The phone will only show it's location if it is connected to cellular network or Wi-Fi. If those options are switched off, you can't locate the phone.
With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:

Lost Mode locks your screen with a four-digit passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed, and your custom message will continue to display even after the device is erased.
While Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, Lost Mode clearly indicates to anyone who finds your device that it still belongs to you and can’t be reactivated without your password.
To put a device into Lost Mode, sign in to icloud.com/find from a Mac or PC or use the Find My iPhone iOS app.

I really don't think that they have any interest in your data. They most likely plan on wiping the phone in order to sell it.
If they do restore from a backup, they would have to restore in Recovery Mode because it has a passcode on it. But that can't happen anyway because if they synced to a different iTunes library it would not have any of your backups. -
My EHD has been taken - will the person who has it see my stuff?
I had an EHD and it would back up my iMac. Now it is in the possession of someone else. I will try to get it back but, will they be able to connect it to a pc and see everything that was backed up? My iMac is password protected - does that matter? The person who has the EHD does not have an iMac, or any Apple product. Does that make a difference? And if they can see data on it, how much can they see? Can they see my @mac.com email? Can they get a list of all of my Safari bookmarks? Can they see webpages I was on? All my contacts in my address book and all of my iPhotos, my resume, my saved pictures to my desktop? I'm a little freaked out at how vulnerable I am right now. Any insight?
You should assume that all the contents of the drive that were not encrypted are compromised. Typically, that would mean everything except your keychains, which contain, among other things, website passwords. The keychain is protected by your login password. If you chose a strong password, which many people don't, then it would be reasonable to assume that it's safe in the short term, as long as the information isn't duplicated elsewhere on the drive. You should still plan on changing any sensitive passwords that were in the backup.
If you were using FileVault, and you weren't using automatic login, and the backup was created by Time Machine, then the contents of your home folder are as secure as your login password, which again may not be very secure if you chose a weak password. -
Has anyone tried HP's new "E"printers? And more general printer help.
HP has released some new printers that have their own email address, and don't require any special drivers, you just email something to them, and it prints. It sounds like it would be great for linux users, especially since it probably runs linux, but you never know. Some potential issues might be a) file size b) file formats.
I was googling around for a printer that would meed my needs: I need it print AND scan wirelessly without ever interfacing with a proprietary OS . I thought that the e-print concept might be perfect for this. I don't think that these things can send scans to email addresses, but that would be really sweet!
PS Believe me, I've been googling. In fact, hours of googling led me to buy the hp 3050. Someone had managed to get the thing to print wirelessly. Problems with it are a)I can't connect to the ad-hoc network reliably (I think this unit may be defective) and b) It just seems like a hunk of junk to me. I want something nicer.We have here a Brother MFC -8880DN that has replaced a MFC-8860DN - they have been serving our linux-only office for the past 5 years without noticeable hiccups.
The printer works perfectly with cups on our server and scanning over the network is done through FTP or an email: either in PDF or TIFF. I wrote a 20-line bashscript that OCR's a .tiff that is uploaded automatically via FTP to a certain location. The only thing that I have not really tested is the Fax-driver. I should be able to make a Libreoffice-macro to save a letter to a certain location and then fax it automatically via the Brother faxdriver. In a few tests I ran, the driver seemed picky about the PS-format it accepts, but nothing that couldn't be remedied I guess.
There is a wireless model also, so I guess this would deliver everything you need. -
My phone was stolen and I am just curious how this Lost Mode/Activation Lock works! I know they can't get into my phone currently, and it's off. I tracked the location to an apartment complex before they shut it off, but it didn't give the apartment number, I am hoping they turn it on again soon so I can go back and play the noise, however if I can't I am hoping they will be stupid enough to try to bring it into apple and use it or bring it into verizon. Will Apple or Verizon take the phone for me and return it to me or let them walk out with it? Any background information on similar situations or any feedback would be amazing, I feel naked without my phone.
They won't be able to use the phone, and Apple won't be able to reactivate it for them. Only you can unlock the phone, so it's useless to them. I would doubt that Apple would be able to identify and return the phone if they are stupid enough to take it in, but I don't know for certain.

