancodes e0 xx (hex)
    e0 00: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    e0 08: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    e0 10: 165 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    e0 18: 0 163 0 0 96 97 0 0
    e0 20: 113 140 164 0 166 0 0 0
    e0 28: 0 0 255 0 0 0 114 0
    e0 30: 115 0 172 0 0 98 255 99
    e0 38: 100 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    e0 40: 0 0 0 0 0 119 119 102
    e0 48: 103 104 0 105 112 106 118 107
    e0 50: 108 109 110 111 0 0 0 0
    e0 58: 0 0 0 125 126 127 116 142
    e0 60: 0 0 0 143 0 217 156 173
    e0 68: 128 159 158 157 155 226 0 112
    e0 70: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
    e0 78: 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
which shows that a scan code of e068 maps to 128, the keycode for Hyper, by default. Great, problem solved.
Unfortunately, when I fired up the keyboard programming software, it wouldn't let me assign a scan code of e068 to any keys, for some unexplained reason. Okay, so I use an unmapped scan code, 0x68,  that it does allow me to use. I figured I'd use setkeycodes to set 0x68 to map to 128. But now when I run showkey -s, the key that I thought I programmed to 0x68 gives 0xe078, with a keycode of 192, even though getkeycodes suggests that 0xe078 is unmapped. I even tried booting the kernel with the atkbd.softraw=0 parameter, to no avail. Furthermore, when I run xev in an X session, the keycode for the key in question now shows up as 249.
By this point, I had no idea what was going on anymore, so I just gave up and used xmodmap to set keycode 249 to Hyper_R. I now have a Hyper key, but I can only get it via a series of obscure commands, rather than something that works out of the box. Oh well.
If anyone can explain what was going on here, I'd still like to know, just out of curiosity.
    Thanks again.

I have several B200M2's with Intel Xeon x5670's and M81KR's that I'm installing Hyper-V on.  Anybody have recommendations on boot policies for Hyper-V?   I've got the two obvious ones of Execute Disabled and Virtualization Technology enabled, but was wondering if there were any specific ones that could improve / degrade performance that I should enable / disable?

Those are the only two I've heard of modifying for Hyper-V.  Good write up here explaining those two common settings.

  • Help go count hardware for oracle server

    Hi,
    I need to count hardware for Oracle server;
users obout 10000 people at the same time.
What memory(RAM) and proceesos frequens(MHz) should be?
Where to find information about it?

You should consider that if 10000 users will be concurrently in the database, and if at least 2m ram will be consumed by an oracle server process (just to start), then 20000mb ram will be required (at least) to support 10,000 oracle processes at the same time, about 20Gb for users, next, consider the amount of required SGA memory (not an exact value, as it depends on the database profile, DWH, OLTP, Hybrid). plus the processes for the regular OS operation.
This is not a small application, have you thought about growth? You should be thinking about scaleability. May be not a huge machine, but a cluster of more affordable machines that will grow with your needs.

  • Can any one say that list of hardware for 11gr2 2node rac installation?  thank in advance

can any one say that list of hardware for 11gr2 2node rac installation?  thank in advance

