Hardware/Software Compatibility Question With Wireless Repeater

Hey Discussions,
This is a simple question that's more along the lines of a hardware issue. I havea wireless connection in my building that I need to boost so I will be able to have a stronger and faster connection. From what I've gathered in my newbie networking skills, I'll need a wireless repeater to accomplish this task.
I need two things from the masses:
A suggestion for a wireless repeater (preferably one that's universal, as I don't know anything about the router that is supplying the Internet...don't ask.)
And a simple way to set this up so it will be able to work with both my Mac mini and a laptop running Windows XP.
Sound easy enough, yet I can't figure anything out. Any help will be appreciated!
-Mateo

You're heading down a slippery slope. Be careful.
Frist, define why you think you need to boost the signal.
When you're connected, how many 'bars' do you have on your AirPort signal strength meter? If that's low, then fair enough, otherwise something else is going on and a repeater might not help.
For example, your connection could be slow because there are many people using the wireless network (the wireless bandwidth is shared between all wireless clients.
It could also be slow because your upstream link (from the base station to the rest of the network) is saturated
It could also be slow if the server you're using is overloaded (especially if you're using a proxy server that's proxying all your web traffic since that would affect all sites, not just one).
If you have a good signal then a repeater (e.g. WDS) is going to degrade performance, not increase it, so it's important to determine the cause before you try to implement a 'fix'.

  • Compatibility question with Nortel phones

    Hello,
I just introduced a Cisco SP200-48P switch into our Nortel environment. When I plug the phone into a POE port, the port is unresponsive (doesn't light up), and the Nortel phone doesn't power up.
The data aspect of the port is fine, when I plug a computer into the switchport.
Am I running into a compatibility issue with Nortel phones, or should they work just fine with the switch right out of the box.
    Thank you,
    John

Hi jdamone, please verify you're using a POE port. The left side of the port banks are POE. The right side are not. If the 1-12 and 25-36 would be POE on a 48 port switch. And yes, if the phone is 802.3af compliant, it should work out of the box, no problems. If you're connecting to the correct port and verified the wire and the phone is POE then the next step would be to upgrade the switch firmware to latest version.

  • 800 series with wireless repeater supports?

    Hi,
Can anyone confirm if any of the 800 series routers support wireless station-mode repeater?
The software configuration guide suggests it is possible but I've been unable to find a definitive answer.
    Thanks.

  • I-pod touch, 4.3 software, pairing ipod with wireless keyboard: PIN?

following instructions to pair my i-Pod touch with my i-mac wireless keyboard, after the i-Pod tells me that the keyboard is discovered and i click on continue, then a keyboard appears on the i-pod and asks me to enter the PIN for the keyboard. I can't find a PIN anywhere for the keyboard. pairing with the i-mac was done at the factory and no PIN or PasssKey can be found. How do i type in a PIN or Passkey if I have no way of knowing what it is? I've looked through the articles in support but none seem to tell me how to find the passkey. Does anybody know how I can get it or another way to get the keyboard paired with my i-pod? Thanks for any help!

Thanks for your reply. It led me to the answer. My keyboard is a 2003 keyboard even though it came with my i-mac in late 06. It is the 4 battery white keyboard which according to the article you linked me to is not compatible with pairing with the i-pod. Unfortunately , I accidentally marked this question as answered in the only other reply I received. So sorry that you will not get credit for it but I do thank you for taking the time to help me.

  • Hardware/software compatibility

    Hi.
My first post here, so it may be in the wrong place, apologies if so.
    It's (hopefully) a simple question;
    Is this software: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/4435
compatible with this version of the NXT: http://www.commotionstore.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=9721
I'll want to use VB to program the NXT, along with labview, and basically all the other goodies that come with the standard version of the NXT.
If it's not, where can I get hold of the relevant software?
    many many thanks,
    -h.

    Hi h,
The software you're looking at on the first site is actually just an add-on to LabVIEW, a full graphical development program made by National Instruments.  The NXT software that is intended for kids to program the NXT brick is generally bundled with the NXT product commercially available in stores, whereas LabVIEW is a much more robust application targeted toward those intending to do a greater amount of development, whether for educational or industrial purposes.  Thus the NXT Toolkit you see on the first site will, once installed, give you the ability to develop code in the natural LabVIEW manner, but targeted for an NXT brick.  Hopefully this info. is helpful and what you're looking for!

