Hardware test CD / Wallstreet battery behaviour 2

Hello,
First of all I'd like to know if Apple did release an Hardware test CD for the Wallstreet powerbook 1998 233MHZ ?!!
Is it possible to find one?!
The reason of this post is to add for the "wallstreet battery behaviour" thread i have left and 100 people watched but I can't write on it anymore... if you read it, I haven't got refunded for that broken battery bought on ebay but I'm sure it has been hacked to show full state.
Since I can't buy all fake working batteries and don't want to buy the new made that obviuosly don't work well I wonder if testing the computer with the hardware test CD would help me diagnose if the battery is dead or any of the component is failling.
regards

Thanks for your kind thought and link but I already used battery reset I found in another post long time ago before leaving my own posts!!!
It does work but the battery doesn't charge and the icon is still red crossed!
The thing is when the power is cut or the computer unplugged the date is set to a year backward of forward the actual year (eg: 2038 , 1993, 1904,1974,2001...)
I then tried all the possibilities with key combination to reset Pram, PMU ect... (n battery reset) what had changed is the rechargeable battery, it doesn't charge but when the computer is cold and unplugged if I press the button on the front the leds lit by cliping the first one to full power and the rest very low which means there still power going through but can't be charged.
Cos of the Date problem and also I read an Apple article about the fact dead Pram batteries can cause rechargeable batteries to die and so becoming defecting, I have decided to buy a new Pram and I'll probably find another reason why the rechargeable battery doesn't work.
This means I have once again to buy another rechargeable battery to chase the problem and solve the issue so I can carry my laptop and keep my date running!!!
regards

i run  hard hardware test on my macbook white an found error like this 4SNS/1/40000001:VPOR-0.578 and i replace my new battery but it not charging, help me!!

Bring it in for service.  Anytime hardware test detects an error, that's an indication the service department needs to fix it.

  • Erratic battery behaviour on Macbook air since latest update

My Macbook Air 11.1 is from 2011, and the battery started going bad last year. I ordered and placed a new battery in january. This worked perfectly, no problems whatsoever. This morning, I installed the latest available Apple update (unsure which one, can't find it). After that, my battery has been behaving strangely. This is what happened:
    - I unplugged my laptop at one point, and moved it from my bed to desk. I went to my kitchen, returned, and the laptop had turned off.
    - I put the charger in and turned it back on. I realised the battery info said the battery isn't charging and 'replace now'. Surprised, since I just got the battery this january.
    - All of a sudden, the icon changed to white (it's black when not charging) and it was charging again.
    - This kept happening, on and off.
    - Unplugging the charger results in shutting of immediately or within a few seconds. At this moment, it's charging (at 97%). But it can change any minute.
    - I tried moving my laptop around a bit, tilting it up and down, but that doesn't seem to do anything (neither good or bad).
I looked on the internet for a few solutions:
    - Resetting PRAM: no differene
    - Resetting SMC: no difference
    - Reinstalling Yosemite completely (do you recommend this? In any specific order?)
Does anyone know what is best to try? I can also open up my laptop again and check the battery, but I doubt that's the problem. Btw, third party apps like battery diag/battery health/coconut battery all make no mention of the battery needing to be replaced.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm emigrating to Serbia next week, so I hope to fix it before then
    I included an Etrecheck report:
    Problem description:

    Hi Dominic,
Thank you for your help! I did all three things and run etrecheck again. It now shows the following, different things seem to be failing now? Like Kerberos?

  • I want to run hardware test on my Power Mac G5 but it isn't working.

