Hardware question for new guy (you got to start somewhere)

Hi,
As the title states I am a complete novice so please bare with me. I'm confused about the correct configuration of the equipment that I have. So I'll start with what i have:
Live 4 vocal harmonizer,
Mackie 1202 VLZ3 mixer
M Audio Profire 610 Firewire Interface
New iMac Computer w/ Garageband & Logic
Adam A7 Monitors
The Profire 610 is new and I'm not sure how it works into the mix. Currently, I have my guitars and microphone going into the vocalizer. Out from the vocalizer and into the mixer. Out from the mixer to the monitors. I know the 610 should be connected to the computer via the firewire cable. What I am unclear about is where it fits in the above mix. It makes sense to me that it would come last to allow any effects/control to be recorded by the computer. Is that right? If so, this would mean that I would go out from the mixer and into the 610 interface? If this is the case, I would disconnect the XLR cables going into my monitors and insert them into the interface, and then buy 1/4 in to XLR cables to go from the line output of the interface back to the monitors. Does all that sound right?
Also, I have a slight hum coming from the monitors at higher volumes. Is that normal or is there a way to reduce/eliminate that?
Thanks so much for your help, I hope to be much more adept at this in the coming months.
Thanks again,
Charlie

For the hum, I would suggest unplugging the speakers first (take the cable out of the speaker and not the mixer). Turn up the volume- is the hum still there? If so, you power may be an issue- you might want to invest in a power line filter. If not, then plug the speakers into the mixer- do you get the hum? If so, make sure that you don't have all the 12 channels cranked up (zero everything and start going through each channel to see if you get the hum- it could be a bad slider/pot or a power issue on the mixer). Keep going through each piece until you find the culprit.

  • SOME SIMPLE QUESTIONS FOR ALL OF YOU

    hi,
    I have some questions for all of you.
    1. Oracle uses cgi (even asp!!! I've seen an asp page somewhere on an Oracle's site but this moment I don't remember where perhaps it is asp->cgi). Why ?
    Oracle doesn't support their techologies
    (Pl/SQL, Jsevlets,XML) ?
    2. Oracle says that has just released a
    new product for mobiles called "Portal2Go".
    I tried to install this product on NT with OAS 4.8.1.
    I had many problems during the installation and after many tries finally I did it(thanks God). but the problems continue...
    many Jsp errors (from the "tested" supplied apps). My question is:
    a. This product is in an early stage (many installation errors.. just a baby) and I think is stable for Sun Solaris but not on NT.
    b. You Oracle "experts" (i.e. oracle staff, NOT YOU guys) tell me ONE advantage to use you product (I'm an oracle developer for 6 years now):
    You say that I can PORT my existing app in any device and Web (through XML). This is a joke. Mobiles,PalmPCs,Web etc. have different requirements (content,display etc).The scope is different.. so this is absolutely FALSE (to use a boolean).
    This release is user unfrienlty. Why.. tell me WHY to pay for a product and for extra hardware (read the product technical reqs!!) to do the SAME THINK
    I do NOW with existing sources.
    I've developed an app for my company's employees using existing version of DB (8.0.5),pure pl/sql and a WAP GATEWAY.NOTHING LESS NOTHING MORE.
    please answer. Any comment welcomed...
    maybe I'm wrong maybe I'm not.
    PS.WHERE THE WAP GATEWAY/SERVER IS. I searced the cd and..nothing :-) ?
    thanks
    thanasis j.a.

    Portal-to-Go is a wireless portal server, the first version was released November 1999.
    The problems you describe that mobiles, Palm devices, etc all have different characteristics is one of the key reasons for Portal-to-Go. It allows any service to be displayed on any device by generating content in an appropriate format for specific devices. This way you can take into consideration the size of the screen, the display characteristics, etc.
    It is 'stable' on Solaris and NT, though it is true that the installation procedure of the CD is for Solaris only. The product is not currently available on OTN, so the installer restrictions should have been explained to you when you obtained the CD.
    Why Portal-to-Go? Here's three reasons:
    1. Inherent problems of the User Interface for a wireless device, so we provide a way personalise the UI to improve navigation and allow commonly used parameters to be saved as stored preferences through the portal.
    2. Differences in the characteristics between wireless devices make it hard to support all type without re-creating content and applications for each specific case. With Portal-to-Go, the same service can be accessed from any device.
    3. Lack of content available for WAP and other wireless devices. We have tools to quickly create wireless services from existing Web sites as well as an application platform for creating new Java or database applications for wireless devices.
    You are correct that the product does not have a WAP gateway.
    I'm not sure where you are located, but feel free to contact me offline. I can answer any specific questions, or get you contact with a local Oracle representative.
    At the moment, if anyone wants to obtain a copy of Portal-to-Go, you should contact your local Oracle representatives.

