Has Anyone NOT Tried LiveType Yet ? Take A Look At This.

At the beginning of the year I made a 7 minute video demonstrating just a tiny percentage of the numerous effects available with LiveType.
It was designed to show PC members of my video club what was available to FCE users.
For any of you who have not yet tried LiveType, take a look at this video. It does get a bit L - O - N - G .... (or boring?) but it might whet your appetite.
There is a short film at the end.
Be warned, there is a tremendous loss of quality when viewed on the web but I hope it gives a flavour of the original:-

Ian.

I certainly don't want to squash anyone's accomplishments here, but I just wanted to give my two cents on what I feel is LiveType's very limited use. I have a problem with pre-fab software in general, simply because I usually have a very hard time fitting it to my needs. Granted, I have probably not spent as much time LiveType as I should to be making these criticisms, but every time I go through LT and make some titles, all I want to do is tweak them fit the visual style I want. For whatever reason, I do not find LT's interface very intuitive, and leave frustrated. I get the impression that LT isn't really design for hand crafting effects (I could be wrong?).
I also find that the pre-fab effects in LT are really over the top. How many uses am I going to have for text that appears in a slot machine, or has lightning flying off of it in all different directions? Usually, I'm looking for something that's subtle, effective, and graphically pleasing. A lot of LT's effects just scream Public Access (or old school Video Toaster).
In a pinch, it does provide a lot of options. But I think if you find yourself in the pro world, most studios are going to shy away from it because people are going to know its stock pre-fab LT from a mile away. I know sometimes I'll be watching an ad on TV and hear some of the stock Soundtrack loops, and I'll just laugh to myself.
What I'm saying is, LT will only take you so far in adding fancy-schmancy effects. I know its easy, I know its free. But if you suddenly find yourself getting that itch for motion graphics, take the time to check out Motion (which is also pretty easy and straightforward) or After Effects (which honestly, has endless possbilities).
*Sorry if that sounded a little over-zealous. After I posted I realized I was in the FCE forum. Still, if you find you really like this kind of stuff, check out the Pro software**

Yes, it's come up a number of times. If you look to the right under "more like this", you'll find threads that may offer useful suggestions.

  • Has anyone even tried?

OK......Has anyone ever tried playing a pc game on a mac? This means insert the pc disk, click install, and etc. I searched online and found nothing. Wouldn't that be funny if pc games actually DID work on a mac an no one tried it because everyone said the OS's were so different.....but that's likely not true. Just wanted to know what would happen should i decide on a whim to pop in a pc game and start installation. Would an error code pop up or would the mac overreact, show a countdown starting at five, and at zero completely explode on me?

Yes, a lot of people do.

    Hmm, yes.
I searched online and found nothing.
Because you didn't look in the right locations.

Well people do run PC games on a Mac.
Just wanted to know what would happen should i decide on a whim to pop in a pc game and start installation. Would an error code pop up or would the mac overreact, show a countdown starting at five, and at zero completely explode on me?
Depends what software you had installed, but explode? No.
The disk won't install and likely just popup on the desktop with a bunch of files in it for copying off.
Mac's can boot Windows just like a PC. So if you stuck a install disk for a PC game into a Mac with Windows, it would install just like any other PC.
If you stuck a install disk for a PC game into a Mac with virtual machine software running with Windows, it would install just like any other PC.
In fact if you had the right PC game disk and something like Crossover or Wine installed, it could run the PC install disk on a Mac too.
But loading a PC game disk into OS X directly, without any help, of course not, it won't work as the operating systems are different.
As you can see, I'm running a Windows game in Windows 7, in OS X on my Mac and getting over 40 fps too.

  • Has anyone not working with .dv files had synchronization problems?

Has anyone not working with .dv files had sound synchronization problems? I'm not exactly sure what the alternatives to DV are, but I think one of them is HD.
The reason for asking this question is to help isolate the nature and cause of a very serious flaw in iMovie '11. In the original release of iMovie '11 (version 9.0) there was a small--but serious--synchronization problem. In the 9.01 there is a large synchronization problem. We know of one person who has not experienced the problem, and he is not working with DV files (media). So we want to find out if anyone who is using something other than .dv files is experiencing a lack of synchronization between sound and picture. Knowing the answer to this will help with figuring out where the cause lies. For the initial iMovie '11 release (9.0), you probably would not notice a problem unless you had very long event-clips, e.g., two hours long. Events get this long if you are transferring from analog 8 mm tapes. Even then, it would have to be in scenes in which the connection between event and sound is obvious, e.g., close ups of people talking. It isn't until the 9.01 release that most people would notice anything. All we need to do is establish one case of a synchronization problem in which the person is using something other than DV.

