Hardware Test Won't Work!

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro i5 with 8gb running Mountain Lion and the Hardware Test won't work. Everytime I hold down the "d" key it just boots normally. Since I have an early 2011 Mac I used to have Snow Leopard installed but then I upgraded to Mountain Lion. What should I do?

... the Internet Recovery window wouldn't accept my network name and password.
No idea, but review the chart here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If your usual or current Internet connection has requirements or settings not supported by OS X Restore, either change the settings to a supported configuration for the duration of your OS X reinstall, or seek out acceptable networks from which you are permitted to access the Internet ...
Try changing your network settings to conform to whatever OS X Recovery needs.
Also why would my Mac be the the computer built without AHT if I bought it in early 2011?

  • HELP!  Hardware test won't run

A couple of weeks ago I had a problem with what I believe was a kernel panic. I ran the AHT and all checked out, so I ran repair permissions and everything was fine until now.
While I was working in InDesign (which I do 8-10 hours daily) I got the grey screen with the multi-language message to restart my computer, and it starts up but immediately goes to that screen again. It wouldn't boot in safe mode or from the install disk, and when I first tried to run the AHT I got to the three icons clicked on the straight arrow and got a black rectangle in the middle of the screen. I shut it down, unplugged it and left for a couple of hours. When I came back and tried again I clicked on the circular arrow and it restarted the OS (which promptly crashed). So I tried again and clicked on the straight arrow and it did the exact same thing (restarted the OS and crashed).
Any ideas on why the hardware test isn't working? This is so very frustrating for a long-time Mac user who is now regretting the purchase of an iMac.

    IMac G5 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Carole,
A couple of initial questions / suggestions. Firstly I gather from your other threads that this is one of the iMac G5 iSight models?
    1) Do you have anything other than the keyboard and mouse connected to the computer? THis can prevent boot up from CD's and DVD's on occasion. If so, simply disconnect everything and try booting from your OS / AHT DVD again.
    2) Try an SMU reset (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733 )
    3) try starting up in safe mode from your HD (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392 )
    4) You say you have been a Mac user for quite some time. Do you have access to another FW equipped Mac? If so you may want to try connecting the iMac to it with a firewire cable, starting the iMac up in target disk mode (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583 ), and seeing if the iMac HD is accessible from the other Mac. You could also run a CURRENT version of Disk Utility over the iMac drive from the other computer.

  • Apple Hardware Test won't load

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.9.4 on a late 2011 MB Pro and am unable to boot up to the Apple Hardware Test partition. Also won't boot to system install USB flash drive. Any help wold be much appreciated.

It's option key to boot AHT cd. You can run it, but firmware and OS updates makes the disk veriosn obsolete. So don't panick over a false positive.
I would backup files and c boot from the installer disk, select Disk Utility and Repair Disk/Permissions see if that works. Also disable hard drive sleep in System Preferences>Energy
If not repeat above and Erase w/Zero option and reinstall the OS. If your going to bother with all that, might as well make the jump to Tiger and iLife '06 (not included with Tiger)

  • Passed hardware test, won't boot

I am trying to get my 2008 iMac running again.  I replaced the hard drive after it quit working.  I have the boot cd in and when I ran the hardware test there were
No issues.  All that I get is the missing file (flashing question mark) screen.  I can't get it in verbose, or boot it from the cd.  I've been using mac since the early 80's and have never had to have one professionally fixed.  Any ideas?

I know... I can't figure out why it won't.  I've even tried multiple keyboards to be sure... It stays on the gray screen longer than usual, and goes to the missing file icon.

  • Hardware test won't proceed - should I upgrade/change hard drive?