    What I tried:
I have the original install disc 1 which came with the machine in the optical drive (which is the usual one). I printed the hardware test guide which is on the disc, disconnected everything but mouse, keyboard and monitor. I tried to boot, pressing the Alt/Option key, but the "system picker" or boot menu won't show up. What happens is what somebody described as for "old world" macs: my system boots with no finder window open and without the white screen and apple logo (which usually shows up during startup).
I also tried something I found in a user manual pdf for Power Mac G5 on the apple archives: Booting and press-holding C (btw it's strange that this manual says something different than the manual on the original disc). What happens here is that my machine is booting from the original disc but it boots in Installation mode. I looked at every drop-down-menu I could find there for several times but there is definitely no hardware test, since this is thought to install Mac OS 10.4.
I also tried the Intel-way and holding D during boot, but no surprise, it only booted the first drive (like it should on a pre-Intel).
But something about this all is very strange. Yesterday night I tried all these steps above and when I was close to fall asleep in front of my monitor it suddenly worked and I made it finally into the hardware test. If I remember correctly, I was holding down the C key, but as I said a was pretty dizzy and can be mistaken. I ran hardware test once enhanced and it stopped during ram, giving me an error code I wrote down. But since I made it into the test and was so tired, I thought "lets continue tomorrow" which was my epic fail for this year, I guess. Today I repeated every step, every way I tried but it just doesn't work; and I read sooo many forums and Q&A's.
By the way here is my error code which appeared after 49 minutes (to proof I didn't dream this):
    "2MEM/1/4: DIMM3/J14"
Why do I want to do this?
Around the 1st of September this year my Power Mac G5 didn't boot anymore (the fan speeding issue). After reading a little online I came to the point that its either my Ram memory or its my graphics card or its Pram or NVram. I resetted Pram and NVram, I also replaced battery and then it booted again for one day but on the following day it didn't. I repeated every step but the battery replacement since it was a brand new one. It can only be Ram memory or my Graphics card (which is the standard one for this machine).
Since then my Power Mac was rarely in use, only two or three times in Firewire Target Mode to access some of the data. Yesterday I wanted to do this again; booting it in FT mode but I must have connected my keyboard too late during booting and my machine surprisingly booted just fine! I was so stoked about this! Then I wanted to find out why it didn't work for a while and started several steps. Ran maintanance scripts, repaired the system volume, checked for enough free space, checked my Ram and then I stumbled on the interwebs over the hardware test which is delivered on the original install disc 1 and I never heard about this before (strange enough). What followed is written above.
    What do I have?
    I have this:
    Modellname:
    Power Mac G5
      Modell-Identifizierung:
    PowerMac7,3
      Prozessortyp:
    PowerPC G5  (3.0)
      Prozessorgeschwindigkeit:

      Anzahl der CPUs:

      L2-Cache (pro CPU):

      Speicher:

      Busgeschwindigkeit:

      Boot-ROM-Version:

      Seriennummer (System):
    CK52107BRTY
      Hardware-UUID:
    00000000-0000-1000-8000-000D93640EEE
Sorry for the German but I think you still get it. The PPC was delivered with 10.4 and I bought it used from a friend with his original Update disc to 10.5 and I updated to the max, 10.5.8. I have 2x 1TB drive (similar ones) together as a Raid0 and three partitions on it. (I know now that it doesnt make that much of a sense).
Yeah so I really want to find out why my machine didn't work for three months but since it is so old and I'm a student, it doesn't make any sense to me to go to an Apple store or similar to have it expensively serviced since there is no guarantee that these guys really help you (heard some stories about the local stores here).
Is there a way to re-access the hardware test and run it to the end?
As you might have noticed, I'm pretty desperate. I would soooooooo appreciate it!!
    Best,
    Erik

    "2MEM/1/4: DIMM3/J14"
Replace the memory in the DIMM 3 slot.
If you are running Mac OS X 10.5 you can use this program to test your G5's memory:
    http://www.kelleycomputing.net/Rember/
It will subject your RAM to a more thorough test than Apple Hardware Test.

