Has anyone tried to build a better blog on BC using WebApps only?

In the past I have considered trying to get around some of the limitations of the BC blog system by using WebApps but felt wasn't really possible without a lot of hacks and work-arounds.
But now we have some recent upgrades to BC that have me thinking about it again. Now we have modules-within-modules and, more recently, custom template paths within modules.
Has anyone else ever tried in the past? Is anyone thinking about doing it now with these upgrades? I have had customers in the past come to me with wanting to do blogs but their requested functionality was just too far beyond what BC offers in the blog system. I'd like to see what other partners think about this...

Hi there. There are key features to the blog and key lacking features to web apps. The blog is better then people think if you build it up right too.
The new web app engine out next year will allow you to build what you want like a blog.

  • Has anyone tried the Yosemite beta?

Has anyone tried the Yosemite beta?  Or shall I just wait for the official version to come out?

Beta OS software should only be installed on a test machine, NEVER a primary device, and honestly only by someone with a compelling reason (testing, development).
Yes, wait for final version this fall.

  • Has anyone tried pre-compression to improve image quality?

I am having a hard time creating a usable disk image in iDVD from my 1 hr 45 min FCE movie. Portions of the video are extremely pixelated, usually the grainier, lo-light clips.
Since I don't have Compressor or DVD Studio Pro to use to get more control over the compression, I considered trying to "pre-compress" my video by exporting the entire master sequence using Quicktime conversion to an Mpeg4 format and playing with the data rate so that it would be well under the 4 GB limit of a DVD5. Then I was going to re-import the Mpeg4 into a new FCE sequence, add chapter markers and export again as Quicktime movie into iDVD.
My reasoning is that iDVD will no longer have to compress the file and the pixelization won't be there if it isn't there in the Mpeg4. Has anyone tried anything like this to overcome iDVD's compression and get more control?
If you think I should post over at iDVD forum please let me know.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

What you want to do does not make sense. You are going to ADD more compression
iDVD will compress your video no matter what you do ... it has to, in order to create the MPEG2 that comprises a DVD. iDVD will always do this ... even if you could create your own MPEG2 (which you can't do if you don't have Compressor) it would still try to do that compression ... it is a consumer app designed for ease of use
The more you "step on" your video before it goes to to iDVD the worse it will be.
You are right; you need more control over your MPEG2 compression and you can't tinker with iDVD's compression engine like you could with Compressor
The symptons you describe are not unusual. I fin that anything over 90 minutes in iDVD can give you potential probs. The quality of the original video had to be really, really high ... and doing a double compression ain't gonna help that.
Is it feasible to split the project in half and make two DVDs? If the project is under an hour, you can use iDVD's Best Performance preference which tends to give you a better result.
Remember, iDVD doesn't really care about the "size" of your project, only its length, so tinkering around to reduce the file size won't help you.
It is unfortunate that Compressor is not a standalone program and that DVD Studio Pro is now only included as part of the Final Cut Suite. I suppose you could troll e-Bay to see if there are any older, independent versions of the program still kicking around

Has anyone tried creating sections in a Crystal Report where analytic comments (or any sort of text) is fed in from a database. I am trying to build a report where users have entered comments (into an Access database) to accompany the charts and graphs on a report.
The main idea is to have these comments auto populate in the report when it is run just like the rest of the data fields.
Does anyone have experience with anything similar to this?

You can insert a section in a group (it will insert below whatever is already there), then drag the field into the report, select can grow, and see what you get.....

  • Has anyone tried a 3rd party laptop cooling pad?

I have had my macbookpro 2.16 for about 2 1/2 weeks now, temp averages at about 40c during what i normally do, but the base of it is still too hot to comfortablly use on my lap. I have been using a large book as a buffer for the heat, recently I saw some 3rd party cooling pads with fans in them, running of USB power, has anyone tried one?

I use Vantec Lapcool 4. It folds and quite small for transporting (fits nicely into my bag). It uses 2 fans powered either by USB or by AC. Also adds 4 USB ports.
It makes about 10C defference. Since it keeps the case cooler and MBP doesn't build up heat like it used to, so works quite well.
The only con I've found is that the MBP slips a bit on the pad so I bought a package of small, clear, self-adhiesive, non-slip rubber cushions to put on the bottom of the lappad (~$2@Home Depot). Now MBP sits securely without any slippage.

Trying to figure out the best way for my wife and I to share an iPad.  There is a free download called iUsers that seems to have the right functionality, but the user reviews are from mid-2011 when it was still in Beta.

  • Has anyone tried to pack CPAN modules

    i wanted to build yeemp

    sarah31 wrote:
according to apeiro these files should not be installed. i believe they are just database module that cpan uses. there fore they are pointless in an arch package. perl packages can be alot more detailed than the one you post here. many do not have an easy ./configure&&make&&make install. often doing the make install part wil create an empty package as the files go directly to your computer.
    just execute caution when building.
thanx, i will remove this file from the packages that i build from cpan, ok

  • Has anyone tried to send a Flash-app to the App Store?

Has anyone tried to send a Flash-app to the App Store, after the new statement from Apple? If yes, what was the answer back from Apple?
I see that the previous apps made from Flash CS 5 is still up on the App Store. Maybe there is a small hope for Flash developers?