    First of all, uninstall it with the uninstaller.
    Then:
    Install the ENGLISH version.
    Change the language in the CC app to Korean.
    Install the Korean version. (DON't uninstall the English version)
    Change back the langauge in the CC app to English.
    When your OS is running in English, InDesign will run in English with Korean functionality added, if your OS is running in Korean it will take the Korean User Interface, so let your OS run in English.
    Every installer language will add needed plugins for the work with that language. E.g. If I install Hebrew, I get RTL functionality in German version, only if I would change the OS language it would change the language of InDesign, InDesign takes always as UI language the language of the OS if available, if not (in your case you have uninstalled English before), it takes any version which is available in the order of languages specified in the OS.
    If you need to run your program in a different language than the OS but you have installed it in the language of the OS it becomes more difficult. You would have to use some system tools which are able to force a program to open with a different language. Most of those tools are freeware.

  • Migration Question for New Leopard Mac Mini

    Oh my... I have a new Leopard Mac Mini still in the box!
    I want to connect it up and migrate my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, etc. to it from my old Mac Mini but here's the thing: my old Mac Mini is a G4, powerpc mac has been through a sort of mini **** lately and at this time will need it's hard disk repaired before I will be able to get it back up to 10.4.11 and Safari 3.0.4. that it had had only last week, before all manner of disasters happened after the last security update. Genius bar made it relatively functional by re-installing the OS but they used 10.4.7 and Safari 2.0.4. to do it! So here is my question: Do I need to get my PPC Mac back up to snuff completely before I can migrate stuff from it to the new Leopard Mac Mini or can I do the migration and get everything nice and lovely on the new machine even though there are still problems on the old Mac Mini?
    Here is the problem that the PPC G4 Mac Mini has at this time:
    Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid index key
    The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
    Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
    Would this pose a problem in the migration?
    Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! -Charlotte

    The best thing I can say about your post is that at least you realize that Installing Leopard on a broken Tiger and a G4 processor files is exactly how hundreds of the problems are being caused. Too many people have decided that "Apple Just Works" and figure that installing the newest most complex MacOS ever will just work. These people are getting "worked".
    Good Luck cleaning up your machine to tip-top shape to 10.4.11, with every update for every program you intend to transfer. Your drive must be squeeky clean, or you will have problems that nobody can explain. I'd recommend removing any applications you don't have to have or that you can reinstall easily with a program like App Zapper and get rid of the G4 system files as much as possible.

  • Important hardware items for new pc

    I want to buy a new PC.
    Which PC components are especially important for a fast PC. I use PS CS6 + ACR 7 * for photo editing.
    It is about an affordable PC (about € 800, -) .... not an expensive SUPER-HIGH-END
    I think of eg:
    Intel i5 or i7 .... what type
    What video card? ....
    Which memory + how many 8 ... 12 MB
    Other important things ......
    windows 7 of 8

