I'm having some issues with my iPhone 4's home button and wondering if others are experiencing this...
Sometimes I'll click and get no response. Sometimes a single click will bring up the multitasking. Sometimes a double click will take me to the spotlight screen. It doesn't seem to matter how hard or where I click. At this point it's a mild nuisance, but if it gets worse, I'll make the 2hr journey to the Grand Rapids Apple Store to see about a replacement. Has anyone else experienced this and had any luck with a no-hassels replacement from Apple? I've thought about restoring the phone, but I'm pretty sure this is strictly hardware related and it wouldn't do any good.
Thanks!
G
I had the same problem.
Apple will replace the phone. I had the same problem (Home button didn't work) with my fresh just out of the box iPhone 4. I took it back to Apple (not ATT), and he took one look at it and replaced it, no questions asked. Took all of 5 minutes. I think there was a bad batch of 'home' buttons.
If you don't replace it, it will only get worse with time. Have no problems with the replacement. They will give you a fresh one, you keep the original box, and will place a new s/n sticker on the box. Was it refurbished or a new one? I don't know. It was back in mid july, so not likely to be a refurbished. I didn't care, it was brand new looking.
P.S. With my bad Home button, I could tell it was slightly recessed from the screen front. The new one was not. Whether you have that or not, take it back. The Home button should work every time. It's hardware, not software.

  • Air package installation issue:  Grey screen, black dots.

    Hi,
I am new to this forum, and to air development in general, but loving it!  I turned to air for a recent project in which I needed support for UDP, and have been pleased with the DatagramSocket.   However, I am currently installing my software, on sit, and under a very tight deadline and I am (all of a sudden) experiencing problems.
My apps have all been created using Flash CS5 on snowleopard, and debugged with the air runtime.  I have 8 pcs with clean installs of win7 and 1 running XP.  My setup process included installing AdobeAIRInstaller.exe version 2.0.4.13090.  After setup, I've continued by installing the .air packages which I created with Flash.  The packages are signed with an "home-made" certificate.  When I finally launce my .exe however, all I can see is a grey screen (at the intended resolution of my ap) with 4 or 5 black/grey dots, cycling - as if they are a load bar.
I should add that I used this same process in te shop to test my files on a PC with identical specifications and setup.  I have disabled windows firewall, and the machines have flash player 10 installed.  I have no virus software running.  The air apps do not rely on any local media, but they do contain calls to amfphp, as well as dynamically loading content from a web server.  I believe that the IP configuration for the server is correct, and the programs work from my machine (leopard) in debug mode.
Any hints?  Is this a 'feature' that I'm not aware of, or perhaps something windows-specific?  As I mentioned, I am on  very tight schedule, so any help is GREATLY appreciated.

    Hi,
Would it be possible to get access to your project or sample code that reproduces the issue?  Please feel free to email me at [email protected], if you zip your file up please remove the extension so it can get past our email filter.
Couple of other questions.  Are you seeing this problem occur under when running the app under Flash CS5?  Have you tried using a network traffic monitor to see what might be going on behind the scenes?  Are the cycling black dots part of your UI or do you believe this is something Flash is producing?
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Home button not working on iPad 2 after iOS5.1.1

I got iPad 2 updated with ions 5.1.1
It worked fine for a week and now the home button does not work. I followed all posts here to reset, restore etc. but nothing helps. This is already a replacement iPad I got for my previous non functional iPad 2 which had battery issues, which apple swapped in store last week.
    Any advice ?

    Update -
Called apple support and did not get steps to try and was asked to visit apple store. Went to apple store and since the problem is intermittent they did nothing.
    Now the problem is back.
Also, I notice there are lot of Low memory diagnostics logs which I thik may be leading to home button not working BUT that iOS should handle as part of memory management. I restarted iPad 2 and still memory issue/ home button not working which seems weird
I am really disappointed and not sure how to get this addressed.
    Apple, please help!

    Hi there Swapnil_Pandey,
In order to address the other issues, we first need to address the hardware issue with the home button. Please take a look at the article below for more information on your available service options.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • My screen went black but the phone is still working because I can hear my text tones come in and also is ringing when someone calls.Screen is still black.Held the home button and top button for up to 5 min,I'm not getting an apple logo for reset. HELP!

The contract on this phone expires March 19. Its not worth getting a new one over a few weeks!