    Hi ,
    Hardware Requirements
Physical memory (at least 1.5 gigabyte (GB) of RAM)
An amount of swap space equal to the amount of RAM
Temporary space (at least 1 GB) available in /tmp
A processor type (CPU) that is certified with the release of the Oracle software being installed
A minimum of 1024 x 786 display resolution, so that Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) displays correctly
All servers that are used in the cluster must have the same chip architecture, for example, all 32-bit processors or all 64-bit processors
Adequate disk space in the software installation locations to store the Oracle software
You need at least 5.5 GB of available disk space for the Grid home directory, which includes both the binary files for Oracle Clusterware and Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) and their associated log files, and at least 4 GB of available disk space for the Oracle Database home directory, or Oracle home directory.
    About Shared Storage
These Oracle Clusterware components require the following disk space on a shared file system:
Three Oracle Clusterware Registry (OCR) files, 300 MB each, or 900 MB total disk space
Three voting disk files, 300 MB each, or 900 MB total disk space
If you are not using Oracle ASM for storing Oracle Clusterware files, then for best performance and protection, you should use multiple disks, each using a different disk controller for voting disk file placement. Ensure that each voting disk is configured so that it does not have share any hardware device or have a single point of failure.
    Network Hardware Requirements
When you configure the network for Oracle RAC and Oracle Clusterware, each node in the cluster must meet the following requirements:
Each node must have at least two network interface cards (NIC), or network adapters. One adapter is for the public network interface and the other adapter is for the private network interface (the interconnect). Install additional network adapters on a node if that node meets either of the following conditions:
Does not have at least two network adapters
Has two network interface cards but is using network attached storage (NAS). You should have a separate network adapter for NAS.
Has two network cards, but you want to use redundant interconnectsIn previous releases, to make use of redundant networks for the interconnect, bonding, trunking, teaming, or similar technology was required. Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a cluster and Oracle RAC can now make use of redundant network interconnects, without the use of other network technology, to enhance optimal communication in the cluster. This functionality is available starting with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.2).Redundant Interconnect Usage enables load-balancing and high availability across multiple (up to 4) private networks (also known as interconnects).
However, When you install Oracle software, Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) automatically performs hardware prerequisite checks and notifies you if they are not met.

  • Is there any limitation of firmware or hardware for QoS configuration (4400 controller & 1252 AP's)

    Hi Experts,
Before proceeding for adding AP model 1131 and 1252 into my set-up , I need to know whether any limitation of firmware or hardware for QoS configuration in wireless set-up .
    I have 4400 controller and 1130 & 1250 AP models.

    Hi Vinod,
Since you have 4400 controllers, you can run upto WLC 7.0.x code. Refer this for more detail
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html
there is no specific limitation to 1131/1252 AP model as such, everything is WLC software dependent.
From later software 7.4.x,7.6.x,8.x, lots of improvement for QoS configuration & bandwidth control, but since your controller is old hardware, you cannot have those latest features.
here is a reference post on how QoS works in wireless environment

  • Swap hardware for 10.2 database Linux (datafiles reside on SAN server).

    Hello Gurus,
I am planning to upgrade hardware for two production database servers (currently Oracle 10.1.0.3.0 on Linux AS3 32bit) to New Dell Poweredge 6850 64 bit Linux AS4 upgrqade 7, Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 with replication enabled on certain tables.
The database tablespaces and datafiles exist on a SAN storage server. I was wondering what is the fastest way to hook up the new servers and migrate or integrate the currrent two databases into the new hardware. I was looking at the old "export/import" but that would have some serious downtime. Transportable Tablespaces looks like an option- but I have no experience in it.
My new servers have Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 installed and the servers are named the same as the old servers. Is there a way to have the new servers point to the SAN storage and just "pick up" the existing tablespaces and datafiles for the existing two databases? I have retained the block_size on the new configuration of 8K.
What is the fastest way to get the new hardware up and running connecting to a SAN storage device "seeing" the old database.
I would love any advice, I have a metalink account- but I thought this type of question would be better suited for the masses of experts out there who may have gine through this exercise before.
    Cheers,
    blakey

Seems You want to migrate from 32bit architecture to 64bit?
Then for upgrade to 10gR2 see metalink note 316889.1
And as oracle will change from 32bit to 64bit as well (not only linux will 64 bit, but oracle software as well), then additional step for changing wordsize to 64bit is needed. And that is described in metalink note 62290.1
Migration: as Your db is on san storage (everything including controlfiles, parameter files and so on) - then create equal mountpoints on new server (stop databases on old server, mount db related disks from storage to the new server) and that's it - next part is upgrade and migration to 64bit wordsize.
Probably oracle software is installed on local disks and that means You will have to manualy copy $ORACLE_HOME/dbs - spfile, password file to the new server. And of course listener.ora, tnsnames.ora files as well.
You can reffer to this metalink note 363609.1 for more details
Of course, before go through all configuration (/etc/sysctl.conf and so, create equal /etc/oratab and adjust oracle user profile for new server).
And before starting anything - take a full backup of oracle database (hot or cold, whatever You preffer).