    Balance is important if you want to make the most of your $800.  Perhaps the Tom's Hardware builds would be a good place to start.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/build-your-own-gaming-pc-core-i5,3708.html
    Except I just looked at the specs and was not altogether convinced, but they did qualify the build as being for Gaming.     Although I actually like 'gaming' focused systems for Photoshop type usage, so long as they use a single GPU.  Something to do with economy of scale, I suspect, but they seem to offer a lot of bang for your buck.
    The $800 system in this list looks a lot better to me
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/build-your-own-pc-overclocking-hardware,3713.html
    Don't worry too much about the thought of over clocking.  So long as your temperatures are kept under control, a sensibly pushed CPU is not going to lose significant lifespan.  And a lot of boards come with software that automatically ups clock speed only when needed.   There are free apps like Speccy that keep an eye on things for you, and MSI Afterburner that will keep the GPU fan ticking over until it is needed.  That last one is a biggy - my computer goes from a bearable hum, to "is there a hovercraft landing outside?" when GPU intensive tasks are performed.
    The great thing about computers is that, being modular, they are so easy to upgrade as and when you can afford it.  So try not to fill all your RAM slots.  8Gb should be considered a minimum, and 12 or 16Gb would be better.  I used to be unconvinced by the need for so much RAM, but having to use my laptop for the last couple of weeks, demonstrated that 16Gb was most definitely OTT.
    Think about adding a spare drive just for Photoshop Scratch, down the road.  Heck I'd give you one of you were local to me.
    Windows 7 or 8????  Hmmmm....    Call me shallow, but I did quite like using Windows 8 on the laptop. although the upgrade to 8.1 caused me some hassle.  Then again, I think I am happier being back on my main system with Windows 7.  It feels cleaner and I don't have to keep flicking between the desktop and Start screens.
    Perhaps the laspt word could be for you to run your short list by us before committing.  I found our NZ equivalent of eBay useful when researching my laptop as you can filter by spec, and shortlist by adding to your Watch list.  Whatever you get, you are going t love it with knobs on.  It's going to feel fresh, snappy, and a pleasure to use.

  • VM hardware specifcations for new SCCM environment

    Hi everyone,
    My company has decided to implement SCCM infrastructure for the first time. We will be running it in VM environment with understanding that if the VM server needs more hardware requirements we will allocate more resources to the VM(s). Our infrastructure
    will support up to 2000 client computers around the campus. Would you guys be able to recommend suitable VM hardware requirements for us to start building the VM environment? Is a separate VM server instance recommended for SQL installation? We probably won't
    be using the reporting feature but it might be something that we will look into in the future. What do you guys think?

    I almost always recommend to run SQL locally on the same box, especially with environments of this size. For a nice guidance on the advised hardware have a look at this article:

  • For New Guys, Simpleton pattern revisited...