Well, there is an article on MacWorld saying there were a lot of changes and improvements to Disk Utility.... and those have a way of impacting things.
I got surprised to have trouble after 10.6.3 with SuperDuper on two different systems, that I am still scratching my head over, but had to use Carbon Copy Cloner and RESTORE in Disk Utility for now, would crash (sent report to both) as soon as SD began.
TechTool Pro 5 is another that sometimes needs to take a couple weeks to see if they need an update and validate against the final shipped build. -
My phone was stolen, but I had no data left and so can't locate it till the person who has it tries to use the internet. I backed up all my photos on iCloud, and want to get them on my PC. I installed iCloud onto the PC and followed the instructions and still can't find my pictures, says my photostream folder is empty, but it shows on iCloud that i've used most of my storage which is true, so they must be there somewhere?

As far as I know you can't delete the primary email address for an iCloud account. It's assigned when the account is created. But your neighbor wouldn't have been able to get into your iCloud account without your Apple ID and password. Are you sure the account wasn't still on your phone when you gave it to him?
You could migrate a copy of your data to a new iCloud account but I would still be concerned that someone else was using my old account, which presumably still has your data in it.
I'm fairly certain that you're going to have to have iCloud support help you sort this one out as they may have the ability to make changes to an existing account that users can't. Make an appointment with the genius bar at a nearby Apple store and have them take a look at it. If necessary, they should be able to contact iCloud support for you. -

You use Restore to get the latest firmware build, not the Update button. You can only use the Update button, if there is an iOS update, say iOS 5.1.

In this case you would have to reset your new device (Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings) in order to restore it from a backup during the device setup.

I no longer have cell phone service but I still use my iphone every day for apps and imessage. Now someone has my old phone number. It seems that this person does not have a iphone. Everytime one of their friends with an iphone tries to text them the message goes to my iphone. I have tried many things to stop this. I took my old phone number off my apple account and I took out my old sim card. But I still am getting texts from other iphones attempting to reach whom ever has my old phone number. HELP please. This person is very popular, at first it was funny now its annoying. I'm sure the person with my old number is even more upset than I since they are actully paying for service.

Unlink a phone number
To remove a phone number from an Apple ID, sign out of FaceTime and Messages on your iPhone:
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
Settings > FaceTime. Tap your Apple ID, then tap Sign Out.
This should remove your phone number from other devices using the same Apple ID with FaceTime and Messages. If the phone number is still available on other devices after you sign out of FaceTime and iMessage on the iPhone, you may need to sign out of iMessage and FaceTime on all your devices, then sign in to FaceTime and Messages again on devices you want to use.
Note: If you no longer have access to the iPhone that is using the number you want to remove, reset your Apple ID password.

Have 1 POP3 email account I want to work like IMAP email in icloud (keeps my iMac, iPhone, ipad mail in sync). Apple suggested trying creating a new Apple ID just for that POP3 email. Has anyone tried this to see if it works and will delete/update across multiple devises? Would mean keeping up with two Apple ID accounts but only other alternative I know of is paying for monthly service for Microsoft 365.
would I be able to "upload" (not sure how else to say it) my existing folders and subfolders containing all my emails so that they are all available on my new IMAP service, while still being available on my Mac?
Not easily, no. There's no direct transfer option between POP and IMAP, especially across email providers. The best you could do would be to forward all of your emails to your new address, although it's not clear that you need to - dropping your sbcglobal.net account doesn't instantly render all your existing mail void - it'll still be in your Mail client, you can still read it, search it, etc., it just won't be on your provider's server.

MobileMe would be viable, especially if you're interested in synching your various iOS devices. It's not free, of course, unlike Yahoo and Gmail, although you've already discounted them...
I have also toyed with purchasing my own URL, but it's hard to tell from the sites (1and1, Namecheap, etc.) if they come with IMAP email accounts included.
Some registrars offer email hosting bundles with a domain registration. This could be a good way to go. GoDaddy, for example, have a email hosting option for domains you register with them. -
