Hardware Test Error on Macbook Pro 09

I did a hardware test on my 2009 Macbook Pro and received an error. The error code is 4mem/4/40000000:0xaa2fe298.   has anyone encountered this before? Does this mean my hard drive is going bad?

  • How can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3

Does anyone know how can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3. Thanks.

    Sean and Andy -
I have to agree with Andy here. I am having the same problem on a mid 2010 MBP (6,2). I have already read the AHT info provided by Sean's link, and they are less than helpful. I'm sure they will be helpful to those who find that they work, but they are confusing if this is not the case. For example, my MBP(6,2) came with ONE (not two) installation disks, so the instructions don't work for me. Another issue is the instructions confound the descriptions related to the MBP, the original (delivered) software (OS X version), and the current installed OS X upgrade software.
So here's what does NOT work for me...
         (A) I cannot install 'Disk 2', since I never received this with my original (new) purchase in mid 2010.
         (B) I have checked my firmware versions and they are all up to date, as per Apple's information.
         (C) As suggested in another thread, I looked for /Library/Core Services/.diagnostics and it was NOT present. I followed his instructions, downloaded the correct (I believe) dmg, and installed it. It is in the correct place, and I can see all the invisible files using Pathfinder.
         (D) When I re-start holding down the D key (immediately), it just goes through the normal boot routine; no evidence of AHT.
(E.1) When I re-start holding down OPT-D, I get a spinning globe, and then it prompts me for a network (wi-fi) connection.
(E.2) For some unknown reason, the prompt identifies between 2 and 5 of my --neighbors'--  routers, but does not show mine. (??!!)
(E.3) The routers are listed alphabetically; however, my router SHOULD be at the top of the list by this criterion, but it is nowhere to be seen.
(E.4) The 'internet recovery' process then allows me to enter a network name AND password. I do this, for my current wi-fi router, and the process rejects it as an incorrect login ID. It is NOT an incorrect login ID!
So, now asking Sean and Andy (or anyone else) for further suggestions... ???  As Andy suggested, many people ask questions here because they have -already- worked through the 'official' recommendations, and have found them to be inadequate.
Any advice would be appreciated!  TIA.

  • Separate Apple Hardware Test DVD for MacBook Pro original??

Hey Folks, I'm trying to verify whether or not the MacBook Pro came with the Apple Hardware Test as a separate DVD disk. The "MacBook Pro" Install disk references it but I can't seem to find the software on that DVD. Any guesses out there would be appreciated. I'm about to perform an upgrade for Tiger to Leopard and wnat to give my laptop the "hairy eyeball" before I begin.
    Many Thanks,
    Peter

Insert the DVD and start up the computer with the D key held down. The Hardware Test is on a separate area of the DVD and isn't normally accessible.

Bring it in for service.  Anytime hardware test detects an error, that's an indication the service department needs to fix it.

  • No wi if hardware is installed on MacBook Pro?

I see wifi logo that has an X on it by saying "no wi-fi hardware is installed after Genius Bar took tests on my MacBook Pro and it said passed. So, again I have the same problem. Does that mean it has to replace new airport card?

    1. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    2. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:

    Best.

It's problematical that one can't communicate directly with Apple to resolve these problems

Mac mini server: Hardware test error on Hard Drive
'checking for slow read failures': ERROR - Target device access failure - Test failed.
CAN I ACCESS HD (which is our data server) EVER AGAIN? IF SO, HOW?
Meanwhile we wonder if this is really a hardware error. It all happened during writing a time machine backup.
Probably while writing it, some data was relocated by accident, but we can not 100%-sure remember the sequence of actions :/
    This is our trauma history:
    - time machine got increasingly slower in writing a backup
    - we quit the backup
    - we switched off the mac mini (on power button)
    - we switched on the mac mini
    - we stopped time machine to the rules
    - we shut down mac mini via command
    - we booted the mac mini in save mode
    - we see a loading bar
    - no progress after 10th of loading bar
    - switched off (power button)
    - when we now switch on the loading bar below the apple-logo is all we see + the little wheel
    - we started with cmd+alt+p+r pressed
    - mac mini restarted but showed the loading bar scenario without progress again
    - we started with 'd' pressed and did the hardware test (see above)
    - we started with 'alt' pressed but it does not give us the recoverydrive to run the last backup
    ANY IDEAS?
IS IT A SOFTWARE- OR HARDWARE ERROR?
    THX IN ADVANCE!

Is Temperature Monitor an app or a device?  If it's a temperature problem then that is essentially a design problem.  Two drive failures in the same Mac mini server in four months combined with the fact that they're not really user serviceable already has me 90% on the way back to more pragmatically designed Linux servers.  I think it would be foolish to waste any more money on these minis for my business hosting.

Thanks - Even though I'm years out of warranty I got chat help from Apple (I said they should help me since the codes aren't published.)  We covered three different questions, and although I didn't get a specific decoding of the error code, I got confirmation of what other comments here imply - it might have helped that I indicated I'd already been here - and useful links to how to do back ups, including to CD(s). (I don't have a lot of data on this computer yet)
Now I need to figure out how to decide how hot-to-the-touch is "too hot" for the metal frame at the top of the iMac to decide whether I'm getting adequate fan performance or insufficient.  While chatting I initially reported it was cool at the bottom and warm at the top.  Apple hadn't asked, but their response prompted me to feel it again, and I'd say the top was hot, not warm - I updated but Apple didn't comment further except to conclude after addressing the other questions that I should take it in for further assessment - don't really want to bother with that.

Trying to track down fast running fan that will not reset and this error came up.

only apple techncians have access to what those codes mean.  It is sensor related, but as it is a hardware problem, you need to bring it into an Apple store or AASP to have it correctly diagnosed and fixed.

