[Hardware] MBP 13" Mid2010: Wireless card turning off when computer is moved

Hello everyone !
I have been incrementally fixing my mid-2010 (1278) 13" Macbook Pro for the past 8-9 months. I'm almost done, but sadly I can't figure out what's causing the last issue, which concerns the wireless, and I would *really* appreciate your expertise!
Background: My MBP sustained heavy damage last December. The casing was carved in and the hardware was so busted it could not power on. Apple replaced the logic board, bottom and top cases. I also replaced the hard drive and reinstalled the OS as new. I then  cleared all but one of the  remaining problems including a faulty left palm rest temperature sensor (fault caused by loose battery electric tape contacting with the sensor).
Symptoms: It first starts with an immediate loss of the wireless internet and network connections: all websites are unresolved. A few seconds later the list of available wifi networks in Network preferences is being reduced to the one I was last connected to while still searching for new networks. Apps requiring internet connectivity start to report, well, the lack of connectivity. A few seconds later the MBP wireless is still displayed as connected to the last known network, except that it really is not connected to anything as per pings. At this stage, going into Network Preferences show the Wifi as "Off". Pressing "Turn Wifi-On" does not do anything, turning on en1 with the terminal does not do anything either. At some point the wifi icon is updated and shows the wifi as being "Off" too.
Temporary and only fix: Restart the computer.
How to reproduce: When the laptop is lifted or moved, such as when you relocate from the desk to a couch. Having the computer on my lap triggers the issue too.
What I did so far: I assumed there could be a problem directly with my airport card, so I replaced it. The wireless was working fine up until I reproduced the steps above, triggering the same issue.
It is definitely a hardware problem, but what could be causing it now that the airport card is replaced?
Thank you very much for your help !

Kahss

  • Media keys won't turn off when computer shuts down

I've been experiencing a problem with the media keys on my P305-S8834 laptop running vista 64.  The computer will shut down completely, but the media key lights remain on.  They will go off when I start and shut down the computer a couple of times.  This problem is recent.  Up to about two weeks ago the shutdown was normal.  Appreciate any help with this.

Media key problems like that are sometimes solved by resetting the motherboard.
With the battery and AC adapter removed, close the Power switch for 30 seconds.
Re-attach those, press the Power button to turn the computer on, and then immediately press the F2 key while the Toshiba logo is displayed. Press F9 to restore the BIOS default settings, press F10, and then select Yes (Exit Saving Changes). The computer will restart.

  • Airport Card turned off when resuming from sleep - New since 10.6.6

I use safe sleep regularly, as I use my laptop at both work and home. Ever since the update to 10.6.6 though, I have had to manually turn my Airport connection back on after resuming from sleep.
Previously, although it was unreliable about connecting to a preferred network (an unrelated, but equally frustrating issue*) at least it would remain on. Now I've had to add the icon to my Menu bar just so I don't have to dig into System Preferences every single time I reawaken my laptop.
Does anyone know why this is happening, and if there is anything I can do to prevent it? I apologize if this has been asked before, but when I searched I was unable to find anything.
*This issue is unrelated and not the focus of my post, but if you happen to know about it I would absolutely appreciate your input.
When resuming from sleep, despite being between 5-20 feet from my preferred router I will often receive a dialog asking me to select from a list of SSIDs and enter a password even though that information is already saved. Then, once I complete this information Airport doesn't actually connect and the only way to resolve the issue is to turn Airport off and then back on. After this, it will automatically connect with no problems and remain connected until I put the computer into Sleep mode again.

Maybe check in your keychain and verify the password saved is correct for your wireless router?
Do you broadcast the network name?
Could you describe "unreliable about connecting to a preferred network"?
Is "use secure virtual memory" checked in the Security preference pane? If so try unchecking that maybe? If it's a hibernation issue sometimes that could cause weirdness.

  • Turns off when it is moved!!! HELP!

I just bought a zen extra 30g and it locked up! I returned it to the store and they didn't have another in stock so they gave me a 40g at no extra charge. I thought I was getting a real deal until I put it on my hip today at work and everytime I took a step it would shut down and restart. I know it is a hard dri've and you can't shake it but I can't even walk with it on my belt without it doing this.
I need to know if this is a defect or normal or what? I was so excited about getting this and I thought I had researched pretty good. I was going to get an ipod when I saw the problems and then I saw good reviews on creative.
    Thanks!!!

  • This past month I have been having problems connecting to my home wireless connection. Previously I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried unplugging the wireless router, turning off the wirless airport, deleting the network name from my list of server

This past month I have been having problems connecting to my home wireless connection. I have a MacBook Pro OSX Version 10.6.8. Previously I had no problems whatsoever. I have tried unplugging the wireless router, turning off the wirless airport, deleting the network name from my list of servers and trying to reconnect this way. These methods have worked temporarily, but the same problem keeps coming back. Most of the time my personal wireless connection does not even come up among the list of available networks. My fellow flatmates have PCs and both of them are able to connect to the network without problem.
The router is a d-link model DIR-615. I am not tech savy, so if any other information need to be provided in order to better understand my situation, please let me know.
    Please help me!

If I open the list of networks in a window it says "connection timeout," but if I just select it from the drop down it tries for awhile and then stops with no prompt. When I try to run network diagnostics it says "sorry, we can't connect to the internet" (or some solution-free variation of that)

  • M276nw wireless radio turns off

Every day after work, my brand-new M276nw's wireless radio turns off. The blue wireless light blinks, and the printer needs to be restarted for it to work again. All ecoSMART settings are turned off, and otherwise everything seems to be fine.

