Has anyone installed Leopard on Original Powerbook G4?

Hello everyone, I would like to ask if anyone has installed Leopard on their original Powerbook G4, 17"
with 1G Ram and 1Gz Processor? Does anyone think it will work okay? or will it slow the computer down? Thanks for answering in advance.

I've been itching to buy a nice new 17" MacBook Pro but in light of Apple's apparent big slide in MB Pro's quality control, I'm putting it off for a while.
There's no shortage of folks who are having problems with them; just check the MacBook Pro threads, here.
And four of my five friends in the film animation industry who have purchased MacBook Pros in the past year have had to return them due to defects, i.e. screen problems, fan problems, overheating problems, keyboard problems, assorted other problems.....some are already on their 3rd MB Pro and STILL no joy.
It seems that getting a problem free MacBook Pro right out of the box is a total crapshoot. Certainly outrageous for a $2800 machine.
So I'm waiting, and keeping my fingers crossed, in hope that the quality control issues are remedied. But, God, I want one really badly!

I have a mid-2007 MacBook that I have not yet installed Lion on.  Has anyone installed it on a similar MacBook?  If so, how does it run?
I have a brand new MacBook Pro running Lion, so I am familar with it.  I am just curious if it will be really slow on the MacBook.
    Thanks.
    Thom

I think it depends on what you need to do with the computer. I have a 2007 black macbook with 4gb ram. Most stuff works ok, although everything is noticeably slower. But some stuff, Aperture in particular, barely work at all - aperture is almost unuseably slow. So be forewarned! And please, don't believe anyone who says it'll run just as well as snow leopard - it doesn't.

  • Has anyone installed the GIMP?

Has anyone installed the GIMP on their iBook? I have a couple questions because of the way their site is worded:
    http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/
In the requirements section are they just explaining why it doens't run on version 9 or earlier? It almost makes it sound like you have to go download that stuff (which is why I feel stupid for asking this). :-/
This site, http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net/ , which is the first site they list on the places to get GIMP, makes it sound like the application there is all you have to download, except for the extra install from the OS X Install Disk. Would that be all I needed?
I'd love to have this program on my iBook, so if anyone who has installed it could walk me through it, that'd be great.
    Thanks,
    Mandy

    Hi Mandy,
I myself have not tried GIMP.app because I have lost the urge to use X11. In order to use it, you will to download X11 from your OS X disk and install X11; not to be confused with X11SDK. I bet you can find a bunch of GIMP and X11 users in Mac OS X Technologies > Unix forum.
You may want to look at this previous post.

  • Has anyone installed 9i for Solaris8(for SPARC) on Solaris8- X86 (for Intel)

Has anyone installed 9i (9.0.1.1) on solaris8-X86 (intel). I know it is not available on the Oracle website for download. I was wondering if anyone has tried installing the sparc version on Intel.
I have done the same for 8i but don't know if it can be done for 9i.
    Thanks

I know this seems silly, but an "eval" version of 9i for Solaris Intel was available from the Oracle Store for the cost of the media. I have also found when I went from Solaris 8 10/01 to Solaris 8 02/02 that 9i came with the OS for the Sparc. I haven't upgraded my Intel boxes yet so I don't know if the same trick applies!
Not quite what you asked, but....

  • Has anyone installed the new firmware?

Has anyone installed the new firmware yet? And have you noticed any issues with it? I'm weary of installing Apple's firmware updates after how terrible the last one was (I'm sure everyone remembers the hdd hangs). Also, Apple's trackpad update was terrible as well for the first few weeks it was out.

Because I was one of the users affected last time.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10416721#10416721
Not just a tiny amount of people. Lots of people had this issue. Firmware downgrade is what solved it, until Apple released an upgrade of the upgrade. I just wanted to check if anyone was having issues with this firmware before I upgraded.
And I'm not sure why people are getting so offended. It's a simple question of "did upgrading to the new firmware screw up your computer", and requires a yes or a no answer. The last two times I installed an update it messed with my computer, so it makes sense for me to be weary. You would be as well if you were in the same situation. And I have not yet heard anything about this firmware, but I haven't had time to check out what people have said. I'm in med school and I'm usually fairly busy.

