Has anyone figured out a good way to draw an arc in Keynote?

I'm trying to switch over from PowerPoint to Keynote, but one thing that I use all the time in the presentations I use is the arc (specifically, the arc with an arrow at the end of it).
As far as I can tell, it is impossible to draw such a thing in Keynote, though it seems like such a simple thing. It is possible to create the arc in PowerPoint, copy it, and paste it into Keynote, but it can not be manipulated in any way except resizing it after that.
This is probably a feature request, but I thought that I'd at least ask if anyone else has confronted this problem and successfully conquered it in some way. I suppose I could draw an oval with no fill, and obscure the oval by some object that matches the background (if I use a solid color background), and draw the arrow heads by hand, but it's (a) a lot of work, and (b) not going to look good, and (c) hard to manipulate after it has been created.

This can be done in Keynote -- it is a bit cumbersome, but offers a huge amount of flexibility in the final product:
- In the Shapes menu in the toolbar, choose the Draw an Arbitrary Shape option (the last one with the pen).
- Click once to start a line, a second time to produce an endpoint, and then press Escape to stop drawing. You will now have a line.
- In the Graphic Inspector, set the Fill to "none", the Stroke to whatever colour you want the line to be, and use the Endpoints menus to add an arrowhead.
- To make this line an arc, select the line, then in the Format menu, under the Shape flyout menu, choose "Make Editable". The line should now show a red dot at each end, which are Bezier control points and you can now add a third Bezier control point to the line, which is how you will make it arc.
- With the line selected and the control points visible, hold down the Option key. Your cursor should change to a pen nib with a plus sign, indicating that you can add a control point on the line. Click on the middle of the line to add a point.
- You can drag this point with the cursor, and it will create an angle in the line. By default the point is a corner, and so the angle is sharp. Double click on the point to make it a smooth curve point. You will now see two Bezier control handles on either side of the point tangential to the curve. You can move the handles to change how the curve looks (such as how tight or wide the curve is). You can manipulate each handle individually, or hold down the Option key to affect both handles.
This procedure sounds more difficult than it actually is in practice, and the arc you get can be completely customized as you like. That said, if you find you use the same basic shape over and over, you might consider creating a "clippings" presentation that has various re-used elements in it, so that you can easily copy and paste from it to other presentations.

Ok really now...has anyone figured out a new way to select a portion of a project and output just that part?? Or is it still a 20 step process?? What is the best/fastest way to give my client a teaser clip??

Still a 20 step process, many ways to approch it. Duplicate project and selectively delete everything around it. Or select and copy what you need. I think it could be a year before apple makes that step a 2 or 3 step process.

Whoever told you Elements 3 won't work in Leopard was simply wrong. It does. Elements 2 and Photoshop 7 will not work, Elements 3 and Photoshop CS1 will both work. My understanding is that the code for both the non-working ones was a kludge of the original code built for the Classic Mac OS to get it to run natively in OS X, and, since Leopard no longer supports Classic code in any way neither PS 7 nor Elements 2 will work, ever. Don't know whether that theory about the code is correct or not, but it sounds sorta reasonable. But whether that is the explanation is irrelevant: Elements 2 and PS 7 do not work in Leopard.
Why not do what I'm going to do: get off Adobe's gravy train. I'm going to buy Elements 6 when it comes out (which is about half what it costs to upgrade my CS1 to CS3), and spend some more quality time with the GIMP. No more upgrades of Photoshop for me.

  • Has anyone figured out a way to rename a dynamic time series member?

Our client uses trimesters instead of quarters or halfs in their financial reporting. We need to use dynamic time series but do not want to use Q-T-D or S-T-D members because they don't quite make sense to the client. We attempted to rename Q-T-D to T-T-D in the planning app repository unique names table but received an error. Has anyone figured out a way to rename a dynamic time series member or is it just not possible and we will have an alias that doesn't jive with the member name?

I think the option is probably to use an alias, you shouldn't really be trying to hack the planning tables as it is essbase that controls DTS.

  • Has anyone figured out a way to open Photoshop 7 in Leopard?

Photoshop 7 won't open in Leopard according to all the forums. But SOMEBODY must have a workaround besides booting into Tiger or upgrading (and dealing with Adobe's computer-specific registration). Has anyone figured out a way to make this work yet?
By the way, my old Photoshop Elements 3 will open in Leopard, though it's not supposed to either.

  • Has anyone figured out a way to make the first desktop on Lion/Mountain Lion moveable?

