  • Has Anyone Been Charged for the RSD Repair?

In all the talk about the MacBook's RSD (Random ShutDown) problems, I haven't read anything about a repair fee. It always struck me as a faulty unit that Apple was fixing to make it as it should be. (That is, the "problem" isn't a result of anything the user did.)
When I dropped off my MacBook at my local Apple Store, it was quickly checked by someone at the Genius Bar. He confirmed that it was shutting down (mine does it pretty consistently) and set up a repair to replace the Heatsink Kit. I signed the work order and left the store.
Once I got home and read the work order more carefully, I see that there are prices listed for the parts and labor (the total adds up to $149.06). But next to that it says "Amount Due," and it says $0.00.
I just want to verify that I won't need $150 with me when I pick up my MacBook. Has anyone had to pay for their RSD repairs?

My heat sink was also replaced but the next day the computer refused to boot...only a frozen screen with a million stripes of colored lines. I took it back to authorized reseller and they reset PRAM and upgraded to 10.4.8 operating system and charged me nearly $200 usd! I've been arguing with Apple Norway (I live in Oslo) and the authorized reseller. They blame each other and no one refuses to reimburse me. Reseller says, "Apple Care does not cover software issues. It was a software problem. Go talk to Apple."
I posted on this forum too:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=695953&tstart=0
So be careful of a frozen screen or any other software problems!

  • Has anyone been phished by the Fake Add On (extension) Sure Shot Pro?

Tonight Firefox opened to the Update page for my extension, Sure Shot (screen saver) which is now available in Sure Shot Pro, a upgraded version of the same FIrefox extension with applicability on other browsers. I was offered a 30 day trail and a free security scan for Microsoft products before I downloaded anything.
(Boy, in these days it's great to find a company like SureShot that reminds me to do a scan before downloading ANYTHING--especially after an update to my broswer! Thanks Sure Shot.)
And I swear that's how it happened...about an hour ago. Sure Shot Pro even provided me with 2 screen shots while I was reading!
The only problem is...well actually there are a few. The first is, I don't have an extension on Firefox that takes screen shots,. I do on the other browsers I use because I need to have one. But there is not an adequate on in Firefox. Nonetheless, a quick glance up to the tool bar area showed the '''S''' (the icon for Sure Shot) glowing Hot Pink up on the left. I just took my time...did use IDM for the screen shot, which was of their screen shot and edited it right on line saying I did believe them to be cheats, liars and scum. I then opened the Problem Steps Recorder from Microsoft for Windows 7, a program that records in screen shots, while a User recreates the steps he or she takes to solve a problem or do something that is not working. I took photos of the Sure Shot Pro site...which is that same cheap looking font that must be a classic Estonian typeset. The edit page was a tacky ripoff of of any HTML editor you'd like to mention. The icons for the various browsers were the best indicator that these jerks probably do fool a few fools, all probably under 4 years of age who just bang on the keyboard. The artwork--or rather lack of it--depicting the Fire Fox was lame--they all were. But don't kid yourself, these guys did their homework. I opened my Add Ons page and found Sure Shot, sure as sh#t listed as one of my extensions...that Add On Page looked almost exactly like the real thing. I actually thought I was seeing my own extensions...but they screwed up on the coloring of he page itself.
On the off chance that you are not 4 and not banging on the keyboard but are actually an adult like me who has been taken in the past...THIS IS NOT REAL. Exit Firefox, go back in Safe Mode...or just go back as usual but open Firefox and go directly to TOOLS>Add Ons and check your Add Ons and Get Add Ons...this is where they spent a lot of time making everything look very very realistic. You could easily make the decision to try the software for 30 days after checking your Add Ons and "remembering" that you must have forgotten that you chose a screen saver add on at some point in the past...Because there it is on your list...the list provided by Firefox, not some website! Right? Please, if you find this extension, REMOVE it. Don't just Disable it...and don't do their scan before downloading anything ...their scan'' is '' a download and with it comes the malware it holds. Report sites that are phisihing you. It is hard to believe July 9th is so close with well over 1/4 million owners of computers have the DNS malware that could cause them to lose access to the internet next month AND THEY DON'T KNOW THEY KNOW IT!

