Hardware test extended -- how long should it take?

Running an AHT on my iMac 21.5 Late 2009 (HD is about 300GB w/ 12GB RAM), and initial test was quick and no issues found.  Decided to then do extended test (just to be safe & curious to see what difference there was), but 2hrs in it was still showing it had a long way to go before finishing.
Questions:
Would extended AHT tests reveal anything serious the basic AHT does not test?
How long should an extended AHT take?  iMac seemed very hot at the time of the testing
I understand Apple Stores will do free 15min test; is the AHT basically same test store personnel would run?Without getting into detail (too convoluted to describe here as no real pattern to my issues w/ Imac), I basically want peace-of-mind that issues I'm having from difficulty ejecting volumes (system says disk is in use when doesn't appear to me it is) to Apple apps (iTunes, Safari, etc.) taking very long to open ever since I installed Mountain Lion.  I'm going through separate tracks to determine if issues are software-related (not hardware) but while I'm at it, I'd also like to safely rule out HW problem(s).
Thanks in advance.

1. The extended test looks for problems slowly, so it may find problems that a basic test can't find.
2. The extended test, depending on your memory, takes an hour or more, and it will increase if you have more memory. It's normal that you feel your computer hot during test, so don't worry.
3. Apple Hardware Test is different than that test. The test that Apple can do is more exact and it might detect problems you can't find in Apple Hardware Test. For example, problems with the graphic card or similar (Apple Hardware Test doesn't detect some problems)

How long should it take my iPad to charge?

What model iPad? 1,2,3,4 or mini? When you ask a question, you need to provide enough info to answer.
I assume you mean from near 0% to 100%.
Depending on the model, it takes 3 to about 8 hours.
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. How long should it take a well-qualified server admin to migrate from Tiger to Lion...
For a small company, if the Tiger server is running on a G4 Tower:
    -Roughly 500GB in user files
-Data resides on old-school ATA drives
    -OD Master - Kerberized
    -AFP
    -Mobile Homes
    -DHCP
    -DNS (for 2 domains)
    -FTP
    -iChat
    -Mail (non SSL)
    -NetBoot
    -Print Server
    -SWUPD
    -VPN
    -Hosting website using MySQL
    -User & Computer Management
    Considerations/Hurdles/Challenges:
-Tossing old G4 into garbage, upgrading Mini client to Snow Leopard, adding Lion iMac client to the LAN
-Fresh OS installs on the Mini and iMac
-Upgrading from CAT5 to CATE on the LAN (not it the walls - just loose cables)
-All new hardware must be sourced out (take some time to price compare)
-Must find a way to transfer data from ATA drives to SATA drives or Lion Server
-Company must not have any email downtime (MX Records to be modified on DNS Providers site)
-Servers hostname goes from "companyserver.company.com" to "server.company.com"
    -ISP blocks some SMTP ports
-DNS Provider doesn't support TSL/SSL SMTP
-Implementing a switch into the network
-Implementing a new router (for firewall and NAT) from ISP
    Upgrading to Lion Mini Server
    -All the same services
    -Using SSL
-Implementing Mobile Device Enrolment and Deployment
That should just about cover it. I'll add any other details/hurdles as they come to mind.
Can you guys give me your best guesstimate as to how many hours you think this job should take? I'd appreciate any feedback as to how long you guys think it'd take you to make this transition. I'm trying to plan, and we're going to be down-and-out, the boss NEEDS to know for how long.!
    Thanks in advance guys!

It's about a gigabyte, so if you have a slow connection, it might take some time.
But - you shouldn't be getting the beach ball - that's a different thing.
Can you do open Activity Monitor, or is it stuck completely?

  • DFSR - This member is waiting for initial replication for replicated folder SYSVOL Share - How long should it take?

Yesterday we were forced to perform a non-authoritative sync of the SYSVOL folder as replication had stopped because one of the DCs had been disconnected from it's replication partner for more than 60 days (caused by a unexpected shutdown and we did not
pick up on the fact replication had stopped until now).
I performed the non-authoritative sync of the SYSVOL folder and now the folder is in state 2

SYSVOL Share          Domain System Volume  2

    'NO_CLIENT_SITE:'. The first word after this string is the client name and the second word is the client IP address. The maximum size of the log(s) is controlled by the following registry DWORD value 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters\LogFileMaxSize';
the default is 20000000 bytes.  The current maximum size is 20000000 bytes.  To set a different maximum size, create the above registry value and set the desired maximum size in bytes.