  • Installing Leopard on a powerbook that has no OS and no DVD drive

    Hi!
I just did a total booboo and now I can't get myself out of a bind. My old powerbook G4 had a very fragmented, slow, buggy Leopard installed, so I decided to wipe the system clean and reinstall. Since the DVD drive is now broken, I needed another way to do the system install, and I thought I'd use the "target" mode.
Except of course I did it the wrong way. I put the Powerbook in target mode, and installed Leopard through my macbook pro. I got a couple of error messages along the way (like "you have to repartition in GUID format", which seemed strange, but I followed the instructions), but I finished the install, rebooted the computers, and got...
the folder with the question mark.
Looking at forum posts here, I realize I should have put the macbook pro in target mode, but I can't do that anymore since I wiped the system from the powerbook. How can I install Leopard on it now? Anybody's got a suggestion?
    Many thanks for your help!

    Princess Karlotta:
I should have put the macbook pro in target mode, but I can't do that anymore since I wiped the system from the powerbook.
I believe you can. Try it this way:
    • Boot the MacBook Pro with working optical drive in Firewire Target Disk Mode.
    • Insert install disk into Target Computer's (MBP's) optical drive.
    • Connect computers via firewire cable
    • Startup the PowerBook G4 (computer to which you want to install) holding down the Option button immediately after the chime.
    • Select Install Disk for startup and click on the straight arrow.
    • Proceed with Installation
(Using this procedure essentially temporarily coverts the MBP into an expensive external DVD drive.)
    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

  • Has anyone installed the samsung 840 pro in MBP mid 2009?

    Hi All,
My macbook doesnt work anymore because the HDD gave up. I now ordered the samsung 840 pro ssd. My mbp doesn't start up anymore and all I can see is the file boz and a ? mark. I have the CD that came with the macbook. Is it hard to install the software or should I just take it to apple and let them do the job?
Also, I only bought the 128 GB since I cannot afford the 256g. I have a seagate 1 TB external hardrive. Can anyone please tell me what to do to set all downloads and other documents to save in the external so I am not using all the 128 g

    JS28,
I installed a Samsung 840 PRO SSD in my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro. It’s not hard to install the software onto your SSD, though it will take some time to do so. I don’t know how much Apple would charge for that service, so the time vs. money tradeoff is something that you’ll need to decide.
If you decide to do it yourself, what you’ll need to do is to boot your MacBook Pro from the grey installation DVD marked “Mac OS X Install DVD” that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro; to do that, hold down the C key as you power up. Once you’ve booted up from the DVD, you’ll need to run Disk Utility to format your SSD as “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. Once it’s been formatted, you can then install the version of Mac OS X that is on that DVD, either Leopard or Snow Leopard. Once your MacBook Pro’s original version of Mac OS X is installed on the SSD, you can then reboot from the SSD, and optionally install the iLife applications from the “Applications Install DVD” — the other grey installation DVD that came with your MacBook Pro.
Next, you’ll  need to upgrade or update your OS to Mac OS X 10.6.8, which in turn will allow you to access the App Store, so that you can redownload Mountain Lion for installation. Once you’ve installed Mountain Lion on your SSD, it will then have the Mountain Lion recovery partition installed also.
To ensure that your downloads and documents are saved to your external Seagate HDD, be sure to choose a location on that drive whenever you download a file or save a document. Each application that you use will probably need to be set to download/save to your external HDD, but each of them should remember that external HDD location for future downloads/saves.

  • Has anyone installed Mavericks on an older (circa 2006 or 2007) Mac Pro 1.1 ?

I'm running OS X 10.6.8 on an older Mac Pro desk top.
Needing to upgrade Adobe Lightroom 3 to LR 5 and it requires OS 10.7 or higher.
Apple's specs for Mavericks call for a Mac Pro 2008 or newer.
Has anyone successfully installed Mavericks on an older Mac Pro?

Yah. But just try booting a MacOS volume that you have forgotten to install the driver in. Yikes!
I will be installing Snow Leopard on Friday. That won't be a sensible thing for anyone to attempt if a GTX-285 is fitted in the computer.
I have taken the precaution of reinstalling my 8800GT to permit a trouble-free Snow install.
If I knew Snow will install a GTX-200 series driver there would have been no need to do this. But I have no indication that Apple's new OS will support the new card. I hope it does.
Even if it does, the latest EVGA/nVidia driver for the MacOS is awful, nothing like the WindowsXP driver's superb performance. I do a lot with 3D entertainment, games and Second Life. Using those with the GTX-285 in the MacOS is torture. MacOSX drivers for both the 8800GT and the GTX-285 are terrible when running Second Life in comparison to Windows versions on both those cards.
Currently, the 8800GT is a far better card than the GTX-285 is in 10.5.8 for Second Life.
Will Snow address those driver concerns? We'll know soon enough.