  • HT4528 has anyone been led into the middle of the woods by apple maps???

we were moving cross country and were led off of the interstate into a wooded subdivision that had NO business having a 26' uhaul on their roads. Luckily a home owner came out to ask us what we were doing there. Told them we were lost and he led us to town and a motel. I about went off a cliff, and the uhaul about rear ended me over the edge. All because of Apple Maps on my brand NEW apple iPhone 5c that was only days old. We were in a different state, city and town with three kids four dogs and it was dark. I talked with my family about this and apparently I am not the only one who has had problems with Apple Maps. It's a common problem. BEWARE of your use of APPLE MAPS!!!

And beware of any other GPS map as well as they are not 100% accurate either; espcially in rural areas. Why people blindly follow a GPS instead of being aware of their surroundings and using common sense is beyond me.

  • How do I know if my laptop's been affected by the ukash police virus?

I recently had the ukash virus pop up claiming it was the police, i had to pay a £100 fine etc. I panicked and immediately shut my pc down by holding down power button, and when I started it up again nothing seemed to have changed, i can still access internet,
all webpages,  ive seen no more warning and i've run my usual webroot security scan and kaspersky virus removal tool and both say no threats. I reckon my laptops is probs ok, but i just wanted to make sure that the virus is genuinely gone or its just
    lingering unseen?

Assuming it was the ukash virus then from what I understand about it if you were indeed infected then you should have seen the notification come up again when you started the machine up, preventing you from using it. See
http://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-police-trojan/ for a breakdown of what it does.
On the other hand, if it was something like Cryptolocker (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/cryptolocker-ransomware-information) instead then from
my experience it doesn't re-appear immediately after booting. If you try accessing any your local files, eg word docs, spreadsheets, images etc, do they open? If not then this might be what you have, which unfortunately is even worse than ukash.

  • Has anyone been able to upload an ibooks file with audio only files (m4a) in it? I keep getting the following error message during the upload in iTunes Producer: ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets.

Has anyone been able to upload an ibooks file with audio only files (m4a) in it? I keep getting the following error message during the upload in iTunes Producer: ERROR ITMS-9000: "Files of type audio/x-m4a are not allowed outside of widgets. then it names the file as an m4p file. Everything works beautifully on the iPad through Preview, and validates through iTunes Producer up until the attempted upload. If you've been able to accomplish this, please let me know how you prepared your audio files. Many thanks.

    Hello Fellow iBook Authors!
Today I received the same error that you all have been discussing.  I tried selecting the DRM
and this did not work for me, though I'm glad it did for some.  Here's what I did as a work-around. . .
Since iBooks Author did not have a problem with Videos, I simply used one of my video programs, ScreenFlow to turn the audio into a video file m4v.  I added an image and extended the length or timing of the image to span the length of the audio file.  Then exported as an .mov.  I then opened QuickTime and opened the file and exported the file to iTunes.
You can use iMovie, Camtasia or any other progam that will allow you to export the audio as a movie file.  Does this make sense?  I hope this helps, at least in the short-term.

  • Has anyone been able to internet share when the internet source is a verizon USB modem?

    I'm on a macbook 3,1 running OSX 10.6.8
internet is coming from a verizon USB modem/dongle model UMW190.
I have gone through the steps for internet sharing - created a network, etc.
My other devices (a roku box and an ipad) are able to see the wifi network i created.  prompts for a password, and i'm able to connect with great signal strength, but no internet!
Tried every problem solving suggestion i could find on the messageboards.
No firewill.  Changed the IP address. restarted, etc etc.
nothing can seem to get my internet working on the other devices.
If i leave it to automatic, the IP address i get starts with 169. and a message reads
"AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.156.212 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
Could this be because the internet is coming from a USB dongle?  Is my computer too old?
Has anyone been able to get their internet sharing working using a verizon USB dongle?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Update: For the heck of it, i tried connecting using my ipod touch - and it works! able to connect to the network and get on the internet.
(that was after i changed the IP from automatic 169 to the IP address of the USB modem.)
The ipad still won't connect (i'm told it may be due to a WEP non-compatibility)
and i'm not sure what's up with the Roku...
but it does work on one device.

