Hardware will not upgrade to Lion - Will I lose MacMail?

I have an Intel Core Duo MacBook (circa 2006) using OS 10.4.11 Tiger. I cannot, apparently, upgrade to Lion because of my 'old' hardware. Frankly, I don't care about the Cloud, but I depend on MacMail. Are there any viable alternatives for those of us who use and love our older machines or are we out of luck? If upgrades are available, how steep is the price?

From the Basics4Mac link Barney-15E provided -
"Go to me.com/move and log in to your MobileMe account. Your account will be migrated to iCloud. Once migrated, you can sign into iCloud on your Lion Macs and iDevices running iOS 5*
I have no access to anything running Lion or iOS 5. And, when I clicked on the link, it just opened my me.com online email window. So that didn't work, either (and my mac.com email is happily pinging at every update on this forum so it's still working).
The nearest Apple Store is more than one hundred miles away - I live in rural Iowa, and it's 2+ hours to Des Moines.
I will add an IMAP email to my email roster and see if it brings anything in.
Sorry to be a pain, but this is incredibly aggravating. At least, if all this fails, I have 6 months to get my contacts to use a gmail address to email me instead.

Hi Mary, the other so called "Features" of iClound will not work for like Syncing, but eMail will.
MobileMe & dot Mac will still work last I heard.
iCloud Mail setup, even in 10.4/10.5…
Don't delete your old account yet. Just setup a new one in Mail>Preferences>Accounts, little plus icon. Choose IMAP as account type, not ,mac or MobileMe.

  • How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8)

How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8) since November until now.  Mail will no longer download on the MacBook Pro and keeps asking for my password.

Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.

  • I have not upgraded to Lion, but am getting upgrade notices from my apps.  What should I upgrade or not?

I keep getting upgrade notices for Lion compatabilty but I do not have Lion installed yet.  How should I handle those upgrades?

Be very careful with upgrading to Lion. Upgraded my MBP 15" early 2011, the day Lion came out, but have been plagued by reduced battery life (i can now get only 2-3 hours after the upgrade). Rosetta support is gone. I would wait until Apple is back in the true apple mode and not like Microsoft. Lion (current version) is not worth the upgrade.
I went to the Apple store to have them check my battery, but they could not find anything wrong and incidentally both the "Genius" support technicians i spoke to had not upgraded to Lion. There needs to be a reason behind it. I bought my MacBook Air 11" (new) a couple of weeks ago. Apple claims 7 hour battery life on them. I charged my MB Air with 100% charge when i booted the machine it showed that it had 5:08 hours left on the battery. Over the time it took me to type this message, the time left has gone down to 3:58 hours left. This on a machine that apple ships with Lion tells me that there is a HUGE battery/power management issue with Lion.
I moved to Mac simply because I needed and could get long battery life. That has been defeated by Lion.

  • Using a Macbook 2008 with Lion 10.7.5, how can I project photos/keynote on smart tv screen? Macbook will not upgrade beyond Lion.

Using a Macbook 2008 with Lion, 10.7.5, how can I project photos/keynote presentation on my smart tv? It is connected to tv with mini-dvi/hdmi cable, but I don't know how to display the images. Thanks!

Did you switch the TV's input to the HDMI port you are using with the computer? Did you open Displays preferences to see if a second screen is displayed and then check the box to mirror to the TV screen? Did you search Google for any help links on how to do what you are trying to do?

  • Macbook pro will not upgrade to lion

I am trying to uprade my MacBook Pro to Lion.  I have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and am running it on 3 other computers in our home.  I am struggling to get this computer to load lion.  When I go to the App store, and click on install I get the grey circle that just keeps going like it is trying to load, but no progress is ever made.
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.

No, I only have 1GB.  I missed that on the specs - that would have been helpful.  I might have to add some memory...
    Thanks!

