Hardware : learn SCSI RAC @ Home

Hi Everyone,
First: I dont want to use vmware - i want to build a real hardware rac.
Second: I dont want to use Firewire - i want to build a rac with SCSI :o)
my problem is that i have no special cluster hardware knowledge.
i know i need a shared disk (scsi) and i need a second private network link for hearbeats.
the network link is no problem,
but im not sure what hardware for the shared disk i have to use.
my idea is:
PCI SCSI 160 (ie any Adaptec) Card with external Interface in every Computer and to use a external scsi disk as shared storage.
is this correct or are there special requirements on scsi controller and external scsi disk?
keep in mind: im a student with only a little money - therefore it has to be a cheap sollution.
Another topic is the software - i will try RAC on 10g R2 on Win2003 or Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9 - any special hints?
Thanks for any Help
Greetings from Hamburg
Andreas

Nothing new under the SUN here.
What you will require is two SCSI HBA's that should be a differential SCSI these days everything is practically LVD (Low Voltage Differential). Be sure you don't use a RAID controller because if you do you need to find out if they are so called "cluster" aware. You don't need nor want hardware RAID in this situation, let Oracle take care of that.
You do need to set the scsi-id on the scsi adapters differently from each other. Default they are on scsi ID 7. Then all you need is a simple casing for an external harddrive (or more expensive for external harddrives) and you are off. You can also use some elbow grease and don't bother about the harddisk enclosure and just wire up an extra powersupply for your external drives (externally of course) and connect those to your drive(s) and run an internal standard scsi cable between them. I do agree that that's really dodgy but for an @home solution a great deal of fun.
I run Oracle on two SUN 420R's with two D1000 SCSI enclosures between them and it's just great works really well for home experiment.
But if you want production ready environment than the idea of shared SCSI is not the way to go, in that case let your boss dig in his pockets for a change and let him flick out 20g and you have a very nice SAN based storage solution filled with FC-SAS disks and if he's willing to be more he can have FC-disks.

  • To learn Oracle RAC

    Hi All,
I m interested in learning Oracle RAC. I have two windows machine. First I want to learn RAC concepts theoritically and then go for practical experience.
Please suggest me step by step procedure to do so.
In addition of Oracle documents,is there any whitepapers for RAC.

    <p>Hi -</p>
<p>There are tons of resources available to "learn Oracle RAC." OTN is one of your best resources. Dig around the documentation link on the OTN home page. I would suggest you start with the 2-Day DBA doc/tutorial. That should whet your appetite</p>

  • Hardware required for RAC setup at home

    Hi All,
Could you please suggest the Hardware required for practicing RAC at home.
    Regards,
    VN

    Hi, "user7202581",
For practicing purposes, you could consider a VBox / OVM based setup at home. We have used those for Hands On Labs in the course of Oracle Open World more than once. I recommend you use a machine with at least 8GB memory and dual core (HT enabled) processors. Some configuration examples: Lenovo Laptop, ThinkPad, 8GB, 320GB HDD, i5 dual core, 2.5 GHz, Win 7 or a Mac Mini, latest version, i5 dual core, 2.3GHz and 8GB memory would do the trick for a two node cluster. Note that I mention the hosting OS in case you use VBox. For OVM based setups you either have to use a dual boot system or use a dedicated machine. You will be somewhat restricted with respect to the hardware failures you can impose on this system obviously (due to the VM setup), but for practicing purposes, you should find those environments sufficient, I think. Also see: RAC on OVM templates: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/rac-template-11grel2-166623.html
    Hope that helps. Thanks,

  • Learning xi at home -- hardware, software, miniSAP?

I am an SAP newbie, working on XI Technology certification,
    (recently completed BIT400).
I do not have access to an SAP system, and am looking for a
way to do some sort of home setup that will at least be
enough to look at the various xi screens.
    Here are my questions --
    1. Can I somehow install xi that will hook up to a minisap
       instance?
My current understanding of minisap(haven't purchased it yet)
is that it will allow me to set up a small footprint instance
of SAP WEB AS so that I can look at Basis screens.
    2. Assuming I have two or more servers at my disposal, what
do I need to install to get a marginally working instance
of xi ---  and where can I find it?
    3. Does SAP provide some sort of short-term (maybe 90 day)
license so that I as an individual can work on learning
       this technology?