  • MBA (mid-2012) SSD failure after 8 weeks Hardware Test

Brand new MBA mid-2012 (8GB RAM, 128GB SSD running ML 10.8.0).
Failed to startup - Apple logo on grey screen appeared, then the spinning gear wheel, then a blank screen, then the spinning gear wheel, then a blank screen, repeating ad nauseum...
I reset PRAM and SMC - no change
I opened in Single User Mode to run fsck - no change, then in Verbose mode to see what messages appeared (flashing messages of appleid verification timeouts)
Disk Utility - no problems detected
    DiskWarrior - no problems detected
Tech Tool Pro - (1) SMART check picked up 7 SSD failures/errors:
[Wear Levelling Count, Program Fail Count(total), Erase Fail Count (total), Power-off Retract Count, Media Wear Out Indicator, Total LBAs Written and Total LBAs Read all 7 FAILED], remainder of SMART tests passed, and SSD PASSED SMART check.
Then (2) Surface Scan checked all 236+million blocks, NO BAD BLOCKS identified/detected.
Very strange indeed!! - booted into Recovery Drive, verified and all ok, no problems starting from this partition! Problem lies on normal boot partition (of course...!)
Was able to boot from external ML HDD and was able to pull all files off Air (interestingly Carbon Copy Cloner reported one text file sitting on bad block and was unable to copy/clone)
Time to get serious: Spoke with Apple Tech here in Australia late on a Saturday pm (thanks Olin!)
Ran Apple Hardware Test in Extended mode [took me back to System 7 days with very old icon!!] - took around 1hr and reported error "4HDD/11/40000000 SATA(0,0)" so it looks like new MBA is heading back to Apple!
I am thinking about re-installing ML from the Recovery Drive in case I can get the MBA running again to make sure I have all my file backed up, but it looks like an 8 week old MBA is no more...
anyone else seen this in mew MBAs? would hate to think I am the only one! plenty of other discussions around this error on HDD machines, but haven't found anything for this error for a SSD.

I have a 15-inch, retina, 2.7 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 768 GB flash drive MacBook Pro notebook, running 10.8.2
I have noticed that if I run the extended hardware test while connected to the power supply I do not get the error 4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0) but if I run the same test while on battery power I get that error.
Does the same happen to you?
Any idea of what the problem is?

  • Need to run a hardware test on MBP4,1, 17" OS 10.5.8 w/out disc?

I have a macbook pro with the following specs:
    - 17inch macbook pro 4,1, 2. 5 GHz
    - non-unibody (released sometime in 2008)
    - OS 10.5.8
My battery recently expanded and 'exploded', so i bought a new one (from macsales.com) and replaced it. battery works fine.
    I also upgraded my RAM: from 2GB to 6GB (1 x 2GB, 1 x 4GB).
    I have two issues now:
    1) I have a birdlike chirping sound that occurs randomly and not often. I had similar sounds prior to my battery expanding and going bust. However, now that I've bought a new battery, I have a concern that it might be something else in the hardware.
    2) I would like to upgrade my OS to mavericks; but first, I understand that i have to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6) before upgrading to anything.
I would like to know the following:
    a) I would like to run a hardware test to diagnose it and find out what the sounds are from and also a general check up before i actually upgrade OS.
However, I don't have my installation discs because I moved country and it was a long time ago.
How can i run a hardware test and check my laptop without a disc?
    b) since i'm not in the US, how can i buy the Snow Leopard? is there an option for buying when outside of the US? I can't seem to find it.
    thanx for your help

  • G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD

We have a DP 1ghz Quicksilver PowerMac G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the machine.
We were in the process of installing 10.4 Tiger before placing it for sale.
The Mac was originally OSX Server 10.1 that we later converted to a worksation running 10.3 Panther.
It has 1 GB of memory, 80GB hardrive, 250MB Zip Drive and a Radeon 7500 video card.
Since this machine only has a CD-R drive and not a DVD-R, we installed Tiger using another Mac via Target Disk Mode. The installation process went well, but when I tried to reboot I got a Kernel Panic right after startup screen with the grey Apple logo.
On some reboots we get to the blue startup screen, others it stops at the grey Apple logo, others a black box like the a Kernel Panic - but with no text. Twice it went directly into Open Firmware.
We have done the following during our troubleshooting:
    - Reseat RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, Zip & CD-R connections
    - Remove RAM 1 stick at a time and reboot
    - Replace RAM with RAM from another working Quicksilver
    - Replace Video Card with one from another working Quicksilver
    - Zap PRAM
    - Reset CUDA switch
    - Unplug the MAC and remove everything (RAM, Battery, etc) for 30 minutes and try to reboot
    - Tried booting from the Macintosh Server G4 Software Restore CD
    - Tried booting from Mac OS X Server CD
    - Tried booting from AppleCare Protection Plan CD with TechTool
    - Tried booting from Diskwarrior CD
    - Tried booting from an external FireWire drive with a disk image of Tiger OS Install
    - Tried booting with the hard drive disconnected
The Mac WILL boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD and will pass ALL of the extended tests.

