Has anyone tried other open Operating Systems?

Such as BSD and OpenSolaris? I was wondering how other open OS compare to Linux.

Sadly, I tend to agree with dakor. If you want a reasonable modern desktop, you really want Linux or Windows. The most friendly useable BSD is PC-BSD in my experience which is based upon FreeBSD. FreeBSD in itself is fast and compact but is weighed down by menacing package systems and lack of hardware support. It also can't run VMWare which is a large downer as a server operating system for many. There are alternatives for virtualisation of course, but not so much in the business sector. However, I heartily recommend FreeBSD as a file server if you need one (assuming your RAID cards support it). OpenSolaris, if/when you can get it to install, seems fairly reasonable to begin with, but is decidedly not lightweight, and I found it somewhat sluggish. It feels like glueing a desktop UI onto what is traditionally a server operating sytem. I'm not really sure what it's trying to be anymore. I also question its future somewhat. It's a curiosity for me, but nothing more.
ReactOS is very impressive given what it sets out to do, and actually what it can achieve. Sure, it's trying to be Windows, but even if you don't like Windows, you have to admire the feats they have accomplished to even get this far. At the very least, worth trying in a VM just to see what it can do.
Last I tried Syllable it would not boot at all. This was a couple years ago though.

  • Has anyone had to reinstall operating system to get iChat back? Did it work?

We have a three week old Macbook Pro 13 inch. My son installed the Messages Beta. It deleted iChat and now he can't iChat (video etc.) with far away family members because they have iChat and he has Facetime and Messages. He said that during the download it didn't say that it would replace iChat. He said he found out afterward when he went to connect with family.
I tried using the uninstall option on the menu bar of Messages. The "uninstalling" bar gets halfway across and then it hangs, then stops, and we get an error message saying that the software isn't available at this time. I took it to the Genius Bar; same results.
The 32 bit box in "get info" has been unchecked from the beginning; that doesn't seem to help any uninstall of messagesbeta and reinstall of ichat.
I called Apple Care and the rep said that this is a new issue, and after doing some research he recommended I hold the option key down on restart and do a "reinstall". He said he doesn't know if it will reinstall with Messages or iChat however, so I'm checking in here to see if anyone has tried this successfully before I proceed.
(I'm moving his movies, pics and music to my thumbdrive but I think I'll have to do a back up too to be safe.)
Thanks for sharing any insight you might have.
    Best regards
    Jennifer

    Hi,
    Message Beta is iChat +
Yes it does replace iChat 6 with Mesages which the About button tells you is version 6.1
IN the Message Menu is the Reinstall iChat option (It is supposed to be kept by some people have reported issues with this)
If you had Buddy Lists in iChat then you can have them in Messages and it will video Chat the same way as it always did.
First check the Messages Menu > Preference > Accounts
As well as the Apple ID (iMessage Account) listed at the top you should still see the iChat Buddy List Accounts.
Check in the Account Info tab that the Box that says "Enable this Account" is ticked.
This will log in the accounts (You may here the sounds that were set in the  Alerts part of the Preference for this action but not see the Buddy lists)
Messages by default turns off the window for the Buddy list. Go to the Window Menu and use the keystrokes listed for each Buddy List.
I have been able to Video to iChat 4 and to iChat 5 and have a 3 way Video Chat between all three versions
In Addition to all the iChat stuff Messages will iMessage
When you are in a Chat with these people then the Video icon will launch FaceTime so you can video their Phone or iPad or Touch (Or to FaceTime on a  Mac)
IF you are in a  Chat with a Buddy it will launch the regular Video Chat window.
Most people that have said their computer says it can't find iChat have not really come back with answers to what they have tried.
One method if you have Time Machine Backs up would be to open the Applications window then use Time Machine and go back until ichat was in the Folder and then "restore"
(From your Post I think that this is not an option for you)
Do you have your Install Disk ?
Apple is moving to the method of having a Restore Area actually on the Hard Drive but I have yet to try things that way.

Ask on a Windows forum since that's what you're having a problem with.

  • Has anyone tried running Dragon NaturallySpeaking (for Windows) on Mac Mavericks?

