Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with 8800GT?

Has anyone used Aperture 2.0 with the new 8800GT? I'm about to order a new Mac Pro and wonder if Aperture will get a speed boost with the 8800GT over the HD 2600XT. I've read many times that Aperture is very GPU dependent, but then I've also read, on Barefeats.com for example, that the graphics card really doesn't do that much of a difference after all.
For me, on my dual 2.0 G5 with 4.5GB and a X800XT, what's been most annoying with Aperture 1.5 has been the slow load times for raw images (15-20MB). But now with the quick preview mode in Aperture 2.0, that really isn't an issue any more.
Is the 8800GT worth waiting for, or should I just get the Mac Pro now with the HD 2600XT?

Hi Don
I'm using Aperture 2.0 with the 8800GT. My system is the new MacPro 8 core 2.8GH with 10GB RAM. I'm shooting Nikon D3 lossless compressed RAW files. Approximately 12-14MB each.
I do not need to use the quick preview mode. Images open instantaneously,either fit to screen or 100%. All the image adjustments are shown with no time lag. My D2X uncompressed raw files,19MB, display in approximately one second with quick preview turned off.
I'm no MAC hardware expert so I don't know how much the speed is the result of the 8800GT but I'm just one happy camper.
Hope this helps
John Blake

  • Has anyone used Aperture with Bitcasa?

    I've got a rather large libary in iPhoto, on an external disk. I'd like to move it somewhere offsite.. like Bitcasa or something equivalent, and move to Aperture to manage it.
    Has anyone done this?  Results?
    Thanks.

    I know this is a couple of months old, however I figured that I'd throw my 2 cents in here.
    I don't store my Aperture library on Bitcasa for the very reasons stated here, however, I do manage it a bit by using externally referenced files.
    My primary back up is Time Machine, and my secondary backup is Bitcasa, where I sync/back up Documents, Music, Photos, etc.
    To keep the Aperture library to a manageable size, I use reference files.  When I import Raw image files, they're stored in the Aperture Library.  That gets backed up to Time Machine and Bitcasa during regular backups.  Each Quarter, I move the photo files to an external hard drive.  The metadata is still in the library, and I'm able to do searches, etc.  Once that's done, I burn the referenced images to DVD.  If the external drive goes bad, I've got the DVDs to at least do restores.
    My hope is to experiment with Bitcasa to see if I can migrate that external drive, then have Aperture look there for the referenced files.

  • Has anyone used Toast 7.02 with Dual Layer media?

    I bought a three-pack of Verbatim +R double layer discs just to experiment with (this is my first Mac with a DL burner). I've had some problems with Toast simply not responding but other than that occasional problem I've been able to burn Sony DVDs at 8x.
    I'd like to try to burn one of the dual layers but I don't know if I should start with Toast or just create a burn folder or just let the OS do its thing or what.
    Has anyone had experience with DL disks and Toast? The drive in my Intel iMac is a "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846" (I've heard that some iMacs have different mechanisms?)

    Thanks - I'm going to give it a go today. Just from the general impression I have from numerous conversations and lurking around here and other sites there seems to be a growing consensus that Verbatim DVD media is the best (and possibly CD media as well). I usually tend to simply buy whatever is on sell in the week when I'm running low and Sony media has done well while with Maxell (usually the brand on sale!) I usually find a few clunkers in a spool (mind you this was with my MDD G4,and I had both slots tricked out with Pioneer 106's).
    I'm going to go web crawling later today, too, to see what the best pricing is for Verbatim DL's - I paid $23 at Office Depot for three in jewel cases but it was the only DL packaging they had and I'm sure prices have come down! (One would think!)
    I've been using 7.02 since its release in November (?) but, with Toast, I always make certain not to trash my old app so that I'll not need to fish out the CD should new versions emit flying insects. I DO wish Roxio would release Toast as a Universal app - and soon! I also may try going back to 7.01 to see if that might 'fix' the occasional freeze I'm getting.
    Thanks so much for letting me know about your success with Toast and Verbatim +R DL media - I am almost borderline OCD about back-ups and the more I can fit on a single disc the merrier I will be!

  • Has anyone used a MacBook Air with a TV as a monitor?

    Wondering if anyone can advise on experience with using a tv as a monitor? I don't believe Mac make just a monitor for this purpose do they?

    it's ok, highly pixelated, meaning you will see pixels. I would say its great to watch videos, but any reading or such will be displeasing. Really depends on the pixels per inch of your TV also. But, I would stick with nothing more than 27" for reading or anything text based.

  • Has anyone used a NI 9134 with DasyLab 13

    I am consdiering purchasing a NI 9134 for in vehicle data logging. I would like to run it using DasyLab 13.
    Has anyone tried this?
    There's never time to do it right, but there's always time to do it over!