Searched the discussion and my problem is a combination of various links...
My powerbook had no problems for close to 5 years. Things started running slowly and of course, things were getting full. Will get an external hard drive in 2 days so burned everything on CDs.
    Ran the Hardware Test but it asked me to type "mac-boot" to continue booting;
    Screen showed: Invalid memory access at %SRRO:ad3c0108 %SRRI: 3c01086f;
Then some other lingo appeared and didn't offer me an extended test as indicated on the discussion boards. After awhile, I forced shut down.
Took to local apple store and sales sold me 2 512 Ram. I was suspicious and asked another sales b/c I'd thought I could only have 1 chip installed and max was 640 total.
When my order arrived 1 day later, I was told that only 1 slot was available so finally installed 1G. At the counter, when I started up the computer, this flashing globe in a box and then the file with question mark appeared. I was told it was a software problem and they did something to tell the disk where to go at start up.
When I went to pick it up, technician said there was a hardware problem and my disk is failing fast. He wanted to do a diagnostic test and potentially replace the disk.
I took it home to back up the rest of the stuff, did some research, did the MacJanitor. Is it just me or after MacJ, the computer seemed quieter, almost calmer?!
Start up still takes 3 minutes and some slight ping/ clanging sound but still working.
Tempted to do the Hardware Test again since I ran the Disk Utility and things were verified and repaired. Is the Hardware Test the same as the Repair Disk? I can't find any "repair disk" and I keep everything out of the box.
Should I just replace/upgrade my drive instead of spending money doing a diagnostic test?
If it's replaced, (and with the extra ram), can I prolong my computer's life by 5 more years?
    Thanks,
I'm a novice who needs advice in lay person language.

    Joyce:
Your math is correct. You can buy and probably install an internal HDD for the price of one of those utilities. However, I have both Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro and they are tools I use regularly for OS X maintenance, so they pay for themselves over and over. In any case, I think you have a point and a plan.
I suggest that you use SuperDuper to clone everything over. It is a lot faster and more efficient. You can then test and repair it on the external.
I think you will love what a new 120 GB HDD does for your computer. The newer drives are faster (5400 rpms as opposed to 4200 rpms) than the original drives, and you will notice the difference in performance. In addition your storage capacity triples and the free space helps the performance of your HDD, and lessens the risk of directory corruption. If you are at all handy and would like to attempt the installation yourself, you will find step-by-step directions at ifixit. If you think you would like to attempt it, please post back for some tips.
Once you have the new HDD installed you will need to format it before installation. You can reformat and erase the old HDD, and after you have swapped it out you can install it in a Firewire enclosure and use it as an external firewire HDD. Here are step by step directions for formatting:
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Optional: (Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • Apple hardware test won't run

I'm positive my exhaust fan is on it's last leg.  I want to run a hardware test to confirm, but nothing works.  I've shut down and held D on starting, I've held Option + D, I've held Command + D, I've restarted, shut down and started up with all these.  Nothing works.  I have a wired USB keyboard, and I've tried with it directly plugged into the mac.  I'm at my wit's end here!

    Hi Amanda Marvin!
Try running the Apple Hardware Test by using the steps listed in this article about AHT:
    Using Apple Hardware Test
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
If necessary, you may need to also try resetting your SMC if you are having difficulty loading the hardware test:

  • Apple Hardware test won't start

    Hi,
I have tried pressing 'D' on startup, as well as command+D and command +R on startup and nothing works.
This is a macbook late 2008 model running mountain lion.
Appreciate your time in helping me solve this.

When you get your computer, Apple Hardware Test is stored on the hard disk, but it's deleted when you erase the hard disk or upgrade OS X, so it's no longer in the hard disk.
The DVDs which came with your computer have Apple Hardware Test, so insert the Mac OS X DVD and hold the D key while your computer is starting to start in Apple Hardware Test. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

  • Hardware test won't initialize!

I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro and am having some suspect issues with it, so I wanted to try running a hardware test. I put in Disk 1 that came with my computer, restarted the computer, and pressed "D" to initialize the test, and all it did was spit out my disk. I though it was supposed to go through the hardware test. The only thing that did come up after the welcome screen was to update my firmware, but I'm pretty sure a hardware test was not conducted because as soon as the grey screen came up, the disc was immediately ejected. Am i not doing something right? Thanks!

LOL. Well, I never thought you were, but it's an easy mistake to make. I know - I've made it.
If the disc mounts and is accessible, then it's possible there's some other problem either with the disc itself or the optical drive. What you might try is making a duplicate of the DVD, then using the duplicate. See the following procedure for duping a DVD:
    Duplicate a CD or DVD
    1. Insert the DVD/CD;
    2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
    3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
    4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
    5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
    6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.
Another thing you might try is to forget the DVD and just restart the computer and hold down the "D" key. Apparently some Intel Macs will invoke the hardware test without the DVD being used. I have no idea if this will work for you, but give it a try.

