Has anyone tried Codeweavers Crossover program???

Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone has tried Codeweavers Crossover program to get Windows programs to run on a Mac. I'm interested in getting a couple of programs running on the Mac that I used everyday in Windows.
Thanks, Roger

Thanks both Lacewing and Roger9070, there are now two pages: the first article which was sort of an overview and a follow-up this week in which I actually experienced the joys of installing software using Crossover.
If you are still Windows-based, then Crossover is not for you; but if you are moving all operations to OS X but have one (pedantic) program that is only available for Windows, then this might be your answer, with the added advantages that you neither need a copy of Windows, nor a partition for it. It s not perfect and does not work in every case, but it does demonstrate an alternative for those with particular needs.
I urge an examination of the Crossover site and a look at their lists of software. I believe that you will lose nothing by downloading a trial and seeing what works for you, although at times some of the ways to get programs to run may be a little fiddly.
If you have any more questions, I will monitor this thread; or you can send email.

  • Has Anyone tried running Windows Apps on Tiger/Leopard using Crossover?

    Hi,
I had heard that you can run some Windows applications using a program called Crossover.
    Has anyone tried Crossover?
I need to run Qimage on my MacPro

It does work, but it can only run programs that have been converted for use with CrossOver. You need to check their site information on whether the program you want to use is available in converted form.
CrossOver hasn't been verified for 10.5.2, although it is certified for 10.5.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion.
Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • Has anyone tried pre-compression to improve image quality?

I am having a hard time creating a usable disk image in iDVD from my 1 hr 45 min FCE movie. Portions of the video are extremely pixelated, usually the grainier, lo-light clips.
Since I don't have Compressor or DVD Studio Pro to use to get more control over the compression, I considered trying to "pre-compress" my video by exporting the entire master sequence using Quicktime conversion to an Mpeg4 format and playing with the data rate so that it would be well under the 4 GB limit of a DVD5. Then I was going to re-import the Mpeg4 into a new FCE sequence, add chapter markers and export again as Quicktime movie into iDVD.
My reasoning is that iDVD will no longer have to compress the file and the pixelization won't be there if it isn't there in the Mpeg4. Has anyone tried anything like this to overcome iDVD's compression and get more control?
If you think I should post over at iDVD forum please let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

What you want to do does not make sense. You are going to ADD more compression
iDVD will compress your video no matter what you do ... it has to, in order to create the MPEG2 that comprises a DVD. iDVD will always do this ... even if you could create your own MPEG2 (which you can't do if you don't have Compressor) it would still try to do that compression ... it is a consumer app designed for ease of use
The more you "step on" your video before it goes to to iDVD the worse it will be.
You are right; you need more control over your MPEG2 compression and you can't tinker with iDVD's compression engine like you could with Compressor
The symptons you describe are not unusual. I fin that anything over 90 minutes in iDVD can give you potential probs. The quality of the original video had to be really, really high ... and doing a double compression ain't gonna help that.
Is it feasible to split the project in half and make two DVDs? If the project is under an hour, you can use iDVD's Best Performance preference which tends to give you a better result.
Remember, iDVD doesn't really care about the "size" of your project, only its length, so tinkering around to reduce the file size won't help you.
It is unfortunate that Compressor is not a standalone program and that DVD Studio Pro is now only included as part of the Final Cut Suite. I suppose you could troll e-Bay to see if there are any older, independent versions of the program still kicking around

  • Has anyone tried home sharing between mac and windows using parallels on the same machine?

I recently purchased a mac, and plan to set up parallels for windows and windows 7 so that I can use the Windows version of Over Drive Media Console from the library and download WMA files in windows (limitation with mac version for wma downloads). I would like to synch to iTunes on the Mac iOS, but will need iTunes available in Windows to transfer the books I download in WMA format from the library to my iphone. Has anyone tried this? Any success or suggestions would be appreciated!

In case anyone is interested, last night I installed Paralells, Windows, Overdrive Media Console on Windows, and then was able to download my book in WMA format. I was hoping parallels would allow me to crossover sync to iTunes on the Mac and have Overdrive recognize that I had iTunes open, but I had to choose Windows or Mac when connecting my phone through the USB and had to choose Windows in order for it to successfully transfer. I was able to get it to work it is now synced to iTunes in Windows. The nice thing was that it pulled in all my music/apps that I had set up in the Mac side, so I didn't have to go through that exercise again. I tested it on my old phone. Now I need to decide if I want to set up my current phone on Windows or Mac, it seems that once synched it only opens the device in windows, I haven't figured out how to force the choice between mac or window again. If I do windows, I can't take advantage of the cloud or iphoto/imovie directly. I'm totally new to mac, but I think I'll have to import my photos manually.

