Hardware Test Error Message - Mass Storage Error code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0

I have an imac 15" flat Panel, 700 MHz . after getting the flashing question mark, running or trying to run all the standard tests, (pram, Software Restore, disk repair, reinstall, kernel repairs) I never see the hard drive or volume. I saw it was a maxtor HD with 0 bytes at one point.
I now ran the Apple Hardware Test think I lost the Hard Drive...this is the feed back:
Airport- Passed
Logic Board - Passed
Mass Storage - Error Detected
Memory - Has Not been Run yet
Modem - Device Found
Video RAM - Has not been run yet
Error Code ata 1/6/8 HD: 2,0
Could anyone help me diagnose the issue? I think I can replace the HArd Drive myself, if I knew this was the problem and what I need to buy to replace.
Thanks,

I have a different take to a brody having replaced my hard disk and opened my iMac G4 up several times. Many people find that Apple Authorized Service Providers tend to give extortionate quotes for such repairs. Feel free to get a quote yourself. I'll provide the same advice I've given to many many other Apple Discussions users who have successfully replaced their hard disk themselves.
The iMac uses a standard desktop PC hard drive. It is 3.5" wide and in the iMac G4 uses the IDE connection. The iMac 700MHz 15" has an ATA66 bus so can use ATA66, ATA100 or ATA133 drives but not ATA33 or SATA. You should buy a 7,200rpm drive with a cache of 8Mb or higher as this also increases the speed over the original 5,400rpm drive installed so you should get a performance increase.
Here is a list of suitable hard drives.
It's pretty fiddly to work inside an iMac G4 so you must be very cautious. Always take anti-static precautions. Here are three options for guiding you through the procedure:
MacWorld
xlr8yourmac
Service Manuals
I've also taken a fair few photos which you can find here.
I'd advise reading the reports on the xlr8yourmac's drive database so get other people's experiences first.
You must replace the Thermal Paste when you close the iMac up or it will overheat.
It's probably worth replacing the PRAM Battery whilst you're in there as these have a finite life (once they fail to re-charge you may start to run in to snags - it's only a $5 part).
The hard disk should be set to Master (link).
Some iMac G4 700MHz users have reported that they are unable to address hard drives larger that 128GB, there is an application called SpeedTools that can be used to overcome this addressing limitation.
You might also give consideration to installing a 512MB PC133 DIMM or an 18x DVD±RW Dual Layer burner whilst you do this update; both of which will have to be removed during the process.
You must be very careful around the video connector in the iMac; it really is very fragile. In fact there is no need to touch it at all in my experience.
It is possible that the ATA controller on the iMac's logic board has failed rather than the hard disk. Given the cost of the logic-board it would not be cost-effective for an iMac G4 700MHz.
Let us know how you get on.

  • "mass storage" error

Suddenly began to have problems with my powerbook 2 days ago. Strange fluctuations in screen brightness with corresponding audible surges from the speakers. I reset the power management unit and the problem seemed to have been solved. Now, the system locked up giving me all kinds of odd errors: for example, while using iWeb I could not publish because the disk was full despite there being plenty of free space on my hard drive and on iDisk; trying to save in pages or iWeb gives an error with a strange number that I failed to note.
My worst fear being the loss of data, I quickly decided to hook up the powerbook in Target Disk mode to my girlfriend's iMac to transfer critical data for safe keeping. However, the iMac won't recognize the disk though in system profile it's listed under the "firewire" tab. I then ran the Apple Hardware Test and got the following error for "mass Storage"
    "Error*Code... 2STF/8/3:ATA-100ata-6-MASTER"
Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on here?
One thing to note, believe it or not my dog (got to love her) ate through my DVD collection which included my Tiger install DVD. So, booting from that DVD is not an option. Any ideas, thoughts, hints, spectulations, or intuitions would be much appreciated.

If you ever see an error with the Apple Hardware Test, you will have to take your Mac in for service to repair it. That appears to indicate a physical/hardware problem with your hard drive. It will probably need to be replaced. It could be an issue with your logic board and the ATA bus itself, but that's a little less likely.
If you send the PowerBook in for hard drive service, it may come back with a new hard drive and the same version of Mac OS X installed that came with your PowerBook when you bought it. AppleCare support will send you a new set of install disks, but they may charge you around $60 to replace them. If your PowerBook came with Mac OS X 10.4, you may not be able to use a retail copy of Tiger to re-install.

  • Mass Storage Error Code

My iMac G5 will not boot OS X. The hardware tester gave me an error code when I ran an extended test. Under Mass Storage the error code "2STF/8/3:S - ATA Bus 0 - Master" appeared. What does this error code mean?

Welcome to Discussions - unfortunately, that code means you need a new hard drive. If you can get hold of another computer, boot into Target Disk Mode and use Data Rescue to get the data off the drive, that would be good (unless you have a bootable clone/backup).
Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news, but please post back with what you were able to do.