I'm having the same issue.  The password is unavailable and I can't uncheck the encrypt password checkbox.  I don't care about the existing backups... I don't understand why I can't just  delete the existing backups, uncheck the box and move on. -- Is this a bug or something?  I have the phone, I am able to unlock and use the phone, why can't I reset the backup password in iTunes.
You can do what you want, but you must erase your phone to do it. Just restore the phone using iTunes and set it up as a New phone. As it is new you can install whatever content you want to, then make an unencrypted backup of it.
The reason you can't change your mind once you have an encrypted backup is to protect your private data. If it was possible to uncheck Encrypt Backup, then back up your phone, anyone who stole or found your phone could do this and thus have access to your private data from the new backup.

  • Has anyone been having problems with camera, safari etc. crashing on iOS 5.0.1 because I have been having the problem as well as my brother I have the iPhone 4. If anyone else having same issue comment below

Then the next step would be a restore as new to rule out corruption in the backup.

Is the apple store operational anywhere yet?  Has anyone been able to pre-order the iPhone 6?

    I pre-ordered via iPad app.
    Got a reservation email.
Then finally got a Confirm Your Order email somewhat later.
However the link to confirm in that email takes me back to the pre-order pages.
Anyone having any success with the re-comfirm order email?

    Hey all,

Has anyone been able to successfully get anything submitted to the Apple store in the last few days?
If you follow this thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/3129598#3129598  , you'll see the dramas we're having. Through a bit of tinkering, we can get the file read, but it brings up an "invalid certificate" message.
Adobe, is this something you guys are testing at the moment?
    Thanks , Oliver

Matthew, thanks for your help. You hit the nail on the head.
Going through the whole certificate process again was required. That is, revoking the old certificates, generating a new CSR file, submitting it and then creating a new .p12 file.
Did this all through Windows using iBrent's tutorials. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GteMgFvA1Y&feature=related quite helpful.
It's a battle no doubt but all uploaded finally. Thanks again. Oliver

  • Lately I have been getting a rectangular screen titled Login Setting, with my Username and Password and asking me to Login.  This screen shows up on opening the computer and has never been seen before the last month or so.

Lately I have been getting a rectangular screen titled Login Setting, with my Username and Password and asking me to Login.  This screen shows up on opening the computer and has never been seen before the last month or so.  It has one box titled Login Credentials with a username and password field and a second box titled Login Status at the bottom where it says "Profile not found" in red.   I've never seen this before and ignoring it does not effect any operations.   Is this legitimate or some kind of identity fishing?

Have you done the recent Security updates?
Is this from Sleep or on bootup?

Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

  • "This message has not been downloaded from the server" - Multiple devices all using Exchange Active Sync

We are having this issue across multiple IOS devices ranging from IOS version 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2. Many (not all) emails sent to the devices are unreadable and simply state: "This message has not been downloaded from the server". Microsoft believes this to be some sort of bug with the IOS devices in the way they are handling the SSL encryption.
    Facts:
    - Devices are connected to an Exchange 2010 SP1 Rollup 6 via Active Sync (No POP3, IMAP or SMTP)
    - issue occurs on multiple IOS devices within the organization ranging from IOS 5.x up to the latest 6.1.2
    - Issue occurs on both external cellular data and internal wireless networks
    - Not all emails sent to the devices result in the error, but issue does tend to occur more frequently from certain senders/domains
    - Using the same user account on an android phone does not result in an issue (even when receiving the exactly same email that has been sent to the IOS devices)
    - Closing mail app / rebooting device does not resolve the issue
    - Doesn't appear to matter what the mesage format is (can be html, plaintext, etc)
    - Spent nearly 7 hours with Microsoft going through the Exchange server configuration and looking for possible causes. None have been found and all testing indicates things are setup correctly.
    - This is not a case of Issue 2.3 listed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2563324 (verified by Microsoft Support)
    - If we disable SSL on the IOS device and connect via plain HTTP the messages are displayed correctly!
    - If we use a different SSL certificate, the issue still occurs - so not a problem with the original cert.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what would cause this? Does the ISO devices have any sort of log that would indicate why it's reporting this error? The current error is pretty unhelpful.