Hopefully, the 9.0.2 release will make my question moot. Zyfert must have posted the announcement of the release just as I was formulating my question. Still, if you have information on the subject, it would be interesting to hear.

T4i... lousy SD video... has anyone used SD and had final edit look ok. on timeline its a disaster. cell phone does better video.. im a pro video type and at this point may return cam and wait for a more capable eos.. like a mirrorless 60d...

    Speedorms,
I would like to help determine what is causing this.
What exactly are you seeing that is poor quality in the video from your EOS Rebel T4i?
What are you using to edit your video?
What settings are you using to edit the video?
When you refer to SD, are you referring to the card in the camera or Standard Definition video?
If you prefer a mirrorless design, we do have the new EOS M.  You may want to take a look at that model to see if it has the features you are looking for.

In the iPhone backup. Right click on the phone in iTunes and choose "Restore from Backup".

  • Please take a look at this. Attempting to make a professional brochure/bound 5-page presentation.

Please take a look at this template I made for a Statement of Qualifications pamphlet.
Here is a link to google drive. I made this template from scratch in Photoshop CS6.
    SOQ Page_Blank(no lettering).pdf - Google Drive
What I am curious about, is that some of the lettering often looks blurry, although the page is 500pixels per inch 8.5x11, 76MB .psd file. What can I do about that?
Also, I want to make it easy to write and edit the actual content that will go onto the page. Not all of us here have photoshop to edit the lettering. Is there a way I can export this to word so they can edit the content whenever? Are there better options (programs) to help me design this template? I am guessing I am somewhat pushing photoshops limit as to making a bound 5-page presentation. I am stuck and would like this to be easier. All suggestions for both of my questions as well as overall action toward making this would be great.
Here is an example of a SOQ Pamphlet that I have been using as reference. In my eyes the design is perfect!

    Any help is great,
    Thanks,
    Adam

Since photoshop can not do pages, your on the right track by using pdf format. Since it can do pages, but really requires acrobat pro to bind the pages together.
Your best bet is InDesign then Illustrator would be the next option. Each of these can do multi page documents.
There is absolutely no reason to use 500px/inch for the resolution anything between 150 and 300 would suffice leaning towards 300ppi.
If the text is blurred a few things that can cause that, 1) anti-aliasing 2) document was created as a low resolution then upsampled 3) text is rasterized 4) document is rasterized.

  • Has anyone NOT liked their MacBook?

    Hi All,
I am a brand new Mac user, after using Windows for about 20 years. I REALLY wanted a Mac, mostly because I'd heard how great they were for digital photography (which a do a lot of) and because they were less virus-prone, more reliable, user friendly, etc. Everyone I know who has one loves them. Well, I got a MacBook for Christmas and I am running into lots of problems and am getting increasingly frustrated.
A few examples: I use AOL (I have for a long time and want to keep it) but it seems that mac and AOL don't play well together (no main screen updates, it dumps me off of AOL for no reason occasionally, not as many options as on my windows system, etc.
I also have tried repeatedly to download Adobe Flashplayer to see visuals on websites (eg, from my son's school website) and despite downloading the correct version I get an error message saying the disk images failed to mount and the reason was "not recognized"
These are just a couple of the issues I've encountered and I do realize that some of this is that I'm still on the early part of the learning curve, but I'm wondering if I'm just not an "apple person". Can anyone give me some encouragement here? Also, any advice on where to go for help...I bought the computer online from the Apple Store (and did buy the AppleCare plan along with it); there is a bricks and mortar Apple Store about 30 minutes from where I live. Should I go there with it and my questions (is this even something they could help me with?)
Up til now I've always felt very competent about my computer skills, so this is throwing me for a loop. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
i love my "late 2006" MacBook!
So much so, that i bought the late 2007 Santa Rosa MacBook (pre-installed with Leopard) to upgrade it...
...but on further review, i actually kept the "older" one, and will be listing the newer one (still sealed) on eBay next week.
unfortunately, i cannot comment on AOL and Macs...
but for EVERYTHING else, my MacBook has been a dream!
i've purchased everything you can get to keep it looking pristine:
    *full keyboard and palmrest protector
    *Speck clear plastic protective case
    *trackpad protective die-cut patch
*Applecare extended warranty (have not needed it yet...)
*and just recently an Exim screen protector (bought for the newer MacBook)
...and given the opportunity to upgrade the older MacBook, i passed!
In terms of getting assistance with your new Mac, Apple retail stores have a service called One-to-One, where you pay about $99.00 a year and you can schedule a one hour session each week and get quality tutoring on various topics of your own choosing! They might even have a trial session to check it out... you might want to consider it, i have found it very helpful! :o)
    blue skies,

