Has 10.7.2 Server fixed Network Gateway issue?

I upgraded our server when Lion was first released to discover that the it completely broke the network gateway - I have since reverted back to 10.6.
Has 10.7.2 fixed this issue? Is it save for me to upgrade yet?

Don't upgrade. It is not safe. Stick with SLS.

    Hi SHzKhan,
According to your error message, we need to verify if you configure the MSDTC correctly, When you have more than one SQL Server involved in a Distributed Transaction, you need to make some changes to the default configuration of MSDTC for these distributed

  • 1 server, 2 networks how to route traffic to both

    Hi i have NW65SP7
what i'm trying to do is
    1. to have users come in thru the data network (192.168.0.0) and the traffic
go back out thru the default gateway (192.168.0.1) and
    2. i want LDAP traffic to go in thru the other network (10.1.0.0) and
backout thru the same networks gateway (10.1.0.1).
    1. works fine and all seems to go up and down the right network, however 2.
comes down 10.1.0.0 and backout thru the default gateway on 192.168.0.1. I
don't\can't have this as the firewall rejects the packet as the source and
destination networks are different ie. the fw sees the packet come in thru
10.1.0.0 but when the server sends it back out thru 192.168.0.0 the firewall
    rightly drops it
How do i get 2. to work as i want, can this even be done on NW.
What i've done so far is
    a. enabled Static Routing
    b. created a default route (192.168.0.1) with a metric of 2
    c. created a network route for 10.1.0.0 (10.1.0.1) with a metric of 1

No the netware server is not the router
The server has 1 interface but two vlans trunked to the one interface, each
vlan has a separate IP. I can ping each IP on each of the trunked vlans
fine. I'm using Broadcom Q57 NICS and the QASP\BASP advanced driver to
support the trunked vlans. Don't let that confuse the issue though..it's
basically the same as having two nic interfaces connected to two seperate
networks in this case lets say 192.168.0.10 and 10.0.0.10
Just so we're on the same page, we have a very large routed network with
over 250 subnetworks with 4 10G interconnected core routers each with a 10G
distribution routers, buildings\user\server networks hang of the
distribution routers . Client machines are distributed accross the network
and are not on the same vlan\subnet as the servers.
A server on 192.168.0.0 will have a default gateway of 192.168.0.1 and
servers on 10.0.0.0 will have a default gateway of 10.0.0.1 there are no
clients machines on these subnets....btw we don't really have a 192.168.0.0
network..i'm just using this as an example.
The NW server has 1 static route configured as the default gateway on
192.168.0.1...and i've been trying to work out how to configure another
static route to make sure that all incoming and outgoing traffic for
10.0.0.0 stays on 10.0.0.0 or whatever else i need to do to get it working

Clients are fine, lets say that they are on 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.255.0 and
they have default gateways on their subnets the go thru x.x.x.1 (eg.a
192.168.1.0 machine will have a default gateway of 192.168.1.1 and a
192.168.2.0 machine will have a default gateway of 192.168.2.1 etc)

Yes i understand that routing is not application\protocol specific

See above re. the network...the firewall\s are blades within the core
routers and support virtual firewalls that can be applied to any part of the
    distribution\access layer of the network.
Does that make any more sense???

  • Lion Server Gateway Issues

    Hello,
I have a perplexing issue with both my own server and a client's server.  In both cases I am trying to configure a Lion server as a gateway (Firewall, DNS, DHCP, NAT) and I am unable to get the services working consistently.  If I am able to get my server(s) functioning as gateways I lose DHCP any time the service restarts.
I have been able to reproduce this issue on two separate networks in two different locations on two separate static IPs with both a Mac Pro and a Mac Mini.
    1. I setup reverse DNS with both ISPs.
    2. I began with a fresh 10.7.0 server installation from the recovery partition, the I configured my static IP address and FQDN during the Setup Assistant, rDNS checked out fine, and after the assistant was done I immediately ran updates.
    3. After restarting I configured my DNS.  I setup a machine address for the server and linked my FCDN to my static IP address.
    4. I downloaded Server Admin Tools 10.7.2 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1457 and installed them.  I ran Software Update again to make sure the system was completely up to date.
    5. Using Server Admin I enabled NAT and ran the Gateway Setup Assistant.
    6. After running Gateway Setup Assistant the LAN was unable to obtain IP addresses via DHCP.  Devices connected to the LAN had self-assigned IP addresses.
    7. I opened the Firewall for both "any" and "192.168.1.1-net" by allowing both IP address groups to allow all traffic.
Still no luck.  A little Googling and I found http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3887 - "Unable to connect to the Internet after running NAT Gateway Setup Assistant".
    8. I follwed the instructions in TS3887 and my LAN was still unable to obtain an IP address via DHCP.
After 3 days of trial and error I have found that my DHCP settings are being reset whenever I start/stop/start DHCP services.  Whenever I restart the DHCP service I get one of the following error message sequences in /var/system.log:
Jan 25 16:19:43 server servermgrd[71]: servermgr_dhcp:bootp config:Error:Unable to read configuration file - error 2 (No such file or directory)
    Jan 25 16:19:43 server servermgrd[71]: servermgr_dhcp:bootp config:Notice:Created default configuration file
    Jan 25 16:19:43 server servermgrd[71]: servermgr_dhcp:bootp config:Notice:Created 2 default subnet records
    or
Jan 25 16:15:50 server serveradmin[4843]: servermgr_dhcp:bootp config:Error:Unable to read configuration file - error 2 (No such file or directory)
    Jan 25 16:15:50 server serveradmin[4843]: servermgr_dhcp:bootp config:Notice:Created default configuration file
    Jan 25 16:15:50 server serveradmin[4843]: servermgr_dhcp:bootp config:Notice:Created 1 default subnet records
As it turns out, something is overwriting /etc/bootpd.plist:
    sh-3.2# ls -al /etc/bootpd.plist
    -rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  1536 Jan 25 16:20 /etc/bootpd.plist
    sh-3.2# serveradmin stop dhcp
    dhcp:state = "STOPPED"
    sh-3.2# ls -al /etc/bootpd.plist
    -rw-r--r--  1 root  wheel  1132 Jan 25 16:47 /etc/bootpd.plist
I have no idea why Server Manager believes that /etc/bootpd.plist does not exist but I began to notice some strang behavior while working on the problem.
    - While DHCP was turned off in Server Admin devices on my LAN were often able to obtain IP addresses through BootP.
    1. I could use Server Admin to start DHCP but it would fail and create two new subnets, one for my WAN and one for my LAN.  Although no subnets were enabled decices on my LAN would obtain IP addresses through BootP.  I could then start DHCP with none of the subnets enabled.
    2. If I enabled the LAN subnet and restarted DHCP Server Admin would fail to start DHCP.  I could try again and DHCP would start with no subnets enabled.
    3. If I stopped DHCP the system would again reset my /etc/bootpd.plist and I woudl be left with one subnet for my LAN.  This subnet was enabled by default.
    4. If I stopped DHCP the system woudl once again reset my /etc/bootpd.plist and I would have one subnet for my WAN.  This subnet was disabled by default.
And then this loop would continue in slightly different variations indefinately.  Here is what my log looks like while this is happening:
Jan 25 17:09:04 server servermgrd[71]: servermgr_dhcp:bootp config:Error:Unable to read configuration file - error 2 (No such file or directory)