Yes, I understand that. But The screen issue is not a result of user damage. The phone was not dropped when the screen got cracked. My daughter was standing in a chair at the table and dropped one of her toys onto the bottom of the phone and cracked it right by the home button. (Nowhere near the LCD/digitizer flex cables, connections, or logic board components) then a few months later my phone had died, I plugged it in, it showed it was charging, then Apple logo disappeared and screen didn't work. AFTER contacting Apple about the issue and them telling me that it "is a result of the very minimal crack to the sheet of glass that has no relation to the LCD or Digitizer and that the warranty does not cover it I had taken it upon myself to change the LCD/digitizer to no avail, as well as backlight ic and backlight coil to no avail. But how do I go about letting Apple know that it is in fact NOT due to the cracked screen nor is it due to the flex cable connections? I can't. So the lady that works the call center phones  trying to "convince" me that she knows what she is talking about and "convince" me that it is from the cracked screen I have to take her word because I can't show Apple that its not because of that without paying them $199 to fix the screen in which case they will just send me a new phone rather than fix the faulty hardware under warranty.

  • Iphone 4 has a black screen which will display the apple logo for approx 10 seconds, then goes blank for 10 seconds and so on.  I have tried a hard reset with power button and home button but no change.  Get no response when attempting to connect to itune

iphone 4 has a black scrren which will display the apple logo and appears to be at start up but then blacks out for approx 10 seconds and then displays apple logo again.  Same action over and over.
I have attempted hard reset but cannot complete.  Also attempted to connect with itunes and it does not recongize device.
Device is frozen in this display loop.  Have an appointment with genius bar tomorrow but it's a 2.5 hour round trip so suggestion appreciated.

Your device may need to be restored as new in iTunes (instead of restored from a back up as it seems that there is a software issue on your phone).
If your phone is not able to connect in iTunes try forcing recovery mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808)
    * power off your phone.
    * Hold the home button while connecting your phone to iTunes.  You should see the connect to iTunes window and your computer should give you the recover mode alert.
*Restore your device as new. Being sure not to restore from a previous back up.
You will then want to sync your information back to your device from Outlook, iCloud, Google or wherever your information is stored.

  • My ipod all of a sudden blacked out and now it only shows the apple icon. When i press the on/off or home button it still remains with the apple icon. I tried plugging it to my lap top and going to i tunes but it says there is an error in the device

I was looking through my pictures and when i tapped to see a specific one my ipod blacked out. Now the screen only shows the apple icon and I cant go anywhere. I tried preshing the on/off and home button but it won't work. I even pressed both at the same time for 10 seconds and still nothing... I connected it to my lap top and went to my itunes account but it tells me that the device that i just plugged in has an error. I already tried plugging it back in several times and it still won't work. I don't know what else to do. I havn't had it for a whole year yet so its still insured to the apple company right? at least thats what I heard

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If it never worked after the screen replacement then it would appear that you have a hardware problem either caused by the repair or the problem that lead to the screen replacement.

  • IPad home button issue. Nothing is working.

So I have had my iPad2 since December, and have had no issues until recently. A few days ago, the home button became slow to respond, and within minutes stopped worked altogether. I looked online for an answer, and one solution was to restore the device through iTunes. I did this and was happy to see that it was working again.
Today, it just stopped working again. I don't want to restore it again if it is only going quite working again. The button isn't working at all, so I can't do a hard reset. I have tried syncing it, shutting it down, and nothing is working. So far, apple support hasn't helped. I'm hoping somebody as a simpler, longer lasting solution for it. I don't think it is hardware since the restore fixed the issues before, so I was hoping to fix it myself before I go the route of repair.
    Thanks for any help.

Apple does not repair iPads, they replace them. Take it to the location where you purchased it and have it replaced under the warranty.

  • Anyone else having issues with white iphone4 home button?

so i have come across this stuff here and there but i am pointing more towards people from India..
You all know how Pathetic apple is at India because of not having major share holding...
My White iPhone 4 purchased in july on the same date as launch in India has issues with the home button.. It sometimes becomes unresponsive.. Stays like that for 5-15 seconds as it varies and then starts working..
I don't understand if it is hardware or software issue.. Sometimes for weeks it doesn't happen and then it could happen way too much... i went to the iStore guys and they told me to restore it as its a software issue..
I wanted to know if any of you faced that and what did you do? did you get a replacement? since it happens occasionally i cant show the store guys that it is happening so they won't replace.

    My experience with home button:
Mine did not work sometimes also; but I found this was due to "how" i was pressing the button. There must have been some dust under it because if you pressed it in a certain place; the button would press in but this would not register until you pressed really quite hard.
Pressing in any other place and the click seemed to register.
Try it and see if it is the same for you? Can you press your button in a place and it doesnt register (mine was at the top of the white square on the button)...
I had mine replaced under warranty from my Apple Store.

  • What is going on with the Iphone4 home button.  I see lots of people having issues, but not resolution.  I am running 4.2, but based on what I have read, 4.3 does not help.  Apple has to do something about this, as it is affecting lots of people.

No they do not and no it is not affecting a large portion of the user community.
If it is an actual hardware issue, the only fix is to repair or replace the hardware.
If it is a software issue, restoring as new will fix it.