    In the March 2004 issue of Java Patterns there is an article called "OO Patterns for Extensive Coding With OverTyping and Generic Exclamations". The article introduces the simpleton pattern, citing a similar pardigm in the C programming world. Using the simpleton pattern the following code,
    * Test.java
    * Created on May 14, 2004, 2:54 PM
    package tmp;
    * @author  awaddi
    public class Test
         private int _pNumberOfFileWritesInt;
         private int _pNumberOfFileReadsInt;
         /** Creates a new instance of Test */
         public Test()
              _pNumberOfFileWritesInt = 0;
         public void write( Object data )
              // write the data
              set_pNumberOfFileWritesInt(  get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt() + 1  );
         public void read( Object data )
              // read the data
              set_pNumberOfFileReadsInt(  get_pNumberOfFileReadsInt() + 1  );
          * Getter for property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
          * @return Value of property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
         public int get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt()
              return _pNumberOfFileWritesInt;
          * Setter for property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
          * @param _pNumberOfFileWritesInt New value of property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
         public void set_pNumberOfFileWritesInt(int _pNumberOfFileWritesInt)
              this._pNumberOfFileWritesInt = _pNumberOfFileWritesInt;
          * Getter for property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
          * @return Value of property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
         public int get_pNumberOfFileReadsInt()
              return _pNumberOfFileReadsInt;
          * Setter for property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
          * @param _pNumberOfFileReadsInt New value of property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
         public void set_pNumberOfFileReadsInt(int _pNumberOfFileReadsInt)
              this._pNumberOfFileReadsInt = _pNumberOfFileReadsInt;
         public static void main(  String[] args  )
              Test aTest = new Test();
              // write twenty lines to a file
              while(  aTest.get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt() < 20  )
                   aTest.write(  "a line"  );
                   System.out.println("Reads: " + aTest.get_pNumberOfFileReadsInt()  );
                   System.out.println("Writes: " + aTest.get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt()  );
              System.out.println("Done!");
              System.exit( 0 );
    }could be replaced using the Simpleton Pattern. Though the article was complex, I believe it raised some salient points, particularly in regard to many current idioms that new programmers are faced with. While the above code example demonstrates several principles that are important for new programmers to adhere to, a la "Ultimate Java Coding Style and Superb Idioms for Defensive Programming", the Simpleton Pattern utilises a different approach:
    class ReadWriteCounter
         public int reads = 0;
         public int writes = 0;
         public void write( Object data )
              // write the data
              writes++;
         public void read( Object data )
              // read the data
              reads++;
         public static void main(  String[] args  )
              ReadWriteCounter counter = new ReadWriteCounter();
              // write twenty lines to a file
              while(  counter.writes < 20  )
                   counter.write(  "a line"  );
                   System.out.println("Reads: " + counter.reads  );
                   System.out.println("Writes: " + counter.writes  );
              System.out.println("Done!");
              System.exit( 0 );
    }While the Simpleton pattern is useful, it has some disadvantages:
    When you sell your programmes, other programmers will be able to modify the internal state of your classes.
    Synchronisation of variable access can only be achieved by using volatile members, this is inherently error-prone as volatile variables are often guaranteed to provide semi-deterministic member access and may change the values of variables in common circumstances (never use the volatile keyword, it is dangerous).
    The use of C-like structs is likely to cause many programming errors, contrary to popular belief, int[] z; (z[0]+4) = 22; will not assign the value of 22 to the second item in the z array. Java uses object references, NOT ADDRESS POINTERS.
    So when is the Simpleton pattern a bad thing? In years of Java programming I have found that in 99% of the cases the Simpleton pattern is all that is needed, however, when referring to references of Objects that are shared between classes, the normal getter/setter is really useful. Consider:
    class ResultCode
         String value;
         public ResultCode( String s )
              value = s;
    class FileOperationA
         ResultCode code;
         public FileOperationA(  ResultCode c  )
              code = c;
         public void someOp()
              System.out.println("code:" + code.value );
    class FileOperationB
         ResultCode code;
         public FileOperationB(  ResultCode c  )
              code = c;
         public void someOp()
              System.out.println("code:" + code.value );
    class DirectoryOne
         FileOperationA a;
         FileOperationB b;
         public DirectoryOne()
              ResultCode c = new ResultCode( "OK" );
              a = new FileOperationA( c );
              b = new FileOperationB( c );
              // a and b share a reference to an underlaying object, not a primitive
         public void changeCodeString()
              a.code = new ResultCode(  "It's all good" ); // replaces OK as the message, but just for a
              // now a and b have different code values, wrong
         public void changeCodeString2()
              a.setCode( "It's all good" ); // replaces OK as the message, for a and b Yay!!
              // now a and b have (still) the same code values, right
    }The getter/setter is necessary because we aren't using primitives in ResultCode, we have a shared reference through a and b that references a reference, and because we want operations through either a or b on a shared ResultCode object to be visible to both "copies" of the object (they aren't copies, its the same object, two referents).
    Its a little complicated, but suffice it say that the jist of the article is to keep it simple unless you are really certain that you need the complexity.
    Andrew

