Hardware Requirements for a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller.

Hi,
I have a secondary office with 10 users with a domain controller that has reached its end of life.  We like to upgrade the current hardware to serve as a domain controller and potentially as an onsite file server that will sync with head office during
off peak business hours.
Any recommendations for a low cost yet reliable hardware for the above solution ?

Hi,
Thanks for your post.
I think you need to meet the requirement for upgrading to windows server 2012r2.

And you could refer to the following article about windows server 2012r2 domain controller configuration

  • Renaming Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller with Exchange Server 2013

Is it possible to rename Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller, as we are using Exchange Server 2013 as a member server on Windows Server 2012 ?
We have some issues with the Domain Name, so want to rename..
Maybe somebody knows the best practices how to do this in best way???
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    You should do the following:
    1. Promote another DC.
    2. Transfer FSMO roles to that server.
    3. Decommission old DC.
    4. Rename it.
    5. Promote it again as DC.

  • ACS 4.1 support with Windows Server 2012 Domain controller

I am upgrading my Domain Controller / Active Directory from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012.
In my environment, I am using Cisco ACS 4.1 which is integrated with Windows Server 2003 Active Directory.
Will ACS4.1 will work fine with my new domain controller (Windows server 2012) or I need to upgrade my ACS too?
    Regards,
    Junaid

    Junaid,
ACS 4.x code doesn't even support Windows 2008 R2. Your best bet is to migrate the ACS from 4.x to ACS 5.4 Patch 2 or stay with windows 2003 or 2008 (Non-R2).
ACS 5.4 patch 2 supports Windows 2012 AD.

  • Minumum hardware requirement for Siebel Document server?

what is the minimum hardware requirement for Siebel document server?

To install the Document Server, perform the following steps:
    Obtain the required hardware.
    Install the Siebel Server.
    Install third-party applications.
After installing the Siebel Server, you may have to follow some of the steps described in Configuring the Document Server. The Document Server is a component of Siebel eDocuments, which can be installed during installation of the Siebel Server. Consult with your system administrator to verify that the Document Server has been installed and configured according to the requirements listed in the following sections.
    Hardware Requirements
The Document Server is supported on the Windows 2000 platform. To maintain stability and performance, the Document Server must run on a dedicated host machine. The Siebel Server on this machine should host one instance of the Siebel eDocuments component group. No other components should be running other than required system components.
To support more users, you can run additional instances of the Siebel eDocuments component group on additional dedicated host machines.
    Installing the Siebel Server
Install the Siebel Server on the dedicated host machine of the Document Server. For more information about installing the Siebel Server, see Siebel Server Installation Guide for Microsoft Windows.
During installation, you will have the option to enable component groups. Select the Siebel eDocuments component group. Do not enable any other component groups.
This step can also be performed after installation is complete, as described in the section Enabling the Component Group.
    Installing Third-Party Applications
    You must install Microsoft Word.
    To install Microsoft Office
Log on to the server machine using the same user account that the Siebel Server NT service uses. This user account must belong to the Administrators group.
NOTE: The install must use the same account to be used by the NT Service. The installer configures COM security settings so that the installing user account will have the correct permissions to access and launch the application. If the install uses an account other than the Siebel Server NT service account, errors may occur when the Document Server tries to launch the application.
Install Microsoft Office using a Typical, or complete, installation. Verify that your version of Microsoft Office will install the Web Authoring Tools (HTML) component with the Typical installation. If it does not, you will need to use the Custom installation option, and install all of the typical components as well as the Web Authoring Tools (HTML) component.
Start the applications that will be used by the Document Server. This forces the applications to register themselves.
    Close the applications.

  • REMOTE DESKTOP SERVICES CLIENT ACCESS LICENSES FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012 STANDARD AND DATACENTER

I am using a window 7 professional  service pack 1 and I purchase REMOTE DESKTOP SERVICES CLIENT ACCESS LICENSES FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS SERVER 2012 STANDARD AND DATACENTER. but  the seller did not send me any installation CD or instruction
    on how to use it.
Please how can I use it on my window 7 professional  service pack 1.
    Thank you.