Conventional wisdom says that any Mac that will not boot up from a System/Install CD OS 9 or an Install CD Mac OS X, has a Hardware problem.
The diagnostic CD is a red herring because it uses a very primitive method of reading the CD, and so does not properly represent the machines general ability to read CDs.
I would look at the CD drive cables, etc, and see if another drive gives different results.
You have not mentioned using the Startup Manager (option key at Startup) to do any checking:

  • Will Apple Hardware Test definitely detect RAM errors?

    Hello,
Been having various problems with Leopard/MacBook. Someone suggested running Apple Hardware Test, which I did, in extended + looping mode all night (it cycled 6 times). The test turned up nothing. Can I take this to mean that whatever problems I am having are definitely software related? I am not familiar with the AHT, don't know exactly what it does, nor how I can interpret a "clean" result...
    Many thanks for any advice/tips.

No indeed (just "Colin" is fine...)
My problems have mostly been documented by other people, and I have just been monitoring the discussions on these issues.
Specifically (at the risk of getting off-topic):
    1) inconsistent shared server behaviour: I have 3 other macs at home - an iBook and a G4 MiniMac running Tiger, and a G4 tower, also running Leopard - and most of the time, the tower doesn't show up at all, but I can connect to it via CMD-K, the MiniMac shows up in the sidebar, but won't let me connect, and the iBook, when it is running, behaves normally. Oh, screen sharing doesn't work either: it tries connect but hangs (except for the iBook, which works). I could connect to all four quite normally after upgrading to 10.5.0, using the sidebar icons. Everything worked fine until sometime after the 10.5.1 update, when suddenly everything went pear-shaped. Nothing has changed in the configs of the other machines, and the iBook and the MiniMac are identical in terms of software config (but behave differently as regards this problem?!?)
Closing Airport and reopening it makes the icons reappear in the sidebar (all of them, G4 tower included), as does relaunching the Finder, but doesn't change the behaviour: I still can't connect. When I try to use the sidebar icon for the tower, it disappears (the icon...)
As far as I can tell, trying to operate shares from the G4 tower works as Apple intended (although I admit I have not exhaustively tested every option, as I don't have unlimited time...)
    2) Lost my printer connections, both at work and at home. I managed to reestablish them at work, but I tried so many things that finally I'm not sure what actually worked. No dice at home (shared printer on the MiniMac... same problem as (1) I guess.)
    3) the dreaded Keynote spontaneous reboot problem (I placed a reply about that last night here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6630702#6630702
    4) diverse weird things, like
4a)iCal which had doubled all my events the last time I opened it. I had to manually delete one copy of every event I had entered, whereas I made these entries several weeks ago, and had consulted them many times... I'm thinking this is perhaps a result of the brutal reboots caused by (3)? Having deleted all the doubles, iCal seems to be behaving normally again.
4b)screen resolutions on my slave screen suddenly failing to select properly. I move my MacBook between two different external monitors, one at work, one at home, and their resolutions are different. Initially the MacBook had no trouble detecting and correctly setting the resolutions for the two screens, then suddenly my home screen went weird on me, and required a manual reset. Again, this was a once-off, and does not seem to be repeating (yet).
4c)sluggish performance with some apps that are normally quite snappy, like Firefox, which seems to hang a lot loading pages, Keynote (saving is often painfully slow), and indeed, trying to copy a 250Mb file from the tower to the MacBook via Airport (having connected using CMD-K) said it was going to take 33 hrs, which I thought was a bit rich...
4d) hot-swapping a usb pin for a keyboard+optical mouse receiver from the tower to the MacBook sometimes causes something inexplicable to happen to the MacBook's keyboard: both the Caps and the NumLock LEDs come on, and the keyboard has jumped into some config other than what it is normally in (French). I have not been able to determine what the keyboard actually thinks it is when this occurs (3 times now). The command keys (ctrl, alt, cmd) do not appear to work at all. Rebooting corrects it.
All up, pretty irritating, and a huge time waster, as you can well imagine. I stuck a bit of a rant on the discussions the other day in a moment of intense frustration, which got zapped by the moderators (probably not unreasonably!), but not before someone replied suggesting that it might be bad RAM, hence my questions here.