    An object with just behaviour doesn't do much, in the
    case of an object with static methods that modifies
    data passed in via arguments (which, incidentally,
    seems to be the model you are suggesting), the object
    itself is simply a utility grouping and doesn't have
    any state to behave with.
    As I said an OO Object must have data and behavior.
    If it doesn't have data it is not an Object. That is not to say that you can not create code that does that, but rather that it is not an OO Object.
    Most objects have at least two kinds of values,
    internal values that don't compose the behaviour of
    the object, things like loop counters, computation
    constants, or intermediate values; not really data is
    it? There are also values that do compose state, alter
    behaviour, or provide information; things like number
    of logins, name of a data file, etc...Local variables are not Object data. Via the implementation code a java class (for example) might have member variables that are used to achieve some implementation goal yet are not actually part of the Object.
    >
    Then there is the actually interesting stuff, the
    raison d'etre of the object, values that represent the
    output of the object and, actually deserve to be
    called data: total monthly bill, number of available
    routes, installed packages, or whatever.
    Let's say we have three kinds of values; temporary,
    intermediate, and product or, perhaps, transient,
    volatile, and final. It should be pretty clear that
    any client or co-programmer shouldn't be concerned
    with temporary or intermediate data and that it
    shouldn't be exposed, however, it should also be
    pretty clear that the resultant data, or product of an
    object, should be (in fact, as I have been arguing)
    must be exposed, why else have the object in the first
    place?As I already said if most of the classes in the system expose their data then something is wrong with the design.
    DTOs are an excellent example of classes that expose all of their data. Yet in the total system, a single DTO can normally be expected to have 4 or more classes for each DTO. And those classes do not expose their data.
    >
    My arguments also come out against under-exposing the
    intermediate values in an object, certainly within a
    package, exposing data to related co-objects is
    probably not much of a fault, except where it concerns
    someone who says, "Hey, those values in Class Z could
    be modified by Class B!"
    Exposing data is always dangerous for two reasons.
    1. The original developer might not have know what they were doing and thus instead of creating an Object they created something else (like half an Object, or two Objects in one, etc.)
    2. The maintainance programmer might not understand the original design. Exposed data allows them to avoid this lack of knowledge. Thus instead of figuring out that the intent of the design or figuring out that the design must be refactored (after understanding it the first place) they use a kludge that the exposed data allows for.
    Of course, the proper response is, "Hey!! Don't modify
    intermediate values in class Z from Class B!!",
    problem solved. No patterns, programming paradigms, or
    rules of practice (which generally come out as do this
    or perish!) necessary. It is simpler, and because of
    that I would argue that it is faster, less prone to
    error, and more enjoyable for the programmer to work
    with as a result.
    If everyone was a perfect programmer there would be no problems.
    Since they are not, one must use what is available and what is practical to prevent those problems that are likely to occur.
    And given that the intent of most programmers is tomake money with their code (or expose it via the
    public domain) all of those people should learn how to
    write code in terms of other people.
    So exposing data is wrong for most of the people here.Clearly not true just because you said so.
    No not true because you disagree.
    Hard to tell what you are disagreeing with here though. That most developers want to make money and/or acclaim for their work?
    >
    >
    Nothing I have seen so far is even close tosuggesting that your hypothesis is correct. And there
    is at least indirect evidence that it is incorrect.
    This was a rebuttal to your original point that stated
    that 90% of development time was spent refactoring and
    bug-chasing, which I agreed with and pointed out that
    reducing code size and complexity by avoiding
    unnecessary code (designed to avoid data-exposure or
    designed for policy-adherence) would reduce the number
    of hours represented by "90%" by a corresponding
    amount.Again that is a hypothesis of yours. And current known scientific studies do not seem to support it.
    >
    You say there is indirect evidence arguing against??
    Yes. Goto's can make code more dense and yet harder to understand and maintain. Because of that gotos are no longer used. Your hypothesis would suggest that gotos should be a good thing in the language (because the code is shorter.)
    >
    That is non-sensical in terms of this discussion.
    An Object in terms of OO has 'data' and 'behavior'.The 'data' should be 'encapsulated' and 'hidden' by
    the Object.
    See the top of this post. Hiding your data is like
    saying we have your bill, we know what your monthly
    statement is but we can't tell you and so we sent you
    that blank one...
    Part of the problem is that a class tends to have many
    different types of "data". A local, temporary loop
    counter would be really difficult to work with if it
    was exposed and modified from outside the scope of an
    object.
    Again let me point out that your response is non-sensical.
    A local member variable is not data for the Object.

    I am pretty tech dumb when it comes to that sort of thing, noting sensitive on the phone realy even before the erase, but if i sell it like this I just didnt want the new buyer to somehow be able to buy apps on my acct (the itunes existing acct stuff is all blank I checked it), but i do want them to be able to get apps on the phone for their own use thru wifi so I am guessing they just have to create their own itunes acct and then even without the sim it would let them grab apps?
    Or do they need a sim, if so will att give them a blank or is the phone basically useless without it (I thought I heard never give out my sim even tho the phone is deactivated I wasnt sure on security).
    Thanks for anyone who can clear this up for me, don't wanna sell it and find out i didn't follow some rule of safety for my own acct etc.