  • Has anyone ever tried to create an own application (T681A)

    Hello,
i want to use message determination for an "own" application. So has anyone tried to make an entry - "legal or illegal" - in table T681A?.
As there are reserved namespaces in this table and as it is a new entry, it should not harm anything. But you never know.
So i post this to get an opinion from the community.
    Regards
    Jürgen

Generally you cannot buy a gift card with a gift card and I suspect that applies to going between the Apple Store and the iTunes Store.

  • Has anyone here tried BSD?

    Hi there,
We all know that Archlinux is BSD-like.However,has anyone here really experienced BSD,like FreeBSD,OpenBSD,NetBSD......What about that?:D

I'm using FreeBSD on my desktop that I'm typing from right now, Arch is on the laptop.
About a year ago, I started to get really frustrated with Linux distros -- thanks to Linux itself.  You upgrade the kernel and stuff breaks.  Kernel devs implement shiny new stuff instead of making sure that it at least works.  I thought that using some less bleeding-edge distro than Arch would make things better, but I can't stand Debian, Gentoo is broken, Ubuntu and Fedora are too overcomplicated for me.  So I switched to Windows.  I was happy for some time, but my fingers are too used to the shell, and stuff like Cygwin just doesn't cut it.  Then I found FreeBSD and been using it ever since.
The system itself is very simple and clean.  Documentation is excellent so there's no smashing your head against the keyboard involved.  All you really get is a basic Unix system: you have a shell, an editor (vi, ed), a compiler and the base necessary tools.  You then build the rest yourself.
Third-party software management is a bit different from Linux distros.  Linux distros are almost all about package management.  Some distros also provide shiny stuff and patches everywhere, but we're on Arch forums and we know well Arch doesn't do that: Arch merely packages stuff and makes sure the packages work well together.  Arch devs don't develop the kernel, they just package it.  They don't develop base system utilities, they just package them.  FreeBSD, on the other hand, is the kernel and the base tools.  It does provide rather simple tools for package management (pkg_add, pkg_delete), and you can optionally install the Ports Tree, which is just a system of makefiles that take care of fetching, configuring and building software for you.  Or you can install stuff yourself, though that's not recommended.  FreeBSD isn't about the software that you install or how you install it, it's about providing you with the base platform on which the software can run.
That said, I find the Ports Tree very mature and easy to use.  You can install third party scripts that will help you with software management, like portupgrade or portmaster (the latter being my favourite).  But the system itself is very simple and thus easy to understand -- there's no magic involved.
(Some posters before me have mentioned packages being outdated.  You probably were running a -RELEASE version, which is all fine and great, but it also means that the packages that are fetched by default are the packages that were available and built when -RELEASE was released.  You can define the environment variable PACKAGESITE to point pkg_add to newer packages.  It's all explained in the handbook -- especially the grey note may be of interest to you.)
During my day-to-day desktop usage, I don't see any difference from my previous Arch desktop.  I have Xfce running, with Opera, Pidgin, Transmission, ePDFReader, and a bunch of terminals.  I don't like shiny stuff, I didn't have it on Arch, I don't have it here.  If you want, though, you can have it, there's no difference -- GUI software doesn't usually suffer any portability problems between Linux and FreeBSD.  If I sat you at my desktop, I think you wouldn't even tell this is not a Linux distro, until you typed "uname -a" into the terminal.
HAL may be even more pain on FreeBSD than it is on Linux, but I hate HAL, I hated it when I was using Arch, I had it disabled back then, I have it disabled now.  I have seen people reporting they got it to work successfully on FreeBSD, though.  So if you like things like automounting, I believe you can have them.  But I'm not of the sort of people who like auto- stuff, myself.
All in all, if you like barebones simplicity and like learning new things (it's different from Linux!), I don't see why you couldn't just give it a try.  You can install it into VirtualBox, if you don't feel like messing up your primary PC and get some feel for what the system is and is not about.