Though Bill is absolutely correct for most CALs, Remote Desktop Services does have its own special licensing server.  I haven't installed one on 2012, yet, but here is a step-by-step guide for 2008.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd983943(v=ws.10).aspx
Here is a lab guide for 2012 -
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134160.aspx
But, the explanation of your environment begs the question - what are you trying to do?  You say you have a desktop OS and you are talking about Windows Server products.  In that light, your question does not make a lot of sense.

  • Windows Server 2012 as NTP Server for Windows Server 2008R2 Domain Controller

We have one domain with 3 Windows Server 2008R2 DC's. Our Edge router is configured to get the time from the internet, and was our timesource for the PDC emulator. But lately we have migrated our major routers to Cisco IOS15, and now the timeservice on the
PDCe is unable to fetch the time. This is a known bug, as you can read here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ja-JP/b16de048-8642-4799-b85a-ad092e17dd47/windows-server-2012-ntp-version-compatibility
Now I've found out that Windows Server 2012 does sync with the router. That's our DirSync server, and is in the same VLAN as our DC's. So I thought: I'll set up the Windows Server 2012 as new timeserver, so our PDCe can sync with that server. (Compony
policy is that DC's don't talk to the internet). Everything seems alright.
    I've set:
    w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:<IP of router>,0x8 /syncfromflags:manual
    w32tm /config /reliable:yes
    Changed the registry with:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CC\SERVICES\W32TIME\TIMEPROVIDERS\NTPSERVER - Enabled:1
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CC\SERVICES\W32TIME\Config - AnnounceFlags:A
And stopped and started the W32Time service. I can see that the Windows 2012 server is fetching the correct time, and checked with NBTSTAT -NA that it's listening on port 123.
But our PDCe doesn't sync. (also changed the config so it has the 2012 server as timesource). Get the EventID 47:
Time Provider NtpClient: No valid response has been received from manually configured peer <w2012server> after 8 attempts to contact it. This peer will be discarded as a time source and NtpClient will attempt to discover a new peer with this DNS
name. The error was: The peer is unreachable.
    What more can I try?

It only shows me the 3 DC's:
    DC04.domain.local *** PDC ***[[::1]:123]:
        ICMP: 0ms delay
        NTP: +0.0000000s offset from DC04.domain.local

            Stratum: 2
    Warning:
Reverse name resolution is best effort. It may not be
correct since RefID field in time packets differs across
NTP implementations and may not be using IP addresses.

  • Laptop config for running Windows Server 2012

    Hello,
For demo purpose I need to install Windows Server 2012 on a laptop, and some other 64 bits applications.
Do you experiment a specific laptop which is running fine with this OS?
For example I tried with Intel i5 and 16 GB RAM : Excel takes 10 min to load and most of the time it announces "Not responding". Same thing for all the other applications. I'm quite paralyzed in my job.
    Thanks for advises!

    Hi,
I am not sure what is wrong with your setup, but Windows Server 2012 can run on laptop totally fine.
Especially with your rig. Can you tell us did you do a fresh install of Windows Server 2012?
I checked some pages (not to jump to conclusions myself), and I have found out that others didn't have any issues with the setup.
These are the requirements (doesn't matter if it is a standalone physical machine or a laptop):
    Windows Server 2012 requirements
Make sure your drivers are up to date.
In this article you will see that the guy used a laptop on which he had Windows Server 2008 (lower config than yours), and it worked just fine:

    Hello friedns :
We have a company with about 2000 users , and two windows server 2003 domain controllers , one of them acts as a primary domain controller , and the other acts as secondary domain controller , all the FSMO s are on the primary DC ,we have decided to upgrade all of our servers from windows server 2003 to windows server 2008 , the first step is to upgrade the domain controllers to windows server 2008 , our domain controllers are so sensitive and has to be active 24 hours a day , i have stress upgrading it to windows server 2008 , what is the best solution to upgrade it with no risk ?
( i have an opinion but i am not sure and i dont have any guide about it , i want to install a windows server 2008 and promote it as an additional domain controller to the windows server 2003 DC and the transfer all the FSMOs to it , and then promote the first domain controller !!! is that possible ? if yes , is there any guide about it? )
If there is a guide available for it please let me know . (Specially if there is a tip & trick)
    thank you guys.