  • Could not upgrade to Lion OS X

I decided to install a new Leo OS.
I have 2 partitions on my iMac: Mac partition for ~800 GB and Windows partition for ~120 GB.
Today I downloaded a new version of  Leo from Mac App store.
After restart for installation I got a problem with a lack of free space for the installation to proceed. Leo’s installator says that there is only 200 MB of free space.
But when I check the free capacity of Mac partition from Windows, it shows around 200 GB free.
Where information about free space is correct? Could it be a bug in installation software?
What should I do about this situation? How to undo the installation of Leo?

  • If i upgrade to lion do i lose files and bootcamp?

I want to know before i download it

no, but be advised that only Win 7 runs in Boot Camp with Lion.  So if you have an older version of Windows, don't upgrade until you get a hold of Win 7 or consider switching from Boot Camp to a virtual machine.  Also, any PPC based applications wont work in Lion as the do with 10.6 and prior versions of OS X.

  • What will happen to my .me email address if I do not move to lion?

I run a program for my business that must be upgraded to run on lion.  ($1000).  My old mac server will not upgrade to lion so I will need a new computer.  I can use a mini.  All a bit expensive right now. So, if I have to wait to upgrade everything and mobile me is gone, can I still use my .me email?

iCloud is free for iOS 5 and OS X Lion users, so if you have access to an IOS 5 device, you can do the transition there. You dont have to have LION running, once your account is converted over by before June 30, 2012., you are good.
www.me.com/move you can follow the guide to convert your account and keep whatever OS you want.

  • Upgrading to Lion recommendations

    Hi,
I just bought a used mid 2010 mac mini; a 2.4 GHz w/ 8 GB RAM and 320 GB HD.  It currently has 10.6.8 on it.  I want to upgrade to Lion but apprehensive some applications might not work in the new environment.
I want to be cautious and like to be able to revert back to Snow Leopard if Lion doesn't work out.
My solution: Use Carbon Copy Clone and an external firewire drive. --- Does this sound right?  Will I be able to boot from the newly cloned external firewire drive?  The only other type of drive is the USB...
    Any advice, thanks.

If you plan on watching any iTunes movies or TV shows,
DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION!!!!  You end up with unpredictable
and sometimes unwatchable video due to studdering.
(Perhaps by 10.7.5 or 10.7.6 they may finally address the
    2010 Mini issues).
If however, your video content is not iTunes based, then
by all means update.  The approach I use is as follows:
    1.  First prepare the Firewire drive for cloning by partitioning
as GUID and format as Mac OSX extended, journalled.
    2.  Perform repair disk and repair permissions on the Mini's
          internal drive.
    3.  Next connect the Firewire drive and clone the internal disk.
You can use Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.  There
is also the option of using the restore function of Disk Utility.
The advantage of the other two apps is that in the future you
can do incremental clones which will take much less time.
    4.  Unmount and remove the Firewire drive.  Also, disconnect
everything else other than monitor, keyboard, and mouse.
    5.  Do the Lion install.
Stick with Firewire 800 drives as clones as they will boot much
faster than USB.  Also, stay away from WD drives, as they are
not reliable boot sources.  My preferences are the Iomega and
G-Drive portables.  They seem to be the fastest Firewire drives
that work best with Macs (the G-Drive so far is the fastest of all).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, selectHelp from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Mar 11, 2012 4:13 PM (in response to Linc Davis)
Did all of that yesterday, with the Apple Representative on the phone, and nope, still a problem...it was kind of exciting, really, they kept going up and up the tiers of support until I got disconnected...Fortunately I had the email address of the gentleman who was helping me so that I could email him back and let him know that we got disconnected...as you might imagine, he still has not emailed me back.  They were able to receive a copy of the form that I use for charting and try it in their facility on their computers, so we know:
1- it is not just my computer.
2- it occurred only after installing Lion OS X, not sure if they have tried it on Snow Leopard, but that's what I would have done if I was them...assuming that somewhere in Apple someone has not upgraded to Lion.
3- it is not just my software.
I think the problem is with the newer iteration of Preview  not communicating well with the Adobe .pdf.  probably some line of coding that needs to be written and insertedinto their program for multiline text.
:-)  Thank you for your help!