  • Hardware test won't launch

    Hi all!
here’s my problem, telegram style for reading pleasure ;-)
    iMac 8,1 (early 2008)
at startup, Ethernet suddenly isn’t recognised (“no cable connected”)
tried different Ethernet cables, and two different locations (took my imac home from work)
    tried zapping PRAM
tried resetting SMC as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
tried hardware test startup with cmnd-opt-D, didn’t work
then, as advised in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2525557?start=0&tstart=0 , tried resetting Firmware Protection Password, as described in http://www.securemac.com/openfirmwarepasswordprotection.php
I have a USB keyboard attached, but all this don’t work.
    What can I try next?
any help will be welcomed with cheers and applause
    thank you,
    Daniel

If you have a firmware password set, you have to disable it. I don't know what you meant by "tried resetting Firmware Protection." Does resetting mean disable? Also, the D key will only work by simply restarting if your Mac came with the AHT pre-installed. It may not have. Otherwise, you will need to run it (using the D Key alone) from one of the discs that came with the computer.
    To disable firmware password.
    1. Launch the Open Firmware Password application (This is on the Install DVD; you will need to know the current pword to boot from the DVD.)
    2. Click the icon ( authentication ) and provide your admin login details (includes the admin password)
    3. Click on the change button
    4. An Open Firmware Password window will appear on your screen.
    5. Un-check (deselect) the “Require password to change Open Firmware settings” option from that window
    6. Click “OK” to submit your changes
    7. Select the lock icon again and you are all set

  • Hardware test don't work

My mac book pro 2008 är uppdaterad till 10.8.5. Det funkar inte att göra ett Hardware test på den med att hålla nere D vid omstart. Hoppas någon vet hur jag ska göra?

  • Apple Hardware Test won't start from original Apple DVD

I'll make this one short and to the point, and here're what I did to try to start the Apple Hardware Test - and failed:
    1) Disconnected all connected network and hardware except the bare essentials (Apple USB keyboard and mouse).
    2) Insert DVD#1 of the original iMac media (then OS X v10.5.2)
    3) Shut off iMac. Start, holding 'D' key (with the iMac DVD#1 in the drive)
    4) Keep holding 'D' key, AHT didn't start, instead the DVD disc ejects, and the grey screen shows folder with question mark, nothing happens thereafter.
    5) Repeated 10x, no difference.
    Somebody knows what's wrong?

Holding down C key does start the Mac OS X installer; in which I was able to "partially" diagnose that my HDD is toast by using the Disk Utility. It formats (erases), but as soon as I finished erasing, I tried to verify the disk, and it says it already has problems and cannot be repaired.
I am thinking if during the loading of AHT (from DVD), it tries to cache some files onto the internal hard drive. Since my drive is no good - thus the reason for my using AHT, which is to find out if I get a 4HDD/11 type error - the AHT simply cannot load under my circumstances.

  • HT201257 Apple Hardware Test won't stop

My daughter went to turn on her MacBook and the Apple Hardware Test came up.  I Googled what the AHT was & so we let it run in order to shut it down.    When we started it up again, the AHT popped up again.  We cannot get it to stop! (There is no disk inserted & she does not even remember hitting any keys that may have started this in the first place.)  Thanks for any help you can lend.

    Any suggestions?

I'm trying to create a unit test on my application but I get an error when I call:

I've tried on multiple projects with the same result. I also downloaded the source from this tutorial: http://netbeans.org/kb/docs/javaee/javaee-entapp-junit.html and it failed. I've gone through the logs and output and nothing jumps out. The application itself will compile, deploy and work.

BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 12 seconds)

I am obviously talking to Apple AND I posted this letter here, because a lot users seem confused about why their computers won't sleep. Even most AppleCare reps are confused. In the past, I couldn't find much in the way of explanations pointing to this issue, so I thought I post it here in case other people are looking for an explanation.
The auto-sleep function was built before websites auto-updated and needs to be updated to accomodate them. For the average user, it doesn't make sense for the computer not to sleep just because Gmail is open. Just because some website auto-refreshes in my browser, doesn't mean I never want my computer to sleep. By the same token, if I wanted to turn off auto-sleep I could easily do so from within Energy Saver Preferences. The two should be independent, so the user has the choice.
Why should I have to close my browser every time I walk away from my computer in order for it to sleep? I've acknowledged that in certain circumstance it makes sense for the computer not to auto-sleep: watching a movie, uploading, etc, but Apple has already accounted for those instances because the computer does not auto-sleep when those programs are running. All I'm suggesting is making the auto-sleep mechanism more sophisticated so that it isn't overridden by websites auto-refreshing.
Why the negative attitude, dwb? Based on the amount of time you spend in these discussion forums, you obviously never turn your computer off, so this doesn't really affect you. Maybe it's time to step outside and get some fresh air?