  • Apple Hardware Test software for late '07 Macbook?

Where do I get the Apple Hardware Test software for a late '07 Macbook?  Original disk is long lost and it doesn't appear Apple has this up for download.
The battery is not taking any charge, totally dead after 772 cycles.  But don't know if its the battery or the Macbook's internal battery charging hardware.

Using How to identify MacBook models your Macbook is a Macbook 3,1. At this link https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest click on Macbook3,1 link which will download the AHT software. Here is the direct link - MacBook3,1 Mac-F22788C8.

  • Power PC G5 continues to crash after OS re-install and hardware tests.

I have a Power PC G5 (2005) running 10.4. and have had trouble with crashing within a minute or two of booting or re-booting, and this after absolutely no trouble for 5 years and regular updates. After looking up the issue and potential fixes, I ran through a battery of possible solutions including repairing the permissions. Still no go.( I installed 3rd party RAM back in Jan of this year, but no problems until Mid September. Ran Hardware tests and everything passed.) I reinstalled the OS from the original discs thinking it was a last resort but a sure fix believing it to be software...crashed in 2 minutes after the first boot (post install)....from what I am hearing / reading it could still be the HD or RAM, but since it passed the Hardware test, I'm a little confused... Any suggestions?
I have had some recommendations by BDAquq and will follow up on those...BDAqua recommended posting a new topic.

BD is right on Hardware Test not doing a very good memory test. Memtest is better, as it does more of the litany of tests that are traditional, going back many decades to tests you manually keyed into the first few bytes of RAM on the first mini-computers. (That was fun, believe me.)
Having said that, one strategy is to selectively remove RAM in pairs and reboot to see if the problem continues. That may need to be repeated, swapping DIMMs in and out to see if one of them has a problem. If the problem persists when all of the DIMM modules have at one time or another been swapped out, then you can rule out memory. If it goes away, you have found your culprit.
If that doesn't locate a bad DIMM, then you have to start looking at panic logs to see what is going on there. I discovered a bad USB device in that manner a couple of years ago (wireless mouse transceiver) so it can be done.
Not to play off on the last paragraph, but these problems sometimes devolve into a "mouse hunt" like in the movie with Nathan Lane. Hopefully, you can ftrack down the cause of this very annoying development.

  • Hardware Test Error on Macbook Pro 09

I did a hardware test on my 2009 Macbook Pro and received an error. The error code is 4mem/4/40000000:0xaa2fe298.   has anyone encountered this before? Does this mean my hard drive is going bad?

    Hi chantal.raw,
After reviewing your post it sounds as though your Mac is constantly rebooting. Based on the information you have provided, it appears your Mac needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

found somewhere a link to a hardware test code list, that said 9972 could be the cable (ribbon?) to the drive needed to be reset, replaced, or the harddrive replaced.
our local New Orleans 'official' Apple Tech guy calimed it was the harddrive and not worth replacing.  he whined that it would take hours, tho the guys on ifixit claimed only half an hour.
i have since got a refurb MacBook (even older it turns out) with Tiger, but I miss my 15 incher Powerbook. (on very tight budget)
the battery got zapped by lightning last year and have struggled with it ever since. it won't fully recharge.
Right now have got it on the AC without the battery to try to charge the backup battery.
I have managed to restore it several times after crashing, inspite of my tech guy claiming otherwise. but have never really opened it up besides just looking at the memory slots. just one filled with 512 card.
    so any advice, or suggestions.
I've been messing with my Power book for like 10 hours and finally finished replacing the hard drive. (just installing the software and all the updates took almost 2 hours by itself) Now it boots up every few times and the hardware test still gives me -9972 error.