    Settings > Messages > iMessage > Off
    Settings > FaceTime > Off
    Settings > iCloud > (Scroll Down) Delete Account
    Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings.
    In that order and you're good. I've never removed a SIM before selling and I haven't had any problems. Also they would need a new SIM to activate sevice so any potential for your information going to the device after sold is gone.
    Hope that helps

  • Hardware Questions for a "Dream System"

    It looks like I may soon be able to build my version of a "dream system" for video work and, knowing my limitations, I wish to pose some questions to people who know the Adobe line and hardware in the hope of getting the most bang for my buck.
    I would like to give a little information about me that may make my questions and frame of reference make more sense.
    I formerly practiced as a structural engineer and, within my admittedly limited specialty, was at the top of my field. I was on the cutting edge of CAD and solid modeling. At one time, I spent a fortune building my "dream system" for that work and was happy with the result the result. My system even featured in a CAD magazine at the "ultimate". I also learned an important lesson. By the time the magazine went to press, I no longer had the best possible system: it was merely a very good one which could then be built for considerably less. That lesson stayed with me as did the machine which I continued to use until I left practice.
    From this experience, I no longer look for the "latest and greatest". I look for the very good but reasonably priced. and place a premium on dependability,
    I left engineering to enter seminary. I am now a United Methodist pastor. This means I no longer get $500+/hour. The church seems to labor under the old Soviet system where I pretend to work and they pretend to pay me.
    While still making the transition to pastoral life, I had the experience of living through a brain tumor. So far, I have far surpassed the medical expectations for me but there is some permanent damage. These are primarily in my math and foreign language skills but, in general, I do not read and assimilate technical material nearly as easily as I used to. I am also so far behind the times in terms of following these matters than I find a whole new vocabulary has grown up around them.
    My first question is about CPUs. I am leaning towards an Intel 6 core. If I were to build a machine with 2 CPUs, would the Adobe software be about to make good use of the additional CPU? This is separate from GPUs which I will consider more fully after establishing a base system. I fully intend on a nice GPU or multiple GPUs but am now asking about the CPU.
    It is my hope to systematically research this build here, decide upon components and then make further inquiries to further refine the system.
    I thank you for your consideration.
    John A. Lee

    I thank you very much for your input and I can say that your suggestions are taken seriously. In fact, I had already "chosen" some of your list (or very similar) as being the direction I want to head in.
    I'd like to get back to my original question, though.
    Does Premiere/AE take advantage of extra processors if they are present?
    I infer from your reply that they probably do take advantage of them but that such advantage might not be cost effective.
    My line of reasoning and/or consideration is thus:
    1. Flagship products are often much more expensive than the next tier down.
    2. The next tier is often "almost as good"
    3. Using a pair of i7 6 cores would be just slightly more expensive than an i7 8 core (speaking only in terms of CPU cost, not anything else)
    4. Would 12 cores give a significantly better performance than 8 cores if divided among 2 CPUs?
    5. A motherboard that handles 2 CPUs might have more total expansion slots available (pure surmise but will be an issue later on)
    6. Even if the  core is better, I would like to understand why.
    Please also remember that the 6k figure was just a first guess. I am not wedded to it. I have not had a vacation in 7 years and am planning on treating myself even if it means I have to wait just a little bit longer to pull the trigger on the project. That said, I am not willing to blow 30% of the entire project price just to shave 0.05 seconds off of a render time. If, however, that same 30% means that I wait 30 seconds instead of 5 hours, I would consider it well spent.
    From what I understand, GPUs have much more effect on render times than CPUs but I do want to understand what the tradeoffs I am making are in the terms of realistic performance. It may be that there is some critical aspect for which the CPU is vitally important that I have failed to consider. The problem is, I don't know enough about hardware issues. They were never my forte!
    Thanks again for spending time on this!

