Hardware Test Key Combo? Mountain Lion & Snow Leopard Disc 1

Hi. I have an iMac i7 late 2009 with a fresh/clean install of Mountain Lion. I'd like to check it's hardware. What's the keyboard combo for both Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and Snow Leopard disc 1 (just in case Mountain Lion doesn't have it built-in) and when is the correct timing to press the combo? Should I shut-down (how long before I press ON) or restart?

Unless your Mac has built-in hardware test, you have to use the Original disk that came with the Mac (Snow Leopard Disk 1).
Put the disk in and restart. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the D key.

I;ve been trying to do the Apple Hardware Test with no success. I've tried holding down D and option-D yet nothing. My macbook just boots up as normal. It is recommended to download the EPI firmware upgrade fro Lion recovery. That one is just not compatible with my system and could not install it. What's next? I have an iMac version 10.4.11. Tried to get pogo.com, but am told I need to update my Adobe Flash Player. When I try to update/upgrade Adobe Flash Player, I'm told my iMac is too old.
Likewise when I try to do banking online, I'm told I need to update my Safari Web Browser, but when I try to update, I'm told my computer is too old.
Short of buying a new computer, WHAT DO I DO??

10.4.11 is Tiger.
If yours is a PPC based Mac (a G4 or G5) you can upgrade to Leopard 10.5.8 but no further. Leopard is no longer supported by or available from Apple so you will need to buy a vlack retail install disk from eBay or Amazon, and they cost around $200.
If yours is an Intel based Mac you can bypass Leopard and go straight to Snow Leopard 10.6.8:

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:

After installing it, my macbook would not restart. All i would see is the Apple and the twirling circle. To get back to be able to use internet i had to put Snow Leopard disc holding "C" key.

I did a software update check. It showed to update to 10.6.8v1.1. After installing it, my MacBook would not restart.
I have tried this more than once. After the install all that happens is i get the Apple emblem and the twirling circle. I have let that go for literaly a couple hours with no results.
To get to be able to use my Macbook i have had to install Snow Leopard by holding the C" key and re-installing Snow Leopard.
Any help would be appreciated. i Have purchased "Lion" and cant access App Store to install until this update is done.

That's why you can't access the App Store. Minimum requirement is v10.6.6
Install this combo update > Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
Then restart your Mac, open the App Store.
You can download Lion by clicking Redeem under Quick Links right side of the App Store window then entering the redemption code.

Macbook Pro - Lion - Snow Leopard - help please!

Hi there.
I've just bought a second-hand Macbook Pro through ebay which has come with Lion pre-installed. I keep being prompted to do a software update but can't do this as (my understanding is) the Lion software belongs to the previous owner and not the computer itself. The apple ID associated with lion is not mine, and I do not know the previous owners password.
I would like to do a clean install anyway to make sure I erase all the previous owners data and assumed I could do this by inserting my RETAIL copy of snow leopard (which I used to upgrade my original Macbook) into the new macbook pro, pressing C on start-up and then doing erase and install. This would then allow me to upgrade my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion via the app store and everything would properly assign over to me, I would legitimately own the software etc etc and all would be fine.
However, the Macbook seems to not like the Snow Leopard disc and on some further investigation it seems I can't 'downgrade' the software (even though I want to put it straight back up again). So my question is, what do I do now?! I'm assuming there is a way around this and someone helpful and clever will know what to do :-)

As the MacBook Pro you have bought came with OS X Lion, you can't install any older operating system because its hardware is not supported. That's the reason why you can't install Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
What you have to do is to contact with Apple in order to deauthorize the Mac and all its software (OS X, iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand) from the old owner's Apple ID > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 First try to do it, and if Apple tells you that the old owner has to do it, contact with him/her.
Near all people who sell their old Mac with OS X Lion or Mountain Lion preinstalled do the same error, and it's serious: if the hard drive gets damaged, for example, you won't be able to reinstall OS X, so you can't do anything

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

Installing Lion/Snow Leopard on external hd

Absolutely. This is how I do my upgrades for my MacBooks. I first install to the external drive, and then after I have verified that everything is working I swap the internal and external drives. When the Installer starts, you will have the option to select which disk you want to install on. If the drive is not already set up with a GUID partition table you will have to do that in Disk Utility before you can install Lion on it. During the installation you will have the option to move all your files and settings over from the internal drive.

Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion from Leopard for free?

I was in the Apple, Covent Garden store the other day and an assistant said that I could upgrade to Mountain Lion from Leopard for free in one CD. He told me to call a number which I did and the assistant over the phone had no idea about this offer.

You can't. The Mountain Lion upgrade is only free for people who purchased a new Mac on or after July 26 without it installed, and all of the computers which fall into that category shipped with Lion, not Leopard.

If they are the grey discs which came with the iMac, then they will be machine specific and will not work on the MBP anyway. You will need to purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard from the Apple Store for about $29 and upgrade from that. I presume your MBP is Intel and not G4.

Starting fresh with a SSD and I cannot find my Snow Leopard disc...

