Has anyone used dual layer DVDs? It took 4.5hrs to copy A 5.3GB movie!

I always thought it would be nearly impossible to fill up an entire DVD with one project, but when I went to copy to a regular DVD my project was .6GB too big....so I went out and bought some Memorex dual layer discs (which, btw are like 10 times more expensive). I put the dvd in and waited for it to burn....and waited....and waited. 4 1/2 hrs later it was done. I tried to play it on my $50 DVD player and it kept making noise and skipping. I don't know why this happened, but I'm certainly not happy. Rather than screw around with these dual layers again I'd love to simply fit my project onto a normal blank DVD. so, is it possible to make a 5.3GB project a 4.7GB project without deleting anything?

i'll try to answer everyone's questions and clarify any confusion.
first off: I'm doing this for local cable access television. they wanted me to do something educational and at the same time entertaining that that could kill an 1+. since I'm an art historian I decided to do artists work throughout a particular period accompanied by music from when the works were created. so, for this project 'Roy Lichtenstein: Works of the 1960s' I have over 150 images accompanied by 30+ songs. each image has all the info displayed (which gets 1/2 cut off when i play it on the tv) and fades and transitions. When you're watching it, it's surprisingly relaxing and the time goes by much faster than you'd think (imagine one of those music radio channels on your tv, just with interesting images).
now that you know what I'm doing...
in iMovie the project takes up 20+gb as I mentioned.
I use iDVD but don't really know what I'm doing so when I say it's 5.3GB, I mean, when I look in iDVD at what percentage of space is available on a normal 4.7GB cd it says the project is 5.3GB, or too big to fit on a single layer DVD. I'll have to go back and look at my settings, but I'm pretty sure all my settings in iDVD are 'ok' as I've never had a problem burning before....although I find it strange how long it always takes. Is 1hr+ for a 6GB project to burn normal? and is 4.5hrs normal for this project (20GB) on a dual-layer disc?
so, all that being said, I'd still like to fit my whole project one one single layer DVD because I tried another double layer and had the same fate (even on the computer it just doesn't seem to be working correctly...it may be the memorex dvds which i've read are ****). any more insight would be great.

Using Dual Layer DVD with iDVD

I have a 2 hour movie that I have imported into iDVD. I put in a dual layer DVD-R, but iDVD insists that my two hour movie can fit on a single layer DVD-R. Yes, I'm sure it can crunch the heck out of it, but I want the quality to be high--THAT is why I BOUGHT a dual layer support drive!
Is there any way I can tell iDVD to not crunch it down to 4.5 Gigs, but to just 9 Gigs?

Hey, you used the word "experiment" twice in the same forum which gets you twenty points but you lose 10 points since it was for the same experiment.
I get twenty (40-20) just for writing this response. Points are redeemable at the nearest refrigerator for hoppy beverages providing that you speak nicely to the member of the household that stocks said items, (or you can play back audio of yourself speaking compliments, but it must be recorded in 16 bit audio, as 12 bit audio will only buy you grief).

Help with burning large project on dual layer DVD

Hi need help please.
I am busy with a SD 16x9 project 215 minutes long so I am trying to use dual layer DVD's. The project has a serious menu setup (well I think so), it starts with a intro and go's into the main menu with sub menu's and so on. my problems is the following:
if I burn a image all works well if I burn a disc from the image or using encore the menu once using a DVD player is very slow (the last half of the links on the time line) and some links get mixed up (if I press play dvd on the 3rd sub menu it somtimes starts in the correct place and somtimes it starts one link later).
is this caused by the break in the layer and what can I do to correct it or to get it better.

Are you using any motion menus? Have you exceeded the 1 gig limit for menus etc?
I assumed 16:9 and forgot to look before I started posting: it does not look like it, but be sure you don't have more than 18 buttons per menu (if it is 16:9).
With lots of short clips, break position should not be an issue. You can export to a folder and use imgburn which gives more control over layer breaks.
Even though complex, it all looks straight forward, and, even though I can't see the image detail, it looks okay. The most likely issue in such a project is that Encore got lost as you made changes/corrections. Sometimes they can be fixed. Other times, the solution is a do over. Newer versions for Encore appear more robust (fewer problems and more likely to fix problems), but no versions appear to be free of such issues.

Troubleshooting Inability to Burn Dual-Layer DVDs

I have a Sony DRU-820A DVD burner, and which has stopped burning dual-layer DVDs—single-layer DVDs continue to burn successfully. I've tried using both the Finder and Toast 8 (which have both worked previously), but now the burn fails while the drive is filling the cache. I've attached the drive to another computer, and it works fine. I've also tried creating a new account on the computer and burning from it, but that fails, too. The only change I made to my system between when the drive was functioning and now was the installation of the driver for my printer. Unfortunately, I don't know what was installed in order to remove it an determine if that's the issue. However, the same drivers are also installed on the second computer I used to successfully test the DVD burner. I'd appreciate any advice regarding the best way to troubleshoot and resolve this issue. Thanks.