  • How long should CHKDSK take ?

    Hi
I have XP installed on Parallels (not Boot Camp) and it crashes frequently.
When I restart XP it wants to run CHKDSK. When I allow it it quickly gets up to a percent complete (say 18% or 31% but no higher) then just stays there for hours and never seems to complete.
How long should it take ? If I check Activity Monitor then Parallel's CPU usage is low but variable so it seems to be doing something...
Should I just leave it to run all night maybe ?
    Thanks

DU doesn't have any support I know of for mapping out sectors. Either the drive will, or you can scan media using TechTool Pro. Speedtools has two programs, one to test media, and another that can auto assign new blocks, or attempt to force the drive to do so. It also has an indepth SMART test which can take about 45 minutes for a drive.
Even SoftRAID I don't think does but will alert if there is an I/O write error (and if anyone was going to, SoftRAID would).
Disk Warrior will write to system log and you can see if there are any used spares, how many left which a Google study found to be a good indicator of a failing drive.
Bad sectors that are used by partition tables require reformatting. DU does test non-user hidden partition table blocks, which is what may happen when DU fails to partition a drive. SoftRAID also tests the first and last 100 sectors, and you can begin and safely stop a zero-all of a drive before creating partitions.
Most of the time, you have to use the zero-all in DU or the more thorough 7-way write-erase to (hopefully) map out bad blocks. Say if TechTool Pro discovers bad media, which of course means losing all data, which is why I own Speedtools.
Chkdsk which does have the option, if you enable it, to map out bad sectors. Something you can't do normally with OS X. Which is one feature of Windows we seem to lack.

That's going to depend alot on your internet connection speed. 6.4 GB is alot of data, especially if your connection speed is slow (DSL) or low-end cable speeds of ~1.5 Mbps.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare -E
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:

These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • How long should it take to download Mountain Lion?

How long should it take to download and install Mountain Lion?  I have been downloading it for about 5 hours and it still has 1 gig to go.  My current OS X is 10.7.4

It depends on what bottlenecks you have interposed.
If you have a fast Ethernet connection, not cable Internet, that is not throttled by your ISP, and are using fast Ethernet on your local network, you should be able to download in about an hour.
If you are transmitting it over your wireless connection, it may take substantially longer.

  • HT4718 am trying to install OS X Lion for the first time. So far it has been downloading for about 2 hours. How long should it take?

    Can anyone help please?
Lion download to iMac has been running for about 2 hours and is still not halfway yet. How long should it take? should I cancel and start again?

1500Kbs is 1.5Mbs. That is Kilo bits per second. There are 8 bits to a byte so if you divide 1500 (or 1,500,000) by 8 you get 187500 bytes a second. Divide 3.5GBs (3,500,000,000), that capitol B is for Bytes, by that 187500 you get 18666.666 seconds. Which needs to be divided by 60 to get the minutes and then again by 60 to get the hours.
    5.1851xxx hours.
I use to have a 3Mbs DSL connection and it took me over 3 hours to download Lion. Now that I have a 19Mbs Cable connection it take about an hour to download and install.
So wait it will happen eventually. If you cancel and start again your are still going to wait 5+ hours.

  • Ripping DVD's - How long should it take?

How long should it take to rip a whole DVD? PQDVD seems the easiest, but it rips at 1x speed (or close to it). Are there programs out there that do it faster? Are there programs that are cheaper? $35 is a lot of money.

I use DVD Decryptor (free) to rip the VCD files from the DVD.
I then use Videora for iPod to encode them to MP4.
Time for DVD Decrypt is about 15 minutes for a 2 hour movie.
Time for Videora is about an hour and a half for a 2 hour movie (give or take a half hour).
DVD Decryptor needs to be set to Not split the files based on size, and there is another tab that asks if you want to split the VCD files at all. Both set to none, find in the options screen.
    Good luck!