    Hi!!!
As far as I know (this info may not be up to date) it could be difficult to have a such test system at home just for evaluation purpose: you can't download XI from http://service.sap.com/swdc, SAP sends XI on discs to its customers and partners. So I suppose that your company should order it at SAP.
You wrote that you took part in BIT400 training course. Well, when I was attending to this course last year, we were working with XI 2.0.
If you are going to pass XI 3.0 certification, you should rather take TBIT40/TBIT44 training courses and 3 e-learnings: TBIT41/42/43.

  • Your Hardware configuration for RAC.

    Hi,
What would be the best hardware solution for your regarding RAC? or put in another way, what hardware configuraton you are using for your RAC?
    regards,

    hi
As good as you could provide for your RAC. RAC could be built on simple
P IV machines having a shared storage and two NICs with 100Mb speed connected via low speed network.
If i would be using a 2 node RAC, i would use two 64-bit server class machines with 4G RAM each, high speed shared storage, and Nodes connected through GB speed NICs with fiber optics.
It would really give me a lot of satisfaction.

  • Hardware for ORACLE RAC.

    hi
my company decided to migrate from Oracle Single instance to Oracle RAC . now we have to choice a hardware for it . I want to know which hardware is better for mid-size oracle rac database ? HP4300 (lefthand ) or EVA 4400 . the first one is cheaper and support 10g switches but the second one just support Fibre Channel .
by the way , i want to know that does HP P4300 support oracle rac database ?
    thx in adv.

    hi
basically every machine can run Oracle RAC. It's a matter of tuning how well it performs.
Also operating systems implies some issues and demands.
The main HW issue with RAC is shared storage, so if you use disk array that can work with all RAC nodes, you're OK.
You can configure it on direct connections (SAS) or network (iSCSI) or fiber channels. With or w/o redundancy.
    Go for it.
Ask also the HP consultant for more details and opinions how they view the specific HW from database point of view.

  • Hardware architecture for RAC

    Hi,
I want to secure my 10g DB for high availability. It looks like RAC with 2 servers (instances) is the best option (?). Can someone tell me what is the best hardware architecture to use (Windows Servers). Is a SAN mandatory or can I just use a NAS. I understand how RAC works but I am just lost with the hardware.
    Thanks !
    Alex

    http://www.fast-track.cc/teas_ft_rac28.htm
No 64 bit windoze, no NAS.That's a pretty old link. You can use NAS with RAC now, but it better be a high end system, like a NetApp. Of course, at that point, why not just use the fibre connections to the NA. shrug
As far as 64 bit windows, you can run 10gR2 RAC on Windows 2003 64 bit.
To the original poster, what's fueling your decision for RAC? Is your high availability need truly 24x7, or just low downtime? Just curious, as RAC can be more of a liability than an asset at times, especially for those that are not as experienced with it.
For hardware...don't go Itanium 2...those things are just baaaad news, especially with RAC. I guess it all depends on the amount of horsepower you need. Are you using Standard Edition? If so, you wont be able to go above two servers. If not, what is your budget? Remember that while RAC is touted for scalability, you shouldn't make your server too too small, or you may end up in a max-CPU headache.
Sorry, no other ideas on hardware, but wanted to clear up any misunderstandings about RAC on Winders.

  • No hardware buttons working (bar home button)

    2010 iPod Touch
My lock button will not lock my device (nothing happens), and the hardware volume buttons also do not respond. The home button works fine though and am having no further problems. Just noticed this today.
I can't reboot either (for obvious reasons as the wake button is dead) so i will have to bleed the battery.
Anyone know of a fix or similar problems? Sorry if i have over sighted any previous threads in advance.
    Cheers

One of the various problems I'm having with iOS 5.0.1 is my home button is basically dead right now. My lock & volume buttons work fine... for now. I haven't heard of any permanent/temporary fixes so far. All I can say is wait for apple to release another update that will most likely cause us further problems. Or call apple. That's what I'm doing tomorrow

  • Where can I learn about RAC with APEX .... or APEX architecture?