  • Linksys Connect CD/Downloadable Software compatibility problem with Mac OSX 10.4.11

I purchased a Linksys E1200 and I am running Mac OSX 10.4.11. As I have a G4 eMac, I cannot run a higher operating software. The CD that came with the E1200 will not launch the Linksys Connect software, as it is not compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.11. When I download Linksys Connect software from the support section of the Linksys site (version 1 or 2), same problem. I have read that I can use the E1200 with Mac OSX 10.4.11, but how? Getting very frustrated and would appreciate any practical advice/help. Thanks!

    Hi bassist71,
You may actually do the setup manually. It's done by accessing the setup page of the route through 192.168.1.1 and configuring the settings according to your Internet connection type. If you have a Cable connection, you may check this link, http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=0ff4c94586a345d082828ec2161aaecf_3686.xml&pid=80&r... • Suggestions for hardware/software to VJ with videos from iTunes

I am a digital DJ / KJ and would like to incorporate the videos from my iTunes collection into my show. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

There occurred to me that I should have mentioned that I am assuming that you are using the trackpad and keyboard of the Mac Book which I can understand your Dad really disliking. My suggestion is that you blow a few bucks and get the extra keyboard and trackball as a present for your dad and plug it into the Mac Book USB port. You might also find it handy to hook up a monitor (20" or so). It will be so much easier to read the larger screen. You might also be aware that with mouse, keyboard and display hooked up you can close the lid on the Mac Book and the display will look a bit better not having to share the video processor with the Mac Book display.
The other thing I would mention is that it might be wise to download one of the programs that make an audible click through the speaker with each keyclick, mouse click and scroll wheel turn. I use a little Preference Pane called "Keyclick" which gives you many options on how you want it to sound (I make my keyboard sound like an old fashioned typewriter - which is a sound your Dad would be quite familiar with!) With this installed, your Dad will have much more feedback and it will make typing and mousing much easier for him.

  • Compatibility question with Dreamweaver 8/Coursebuilder

We are putting together our first web-based training using
Dreamweaver 8 with the Coursebuilder extension. We aren't sure just
how involved we will be in web-based training. If we get quite
involved in it and later want to use Authorware, will we be able to
open and use our Dreamweaver 8/Coursebuilder files? Thanks for any
    advice.

    Well, kinda.
You can load the IE ActiveX contol in Authorware. You could
    then use
that control to display the HTML pages. I'm not sure what
    that would
really help...but could be that if you have informational
    pages you like
the layout of and don't want to recreate in Authorware, you
    could use
the ActiveX control to show and navigate between those pages,
    then
hide/erase the control when you want to 'return the stage' to
    Authorware
for whatever interactions or other information you want to
    present.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
As the psychic crew don't get here till later, any chance in the world you'll tell us the name of this mysterious software? It just might help.
    Also, what does

