Has anyone else had optical sound output problems since the last Apple software update?

I have just read an article about this problem and it seems that there is an issue with the last software update from Apple which has caused problems with the optical sound driver.
My optical output stopped working a couple of weeks back which would probably coincide with the last update that was installed. Still have a red light at the end of the cable but no sound is transmitted.

if clearing the system cache doesn't work, a factory reset should (just back up anything you don't want to lose).

    Does it really matter whether anyone else has? If you have, that's a problem for you whether or not anyone else has experienced the same issue. Call Apple tech support or take the iPad to an Apple Store, if there's one in your area, and they'll replace the iPad unless it's determined that the problem was caused by some sort of accident rather than a factory defect.

    Setting up syncing
    Before setting up syncing you should download and install the latest version of iTunes. Wi-Fi syncing requires iTunes 10.5 or later and iOS 5 or later. You can change your sync options at any time. Each time you sync, content is synced between your iOS device and computer to reflect new, updated, or deleted content.
    USB syncing
    Open iTunes.
    Connect the iOS device to your computer using the included USB cable and select it in iTunes under Devices on the left-hand side. Some tabs may not appear if you do not have corresponding content in your library. For example if you do not have any podcasts in your library, the corresponding Podcast tab will not appear.
    Click Apply, in the lower-right corner of the screen, to sync.
    Wi-Fi syncing
    Open iTunes
    To set up Wi-Fi syncing, connect your iOS device to your computer with the included USB cable. Select your device under Devices on the left-hand side.
    In the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi".
    Whenever the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it. The iOS device will sync automatically when all of the following are true: 
    The iOS device is plugged in to power
    iTunes is open on the computer
    The iOS device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network
    While the iOS device appears in the left-hand column of iTunes, you can select the content tabs and configure sync options.
    Click Apply or Sync to sync the iOS device.

    Has anyone else's iPhone battery been ruined by the IOS 8.2 update?

    When fully charged I get about 5hrs in idle mode before the battery dies. When actively using, I'm lucky to get 1hr. I've changed all my settings to use as little battery as possible as suggested by many a website. I've also spent an hour on chat to an Apple 'Genius' who basically went through the settings with me. Also it now takes forever to charge my 5s. All was working fine, quick charge and decent battery life, before I updated to 8.2.

    I have just noticed, after installing iPhoto 06, that the app has sorted over 4,000 of my pics in to a '2006' folder. I like taking photos but not 4,000 in 34 days! Nearly all these photos were taken in 2005 (there are separate folders in my library for 2005, '04, '03 and earlier).
    I tried moving the pics in to the correct year folder but that did not work. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    I have a similar (maybe same) problem. I just got a new iMac and imported 9000 images from my external harddrive. Images had been accessed via my WIndox XP computer.
    iPhoto imported images but put several hundred pictures into the wrong "year" folder. 300 pics taken on a 2001 vacation were put into a year 2000 folder (didn't even have a camera in 2000). Some pics taken in 2001 were put into the 2002 folder.
    Can I manually take the pictures from the original/modified 2000 folder and move them into the 2001 folder, ... ?
    Anyone?

    I've seen references to this on here, but no solutions.
    I use my 27" 2010 iMac to share Internet in my home, latest versions of OSX and iOS.. Works fine, sharing with iPhones, an iPad and my Apple TV 2.
    Recently though, I changed to WPA2, and the Apple TV can't see Home Sharing is on. If I switch security (ie WPA2) off, then it can see it again.
    So has anyone found a way to use WPA2 successfully with their Apple TV?

    Unfortunately you have a lot of very questionable old, incompatible, and probably bad software on your Mac that is not playing well with Mavericks.  Some of these can be difficult to uninstall, particularly if you are not familiar with poking around in Mac system folders.
    You might consider cutting to the chase and doing a clean install:
    backup your documents and passwords, network settings, etc.
    Completely erase your hard drive
    Reinstall mavericks and your apps from scratch (not from backups)
    and finally replacing your documents.
    It can be a good thing. Spring cleaning. If you want to go this route, let me know, I can give you some more detailed suggestions for how to do it. The advantage is you can get Mavericks running really fast and reliably, and then be more selective about what you reinstall. A lot of the stuff you have on there is probably from apps you don't even use anymore (like for your Blackberry), or that really aren't necessary.

    I updated my iPhone 4s last night with iOS 6.1 update.  This morning, the battery percentage has been falling at an alarming rate while in standby, and the phone seems to be heating up and staying at an elevated temperature while in standby.  Has anyone else noticed this?  This only started once I did the update.  Any solutions?

    Standard troubleshooting...
    Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    Remove all apps from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Tap and hold any icon in this list until they wiggle
    - Press the red  to delete apps from this list.
    - Press the home button twice when done.
    If still a problem restore with your backup.
    If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
    If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

    Since iOS 5.1.1 update has anyone else noticed a much greater battery consumption on all fronts? My phone used to rock steady all day and know is around 47%  12 noon to 1 pm with the same amount of usage.

    Heres a support question... how the **** do I fix the dramatic battery drain problem that came about after installing 5.1.1?  Suggestions for fixing problems on iTunes did not work.