    Hi All,
We are desiring to use RAC w/10g and run several APEX applications.
RAC runs different instances of the same Database so I need to know if there would be a problem with the session information.
    Thank you, BillC

    Bill,
I believe that the reason you don't see much on this topic is because it is very architecturally simple. For me, at least, this is a good thing. You can contact me here:
    http://concept2completion.net/c2/f?p=9876:20
if you want some details, but I think what you are looking for can be summed up fairly simply.
First, let's assume now Webcache because I think Webcache is very unusual for an Apex application.
You don't need to cluster any of the mid-tier components. Just put a load balancer in front of your App Servers. You will get a slight improvement if you have the load balancer perform a sticky session (that is, it will route the same user to the same App Server for subsequent requests). The reason for this is that if the user is routed to the same App Server it is likely to get the same database session it had previously, and will likely be on the same RAC node.
Configure your Apex DADs (typically one per App Server) to utilize as many RAC nodes as you like. Generally this would be all of your RAC nodes, but that is not necessary. Your DBA will probably know how to do this for the effect you want (balancing, failover, etc.).
So, what happens through a request. This is dependent a little on if you let the Apex engine handle session mgt. Generally you do, so we will assume that Apex is setting a cookie and handling the checks. My order might be slightly off... The "Apex Engine" refers to activities that Apex does inside the database.
    1. The user requests a page.
    2. The App Server passes the request along with any cookie information, header info, etc. to mod_plsql, which has a session pool connected to the database instance(s).
2a. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe that if the user has already used a session from that session pool, mod_plsql will try to reuse that same session which is already connected to a database instance. I think this will cause the user to be connected to the same instance that he was in previously (if this is not the first call).
    3. The Apex engine (inside the database) checks for the existence of a cookie and a session id that match a record in the session table.
3a. If no match is found it will create a record and set the cookie and session id in your browser.
    4. The Apex engine sets up environment variables (nls_lang, apex_user, etc.) and accesses any user session info (in a session info table)
5a. If a submit, the Apex engine processes the page and, via the App Server, returns a page moved response indicating what page for the browser to branch to (see 5b)
5b. If a get, the Apex engine creates a page within the db and passes the generated html back through the App Server to the browser.
As you can see, the App Server does not do much. It is just a conduit between the browser and the database.
If you want to add Webcache to the mix, you have to tell Webcache to cache the pages generated by Apex. Webcache will generally cache based upon a url, and generally does not cache posts (page submits) but only gets (links). As your links will have a session ID in them (and you will have a unique cookie value), Webcache will only provide a cached response to the user if the user has already visited that page within that session (with precisely the same URL). This can be great, if you have a page that does not change much, but it can be a nightmare if either the data in the database changes (and you want the change reflected) on the page, or if you have some other process that should cause the page to change (e.g. if you set some search criteria in a process, not in the url and the report where clause should change). In either case, if Webcache responds, it never calls the db to regenerate the page, you just get the exact data on the page. The way around this is to have the database issue an invalidation to Webcache whenever either of these cases occur. As you can see, this can be a lot of work. It's a lot to just type up the description of it! The only cases where it makes a lot of sense is when you have a lot of content that does not change on a few pages or really big content (e.g. documents, images) that you will download more than once in a session.
I hope this helps. Drop me a note if you want more details.

  • Trying to reach Lenovo support for urgent hardware repairs; is anyone home?

I have a warranty on my Thinkpad T530 that includes next-day, on-site support. I have been trying to contact Lenovo about getting my failing hard drive replaced (also need a USB port and DELETE key replacement), but I've been unable to get through.
I don't have access to a phone right now, so I have been trying to place a support request online. Lenovo's chat support said no representatives were available. I've tried twice to submit an electronic support request through the IBM website, and both requests were mysteriously canceled.
Can someone please help? Any support people on this forum? Thanks!

    Hello toiletresin,
Has the issue with your ThinkPad T530 been resolved?
If not, could you send me a private message including...
    Your first and last name
Phone number where you can be contacted, if available
Email address where you can be contacted
Full address of where the machine is located (for onsite service)
The Machine Type, Model, and Serial Number of your T530
A complete description of the problem(s) to be resolved
If you can send me this information, I will work to have our contact center process your service request and get someone out to repair your machine.
I'm sorry it's taken this long for someone at Lenovo to respond to your post, but these forums are not typcially monitored by Lenovo personnel. They are intended for peer-to-peer support.