Sarten, sounds like you are having some issues with your printer and your network. Have you tried re-running the wireless setup wizared and then applying a static/manual IP address? Here is an informational video on the basics of how to do this.

  • Power & Wireless LEDs turn off on WRT54GX2

Over the past week, this has happened 6 times: the power and wireless LEDs turn off, the ethernet(1) and internet LEDs flicker like mad.  While it's like that, all LAN and WAN traffic is disabled.  It is connected to a DSL modem and the LEDs there appear normal.  If I cycle power on the router, it returns to normal.  I have not yet connected this behavior to any special events on my LAN.  Does anyone have a suggestion?

You should Upgrade your router's firmware...
    Download Firmware 3.70 MB...Firmware Ver.1.01.22...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
    Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • My computer turning off when plugging in my iphone??? Why..

Can anybody help me out here? My iphone completely turns off my computer does anybody have that problem and if so how do you fix it?
    R/S

    Marine78,
Have you added any card to your computer, or replaced any hardware? What power supply do you have?
A PC may shut down when something draws additional power if either the USB port is not connected correctly, or if the power supply is already overloaded and trips its own circuit breaker.
If it is restarting, and not powering completely off, do you happen to have a Logitech Webcam installed or previously installed? If so go to Logitech's website and download the latest version of their software. Many Windows XP or Vista computers will automatically restart if they get a blue screen. You could be getting a blue screen because of a software conflict with another device. This is discussed in this knowledge base article:

    Hope this helps,

  • Modem Setup Says Airport is Turned Off When It's Turned On

I'm trying to set up a new modem/wireless account using Motorola 2247-N8. During the se- up phase it keeps telling me that the AirPort is turned off, when in fact it's turned on and can pick up many wireless networks in my vacinity. This problem keeps kicking me out of the set up phase so I can't even set up the new network. I go into System Prefrences>Networks and the AirPort is there with a green light. What is the problem?

If your MacBook (MB) is able to "see" and connect to other Wi-Fi networks then chances are the AirPort card built-in the MB is not the issue.
By default, your Motorola Netopia gateway device has a local (LAN-side) router IP address of: 192.168.1.254. Your MB will need to be on this local network in order for it to find it. This may require that you temporarily reset your MB to using an IP address, like 192.168.1.100. You can do this via System Preferences > Network > AirPort. Easier still I would recommend that you temporarily connect the MB to the Motorola using an Ethernet cable. The Motorola should assign the MB the proper IP address and you should now be able to access the Motorola's web-based administrator interface.

  • How to safely turn off the computer while the motion servo is still enabled?

When we use PCI-7344 and set it for serve closed control, I have found a very serious problem
in using the control card in this mode.
As the card is able to control motors only with the computer at power on status, but if we are very
carelessly to shut down the computer and without the notice to turn off motor driver power first
we would always get serious sudden moves of the motors, and might cause damages to the system. The same situation also applies to when control the motors under open/closed loop stepper mode.
How should I do to prevent the above situation?
(note: in my system, we have hook up relays and timers if we could set DIO bits before shut down
    the computer. But
still, there are a certain occassions that the operator would still forget to set the DIO bits
and turn off the computer directly)

The Inhibit output pin of the motion controller (also called drive enable) is the best way to achieve this. It is basically a signal that most power drives take in as an active low input so that when the powergoes out of the computer, the line goes low and immediately kills the axis so that no servo ouptut command affects the motor.

  • Macbook works fine when plugged in, turns off when unplugged.

    Hello all,
As stated my 2008 Unibody 13 inch, serial number W8******1AX turns on and works fine when it is connected to power.
When it is unplugged it instantly turns off and turns its fans on full until it depletes the battery (so it is obviously getting power.. just not where I want it)
Since the problem began I have tried two new batteries, neither of which had any different symptoms.
Before this, the computer had an intermittent life, it would turn off when it saw fit, which got progressively worse.
I have followed the guides to resetting the SMC but have had no luck
I have been running it without the battery (to save it charging and discharging for no reason) and sometimes when plugged in without a battery
the magsafe green indicator light goes from dim to bright.
With the battery installed it stays bright orange until it is charged and then switches to bright green.
(I have tried it with another charger, same symptoms)

There may be a hardware cause behind the symptoms you cite, so a diagnostic
is recommended to see which parts are weak or failed in the computer. A visit to
an Apple Store with Genius bar may be helpful, as they can perform testing there.
A call ahead or use their web page, to schedule an appointment, is advised.
In the US and Canada, the Genius bar at a retail Apple Store can perform
a diagnostic service, for no fee, even on Apple products without AppleCare.

work should be able to handle an out-of-warranty older Mac, within age limits...
Ones too old for the Apple Store could be serviced at a Specialist, instead.

Also another item, other than keeping the magnetic connections clean of
debris, grime, and corrosion, is to check the MagSafe Board or have it
checked as part of a greater diagnostic. This board is behind the port
that supplies the computer and the battery with power from the adapter.
When it partially fails or if/when one of the connecting wires or plug fails
you can find odd issues or partial use. The battery may charge but it
may not be able to power the computer, and other odd effects.
    https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook
In older portable Macs, this was generally called a 'DC-in board' and as
such, you could read about it in an iFixit repair guide for the MacBook
model you have. These vary so the matching article is recommended to
see if that is something you may want to try. But I would have diagnostic
testing done and avoid additional damages from attempted DIY efforts.
There have been a few reports of other failure on the logic board that
contributes to a partial failure of the charging system, so about all this
may do is troubleshoot around the failure without finding an exact cause.
    However it goes...
    Good luck & happy computing!