Has anyone tried running Dragon NaturallySpeaking (for Windows) on Mac Mavericks? I have finally given up on Dragon Dictate for Mac, which alas, after years of buying every new updated version, is still exceedingly buggy and does not begin to compare in quality to the PC version. I love my Mac, and don't like my PC at all, but the third-party  voice  dictation software for Mac is so pathetic, that I have wound up dictating on my PC, and then sending it to my Mac: an truly annoying and Baroque process. I was able to train over 120 words in Sanskrit word perfect on Dragon NaturallySpeaking, but on Dragon Dictate for Mac, I can't even get it to train my name. I know this is not an Apple problem, but I'm trying to find a way around by possibly running the DNS version on Windows on my iMac.
I have a hand disability, so I really do need to use voice dictation, both for dictating and navigating on my computer.
If anyone is doing this, are you using Boot Camp, VM fusion, or Parallels? How well does it work? Has anyone discovered anything else I ought to be considering, before giving this a try? I had tried running this on an old on 2008 iMac (with much less power), using Parallels, but it was incredibly slow. Now that I have a much more powerful iMac, I'm wondering whether it would be worth another try. As it will be quite an investment to purchase all this third-party software to get Dragon up and running, I was hoping to get a sense of how well it works, before plunking down the cash. I would be extremely grateful for helpful feedback.

You cannot run a Windows application on a Mac unless you run Windows on the Mac.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Has Anyone tried running Windows Apps on Tiger/Leopard using Crossover?

    Hi,
I had heard that you can run some Windows applications using a program called Crossover.
    Has anyone tried Crossover?
I need to run Qimage on my MacPro

It does work, but it can only run programs that have been converted for use with CrossOver. You need to check their site information on whether the program you want to use is available in converted form.
CrossOver hasn't been verified for 10.5.2, although it is certified for 10.5.

    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • Clicking links tries to open Opera as my browser

Any link in mail tries to open Opera. I've never used Opera, and of course it comes up with a "Opera has crashed" with "ignore" or "report".
I can't find a place anywhere in System Prefs or Mail prefs to set my default browser - Firefox has been set as the default from inside Firefox prefs, but this seems to have no affect on Mail at all.
    Help?

change the default browser in safari (not Mail) preferences->general.

  • Has anyone tried home sharing between mac and windows using parallels on the same machine?

I recently purchased a mac, and plan to set up parallels for windows and windows 7 so that I can use the Windows version of Over Drive Media Console from the library and download WMA files in windows (limitation with mac version for wma downloads). I would like to synch to iTunes on the Mac iOS, but will need iTunes available in Windows to transfer the books I download in WMA format from the library to my iphone. Has anyone tried this? Any success or suggestions would be appreciated!

In case anyone is interested, last night I installed Paralells, Windows, Overdrive Media Console on Windows, and then was able to download my book in WMA format. I was hoping parallels would allow me to crossover sync to iTunes on the Mac and have Overdrive recognize that I had iTunes open, but I had to choose Windows or Mac when connecting my phone through the USB and had to choose Windows in order for it to successfully transfer. I was able to get it to work it is now synced to iTunes in Windows. The nice thing was that it pulled in all my music/apps that I had set up in the Mac side, so I didn't have to go through that exercise again. I tested it on my old phone. Now I need to decide if I want to set up my current phone on Windows or Mac, it seems that once synched it only opens the device in windows, I haven't figured out how to force the choice between mac or window again. If I do windows, I can't take advantage of the cloud or iphoto/imovie directly. I'm totally new to mac, but I think I'll have to import my photos manually.

  • Has anyone tried to extend Spatial with a 3D primitive?

Has anyone tried to extend Spatial with a 3D primitive that for example can model buildings and tunnels? I am trying to add the polyhedron primitive next to the existing point, line, polygon model. I just want to hear some tips or ideas...

The plan is to make a new GType and new stored functions that recognize this GType.
A polyhedron could be of type 3008,3D and 8=polyhedron(=new). The elem_info
and ordinates contain multiple planes. Self-created stored functions would be
able to recognize this GType, e.g. area3D should give the sum of the areas of all the
faces of the polyhedron and should also work on Gtype=3003 and give the real area
of a 3D polygon instead of the projection.I wouldn't suggest this methodology if you are considering using any spatial indexing or
    functions with your data.
There is a mechanism Oracle Spatial has for defining custom datatypes. It should only
be used with custom apps, i.e. it won't be usable in the context of applications that know
    about Oracle Spatial data types.
The mechanism allows you to define you own element using an element type of 0, and using
the interpretation to define what you are looking at. You would also include an a supported
element type that approximates your geometry, and that element is the one that is indexed,
and the gtype entered is associated with that geometry. Your private functions could access
the 3d geometry when required. For instance, you want to have a 3d cube. It might look like this:
    sdo_gtype=3002
    sdo_elem_info=(1,2,1, 7,0,1, 22,0,2 etc.
    sdo_ordinates=(0,0,0,2,2,2, 0,0,0,2,0,0,2,2,0,0,2,0,0,0,0, 2,0,0,2,0,2,2,2,2,2,2,0,2,0,0, etc
the 1,2,1 in the elem info array corresponds to a 3d line string that when indexed with a minimum bounding
volume encloses the 3d cube. The 0,0,0 and 2,2,2 in the ordinate array stored as the line string when indexed
include the bounds of the cube. Next in the elem info array are 7,0,1. The 7 means offst 7 in the ordinate array
and in this example is fixed. Next the 0 tells Oracle Spatial to ignore this element. The interpretation of 1 you define,
the number could be anything. Since it is my example, I'll say the 1 means this is the definition of the first face in the
x,y plane (i.e. the front face of the cube which faces me). I've set the ordinate array with the coordinates of that face.
Next in elem info comes 22,0,2 which is starting at offset 22 there is another element that Oracle spatial should ignore
(element type 0), and next comes 2, which might mean this is the second face definition, that I've defined as the right
    hand side y,z plane.
    etc.
The meaning of the interpretation value is only limited by your imagination.
Note while you can index three dimensions if you want, the only spatial functionality that supports 3d is a spatial
index and a filter query, and some lrs functions. You will not be able to run any operator except for SDO_FILTER if you
have a 3d index, and all spatial functions will only work on 2d.
Do not define your own gtype and expect to use spatial. it will not work.