  • Hardware for Skype Desktop / Home

Have a skype phone number and have been using it very successfully with at old GE Thompson GE 28310EE1 router and 4 GE Phones.  The phones are now acting up and not holding charges or connecting.  I never really like the phones anyway.
I just got a Panasonic KX-PRL262 / KX-PRD262 Link to Cell / Blue-tooth to link to my two cell phones, Love it so far.  I eventually will want 4 or 5 Panasonic Cordless DECT sets, which it will accomadate.  Note:  It has a jack for existing POTS or analog phones, which I do not have.
What I would like to do is configure a way to add or link my skype number to the Panasonic KX-PRL262 / KX-PRD262.  I have not been able to find any information on that.  I have tried running a line from the GE Thompson 28310EE1 router to the KX-PRL262, but it doesn't seem to be recognized.
Anyone know if this is possible to link the KX-PRL262 with my GE router?  Or is there another piece of hardware that could?
My house is wired for a analog phone.  Anyway to use that system, perhaps with some  hardware to link into the Panasonic KP-PRL262?
    Thanks

There is only one "Skype Translator" app: It's a full screen app following the Windows modern design pattern. So it looks very similar to "Skype for modern Windows" (also referred to as "Metro").
There is no "Skype Translator for Windows desktop" app which would be providing the Translator functionality via the classic Windows desktop app.

  • Modifying retired server hardware for home use

So due to the death of Server 2003 I had to retire quite a few servers in the last year for the company I work for. I decided to adopt all this otherwise discarded hardware and take it home with the goal of creating one sweet media server (and who knows what else down the road). Most of the servers were late Dell PowerEdge 2900/2950 systems but one was a PowerEdge R710.My goal is to make two servers essentially. One will befor a different purpose which will be straight forward and based on one of the PowerEdge 2900s.The other will be media/whatever home server running on the R710.So I have a huge pile of 600GB 15k RPM SAS drives which are awesome drives. However the R710 only has six 3.5 bays. I have A LOT more data than that, and a lot more hard drives than that available here.I don't want to go out and spend a ton of money on...

Instead of buying those modules, save yourself a ton of money and buy the twinax. It has the SFP's and the cable together as one piece.

You can purchase a 10gb card for your server, just make sure the server supports the host interface of the card (eg PCI-Express x8).

  • Hardware requirement for running exchange 2010 on vmware workstation

Dear Team,I need to create a exchange 2010 sp2 on a guest os on vmware workstation.kindly help me out with the physical hardware requirements for a home user

    Hey Mukund26,
Before I answer your questions, my suggestion would be for you to figure out exactly what you want to get out of running that Exchange lab.  Are you trying to learn Exchange features like DAGs?  Are you trying to learn about virtualizing Exchange?  When you figure that out you'll be better able to answer question 1 since you may not need all of those virtual machines.
Here are my thoughts on your questions.
    1) It is probably technically possible to run 10 virtual machines on the configuration you have but you're going to have pretty bad performance. I would try to trim that down to only the virutal machines that you really need in order to use the lab how you want to use it.  Here are some questions that may help you figure out what you need:
Why do you need two domain controllers?  I don't think you need to worry as much about redundancy in your lab.
Why do you need 2 ESXi hosts and a vCenter?  What purpose do they serve in this configuration?  Are you trying to run the Exchange VMs nested under the ESXi VMs?  If so, why?
Is there a reason why you want to separate out HTS/CAS from MBX in your lab?   Combining all roles together can reduce the number of VMs you need.  If you separate out the roles you'll need to allocate a lot of RAM to support all of those Exchange VMs.
    2)  Running a lot of virtual machines on a single 1TB SATA disk, especially a 5400 RPM disk, is going to be slow.  It'll be especially painful when the VMs are booting up, rebooting, shutting down, etc..  Try to stagger the power on operations so they don't all boot at once.  For example, first boot your DCs, then boot your HTS/CAS, then your MBX, etc.   There is no doubt that configuration will be slow, so if you can get your hands on an solid state drive with enough space you'll have significantly better performance.  For the purposes of a lab, though, it is probably ok if you can be patient.
    3) I think the i5 processor will be just fine for this lab.  Usually in a lab setting CPU performance isn't the most important thing so similar to above as long as you can be a little patient I think that CPU will suit you just fine.
As I said figure out what you want to get out of the lab and then you can determine how many VMs you need and whether or not you want to upgrade hardware.  If you're looking to learn about Exchange 2010 in general I would suggest using multirole servers, getting rid of one of the DCs, and not worrying about virtualizing ESX/vCenter so that you can learn.  If you're looking to learn about virtualizing Exchange 2010 on vSphere then let's figure out exactly what you want to get out of it and figure out what you can learn using VMware Workstation and what you really need vSphere for.
    Best of luck!
    Matt