  • Problems after the last Apple Security Update with trackpad/mouse tapping/clicking

    I do have a MacBook Pro 15 (early 2008), Mac OS X (10.6.8). The logic board was replaced a couple of years ago under Apple warranty (distorted video problem). I am planning to repalce it after the next apple update on the macbook pro line. Before someone asks, I am using Snow Leopard because I still have some programs that needs Rosetta. I did apply the last security update and after I did shutdown and restarted the computer last night, the trackpad/mouse (mighty mouse, usb mouse) is not working properly. I just cannot do the left click or tap on the trackpad. The mighty mouse works perfectly, except the clicking. The same for the trackpad (tapping). I manage to open a pdf file with some keyboard shortcuts. I can use the mouse/trackpad to scroll and zoom in/out the document. I can use the trackpad to rotate the document, etc. Pressing on the might Just can´t tap/clock on the document to select or open it.
    I alread did the obvious thing: command-alt PR, start in safe mode, unplug the power/battery for a few minutes...
    Did you have a similar problem with the last security update. Do you have any suggestions.

    I have resolved the issue! As I mentioned, I am using a Logitech cordless optical mouse. I connected up my Apple keyboard & mouse and disconnected the Logitech. The problem no longer occurred with the Apple mouse.
    I removed the batteries from the Logitech mouse and disconnected the USB receiver. Restarted the computer, reconnected the Logitech setup, disconnected the Apple stuff, and now it is working.

    Hi gang, can anyone help?
    When playing music though the iPod app my earphones (official apple) produce a really odd effect. Strangely the vocals become very quiet and echo-y where as the instruments in the background seem to be playing louder.
    Everything plays fine through the phone speakers and I've tried the headphones on another iphone 4 and they work perfectly.
    I've gone into the settings and turned sound check, EQ and volume limit off and it hasn't had any affect.
    Any suggestions? I only got the thing at the weekend!!

    Hi and welcome,
    Make sure your headphones are plugged in all the way. They use a four conductor plug now and it is easy not to get them in all the way.
    If you were getting crossed stereo signals by the plug not seating that could cause the effect you are hearing.
    With all iDevices there is a system of things you can do. Turn the the device off then back on, Reset the device ( hold home and sleep/wake till you see the Apple logo) and last resort restore. When doing restore i always do this as a new phone. You will have to reload and manually set up most things but it will usually fix weird stuff like what you are experiencing.
    That said the Reset is the one that works most of the time. It you get through the restore and the phone still has issues take it back. It certainly could be faulty. These are mass produced and mistakes will be made. Don't delay taking it back. Apple is good about replacing stuff under warranty.

  • Has anyone else had something slip behind the screen?

    First of all, I thought the displays were *at least* somewhat shielded, as to prevent little things from making their way behind/between the screen.
    Anyway, when I took my MBP out of my Timbuk2 commute bag, then out of it's Radtech Powersleev yesterday, I noticed a piece of hair on the screen. Now this is not unusual for most of us, and those of us who are anal dust off the screen or whatever to remove said debris. I attempted this, only to find that it was not coming off! I look closer and see that a piece of hair made it inside my display and dropped into its current position! How the heck? Gentle attempts to "shake" this piece of hair were unsuccessful, so I assume it'd have to be taken apart to be removed, or the screen replaced.
    Has anyone else had this kind of problem recently? Did Apple take care of it for you? I've never actually seen this firsthand, although a brief search through the internet brought forth varied results.

    This has happened too me with an eyelash and i took it too the apple store and they said tough luck....I hate my apple store here in Milwaukee they are a bunch of jerks...'m so tempted to take the 2 hour drive to Chicago to their apple store to get better service

    I recently got told about the new software update for OS Yosemite.  It was version 3.8.2 v1.1 and since then my mac crashes a lot, and can't handle simple tasks. Like playing a 3 minute song, checking emails, and even whilst typing this its crashed so many more times than i've lost count. Has anyone else had this problem? And what do you recommend I do?

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    The person who told you it would hold 2000+ songs was stretching the truth. This might be true with 128kbps MP3 files. Not true with 256kbps AAC files (like from the iTunes store). 
    128kbps MP3s are around 2 to 4MB each. 2000 x 3MB = 6GB.
    256kbps AAC files are often 5 to 10MB each
    The average size of your daughter's music files is 6.5GB/900 = 7.2MB
    1400 songs at 7.2MB = 14GB
    Many of us have the problem of not being able to sync our entire music collections.  In that you are not alone. The answer about converting to 128kbps AAC is a possible solution. It sacrifices sound quality for size, though.  My solution is to sync what I usually want to listen to. I have many songs that I rarely listen to; the result of ripping complete CDs, including all the "filler" songs.

  • HT1766 Has anyone else had a problem with their phone after using the cable to upload photos from Camera stream to computer photo program?  My phone is frozen, cannot get into use phone, cannot connect to the Internet, and even APPLE is stumped.

    I only have my IPhone5 for two months and am very upset that now they may need to give me a new phone and lose anything that may not have been recently backed up by the phone.  Has anyone else had this problem?  How did you reseolve it?  Hard reboots did not help.