Well, if they accepted a Flash-made app, then I would work more on my iPhone Flash-game before sending it to App Store. I don't think I'm gonna make better graphics etc, if the app only will run on my phone. And I don't think I'm gonna send a 70% done game to the App Store, and if they accept it, then finish it.
So it would be very helpful to hear a "success story".

I see many ads for the dual sim adaptor, also it is being sold on some flights. Has anyone tried one? Instead of putting better cameras on their iPhones, Apple should really concentrate on making a phone with dual sim cards ( without asking exhorbitant prices) which will make travelling so much easier.

  • Has Anyone tried this new plug in WooWave Sync Pro?

    Hi there
Has anyone tried this new plugin Woowave Sync pro?
They claim to offer better results than you can get with the built in synchronizing engine.
I downloaded the trial but can't figure out how to enable it in fcp.
I got this crappy footage.. hours of it and I really need something to sort it out , hate manual syncing
fcp tries and does some of it, but I got hours left unsynced.

there are four episodes from MacBreak Studio avail for free, which explains MultiCam in FCPX

    http://youtu.be/qKhmZbVgywk
    http://youtu.be/eeQzOycTlOU
    http://youtu.be/RS5Ct3I8Yrs
… in there, you'll find some not-so-known 'tricks' to fasten the process of synching, such as using Markers (not 'on beat' just 'approx').
I tried with my multicam soccer-recordings = no music (aside the referee's whistle ), and FCPX managed indeed to synch this stuff - impressive!

  • Has anyone tried DisKWarrior V4.2 with Snow Leopard V10.6.3?  Does it work?

Has anyone tried DisKWarrior V4.2 with Snow Leopard V10.6.3? Does it work?

Well, there is an article on MacWorld saying there were a lot of changes and improvements to Disk Utility.... and those have a way of impacting things.
I got surprised to have trouble after 10.6.3 with SuperDuper on two different systems, that I am still scratching my head over, but had to use Carbon Copy Cloner and RESTORE in Disk Utility for now, would crash (sent report to both) as soon as SD began.
TechTool Pro 5 is another that sometimes needs to take a couple weeks to see if they need an update and validate against the final shipped build.

  • Has anyone tried the new MS Oracle DataProvider ?

    Hi all.
Has anyone tried the Microsoft issued Oracle .Net data provider? I am not fond of switching horses in midstream (have been struggling with ODP for a few weeks). I do not like the ODP for these reasons...
    1) Documentation is really non-existant/useless especially where hueristics and 'gotchas' are concerned
    2) it is a HUGE install (why I have no idea)
    3) some things simply do not work (like my recent rants on trying to return varchar2's from stored procs and functions).
Is the MS any better ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    1) There is a pdf doc and integrated help which comes with the ODP.NET. There are a few gotchas which could cause some hair-pulling moments. Sometimes it helps to read the same doc several times to really know what to do.
But instead of wasting time reading the doc, the samples cover most of the typical cases. (i think it includes your varchar2 output bind case).
    2) The huge install is due to Oracle Client 9. The provider needs several dlls beyond Oracle.DataAccess.dll and OraOps9.dll. There are some other oracle standard dependencies also. MS provider for oracle will have the same issue (I think they need oracle client install also).
There a few post where the `Instant client install` is going to solve that.
But the thin client (like JDBC thin driver for oracle) is still (IMHO) the best solution for the huge install problem.
    3) See my reply in the other post. (try the sample also)
Finally, which some other posters have mentioned before: Good luck looking for help for MS's provider when you are stuck.

  • Has Anyone tried running Windows Apps on Tiger/Leopard using Crossover?

    Hi,
I had heard that you can run some Windows applications using a program called Crossover.
    Has anyone tried Crossover?
I need to run Qimage on my MacPro

It does work, but it can only run programs that have been converted for use with CrossOver. You need to check their site information on whether the program you want to use is available in converted form.
CrossOver hasn't been verified for 10.5.2, although it is certified for 10.5.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak 2 or Vista. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, or Vista Ultimate. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system.
See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion.
Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • Has anyone tried to use the Online Edition of Quickbooks and Tiger?

I work from home as an editor. My employer has just set up payroll using the Online Edition of Quickbooks. When I tried to to login I got this message from Quickbooks:
"For business and tech reasons we designed Online Edition specifically to run on Windows. We do not offer an alternative version at this time. Customers have reported using a PC emulator, such as Microsoft's Virtual PC, to run Online Edition on their Macs. This may decrease application performance in terms of speed. We encourage you to research this approach to see whether it will work for you."
    Has anyone tried this?
Also, they set up Online Edition to run with Internet Explorer. I use Safari.

i donot know the server he used in his example. All you need is to
replace the server deployment descriptors he used to weblogic descriptors. then rebuild. go to admin tool--localhost:7001/console
and login with weblogic as username and password
then on ejb you can then deploy the ejb.read on the console.

Has anyone tried changing the drummer on a drummer part that has already been placed into a track stack?
I find that if I do that, the parts in the stack all get merged together with no way to expand them (ie the triangle you would click on to expand the stack disappears).