  • Help! mass storage error! please help

i was getting frequent crashes in FCP with a Xserve RAID hooked up via fiber channel card for media storage. i'd get the spinning beach ball and would have to do a manual shut down, approx every 20 minutes.
i did a complete erase and install of both system software and final cut pro software. still had problems.
i did the apple hardware test and got the following error code - MASS STORAGE: 2 STF/2/3: SLOT-3, Channel: 1, ID:0, LUN:
i got this error code ONLY when the RAID was hooked up, otherwise everything passed the test. the RAID mounts fine and in the RAID admin tools, everything gets a green light.
since i am under a deadline and don't have a lot of time to troubleshoot, i rented another G5, bought a new fiber channel card with new cables, and hooked it up to the RAID.
i am still getting the same error. again, the RAID array appears on the desktop, and the RAID admin tools finds everything ok - the fiber channel link ups, etc., check out ok.
i really need to sort this out ASAP!! if anyone has any suggestions for me, i'd be most grateful - thank you

    Hey Kappy,
I haven't seen that specific error before (prob since I hardly ever do apple hardware tests), but the spinning beach ball and the restarting does sound very familiar.
If you've been getting this on both machines, my first guess is going to be a failing drive, since that can easily cause beachballs and hangs. Usually errors come up in RAID Admin, but I've personally had at least 5 times where a drive spazzes and there's no error at all to warn you (and of course applecare wont replace a drive or do anything about it til it happens, and you're screwed with performance until then) Possible things to do to troubleshoot:
    1) Play a video clip in FCP and loop it. Meanwhile, check the raid's blue LED activity lights and see if any of them are out of sync (not blinking in tandem with the rest) If so, chances are that's your problem drive. If the machine starts to spazz, from what i've seen, if its a drive problem, that one drive's LED will stay solid while the others blink seldomely, which means that drive is working overtime to keep up, but can't.
    2) Run drive conditioning from RAID Admin (I believe its only available under version 1.5). This will run for a while and is a great way to force the array to reveal any errors or failures in any of the drives. If you have a problem drive, this will be the best way to force it to turn yellow or red.
For time constraints/deadlines, once you find out what the problem drive is and if the blue light is acting very erradically, drive conditioning will usually trigger the yellow or red light immidately (to where you can call apple and get it replaced under applecare). If you cant wait that long, pull the drive while its still green, and the raid will run in a degraded state (but your performance will be about back to normal). Just make sure and realize that you're not protected in Raid 5 anymore at that point. Even though, this has saved me in deadlines when I had a busted drive and couldn't play back a single stream of DV.
As a seperate comment, going out on a limb and speculating (So dont hold me to it), if it was a drive issue, judging by your error, I would guess it's drive 3.
    NOTE: Always have a backup

  • Imac G5 (pre isight). Mass Storage Error

I have an imac G5 (pre-isight). Using Tiger. Recently it has been playing up. Two main problems: starting up and waking after sleep mode.
    *Starting up issues*
There doesnt seem to be a consistent problem here. Sometimes it hangs on the grey apple screen, sometimes grey probitory sign screen. Sometimes it hangs on a black screen with white writing. On about the 10th to 20th time of rebooting, it seems to startup and work fine.
    *Sleep issues*
If I leave the computer to go into sleep mode, it tends to freeze in whatever application is open. Especially Safari.
I have tried numerous fixes. I've reset PRAM, done the SMU thing. Repaired and verified disk many times. Repaired and verified permissions. I've archived and installed and archived and erased. There's barely any software on here apart from the operating software and MS Office (legal). I'm using an apple keyboard (wired) and a wired mouse. There's no important info on here so am happy to wipe everything.
Finally i did a hardware test and received a "mass storage error" (only appeared for the extended test)...
    2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus 0 –Master
Having looked up several forums i replaced the hard drive. (Made sure it was compatible, similar size and same specs as original). Reinstalled software and got all the latest updates. Seemed to be working quite well for a day or so, although there was a few 'permissions' error which seemed easily fixed.
Today i awoke the imac and it had frozen. Back to it's old tricks. Tried restarting and got grey screens, black screens etc. Repaired permissions. Ran another hardware test and getting the same error message about mass storage!
So if it's not the hard drive, what's wrong for my imac? Is it time to just dispose it?
Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

The recall ended many moons ago, and it's a capacitor problem, they all need replacing, those in the power supply as well, probably.
If you are handy with a soldering gun, have steady hands and are good at repairing electronics, you can do it yourself. Look at [welovemacs.com] or [synaptech.com] for parts and advice.