So are you saying that after you stopped being able to burn dual layer in the one computer, moving the drive to another computer enabled you to burn to the same dual layer discs?
Dual layer media can age pretty quickly if isn't one of the brands known to be high quality according to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia/
Or if it isn't properly stored in jewelcases, or comes on spindles, or is written on, or labelled.

IDVD and Dual Layer DVDs

I've been perusing the forum and see a lot of questions about this but not a lot of good answers.
We have a G5 Mac, with a SuperDrive, OS X 4.11 and iDVD 5.0.1. My wife does a lot of photo/video work and has done several dual layer DVDs with no problems; there's a radio button that lets her select dual layer media.
Last summer the SuperDrive went south and the local Apple dealer replaced it with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-875S. The specs for this drive say it supports writing dual layer media. System Profiler agrees: it supports writing dual layer DVDs.
iDVD doesn't agree: the radio button has disappeared and there is no way to select dual layer media. This is a problem as she has a project sitting here that will not fit on single layer media.
We've tried Patchburn: nothing.
We've tried a forced update for iDVD 5.0.1: nothing.
Don't really want to go to Toast: another set of software for her to learn and me to support.
At this point, it looks like either having the dealer pull this drive and put in a for-real Apple-branded SuperDrive or find a copy of iLife 06 (to get iDVD 6; it looks like '6 is the latest we can go without updating the OS as well). Cost is about the same either way but I'd rather not pay it if I can avoid it.
I'm looking for other suggestions or ideas.

I cannot remember the options for iDVD 5 or 6. I am now using iDVD 08, and it has a dropdown bar in Preferences where one can choose single or dual layer. I would go with iLife 6. See if you can find a disk for sale somewhere ....maybe ebay? If the price is higher than the original cost of $79, or if you cannot locate an iLife 06 disk, email me. I may be able to put you in touch with a place that has a few of them left.

Using an external dual layer DVD burner with iDVD??

I created a 3 hour iDVD file on a dual 2.0 G5 desktop with a dual layer DVD Superdrive. I have since migrated to a MacBook Pro. Now, when I open the iDVD file, it says there is no DL Superdrive on my system and that it will convert the file to single layer or something like that, with the option to cancel or proceed. If I purchase an external DL DVD burner will iDVD detect it and allow me to continue working with the file?? Or do I have to get a whole other Mac with a DL Superdrive (iMac or 17" MBP)?? The error specifically stated 'Superdrive', so I am not sure if just an external DL will work. Thanks for any help.

Has anyone used an app with the new Maverick software to burn iphoto slide shows to DVDs that will play on a standard DVD player? This probably cannot be a demo app in that the amout of photos on the slideshows is large.

Export the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.

I highly recommend DVD+R DL discs by TDK. I use TDK almost exclusively for all my disc burning needs (the other brand I recommend for CD's is Philips, but they are hard to find).

Has anyone used ROXIO TOAST II for setting up intro and burning to DVD. I used to do this in IDVD which has been abandoned in the Maverick

Just to say that that I've tested iDVD on 10.9 and it works for me. It's a discontinued program of course, and hasn't been supported for several years, but I don't think it runs any differently on 10.9 than it did on say, 10.6.
However…can't help you with Toast because I don't use it.

Thanks Kappy, I let it do the scan and when it stopped halfway through and demanded registration I stopped and deleted it. I still have the icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen and don't know how to remove it. If this is not possible I can live with it. I am new to Mac and have trouble divorcing myself from my old PC habits!

I have DVD Studio 1.5.1 and no plans to move to a more recent version. I would like to make dual layer DVDs by purchasing a burner that supports dual layer burning.
What dual layer burners will be recognized and supported by DVD Studio v1.5.1 and Mac OS 9.2.2? I'm using a Powerbook G4 slot loading 800MHZ 15" titanium computer. I am willing to use either an external or internal device.