  • 2010 17" MacBook Pro i5 Apple Hardware Test Error 4SNS/1/40000000'TmOP

While presenting a keynote the other evening a spinning rainbow wheel was being displayed as I transitioned between several of the slides. That was embarrassing for me and was very concerning seeing as this is a new top of the line machine and is just barely a week old. I ended up deciding to run the Apple Hardware Test by holding the D key during startup. Unfortunately it gave me the following error during the extended test: 4SNS/1/40000000'TmOP
I called Apple earlier today and spoke to a supervisor who told me that this was a normal occurrence in all MacBook Pros. Is this really true? Could someone diagnosis this error further for me as I certainly was not satisfied with the answer I received earlier. Should I exchange the computer within the 14 day return policy for another while I can? If this is just a normal occurrence then I'm okay with that, but something just doesn't seem right here. Please advise me as to how I should proceed, thank you.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's a Temperature Sensor error and if it appears in repeated Hardware tests it most certainly is not normal by any measure. Run the test again and if you get that same thing take it back to the store where you got it, be polite but firm and insist they exchange at no cost.

Hi, could the Retina Owners please perform an Apple Hardware Test (Pressing D while booting)? WITHOUT the Power Adapter connected ist Shows an error? So you have this "error" too? Thanks Ben

I didn't read it on the Apple Hardware Test tips page, but I think I remember reading (somewhere) that the power adapter should be plugged in on notebooks when running AHT.
Maybe that's the case and, hence, your error?

  • How to test hardware on an old MacBook Pro that is slowing down.

I have the very first-gen MacBook Pro 2.0gHz Core Duo, 2gb ram.  I have been using this laptop as my primary since I got it, mostly for development work (Java, Objective-C, Web, etc), but also email, general web surfing, and the occational game (although, not in a while).
Recently, I noticed things were starting to "slow down".  Well, not slow down so much as things would get long pauses.  For instance, I hit a site in Google Chrome, and the app sits there for like 20-30sec of longer, as if the window is frozen, then *poof*, it draws the page.  Sometime, Chrome will even pop up asking if I want to kill the page.  It is not the only application that seems to be suffering from this, I just spend a LOT of time on the web, so I tend to notice it much more.
Even more recently, my SpringSource Tool Suite (STS, a custom Eclipse with a bunch of SpringSource plugins) started acting up too.  Mostly when I start the Roo Shell and execute a command, STS (read Eclipse) will show the command as "executing", but it seemed to never run.  I thought it was maybe a problem with STS or the Roo Shell plugin, but yesterday I ran something as a test, then got a phone call and didn't come back for some time.  To my surprise after more than 40min of just sitting there the command ran.  Once it ran, it ran in full, normal speed (the command I ran was to rebuild the Eclipse project files using Maven).  So, what I thought was frozen was merely paused for a long period of time, just like what I was seeing in Chrome.
So, this has lead me to believe I either have some sort of hardware issue, some sort of heat issue (I have seen this on Wintel laptops where the processor "speed steps" down to almost 33mHz), or some sort of software issue.  I really don't want to have to re-install OS X, if I can avoid it.  I did boot off the original disks that came with my laptop and ran the Hardware Test, but it came back with no errors.  I have iStat Pro installed as well, and the fan speeds are usually around 1800-2000rpm, sometimes jumping to 4000+rpm.  CPU tempuratures report around 151º.  I also ran the Disk Utility off my 10.6 disks.  I do know that my DVD burner no longer burns disks, but it hasn't for more than a year.
    Laptop specs:
      - MacBook Pro, Model MacBookPro1,1
      - OS X 10.6.8
      - 2.0gHz Core Duo w/ 2gb DDR2 RAM
      - Toshiba MK3252GSX 320gb HDD (replacement for factory 120gb HDD over 1.5yrs ago due to space issues)
      - I recently replaced the battery, as the old one had expanded.  I use the laptop on wall power 99% of the time.
    Thanks,
    Mike Bauer

As mentioned above, I did do this.  What I am not so certain is how intensive this test is.  Stated another way: If this was ran and passed 100%, does this mean everything on my laptop is 100% functional, like the fans, processor, cooling, memory, etc?  The drive also checked out when I did the Disk Utility from the 10.6 install CDs, and the S.M.A.R.T. check indicates no disk errors.
Maybe I should take it into a Genius and have them look at it.  Just not sure how much that will cost me, and its an old laptop, so I don't want to put too much into it.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Quad - Hardware Test error

    Hi all !
I am trying to help out someone in another state with their Mac Pro problem so bear with me ...
The machine is a MacPro 2009 I believe, 2.66GHz Quad. and it's having startup issues - at the moment it's NOT starting so I am told !
Before it went totally down someone was able to run the Apple Hardware Test on it and got an error code -
    4SNS/1/40000000: TMA4- 128.000
Ive searched and found the 4SNS refers to a possible sensor problem, but the TMA part of the code is unknown ...
It is also showing 1 of the 4 red ram led lights so there looks like a ram issue as well, but Im just wondering if anyone can shed more light on the error above so I can try to pinpoint the problems closer ?
At the moment Im being told by the locals it might be the logic board which of course is quite expensive ...
    Mitch

My rule of thumb when faced with multiple problems is to address any you can get your hands around, and the symptoms may change and clarify the other problem.
A RAM LED stuck on is a memory failure, and that is easy to fix -- remove or replace the failing module.
It is also possible the sensor complaint is about that module -- they have temp sensors on them.
If you are replacing modules in a 2009 or later, don't buy smaller than 8GB replacements, they are cheap enough now at about US$75 from