  • Has anyone tried creating a plugin that you can type in a specific word, and if it comes up in the very top of the page (i think its refered to as the header) it closes the page or tab automatically?

Has anyone tried creating a plugin that you can type in a specific word, and if it comes up in the very top of the page (i think its refered to as the header) it closes the page or tab automatically? there is a program called POW! by AnalogX that does this, but its only good for IE. And Im a Firefox man. Can anyone look into this or maybe create a plugin that does what POW! does for IE? I will donate to the creater of a plugin that does that. Im so sick of pop ups that most pop up blockers miss.

The Firefox pop-up blocker is very effective. If you are getting a lot of pop-ups in Firefox, you may have picked up some Malware that is causing those pop-ups.
Install, update, and run these programs in this order. '''''(Not all programs detect the same Malware.)''''' They are all free for personal use, but some have limited functionality in the "free mode" - but those are features you really don't need to find and remove the problem that you have.<br />
''Note: If your Malware infection is bad enough and you are mis-directed to URL's other than what is posted, you may have to use a different PC to download these programs and use a USB stick to transfer them to the afflicted PC.''

  • Has anyone tried running Dragon NaturallySpeaking (for Windows) on Mac Mavericks?

Has anyone tried running Dragon NaturallySpeaking (for Windows) on Mac Mavericks? I have finally given up on Dragon Dictate for Mac, which alas, after years of buying every new updated version, is still exceedingly buggy and does not begin to compare in quality to the PC version. I love my Mac, and don't like my PC at all, but the third-party  voice  dictation software for Mac is so pathetic, that I have wound up dictating on my PC, and then sending it to my Mac: an truly annoying and Baroque process. I was able to train over 120 words in Sanskrit word perfect on Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but on Dragon Dictate for Mac, I can't even get it to train my name. I know this is not an Apple problem, but I'm trying to find a way around by possibly running the DNS version on Windows on my iMac.
I have a hand disability, so I really do need to use voice dictation, both for dictating and navigating on my computer.
If anyone is doing this, are you using Boot Camp, VM fusion, or Parallels? How well does it work? Has anyone discovered anything else I ought to be considering, before giving this a try? I had tried running this on an old on 2008 iMac (with much less power), using Parallels, but it was incredibly slow. Now that I have a much more powerful iMac, I'm wondering whether it would be worth another try. As it will be quite an investment to purchase all this third-party software to get Dragon up and running, I was hoping to get a sense of how well it works, before plunking down the cash. I would be extremely grateful for helpful feedback.

Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Has anyone tried to use the Online Edition of Quickbooks and Tiger?

I work from home as an editor. My employer has just set up payroll using the Online Edition of Quickbooks. When I tried to to login I got this message from Quickbooks:
"For business and tech reasons we designed Online Edition specifically to run on Windows. We do not offer an alternative version at this time. Customers have reported using a PC emulator, such as Microsoft's Virtual PC, to run Online Edition on their Macs. This may decrease application performance in terms of speed. We encourage you to research this approach to see whether it will work for you."
    Has anyone tried this?
Also, they set up Online Edition to run with Internet Explorer. I use Safari.

i donot know the server he used in his example. All you need is to
replace the server deployment descriptors he used to weblogic descriptors. then rebuild. go to admin tool--localhost:7001/console
and login with weblogic as username and password
then on ejb you can then deploy the ejb.read on the console.

Has anyone tried changing the drummer on a drummer part that has already been placed into a track stack?
I find that if I do that, the parts in the stack all get merged together with no way to expand them (ie the triangle you would click on to expand the stack disappears).

Mail Merge in Acrobat 9 Professional?
    Hi, All!
I have been told that I can perform a mail merge similar to MS Word from within Acrobat Pro 9. The main document (with merge type fields) needs to be an Acrobat .pdf. The data source can come from an external file. The key is that the merge is performed in Acrobat, not Word.
I have searched throughout Acrobat Pro 9 but have found no functionality that matches my needs. Can anyone help me with this?

Has anyone tried creating sections in a Crystal Report where analytic comments (or any sort of text) is fed in from a database. I am trying to build a report where users have entered comments (into an Access database) to accompany the charts and graphs on a report.
The main idea is to have these comments auto populate in the report when it is run just like the rest of the data fields.
Does anyone have experience with anything similar to this?

You can insert a section in a group (it will insert below whatever is already there), then drag the field into the report, select can grow, and see what you get.....