Dual layer DVD playback problems

Hi Everyone -
I am struggling to make a dual layer DVD that plays back properly. It is for a 76 minute film plus several bonus items.
Total disc space used is 6.4 gig
The film was compressed to a bitrate of 7.1 with a max of 8.3
Audio compressed to 492 kbps (or whatever the 400ish setting is)
Project compiled fine (although I did get a "video bitrate too high" error the first time, then lowered the bitrate.)
Set to
red laser
dual layer
OTP
layer switch set for chapter 12
I've done a few test dual layer discs in the past successfully. What I have done differently with this one is add a lot of bonus material, so there are some 20 or so small video files and a commentary track and two additional audio tracks.
I do not get any error messages while compiling or burning.
The second attempt played back on my mac, at least the main film did. It struggled playing a couple of bonus features and would play others at all.
It loaded on my Mintek portable player, but wouldn't play any video.
It did not load at all on my Cyber Home DVD player or my Panasonic Blu Ray player.
I am wondering if all of these additional small files (none over 2:30 minutes) have caused some clutter that causes the machines to struggle.
I am also wondering if this will be solved by replication, which I am going to do.
I will keep trying though.
If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

You may want to lower your bitrates and audio rates. They seem high, and I am not sure how much the extra material is that you have (in running time), it looks like about 40 to 50 minutes, so total time of about 2 hours or so? The rate may just be too high for the player to handle. Depending on the material (fast action vs seaking engagement for instance) you should be able to get this on a DVD 5.
Make sure you also use DVD+R DL discs, they are the most compatible. I burn a ton of them and do not have issues playing them back. Use them all the time for proofing and testing prior to going to replication.
As to it not starting properly, some players can get a little finicky. A good practice is to start the DVD with 3 -5 seconds of black, usually in VTS 1 (when you look at the video layout). Also, do you have each clip on seperate tracks or one long track.
As to DLTs, replicators are now accepting USB files also with a "Tape Image" layout on them

Dual layer DVD burner any time soon?

I have an old PowerBook 1.33ghz. I'm itching to replace it with a MacBookPro. I upgraded this PowerBook with a dual layer DVD burner, and I use it a lot. I moved to the US from the UK and send many DVD's back to family and friends in the UK. I can't live without the dual layer DVD writer, plus backing up requires less DVD's and hence less space on my shelves.
Anyone here know when Apple will release a model with a dual layer DVD writer? I refuse to buy an external.
This old G4 has better DVD support than Apples flagship portable computer, doesn't seem right does it. I keep thinking I can live without dual layer, but its just such a step back.
Anyone know of when this may change and MacBookPro will get a dual layer burner? I dont know how long I can wait to get my hands on the new MacBookPro . . .

Dual Layer DVD Capacity, and Recommended Media?

Hey All,
Just a few quick questions. What is the formatted storage capacity of a Dual Layer DVD? I know that the listed size is 8.54 GB, but is that what you can actually get on the disc, or is it less than that? I have so much content that I'll need to cut things to make room, so I need to know exactly how much stuff I need to cut.
My second question is if anyone has some recommended dual layer media. I'm looking for whatever will work well with the burners that Apple uses in their Macs, and unfortunately Apple doesn't offer DL DVD's. Thanks!

I usually dont go more than 8.1-8.2 it could take more, but from my experience, if its to full, stuff will freeze on it, Once my audio was un-sync, I toke some off, and it whent find.

Recommendations on Dual Layer DVD Burner Purchase

Anyone have any recommendations on a Dual Layer DVD burner to purchase to replace the old superdrive?

Nope - both formats are for both platforms, but there was a spate of +R players and discs made available on PCs when Apple were only using -R. However, I have two or three PC burners that were -R only (and are now sitting on a shelf somewhere) from those days. The capacity of both is so close as to not be an issue, although +R does hold slightly more data. The gross capacity of a DVD-R is 4.7GB, which is in fact 4.372GB when used in a computer. For DVD+R the gross is 4.73GB which converts to 4.377GB on your computer. I guess for some folk that additional capacity might be necessary, but it isn't really worth worrying too much about, IMO.
Using dual format drives is a good idea, as you can then use either type of disc... however if you read into the background of the formats you'll see that -R is slightly ahead of +R in the compatibility stakes, although more and more players are able to deal with both equally well.
When it comes to burning a DVD in your superdrive, the slower you burn the better the compatibility is likely to be, however some folk report 100% success with fast burns every time (I've had my share of problems with faster burners). As long as you get an Apple compatible drive you should be OK, if faster burning is what you want to do.
Layer break points - on a dual layer disc there comes a point when the laser in the player has to switch from the first to the second layer in order to access the data written there. The point at which this happens is controllable by the DVD author and is called the layer break point. However, on some media (specifically dual layer DVD-R) there is no point in setting this up as the first layer will get written until full, no matter what. There will then be an automatically set break point. When this occurs the change over is flagged as 'seamless' which is intended to make a smooth switch over but there are some players which cannot handle this kind of switch and it needs to be flagged as non-seamless. Other types of media (DVD+R DL) will allow you to set the break point where you want it and will allow you to set it as non-seamless. This helps increase the compatibility of your disc when playing back in set top players.
In DVDSP this means it is probably better to use DVD+R DL media when creating a DL sized project.