    My friend. Do not despair.
Firstly, you have a backup. Kudos.
Secondly, i suspect the hard drive in the machine is more than just a few years old. Hard drives die. I suspect the hard drive is the issue, not the cable.
Thirdly, it is worth changing the hard drive and take the ifixit advice. Simple to change. If it will be your first time changing the hard drive, just be organized and follow the steps carefully.
Now, before we decided it is the hard drive we need to confirm this.
I would check if SMART reports favorable conditions for the drive. Disk utility can tell you.
If good then I would zero out the drive. This allows the drive to excercise every sector and will build confidence of a well prepared drive going forward.
You can then restore from backup.
The other option is to replace the internal HD with a new one, perhaps with more storage.
As an FYI, I replaced the drive on my powerbook G3 and it's faster, quite , has more storage and gives me some peace of mind. Worth the money. The little guy runs beautifully.

  • Hardware Test Error Message - Mass Storage Error code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0

I have an imac 15" flat Panel, 700 MHz . after getting the flashing question mark, running or trying to run all the standard tests, (pram, Software Restore, disk repair, reinstall, kernel repairs) I never see the hard drive or volume. I saw it was a maxtor HD with 0 bytes at one point.
I now ran the Apple Hardware Test think I lost the Hard Drive...this is the feed back:
    Airport- Passed
    Logic Board - Passed
    Mass Storage - Error Detected
Memory - Has Not been Run yet
    Modem - Device Found
Video RAM - Has not been run yet
Error Code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0
Could anyone help me diagnose the issue? I think I can replace the HArd Drive myself, if I knew this was the problem and what I need to buy to replace.
    Thanks,

I have a different take to a brody having replaced my hard disk and opened my iMac G4 up several times. Many people find that Apple Authorized Service Providers tend to give extortionate quotes for such repairs. Feel free to get a quote yourself. I'll provide the same advice I've given to many many other Apple Discussions users who have successfully replaced their hard disk themselves.
The iMac uses a standard desktop PC hard drive. It is 3.5" wide and in the iMac G4 uses the IDE connection. The iMac 700MHz 15" has an ATA66 bus so can use ATA66, ATA100 or ATA133 drives but not ATA33 or SATA. You should buy a 7,200rpm drive with a cache of 8Mb or higher as this also increases the speed over the original 5,400rpm drive installed so you should get a performance increase.
Here is a list of suitable hard drives.
It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be very cautious. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:
    MacWorld
    xlr8yourmac
    Service Manuals
I've also taken a fair few photos which you can find here.
I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac's drive database so get other people's experiences first.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a $5 part).
The hard disk should be set to Master (link).
Some iMac G4 700MHz users have reported that they are unable to address hard drives larger that 128GB, there is an application called SpeedTools that can be used to overcome this addressing limitation.
You might also give consideration to installing a 512MB PC133 DIMM or an 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer burner whilst you do this update; both of which will have to be removed during the process.
You must be very careful around the video connector in the iMac; it really is very fragile. In fact there is no need to touch it at all in my experience.
It is possible that the ATA controller on the iMac's logic board has failed rather than the hard disk. Given the cost of the logic-board it would not be cost-effective for an iMac G4 700MHz.
Let us know how you get on.

  • How do I run Extended Apple Hardware Test imac 21.5 mid-2010 mavericks

How do I run Extended Apple Hardware Test imac 21.5 mid-2010 mavericks?  I have tried to start my computer holding down the "D" key but my iMac simply just restarts as normal.
I have checked the list of iMacs that can be upgraded to do an internet Extended Apple Hardware Test and I do not have one of those computers.
I cannot find any solution as yet.
I do not have the start up disks or the usb disks.

You can't run the hardware test without the installation discs.
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