The only times it seems that DHCP is working is when it is off... which does not make any sense.
    Here are some screenshots:

I don't know if it's directly related, but your setup is wrong. That could be why the config is resetting.
On your 'internal' interface you're manually setting the IP address to 192.168.2.1/255.255.255.0, and that's fine, but this interface should have NO router address specified. In your case you've set the router address to the server itself, which is never going to be accurate.
Secondly, the DHCP settings don't have a router address set. This means that your DHCP server will hand out addresses to clients, but won't tell them how to get to the outside world. Hardly seems appropriate to me.
In your DHCP settings you should set the router address to the address of your NAT server (in this case 192.168.2.1).
Try those fixes and see if it makes any difference.

I never said that there was, perhaps you imagined it.

  • Practical usage / difference - local vs server (local / network) accounts

I have purchased a book on Mountain Lion Server, looked on the Apple support community and the Internet but I cannot find a clear answer, or explanation, to my query.
Instead of looking at the features in Mountain Lion (ML) Server and Open Directory (OD) I'd like to approach this in terms of the functionality I would like to achieve. I am sure that many other people have had, will have, the same sort of questions.
Some background: I have an all Apple home network — few Mac machines (iMac, MacBook), iPad, iPhone & Airport Extreme. I recently purchased a Mac mini running ML which I have setup as a server. The installation went OK and the DNS setup is fine.
This is my question / requirement / clarification needed.
As I understand it there are three types of user accounts in OS X + OS X Server with OD:
Computer (standalone) Local — basically the account you would have on a Mac if you had only the one machine. Using (as I believe) a local 'Open Directory' (?) database.
Server 'Local User' — an account on the server using a local OD database on that specific server.
Server 'Local Network User' — an account on the server using a networked OD database on the server.
Below is what do I want to do — this is the functionality I want / don't want. I am aware that some of this functionality may, or may not, be available on OS X + Server + OD. Also I am looking at this from the perspective of a systems administrator of Windows + Active Directory sites — not saying that Windows & AD is better, but that that is my experience & frame of reference.
Access to shared common services — DHCP, DNS, Files, Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Messages, Time Machine backup, VPN. That is all the goodies I expected to get with a dedicated Mac mini OS X server machine.
To have access to those services within the home LAN and, as relevant (Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Messages) via the Internet. If via the Internet then securely via use of certificates.
Each user (currently) has their own machine with their (Unix style) home folder & files on that machine (the MacBook may have more than one account on it) and is logging locally onto their specific machines.
I do NOT want to have the user's (Unix style) home folder (and all folders within) to be on the server.
Users must be able to log onto their machines (i.e. MacBook) when outside the LAN and be able to access their local machine files.
Now we come to the question of which type of OS X + OS X Server (OD) account do I use for people — keep the local machine account? Use server account? If so then which — server 'Local User' or 'Local Network User'. Of course this can be framed as which OD a user authenticates against and what are the ramifications of each method.
Also relevant is the point that I don't believe OS X Server + OD supports the same concept of Windows called 'cached credentials'. Which means that I couldn't have, for example, files on a computer (MacBook) which have an ACL referencing a server user account GUID because they could not be accessed if the user account was not able to authenticate (outside the LAN) with the OD server.
Anyway to the questions — to achieve all, most of, the five functionality points in the list should I use (and why if someone could explain rationale):
Combination of computer (standalone) Local + server 'Local User' accounts? Obviously as users will be accessing resources on the server it cannot be just Computer (standalone) Local accounts.
Combination of computer Local + server 'Local Network User' accounts?
Just server 'Local Network User' accounts
I am suspecting that it will be option 1, combination of computer (standalone) Local + server 'Local User' accounts. If this option is used would there be a problem if the two accounts have the same username?
Thanks for any help, advice, and/or instruction. Also if anyone has links to further information that would be much appreciated.

Most services (calendar, contacts, vpn) require that your users authenticate via Open Directory.
Your admin account can be local, but put your users in Local-Network (in 10.8 terms)