Has anyone figured out a way to make the first desktop on Lion/Mountain Lion moveable? I.e. I can reorder all the other desktops but I can't change the position of the very first one. I just don't use it becasue I am changing the order of my desktops a lot, and it's annoying to not be able to put any other desktop before Desktop 1. Thanks!

or my actual question is -- is there anything inherantly wrong with this approach.. i mean, if i can get it to make it through consistently, is there a problem with it repeating / updating the variable so many times in a row? is it a drain on system resources or can it break anything etc.?
Although I'm far from being an expert in programming, I would answer NO. Imho, you've just got a brillant idea! (As for “repeating / updating the variable so many times in a row”… you could add a short delay (like “delay 1”) inside the repeat block, but I don't think it's a must.)

  • Has anyone figured out how to get speech recognition working with sticky keys enabled on mountain lion?

I'm trying to use speech recognition to input text on my iMac running the latest mountain lion, 10.8.3.
    I have sticky keys enabled.
When I try to start speaking by pressing the function key twice nothing happens. I can only get it to work if I disable sticky keys.
The same problem occurs with all the other modifier keys as shortcut, they do not work with sticky keys.
When I try to select a different shortcut, I am unable to select a two key combination, but am limited to one.
If I select the F6 key, or any other single key, I am able to start speech recognition. However the second time that I press the key, it does not stop recognition and process my words. Instead, it restarts the recognition.
Has anyone figured out how to get speech recognition working with sticky keys enabled?
Or a way to get an individual key shortcut to start on the first press and process it on the second?
Or a way to get key combinations to work, as specified by the help:
    Dictation On and Off
    To use Dictation, click On.
When you’re ready to dictate text, place the insertion point where you want the dictated text to appear and press the Fn (function) key twice. When you see the lighted microphone icon and hear a beep, the microphone is ready for you to speak your text.
    Shortcut
By default, you press the Fn (Function) key twice to start dictation. If you like, you can choose a different shortcut from the menu.
To create a shortcut that’s not in the list, choose Customize, and then press the keys you want to use. You can press two or more keys to create your shortcut.

I noticed with version 10.8.4 of OS X that I am now able to select F6 to activate, and the return key to complete the speech recognition. This is still different than the description of how these should function that's included in the help, but at least it's an improvement.

  • Has anyone figured out how to scan from an HP officejet Pro 8600 after upgrading to OS 10.9.4

Has anyone figured out how to scan to  a MacBook Pro with 10.9.4 from HP officejet Pro 8600?

iMovie acts as it does, I suspect, because it's so much safer (and easier) to program.
As iMovie is now structured, each clip has a startFrame and an endFrame. They show the starting point and ending point of that clip in its source file. There's only one of each. Simple.
For us to remove a portion of the middle without splitting the clip in two, iMovie would have to allow each clip to have multiple start/end points. So iMovie would have to "remember" that the clip starts playing at frame 100, stops at frame 120, starts again at frame 150, stops at frame 200, and so on. Very complicated.
The amount of data that would be required to undo a change, for example, could become quite large, and be very, very complicated. Lots of opportunity for errors. Imagine what iMovie would have to "remember" if we could remove the middle, added a title to the clip, remove part of the title, then split the clip and applied a slow motion effect to the second part of the split.
This way is simpler, and not all that inconvenient for users, in my opinion. I prefer simple when it adds to reliability.

  • Has anyone figured out how to make the Yamaha 01V96i mixer work with Logic 9.1.8

Has anyone figured out how to make the Yamaha 01V96i mixer work with Logic 9.1.8 as a control surface ?

    In YAMAHA01v96i:
Go to DIO/SETUP select Generic DAW. Go to MIDI settings page and set the desired port (personally I use Number 1), Select the same audio frequency you use in your DAW (I use 44.1KhZ)...at this point You should save a scene in you 01V96i to avoid to repeat all the procedure again.
Open studio manager, go to patch and set the input port from 17 to 32 respectively to USB1-USB16 (this will give you the return from you DAW to the 01v96i
Save again the scene overwriting the old one.
    in LOGIC
Click on preferences, select Audio then select 01v96i, then click on control surface and select Mackie design Baby HUI and in the midi session set the same port that you've been setting on the Yamaha 01V96i (Port 1 if you follow this example).
    That's more or less it.
    It worked for me...so far

    Hi,
It may be that you will need to 'reset' Internet Explorer, but you can certainly check if this issue is being caused by an add-on as follows.
Click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, open System Tools and click on 'Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)'.  See if Internet Explorer now runs correctly.
    Let me know.

  • HT4528 Has anyone figured out peer-to-peer airplay?

I have updated my operating system on my iPhone, my iPad and I have a third generation Apple TV. Peer-to-peer airplay is not working without Wi-Fi as I thought it would. Is anyone figure this out?

    Hi collinbrooksie,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
To use AirPlay with your Apple TV and iOS device, they must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Please reference the attached article for more information.
Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