    Hi,
This TechNet online article might be helpful for you.
How to Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee522994(WS.10).aspx
For your convenience, I have list some general steps for your reference.
Since the following operation have potential damage to Active Directory database, it is highly suggested that you'd better perform a full backup of Active Directory (System State) firstly. Also it is better to test the following procedure in a similar lab environment first.
    General Steps:
    =============
    1. Verify the new server's TCP/IP configuration has been pointed to the current DNS server.
    2. Make the new server become a member server of the current Windows Server 2003 domain first.
    3. Upgrade the Windows Server 2003 forest schema to Windows Server 2008 schema with the "adprep /forestprep" command on old server.
Please run the "adprep.exe /forestprep" command from the Windows Server 2008 installation disk on the schema master. To do this, insert the Windows Server 2008 installation disk, and then type the following command:
    Drive:\sources\ADPREP\adprep.exe /forestprep
    4. Upgrade the Windows 2003 domain schema with the "adprep /domainprep" command on old server.
Please run the "adprep.exe /domainprep" command from the Windows Server 2008 installation disk on the infrastructure master. To do this, insert the Windows Server 2008 installation disk, and then type the following command:
    Drive:\sources\ADPREP \adprep.exe /domainprep
    5. Insert Windows Server 2008 Installation Disc in the new server.
    6. Run "dcpromo" on new server to promote it as an additional domain controller in existing Windows 2003 domain, afterwards you may verify the installation of Active Directory.
    Please refer to:
How to Verify an Active Directory Installation in Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816106
    7. Verify the new server's TCP/IP configuration has been pointed to current DNS server.
    8. Enable Global Catalog on new server and manually Check Replication Topology and afterwards manually trigger replication (Replicate Now) to synchronize Active Directory database between 2 replicas.
Please note: It will some time to replicate GC between DC, please wait some time with patience.
    9. Disable Global Catalog on the old DC.
    10. Transfer all the FSMO roles from the old DC to the new DC.
    Please refer to:
How to view and transfer FSMO roles in Windows Server 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324801
    11. Verify that the old DNS Server Zone type is Active Directory-Integrated. If not, please refer to:
How To: Convert DNS Primary Server to Active Directory Integrated
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816101
Note: Active Directory Integrated-Zone is available only if DNS server is a domain controller.
    12. Install DNS component on new server and configure it as a new DNS Server (Active Directory Integrated-Zone is preferred). All the DNS configuration should be replicated to the new DNS server with Active Directory Replication.
    13. Make all the clients change TCP/IP configuration to point to new server as DNS.
    14. You may configure TCP/IP on all the clients, or adjust DHCP scope settings to make them use the new DNS server.
Please note: It is a good practice to make the old DC offline for several days and check whether everything works normally with the new server online. If so, you may let the old DC online and run DCPROMO to demote it.
    Hope it helps.

  • Advice on setting up a windows server 2012 domain LAB for study within Hyper V server 2012 r2 machine

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
    Physical equpiment,
1 pc   which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine.  This machine i would like  to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study  8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2,  which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
    to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure.   as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup,  then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience.  and i would prefer to have my  as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance  for any help you can give me

"If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to
connect that pc to the domain."
It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain.  A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101  I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop.  But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it.  I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.
"Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines."
Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.

  • Best Practices for Configuring Windows Server 2012 R2 for VM Performance

    Good afternoon,
I've been told that VMWare has written a document or article on how to get the most performance out of an instance of Server 2012 R2 as a virtual machine. I was told this magical article has things like a checklist of features or services that can be turned off (such as tablet features) that will increase the performance/low overhead on the VM.
Can anyone help me find such an article?
    Thanks,

    Hello there,
There is no upgrade path from Server 2012 Essentials to R2.  R2 is not an upgrade, it is a new build.  Essentials does not upgrade easily, you will want to perform a migration of the server.  This will require additional hardware.  You
can possibly backup the 2012 Essentials, build a temp server on workstation hardware just to do the migration from,  restore the backup to the new server and then perform the migration to R2.