  • I upgraded  to lion

I upgraded to lion now my iMac will not show dual monitors it will not show the other monitor in the system
I used 2 monitors before I upgraded its a new Mac I only had for 9 days

The options, as discussed in other conversations inn this forum, are:
Return the new computer. Carry on with your old one, or search out a new one with OS X v10.6.x installed. Install AppleWorks on that machine and carry on.
Keep the new computer. Keep an older one to run AppleWorks (and any other applications requiring Rosetta).
Install an emulator environment. Run AppleWorks via the emulator, ans described in this thread: AppleWorks well and alive in Lion (Updated)
Get Numbers '09, which can open AppleWorks 6 spreadsheets. Editing of formulas may be necessary with some files.
Rebuild your spreadsheets in another application.
Retroactive option (ie. Should'a done this before diving into the Lion den):
Pay attention. Apple declared AppleWorks EOL in 2004. You've had seven years to prepare for the inevitable arrival of an operating system that would no longer support AppleWorks. there was plenty of notice (although none directly from Apple) that Lion was the one. Many people who felt AppleWorks was an irreplaceable necessity chose to not upgrade to Lion; some chose to quickly buy a new machine with Snow Leopard installed.
    Regards,
    Barry

I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and it says that it will not support Power PC programs and has blanked out my 2008 version of MS Office for Mac and Intuit's Quickbooks.  How do I proceed to get these programs back?

Upgrade to newer versions compatible with Lion or downgrade to Snow Leopard:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • My software update shows that no update is available for my machine.  It shows that it is running Snow Leopard 10.5.8, downloads for the 10.6.8 update will not open.  I am trying to get the mac store app so I can upgrade to Lion.

I have not been successful in obtaining the latest version of Snow Leopard so I have the Mac Store app.  My computer shows that there are no updates available even though it only shows it running version 10..5.8.  I would like to upgrade to Lion.  When I download the .dmg updates from the web, they try unsuccessfully to open in Itunes or Quicktime.  I can not get them to run.  What is my next step?

As noted, in order to update from OS X 10.5.x to OS X 10.6.x you will need to acquire the retail package for OS X 10.6; that initial jump can not be done via download.
The current shipping retail version for OS X 10.6 is 10.6.3. Once you have installed that you can update it to OS X 10.6.8 via the Combo Update - running Software UPdate should be able to fetch that for you. You can also download it directly -
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Once you have installed that you can download and install the update for OS X 10.7 (Lion).

  • ITunes devices will not detect digital copy after upgrading to Lion

Hi, I recently bought a Blu-Ray that came with a digital copy.  I know there are two types, as I get a lot of them.  This is one of the ones where the file is copied from the disc itself.  (Not one where you just enter a code and download the file.)
I put the disc in the computer and iTunes will not recognize it.  I have done many of these before and never had this issue.  It cannot be the disc funtionality as the DVD player will play it and the Finder recognizes it.  (It is the right disc too!  I didn't accidentally insert the wrong one.)  I am wondering if it has anything to do with upgrading to Lion and iTunes 10.5.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem, or does anyone know how I can fix this?

    Dsimagry,
Thanks for your reply. I did check the software updates for the system and iPhoto, which told me I was up-todate.
I do not see the camera come up as a drive on the desktop or in finder. In fact I don't believe that I ever did. I always used to open iPhoto and turn the camera on. Then iPhoto would ask me if I wanted to import the photos. This seems to have stopped since I installed the upgrade for Lion. I know the camera works, as I took it to my wife's Mac Mini that has Tiger and it connected and imported the photos fine. I have tried what another person stated in a post where someone else had a problem with an Olympus camera and that was to redo the disk permissions. It helped that person, but did not help me. They also stated looking for the device in Image Capture and iMovie, but my camera is not showing up there. I am suspecting that there is some going on with the OS Lion that is preventing my camera and Compact Flash memory card from being recognized. If I cannot get this fixed I may have to revert back to Snow Leopard.