  • Has anyone tried to pack CPAN modules

    i wanted to build yeemp

    sarah31 wrote:
according to apeiro these files should not be installed. i believe they are just database module that cpan uses. there fore they are pointless in an arch package. perl packages can be alot more detailed than the one you post here. many do not have an easy ./configure&&make&&make install. often doing the make install part wil create an empty package as the files go directly to your computer.
    just execute caution when building.
thanx, i will remove this file from the packages that i build from cpan, ok

  • Has anyone tried a 4GB HDD in a Mid 2010 Mac Pro?

Has anyone tried a 4GB HDD in a Mid 2010 Mac Pro? I've read that you could go as high as 3GB with no problems although not supported. With the prices of HDD's dropping, I'd like to add more storage to my system, either internally of externally, but I'd like to get a couple of 4GB drives, and was wondering if anyone has used that combination with a Mid 2010 Mac Pro 8 core.

Drives as large as 16TB are directly supported in Mac OS X and behave well when formatted with GUID partition Table -- the default after 10.4.4.
There is a Bug in the Erase function in Disk Utility from 10.8.4, that is unresolved at this writing. Drives over 2.2TB, once erased with this software as an Internal Drive, the drive cannot be further partitioned or erased by that same software. A fix in 10.9.3 or later is anticipated, but not guaranteed. Older versions work fine. External enclosures with Large Drive support work fine.
Western Digital in particular (and others may soon follow) has also shortened the depth of the mounting holes on certain large drives -- the holes adjacent to the platters -- to allow for the addition of an extra platter on certain large drives. A washer may be required to reduce the effective length the drive mounting screw penetrates into the drive.

I saw the set hibernet mode to 0 trick and it failed.  Guess I can try 3 because reinstalling OS X did nothing but cost me another few hours and a little faith in Apple.  Getting annoyed as I see how many people complain of the identical issue and the fixes are variable and random.  Suggests to me that it is a major design flaw in the hardware and Apple got too cute with the just works idea and didn't put a damned power button on the display so there is no manual way to do it and no 'insert a pin here' type trick to reset the thing.
Asking for a refund tomorrow.  Past the 14 days so maybe they'll say no but if so then every time this happens I will swap it out.  At least then I know it is a three hour fix and as I was working on this for hours today it occurred to me that if the trick is to do 57 different things and maybe one will work then that is not why I made the switch to Apple.  I could plug everything in on my PC and it all 'just worked'.
Really poor customer service - the support folks are very nice and I am sure they know that this is a systemic issue but aren't allowed to say so.  Feeling pretty stupid for going on faith right about now.

  • Has Anyone tried to use DDE through Applets

I would like to update a client side opened Excel file via the web using DDE ( Windows protocol used to cut and paste between apps ) and an applet.
I guess that the level of security of the sand-box will limit the interaction with the excel application unless the applet jar is signed and certified.
Has anyone tried to develop such application ?
I didnt go through all the DDE technology yet and I am just wondering if there are some great difficulties to overcome.
Any "difficult to find" hints are welcome

Has anyone tried DisKWarrior V4.2 with Snow Leopard V10.6.3? Does it work?

Well, there is an article on MacWorld saying there were a lot of changes and improvements to Disk Utility.... and those have a way of impacting things.
I got surprised to have trouble after 10.6.3 with SuperDuper on two different systems, that I am still scratching my head over, but had to use Carbon Copy Cloner and RESTORE in Disk Utility for now, would crash (sent report to both) as soon as SD began.
TechTool Pro 5 is another that sometimes needs to take a couple weeks to see if they need an update and validate against the final shipped build.