  • Hardware question for OS X Server

    Hello all,
    I am new to MAC's and still learning so I have what may be a dumb question.
    I have at my disposal 3 Dell PowerEdge servers that I can combine to make one really powerful workhorse. My boss is wanting to migrate all of our PC users to MAC's over time. I would like to install OS X 10.4 Server and start using this as our primary domain for those already migrated.
    My question.......is this possible?
    Can I use pc hardware to run OS X 10.4 server?
    (assuming I use a 10.4 tiger MACbook to format and install the initial harddrive that will run the server? I di dread those posts about the 10.4 version dependency.)
    thanks for everyone's help in advance...

    >ok, but can you tell me why and has anyone ever tried?
    For numerous reasons. For one, Apple have numerous checks in the OS for components that are not part of a standard PC motherboard. There was talk of Apple implementing TPM to control the hardware, but I don't know if this really is the case.
    Secondly, Macs use EFI and Open Firmware as the boot loader. PCs (at least Windows) uses BIOS. The BIOS system can't load a Mac OS X system.
    Thirdly, even if you could get past that part you're going to run into driver issues. Since Apple provide the hardware, they can bundle the relevant drivers with the OS.
    That said, there have been some reports of some people having some success in getting Mac OS X to boot on non-Apple hardware, but always with some limitations (e.g. can't get past the Finder), and it's against Apple's license agreement so they're not likely to widely publicize the fact, anyway.

  • Old user, questions for new forums

    the last time that i needed to DL extensions was right after
    the macromedia/adobe merger. being a longtime dreamweaver user, i
    was very familiar with the exchange and had no problem with it
    except that i was a bit slow to browse through. and, also, being a
    longtime photoshop user, i was familiar with the adobe
    support/downloads/forums etc. as well.
    i have a new computer and am now using dw 8 and am looking
    for some dw extensions. the exchange no longer lists information
    about the software compatibility of the extensions. so i came to
    the forum to look for information. the dw general forum lists
    119814 topics, and yet i can only access 2 pages (40 topic).
    my next step was to seek out a _forum_ forum. the closest
    thing i found, linked from
    http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/index.html
    (which also links to this forum) was under general/forum
    comments. i discovered that it required a different log-in
    procedure, requiring a first/last name for user, instead of the
    email address that this forum requires. well, this turns out to be
    defined as a &amp;quot;user to user&amp;quot; forum and
    restricted to only that. for example, the faq had a question
    regarding downloads (i'm thinking maybe i'll find a link to a
    better-functioning dw exchange). but the answer to this
    &amp;quot;faq&amp;quot; was &amp;quot;there are no
    downloads in the user to user forum&amp;quot;.
    i want to be able to get dw extensions and to locate a forum
    that addresses this activity. i also want to locate a forum that
    discusses the functionality of the support forums in general.
    and, possibly, most importantly, i want to be able to access
    more than just the 40 most recent postings in a forum that claims
    to have almost 12,000 topics.
    thanks,
    jf

  • Cisco ACS questions for new deployment

    Hi all, I am designing a new Cisco ACS deployment to handle AAA services for all our network devices. I have read the user guides and I understand the different deployment scenario's. However, what i could not find in the user guide, were answers to the questions below...
    Number of AAA clients, using command authorisation, that a single ACS server can handle?
    Does a Large Add-On license (for more than 500 nodes) need to be purchased for every ACS server, or does one license cover the whole deployment?
    How is AAA load-balancing performed? Does each AAA server need to be defined individually on every Network device? Or is there some intelligence build in to the AAA servers so that they can distribute the load themselves? Or can a load balancer be used like you can with Cisco ISE PSN nodes?
    Thanks
    Mario

    Supported number of clients depends on License for example
    The base license is required for all deployed software instances and for all appliances. The base license enables you to use all ACS functions except license-controlled features, and it enables standard centralized reporting features.
    The base license:
    Is required for all primary and secondary ACS instances.
    Is required for all appliances.
    Supports deployments that have a maximum of 500 NADs.
    The following are the types of base licenses:
    Permanent—Does not have an expiration date. Supports deployments that have a maximum of 500 NADs.
    Evaluation—Expires 90 days from the time the license is issued. Supports deployments that have a maximum of 50 NADs.