  • WAP54G Wireless Repeater still has problems after setup

I have a WAP54G configured as a Wireless Repeater to my WRT54GS router.  I have configured all equipment on my  wireless network (192.169.1.xxx) with static IP's.  My Router MAC has been entered in the WAP54G and the link works . . . kinda . . . .sorta. . . .with issues
I also have an A/V receiver hard-wired to the RJ-45 at the Wireless Repeater.  I am able to access Internet Radio stations on the A/V Receiver thru the Wireless Repeater uplinked to the Router and out to Internet.  I also have a Synology NAS which is hard-wired back at my WRT54GS router.  Although the A/V Receiver can "see" all audio files and folders on my network NAS, I am unable to play any of the MP3 files.  The Receiver will immediately display "Access Error".  As a test, if I temporarily plug the NAS network directly into the A/V Receiver (threreby bypassing all of my home networking) all MP3's will play fine.  Therefore, the problem must either be in the WAP54G, the WRT54GS, or the configuration in one or both of them..
    My connections are:
    A/V Receiver ------ WAP54GS {{{{{{{{{ wireless }}}}}}}}}}} WRT54GS ----- CABLE Modem ------- Internet
I also have a NAS directly hard-wired into one of the WRT54GS RJ-45 ports.
    My questions::
    1. When configured as a Wireless Repeater, wll the WAP54G still fully function with hard-wired devices connected directly into the RJ-45 port (as I currently have it set up)?  Most all of the literature and articles I've seen concentrate on the expansion of the Wi-Fi portion of the Wireless Repeater only and make minimal or no mention of using the integral RJ-45 port.
    2. Since the WAP54G Wireless Repeater has a separate actual IP address, do I need to do any changes to addressing on either my A/V Receiver, NAS? or Router  Specifically, does the Wireless Repeater become fully "transparent" to my home network or do I need to re-enter different IP addresses, port forwarding or port trigerring?  (This is the stuff I don't really understand.)
    3. Should the system basically function as I have described or is there anything I'm obviously missing that would prevent the A/V Receiver from properly communicating with the NAS thru the Wireless Repeater and the Router?
All replys or suggestions gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply,
As far as your sketch is concerned . . .Yes, that is what I attempted to describe in my earlier postings.
Before my first post, I attempted to verify as much as I was able.
I noted earlier that I had tried AP Client and could not get it to work.  Literature for the WAP states that the only mode which can connect a WAP to a WRT router is the Wireless Repeater mode.  On the WAP, both AP Client, and Wireless Bridge modes state that each will only communicate with another (second) WAP (there is no mention of WRT in those modes).  That would require a second WAP and yet more $$$, just to uplink ONE RJ-45 to my router.  OK, since it can't damage anything, I tried the other modes just for "grins & giggles".  It resulted in a very-unhappy wireless network.  All network devices poped up with IP-Conflict errors and the network came to a crashing halt.  This is why I ended up with Wireless Repeater mode.
Yes, with the WAP configured as Wireless Repeater, I AM able to easily ping the receiver from anywhere on my network.  In fact, I've tried 3-4 different ethernet devices plugged into the RJ-45 port of the WAP and I can ping them all.  Amazingly, every other ethernet device I plug into thje WAP work perfectly  . . except streaming music from my NAS to my A/V receiver.  At that point, I suspected the receiver has a network port problem except it perfectly streams internet radio thru the WAP.  The only thing the WAP will not stream successfully is music from my NAS.  I should also clarify that ALL firewall features on my NAS are disabled because it is already on the secure side of my router.  Therefore, I'm positive nothing in the NAS is blocking access from the WAP.  I've also verified my other 3 home PC's can access the NAS.  Two PC's are hard-wired to my router net and one PC is a laptop with wi-fi linked to my WRT router (all are on my 192.168.1.xxx network).  The REALLY screwy part is that I CAN display all files and folders on the NAS from the receiver  . . they just won't successfully play without giving a network error message.  Lastly, as a test, I've even temporarily disabled all wi-fi security.  Result is identical.
To eliminate everything but the WAP, I temporarily stretched a 75' Cat-5 cable between the receiver and my WRT router.  With no other changes or setting mods, it immediately works perfectly.  Seriously, I've spent dozens & dozens of hours on this.  I"ve even borrowed another WAP from a friend (same version & newest firmware revision) and once it is configured, it does the exact same thing. I've even did a WAP hardware "Reset" and reconfigured it from scratch . . . also same thing.
Again, to clarify, ALL of this is on the same side of my home network.  Everything is within my 192.168.1.xxx.  I've triple-checked that I have no IP confilicts, I've tried both DHCP and using static IP's.  I've even tried disconnecting ALL other devices except for my receiver, the WAP and the WRT with the same results.   I am NOT trying to access any of this from the internet side of my router, so I shouldn't need to mess with port forwarding amd all that.  Everything says it "should" work . . . but yet it doesn't, on TWO different WAP devices.  All I can figure out is that the RJ-45 port on the WAP is not "fully transparent" when configured as a Wireless Repeater.  The literature does not state whether it is or if the device is designed as a Wi-Fi repeater only.
Since I'm only trying to get a single RJ-45 device up-linked to my router, I'm inclined to pick up a $30 ethernet to wi-fi gaming adapter, throw my old WAP on the shelf and get a beer.  It should work, and I've spent WAY too much time on this already.

    Hello:
Thank you for the update for remote access for desktops.
Personally, I do not want to give remote access to anyone but myself as privacy is my friend.  Can this remote desktop software still be for me personally unless I allow access and for my MAC lap top only?  What if I do not update? I do use this lap top in other countries.  compatibility issues with what?

Apple Remote Desktop is off be default. It has to be enabled for some one to be able to remotely connect to the computer. And then, you still have to have a user name and password on the computer to remotely connect with.
If you want to see if remote access has is enabled for Apple Remote Desktop; you can find the setting in, Apple Menu, System Prefrences, Sharing. If it's enabled, Remote Management or Screen Sharing will be checked.
Beucase Apple Remote Desktop Agent is part of the Mac Operating System; even if your not using it, Apple Software Updates will from time to time offer updates for ARD Agent. Software Updates can some times be stacked ontop of each other; so chosing not to install an update, can mean other updates you may want may not be offered. At least until you install the updates those updates require. Also software updates can improve the security of your computer.