(I did a backup on an external drive not long before it failed)
have gotten lost in my research on apple forums and knowledge base.
    From the original install discs:
The Hardware test gives the error.
    "2STF/8/3 ATA-100 ata-6-Master (-9972)"
The Disc utility does see my harddrive but fails to repair with the messge:
    1 volume cannot be repaired,
    'Invalid  node Structure'
    Disk 'no valid packets (-9997)'
I do have a useless partition from TechTool 4 and had successfully run the programs just before Powerbook failed.
aid everything was ok, with no warnings.
found somewhere a link to a hardware test code list, that said 9972 could be the cable (ribbon?) to the drive needed to be reset, replaced, or the harddrive replaced.
our local New Orleans 'official' Apple Tech guy calimed it was the harddrive and not worth replacing.  he whined that it would take hours, tho the guys on ifixit claimed only half an hour.
i have since got a refurb MacBook (even older it turns out) with Tiger, but I miss my 15 incher Powerbook. (on very tight budget)
the battery got zapped by lightning last year and have struggled with it ever since. it won't fully recharge.
Right now have got it on the AC without the battery to try to charge the backup battery.
I have managed to restore it several times after crashing, inspite of my tech guy claiming otherwise. but have never really opened it up besides just looking at the memory slots. just one filled with 512 card.
    so any advice, or suggestions.
I've been messing with my Power book for like 10 hours and finally finished replacing the hard drive. (just installing the software and all the updates took almost 2 hours by itself) Now it boots up every few times and the hardware test still gives me -9972 error.
    <Re-Titled By Host>

    My friend. Do not despair.
Firstly, you have a backup. Kudos.
Secondly, i suspect the hard drive in the machine is more than just a few years old. Hard drives die. I suspect the hard drive is the issue, not the cable.
Thirdly, it is worth changing the hard drive and take the ifixit advice. Simple to change. If it will be your first time changing the hard drive, just be organized and follow the steps carefully.
Now, before we decided it is the hard drive we need to confirm this.
I would check if SMART reports favorable conditions for the drive. Disk utility can tell you.
If good then I would zero out the drive. This allows the drive to excercise every sector and will build confidence of a well prepared drive going forward.
You can then restore from backup.
The other option is to replace the internal HD with a new one, perhaps with more storage.
As an FYI, I replaced the drive on my powerbook G3 and it's faster, quite , has more storage and gives me some peace of mind. Worth the money. The little guy runs beautifully.

    Not a good error.
    Error 1 or -1
This may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues, and restore your device on a different known-good computer. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
"may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

WZZZ answered about where to get iStat. And do check the SMART status. If it is an overheating problem due to a fan or logic board problem, your hard drive is possibly cooking itself to death. If so it isn't a faulty hard drive even though the hard drive might fail. So assuming it's a temperature problem, even if you are able to repair things on the disk with software, that is working on symptoms, not causes. I could be wrong however.
RE: AppleCare: Your iMac came with one year of AppleCare (Apple's warranty program), but within the first year you can buy 2 more years. You have to extend by the one year anniversary of purchase of the computer. Your 10,1 is too old to still be in the first year, and since you asked what it was, I'm sure you don't have it. Bottom line meaning is that whatever this problem turns out to be, you'll have to pay for it. Unless there is something like this. It is for 2011 iMacs with certain Seagate drives. You can put in your serial number for fun, but it looks like yours is too old. Lastly, some people have had Apple help them anyway if it is just out of warranty, but many have not. Your machine is one of these. Type in 10,1 in the search box. Is there an Apple Store near you? Just b/c it's out of warranty doesn't mean you shouldn't have it looked at by Apple. But no one here can say at all what Apple will or will not do.
Hope you get it taken care of!

I'm trying to change email address on my Apple ID since the email registered for the account has been hacked and I can't access it anymore. The email I want to change to is connected to another Apple ID I created about 4 years ago, though I successfully changed the email on that account as well. So the email I would like to use for my main Apple ID shouldn't be "locked" anymore.
Though, when trying to change the email on my Apple ID I get an error message (in Swedish, so this is a direct translate from google): "This e-mail address is your email address for notification. It can not be used as the Apple ID or primary email. Choose a different address."
I'm not really sure what this means or how I can fix this.
It means exactly what it says... The email Address is in Use. You cannot re-use it.

  • I ran a hardware test and this was my error

I ran a hardware test and this was my error#4MEM/40/40000006:B:1 C:0 R:1 - what does it mean?

Sure, your Mac Pro's memory is installed on two cards that you can remove, and subsequently inspect or remove the RAM. Read here to determine where it is and what to do:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433
If you're lucky, merely removing and reinstalling the memory modules may clear the fault. If not, it is possible one or more of the DIMMs (Dual In-line Memory Modules) has failed or is no longer meeting the Mac Pro's requirements.
Memory is not difficult to install and is not terribly expensive. Most vendors have a lifetime guarantee.

    Hi Mahendra,
There are several reasons for the release not happeneing.
    1. The issue could be in the selection of release type
    2. Scope of selection
    3. Strategy profile
Please check whether the selection parameters are considered are right for release to happen.

Errors 3000-3999 (3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443.
Update to the latest version of iTunes.
Verify the computer's date and time are accurate.
Check that your security or firewall software is not interfering with ports 80 or 443, or with the server gs.apple.com.
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
An entry in your hosts file may be redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see "Unable to contact the iOS software update server gs.apple.com" above).
Internet proxy settings can cause this issue. If you are using a proxy, try without using one.