GFI Have a solution for this problem. It is to do with iOS implementation of reading the message headers when SPF compliance modifications are made by GFI.

  • Has anyone been able to link all their contacts with their Facebook info?

I just got my first iPhone and am seeing an issue: not all Facebook contacts are being synced; specifically, only 27 out of 254. I’ve been reading posts about this here, and it appears a good number of people are seeing this same problem, including a friend of mine with a 5S running iOS 7.  It appears people are under the impression this is due to a change Facebook made, and that only contacts with specific info showing on their profiles will now be synced. I’ve done some testing, and it does at least appear that only Facebook contacts showing an email address on their timeline - other than their @facebook.com address – are synced to my iPhone. Thing is, Facebook contact sync works effortlessly and perfectly for all contacts both on my Windows Phone and on another friend’s old Android phone. It therefore appears this is either an Apple or an Apple combined with Facebook issue, and not a general issue with access to Facebook contact info. I’m primarily interested in fixing this so that each of my contacts show their Facebook profile photo (which also worked effortlessly and perfectly on my Windows Phone).
I’ve tried various potential solutions like adding Facebook emails to contacts, but nothing has worked so far. Has anyone been able to get this to work? If not, and this is a universal problem with iOS 7+ and Facebook, I’m surprised more people aren’t up in arms and reporting it to Apple and Facebook as something they’d like to see fixed?

I had no issues activating my iPhone 4s. I just hooked it up to my computer and it did the rest. It was pretty easy and this was my first iPhone, I had the Motorola Droid 1 before that.
Although I was experiencing problems with calls going straight to Voicemail, even though I wasn't on the internet or doing anything on the phone, so I just got off the phone with Verizon and they had me punch in numbers to reprogram the phone and that seems to have done the trick (i hope).
I don't know if the above issue happened during the initial activation or if it was just a separate fluke, but there you go. You shouldn't experience any difficulties in setting up the phones.
    Message was edited by: sox575
I should add that I got my phone in NOV and so I'm not sure if something changed in the activation process that made it faulty. I'm just reading the thread about people having issues activating the phone over the holidays.

  • Has anyone been able to get a repair/proper fix from Apple for their LCD?

The more I use my Macbook Pro while traveling the more i notice the 'sparkly/grainy' display. Compared to the White/Black Macbook it is obviously noticable what i'm talking about - especially on white backgrounds. My question is - has anyone been able to get a proper repair/fix for this common problem for the Core 2 Duo 15" Macbook Pro's?
I normally have my Macbook Pro connected to an external display but when i do take it along when I travel it stands out more and more every time.
Is Apple going to issue a 'recall/repair' for their customers who bought their Macbook Pro's? What am I to do here, When i need to use my laptop when I travel I can't take the annoyance of using this LCD screen.
    C2D 2.16 2GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, I can CLEARLY see it, it's like wearing glasses that are filthy. The laptop is one week old and I could see it from after the 802.11n upgrade. This is not all that zoomed, really. To me it looks like a video memory problem, not a LCD problem. The problem is the same if I connect an external DELL monitor. Also very visible there. Also very visible if I change resolutions or number of colours. The main reason I believe it's a video memory thing is that when I move a window, it changes from white to, well... yellow and red. Check out: http://niklas.saers.com/MBP/MG8665.jpg That is why I am unsure if this is the kind of grain you are talking about. Can you confirm that this is the kind of problem you guys are seeing?
    PS, I use a Canon 20D with a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens.