From the FIOS area in a simluar thread..
i like the online version of the app at www.verizon.com/repair
you can do a lot of the functions of the app without all the bloatware.
    and
As other have said it does something, it waste resources.  Not sure on the MAC, but on PC's it has been none to drive at least one cpu to 100% (If you only have one its really bad).  And the number of functions it does that you might ever want to do is minimal.
Personally I recommend that you uninstall it, and make sure you get all pieces of it.

  • I can't install leopard on my powerbook G4

I have all of the system requirements needed to run leopard 10.5 on my computer. First I bought leopard and cleared the disk verification, I get the "base system error." I called for support for 2 hours and the man said it was an error on the installation disk. However, after exchanging it for a new disk I encountered the same error. So I took my laptop down to the store and a genius said it was a problem with the hard drive and that once I got it back leopard would be installed with a new HD. NO, despite the claims on the terms of the apple care contract they had not installed the most recent version of OS X, which I paid for. When I got my laptop back after 2 weeks of ordeals of shop repair, i get back what appears to be my RAM in a bag and a now scratched leopard disk. So I try to install leopard in the store and once I put the disk in the screen turns black with the pin wheel of death. Now it won't even make it to the installation phase! What is going on! They took it back and now I'm out of a computer for another week. So I would appreciate it if anyone knows anything about my problem and what happens if apple is unable to fix my computer. Do I get a new computer that is able to run leopard like apple claims? Do I ask for a refund of my 2000 dollars I paid for the computer? Thank you. <Edited by Moderator>

+"I can't see that it's too much to ask to be able to use those purchases as I wish, do you?"+
You are entitled to use the software that came with your computer +on that computer+. Period. Each machine comes with it's own software. If you want to upgrade the software that came with the computer, you have to pay for the new software. So, in this regard, yes, it's too much to ask. "Piracy" is an accepted term for misusing software in violation of the EULA which you must agree to when you install the software. If you violate the terms of that agreement, you are acting illegally. If you don't want to call it piracy, how about stealing? Ripping off? Whatever. Prisons are full of people who figured the law did not apply to them or that the law was "wrong" or "excessive". But it's still the law....

  • I'm desperately needing advice to a common question.  I use Quicken and love it.  But the Mac version is not as great as the PC.   Has anyone installed it by segmenting their Mac with Parallels or Fusion or Boot camp.  If so, which one do you recommend.

I'm desperately needing advice.  New Mac.   Used Quicken on my PC.  Researched all software for Financial programs and Quicken is still the most recommended.   I want to use Quicken on my Mac.  The Mac version is not highly rated so I would need to partition my Mac.   Has anyone done this for their quicken program and if so, which partitioning program did you use - Parallels, Fusion ware or Boot camp?
    Thx

Thanks.  Hadn't heard of it. ?  Is there any concern installing this free program on my Mac.    Have you used it?  Apart from being free is there any other advantage of Parallels and VMfusion. ?
Virtual Box is safe and well developed, it offers similar or identical features to the paid competition, it may be a little less polished but that's all.
Download and try it out, nothing to lose (except time).

  • Has anyone installed XMLP in a multi-node appsTiers  environment?

We are experiencing a problem with installing XMLP 4.5.
Our EBS 11i(11.5.9) configuration: dbTier is on HP-UX, admin/CM of appsTier is on HP-UX and web/forms of appsTier is on Windows, i.e two nodes appsTier.
Applying the major patch 3554613 (XMLP 4.5) created $APPL_TOP/xdo/11.5.0 on both UNIX and Windows nodes. But the $JAVA_TOP/oracle/apps/xdo is only created on UNIX node.
When we reported the problem of XMLP in relation to OA Framework (see my other posting on this forum) to Oracle, the support engineer said the patch should create %JAVA_TOP%\oracle\apps\xdo on Windows too. But he is not sure as he only has a single node environment.
We tried a couple of times of reapplying the patch without any luck.
We start wondering if the XMLP 4.5 can be successfully installed in a multi-node appsTiers environment.
    So my question is:
Has anyone successfully installed XMLP in a multi-node appsTiers environment?
    Thanks.

    Hi
XMLP is installed on the apps middle tier so it should be no problem. The only thing, once you have it installed is if you want to use our cfg file you'll need to have the cfg file installed on all nodes.
    Whats the TAR number ?