So I have a Mac Pro with OS X 10.6.8, 2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB ram, and I am trying to move my OS over to a Solid State Drive. I have the original instal disc for 10.5 but I cannot find my Snow Leopard disc.
So I installed 10.5 on the SSD but can't figure out anyway to upgrade to 10.6, at which point I can purchase Mountain Lion or whatever, but you can't upgrade beyond Snow Leopard without first having Snow Leopard, right?
I know I can "clone" my original SATA drive with Snow Leopard, but part of the reason I am doing this is to get rid of a bunch of the useless crap on that drive, so I'd like to avoid a full clone.
I know it's only $20 to buy a fresh version of Snow Leopard, but on 10.5 there is no App Store, and there doesn't seem to be anyway to purchase it online as a download. So I would need to go to a real life store or have it shipped, right?
So if there is some other way to upgrade or to clone JUST the OS without any of the other crap, that would be amazing!

Why not download and look at its options? I recommended for that and other reasons.
And yes you should move all your data to another drive. Keep what you have 'as is' and pull it as extra backup or in reserve.
Before you clone, install TRIM Enabler!
And after you clone, run Disk Utility's REPAIR DISK on the SSD -- just to be on the safest side.

You cannot. From a legal standpoint, the license agreement for OS X mandates that you run OS X only on Apple hardware. HP is not (yet) owned by Apple.
From a technical standpoint, your HP laptop doesn't use EFI, but rather an early predecessor called a BIOS. Apple is the only vendor of consumer computer hardware that uses EFI; other vendors reserve EFI for use in servers.
Secondly, Apple's operating systems support a rather limited number of configurations of video hardware and mainboard chipsets directly since they need only support those systems that they manufacture. You cannot use Windows software or drivers on OS X, so prior to installation, you would need to write your own hardware drivers for your laptop, create an OS X drive image on a Mac, and then modify that image with your drivers before putting it in the HP.
It will be simpler (and legal), to simply purchase a used Mac. Apple's online store has refurbished MacBook Airs starting at $850 and Mac Minis for $700. If you go to e-bay or craigslist, you'll find used Macs for considerably less.

The Tale of the Beeping Macbook - AKA- My Macbook Pro keeps beeping when trying to boot into Snow Leopard Disc's disk utility

Quick back story: about a month ago my macbook was falling and I caught it quickly, I had a game controller in my hand and it lightly hit it whilst I was catching it; the laptop made no contact with the floor, couch etc. Upon reveling in my epic matrix esque catch I noticed it was beeping and the screen was completely black - Horrified I held down the power button for a forced power down and then turned it back on to see that it was fine, along with no visible scars, dents etc to the chassis. Now flash forward to present day, and the macbook pro is only two months old (bought may 4th 2011) and I notice it's got some slightly irregular slow loading points when loading a browser, photoshop, etc. I do the standard disk utility to verify the disc and it says
"Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Invalid volume file count
(It should be 537095 instead of 537096)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 161641 instead of 161640)
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."
So I put in the snow leopard disc to go to the disk utility within, reboot the laptop, and it goes to the gray boot screen with the dark gray apple logo and stays there whilst doing the aforementioned beep from my spider-sense catch. Does anyone happen to know what is wrong? Would that tiny tap from my controller when catching it have caused this problem I have now? Is there anything I can do at home to fix this since I can't get to the disk utility on the snow leopard disk? Will Batman ever get out of the Joker's trap? Or am I better off just making a genius bar appointment? Thanks in advance.

Are you using the Snow Leopard disc that came with that Mac? A gray disc that came with a different Mac won't boot yours, and a Retail (white) disc with a version of OSX earlier than the one your Mac came with won't boot it, either.
If you don't have the right disc, do you have an external HD, or can you borrow one?
(By the way, your post shows you're running Tiger; you might want to update that.)

Hi. Don't worry it's nothing serious. Insert the Instal Disc (Snow Leopard) and press the C button while turning on the computer. Once you see the desktop, go to Utility and choose Disk Utility. Select the Macintosh Partition on the left window pane and then click on Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions on the bottom right corner. Wait for both processes to finish. Click on the Apple icon (top left corner) and choose quit. Your computer should restart. See if it reboots normally. If not you can always reinstall the OS following the same steps. Good luck!

On my newer 2009 iMac (which included Mac OS X 10.6) I just inserted that disc specific to the iMac and installed the drivers, but the disc for my Mac Pro is old (10.5.2) do I need to install the drivers on it or not? Can I just insert my Snow Leopard 10.6 disc to install Boot Camp etc., or won't that include drivers for the Mac Pro? The Mac Pro is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

I have both the silver discs specific to my iMac and Mac Pro models that you receive with your Mac, and a general copy of Snow Leopard that you buy from the store.
I used the silver disc that is specific for my iMac to install the drivers, and Boot Camp 3.0 on my iMac. But with the Mac Pro, the software is older and only has Boot Camp 2.0, thus I'm wondering if I can simply use the software on the general copy of Snow Leopard I own, or does the silver disc contain specific drivers for my Mac Pro that I need?
I'm under perhaps the wrong impression that the silver discs that you get with your Mac purchase contain drivers for your specific Mac model which you can't get from the general Snow Leopard disc.