    Devon,
    I think that it's pretty reasonable to ask about NI hardware support by NI software. That's one of the goals of this board.
    Will DASYLab run on a cDAQ-9134?  Has anyone done it? Can anyone who has one try it?

  • Has anyone used this cool WebCam with a Mac yet?

    i'm in the market for a webcam for my new mac pro. i'm looking for the very best one out there. i ran into this WebCam called "aGent V4 HD". It looks awesome! Its a 3MP HD WebCam that comes with a desk mount and LCD mount. But its sold out of Australia. I was wondering if anyone has used it with osx 10.5.6.
    here's a link:
    http://agent.liquiddigital.com.au/index.htm

    I've just taken delivery of one of these and have to say that, a few glitches aside, I'm pretty impressed. It looks quite sexy and gives a great quality picture that has been commented on by all Skype correspondents who hitherto were used to my looking like a bowl of porridge.
    It comes with 3 useful mounting devices including a great grappling hook looking thing which will hang on top of my 30" cinema display but I actually prefer to have it on the floor stand at head height otherwise the angle is a bit high from all the way up there.
    The only disappointment for me is that I cannot seem to get the internal mic working. Fortunately it does come with a clip on mic which does work when plugged in via the USB gizmo but the built in cam mic just won't play for me.
    I wonder if I'm missing something because I have an older webcam with a built in mic which again I have never had any joy with.
    Any useful suggestions in this point gratefully received!

  • Has anyone used a canon zr850 with FCEHD?

    I am thinking about buying a Canon zr850. Does anyone here have one? How campatible is it with FCHD? Any tips on Camera's?

    The ZR850 will work with FCE. You should look for camcorders that -
    - record to DV and/or HDV
    - use tapes
    - have Firewire output
    The ZR850 has all three.
    However, it does not have an external mic input, which you will quickly find limiting unless all you're filming is 'kids in your backyard.' The ZR800 has an external mic input.

  • Has anyone used Lookout 4.5 with Motorola MOSCAD?

    If so, please send me an e-mail at [email protected] My question is, Can I use the ModbusMOSCAD driver to talk directly to a RTU in the field via radio without using a FIU or do I have to use and FIU and talk modbus to the FIU and let the FIU gather the info from the field?

    Here's what the Lookout online help says:
    The ModbusMOSCAD object class works with Motorola MOSCAD PLCs and RTUs. It also uses the Modbus Serial (ASCII or RTU) or Modbus Plus communication protocol, but its data members reflect the address of Motorola MOSCAD devices.
    It looks like you should be fine using the modbusMOSCAD object in Lookout

  • Has anyone used an XML payload with AQ on 9i?

    No problems with Raw types but can't find any examples of sending and XML doc as the payload. Getting the following error from the snippet I have included.
    oracle.AQ.AQException: JMS-195: Invalid object type: object must implement CustomDatum/ORAData or SQLData interface
    The queue payload is defined as an XMLType.
    /* Creating a message to contain raw payload: */
    message = queue.createMessage();
    /* Get handle to the ObjectPayload object and populate it with data: */
    Document doc = DOMBuilder.buildIt();
    obj_payload = message.getObjectPayload();
    obj_payload.setPayloadData(doc);
    /* Creating a AQEnqueueOption object with default options: */
    enq_option = new AQEnqueueOption();
    /* Enqueue the message: */
    queue.enqueue(enq_option, message);
    System.out.println("Successful enqueue");

    Which version are you using? I also had problems with XML as the payload with 9i Rel. 1. I upgraded to Rel. 2 and it works o.k.

    Let me say that I'm a newbie using statistical functions and calculations.....
    For the calculation of Chi-square I have the followind input variables:
    - measured values

    I just find the section out for you about remote control of your
    camera:
    1.7.1 Remote Control.
    Redlake Imaging also supplies the Serial1 program that enables a
    computer to control the
    MotionScope system from a remote location through the serial port.
    Refer to Manual Addendum
    9400-0014 for detai
    ls of the Serial1 program and how to control the
    MotionScope system from a
    remote computer using a standard communications program.
    So you need to find the serial command (for RS232) in manual addendum
    9400-0014. I couldn't find it in website maybe I did not search
    throughly, but you may have it if you own the camera. And these
    commands are just for controlling the camera system, not grabbing the
    image, so you may need a frame grabber to get the image into your
    computer and do the further processing.

    It looks like the Redlake VIs from ImageMill allow you to write serial commands to your camera. In LabVIEW, you should be able to write your own serial commands using the Serial Read/Write examples that ship with LabVIEW.
    I'm curios exactly which Redlake digital camera you have. Redlake cameras are often found under the names Roper (their parent company) or Kodak. I suggest going to www.ni.com/cameras to see if there is a camera file written for your specific camera. If not, please go to www.ni.com/ask to contact an applications engineer.
