Has apple stopped Raw compatibility updates??

I Just looked at all of the raw updates over the past year.  Shortest time between updates.... 3 weeks,  longest time 9 weeks, average, 6.3 weeks.  Time since last update 10 weeks.
i Have brought this up in other forums and people are saying either Apple is dropping support for iphoto and Aperture and to not expect any further updates.  Others say dont worry Apple is committed to photographers.
THe current evidence is supporting the naysayers.  If they do not update soon.... I can read the handwriting on the wall and its off to LR... but I really hope not.

The subtext in your question is really all about Apple's priorities: how much energy is it putting into meeting the needs of pro and amateur photographers who use cameras that shoot RAW?
I doubt that Apple is too busy to find the time (although they've got a lot of money to count), and even if that were so, it says something about priorities. But there are tons of alternatives; even open source RAW conversion applications like dcraw/RAWTherapee have a more recent list of supported cameras.
But consider RAW support and what it means. Traditionally Apple doesn't try to support tons of different kinds of hardware. If you want your hardware to work with Apple's system it's sorta on you to make it happen. Consider another image input: scanners. Canon has to provide the driver; Apple now bundles those in system upgrades, but I doubt they have someone writing them. It's up to Canon to do that. Most camera manufacturers don't publish specs about their RAW files; much of the work has been done by sorta reverse engineering them. dcraw started doing that a long time ago, and is behind some of the software you see out there today (RAWTherapee is an example). That's not necessarily bad, I guess, since the intial processing of RAW files gives developers reason to say their software (CaptureOne, LR, DxO, etc) does a better job of this than others.
And Apple has more to do than say PhaseOne. Their camera RAW updates also work with the image i/o framework to identify the filetype and make it available to more than Aperture or iPhoto; that's why you can "see" the RAWs in icon views in Finder windows, in QuickLook, and in other applications that rely on Apple for RAW support. So I imagine it's not as easy for them as for one-off application developers. I'd also be curious to know whether the camera manufacturers support Apple's work. Do they give them the specs for the RAWs? There's probably no reason why, in addition, that the manufacturers couldn't make a qlgenerator plugin (for QuickLook) that would make their RAW files visible in the Finder. I have one made by EyeTV, for example.
So while we're all speculating here, I'd say that it's possible that some of this might be down to your camera manufacturer. Love to know if that's true. And maybe the whole system for doing RAW is changing. Perhaps Apple is putting more onus on the camera guys to do the work; can't say I'd blame 'em.
I don't know if it's still true, but some folks have had to use Pacifist to load the RAW support if they didn't have iPhoto or Aperture installed. This led someone to write a qlgenerator for folks with that dilemma (http://rene.rebe.de/2013-08-11/exactimage-quicklook-w-camera-raw-support/). Although it wouldn't do the conversion for you, it might make your currently unsupported RAW files more usuable on your Mac.
While I think Apple whiffed with the whole Aperture thing, and I can see why some are very annoyed with them, it's not like there's a lack of alternatives.

  • Problem with Aperture 2 and Digital Camera Raw Compatability update 3.1

Has anyone using Aperture 2 experienced problems with the Digital Camera Raw Compatability update 3.1. It may be purely coincidence but, since downloading this on March 3, I get the dreaded red screen and unsupported image format on my previously downloaded and edited RAW photos. I use a Pentax k-7 with which, once set up, I have had no problems until now!
Please - any help would be very gratefully received

That probably explains why any checks that your computer did to see if the Camera Raw update was okay to apply didn't stop it. You should probably contact Apple and explain that they broke something that was working fine previously.
A few people have reported backing off Camera Raw 3.1 and going back to Camera Raw 3.0 for now. This note is one of the ones I've found describing how to do that, if you wish to try that. Or, you could head down the path Apple means to lead you on and upgrade to Aperture 3.

  • Uninstalling Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.2 (5.5MB)

I need to uninstall Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 3.2 (5.5MB) file from my computer. Any help as to how I can do that???

    Hi again...
Sorry not got a definitive answer for you, but I see no one else has responded yet... perhaps it cant be done..... I am fairly confident that there's no way you can remove a duff update through Time Machine...
Do you have a vault back up...? Vaults will restore all your images plus all the versions you created and every adjustment you have ever made... in short... everything.... you have ever done in Aperture....
    If not.... ouch...!
You might have to seek help from an Apple genius in your local Apple store...
Hopefully someone here will have an answer for you..
    Hoping..... Gerry...

  • Unable to update to Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.03

This is probably an Apple Update issue, but is anyone else experieincing a greyed out Update button.  I restarted and the update button was available again.  Initieated download, but got no message about installing our any success in updating it, so for now it remains in my update available pane for several days.  Real pain!  Any ideas on how to force or troubleshoot this update issue?  Running Mavericks 10.9.1

What is your Aperture version? Is it compatible with the latest raw support? At least Aperture 9.4.5
Any ideas on how to force or troubleshoot this update issue?
Have you checked, if the update has actually been installed? You can see in the "About" panel the version of raw support that Aperture is using.
If the raw support has not been installed, try to download it from the Support page:
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.03  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1717
Sometimes you can recover unfinished downloads by using the menu item "Store > Check for unfinished downloads" in the App Store menu.

  • Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.03

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.03This update adds RAW image compatibility for additional cameras to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11. Jan 16, 2014
This update adds RAW image compatibility for the following camera to Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11:
    Canon EOS M2
    It also includes fixes that:
Resolve an issue that prevented lens correction from working properly with Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 images
Address a color cast issue on some Olympus OM-D E-M1 images

I think this update has been released quickly to resolve the RX100 and EM-1 issues, which were quite serious for users of those cameras.
We don't really know what Apple is working on, but on past experience there is usually a reason why they take their time. Support for Fuji X100 and X-Trans showed the benefits of this. Ligthrooms support for X100 was incomplete and the initial support for X-Trans was quite woeful. The Fuji forum at DPR had a lot of disapointed users, so while they got support faster, they continued to shoot Raw+JPEG and use the JPEGs. I don't know much about Pentax's JPEG engine though. In contrast, when X-Trans support finally came to Aperture, it made a much better job of retaining detail and reducing the colour bleeds, still not perfect but much better.
So while I understand your frustration, you can perharps take a little comfort in anticipating it will probably be worth the wait.
If I were adding support for the K3, the thing that would trip me up is the switchable AA filter. This essentially means it's going to need different demosaicing parameters based on the AA filter setting. It will be interesting to see if any reports start to appear about how well Lightroom is handling that aspect.

  • Blue Screen of Death After RAW Compatibility Update

My friend updated her 13" Black MacBook yesterday, specifically the "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3". After a reboot, she got the Apple "Blue Screen of Death", with no login window showing. Looking at system.log, there's a section that looks to be the culprit (this began after restarting due to the install of the update):
Nov 7 13:55:29 Philbert /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow[31]: Login Window Application Started

Here are some things I've observed/tried, many from sources via the Internet:
    - I'm able to login in single-user mode
    - I'm not able to login in Safe Mode (hangs on white screen with Apple logo)
    - I've tried booting off the 10.5 install DVD and running Disk Utility - verify/repair disk, this comes back ok. However, if I try to verify/repair permissions, it runs for about 10 - 20 mins then freezes. I let the frozen process run overnight (10-12 hours) and no feedback. I can move the mouse, but I cannot select anything.
    - When the laptop is booted and on the blue screen, I can connect to it via AFP
    - I've tried manually changing the permissions of "/", by doing - chmod 775 /; chmod 1775 /;
    - I've tried removing the com.apple.WindowServer.plist and com.apple.loginscreen.plist files in case they were corrupted by the update
    - I tried running the "installer" command to re-install the update package from the command line. I run it with the "verbose" flags, I get no output and the process hangs.
Since I can connect via AFP I figure I'll be backing the data up and re-installing OS X. Pretty lame though, considering this failure was caused by running a Software Update. Anyone have a last minute suggestion for me before I go down that path?
I have the full system.log if anyone is curious!
    Cheers!

i don't think this is a router issue...i believe it's a hardware issue...this error occured when computer is not getting sufficient memory, drivers are not installed correctly or due to invalid driver installation of any devices installed on the computer...to just isolate the problem try connecting computer directly to the modem and check are you are getting a same error message or not and let me know.

  • Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 and later can not be installed on OSX 10.6.8.

    Hi
I bought a new Canon EOS 5D mark 3 and noticed that my MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.8 can not handle the new raw files.
Searching google shown that I need Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.12 or later.
So I tried with 3.12, 3.13 and 3.14, but all failed during installation with error: "Dieses Update unterstützt nur Aperture 3 und iPhoto 9."
    Hmmm
    Checking iPhoto ...
About IPHOT shows "Iphoto '09 version 8.1.2 (424)"
So I've updated Iphoto with version 9.2.1 (which I found matching my OSX after stepping down from highest version down ..... Apple is here not really supporting users here .......)
Unfortunately this is only an update.
So I need to install first a newer Iphoto version.
Iphoto 11 I can buy in the app store, but I can not install it on OS/X 10.6.8 .....
    Lost!
How do I get my raw files of 5Dm3 visible in OSX 10.6.8 ???????
    Any help welcome
    Thx
    Wolfgang

I maintain up to date my system, yet I have from time to time when I take RAW picture issues in iPhoto not reading them.  Today, looking for another issue I came across this update and I was hopping it would resolve my issues with the RAW photos from my Pentax K-30.
    The error:
    Installer quit unexpectedly.
Click Reopen to open the app again. Click Report to see more detail information and send to Apple.

This laptop cannot be upgraded further without hindering its performance.  Hence, I need to keep the version of iPhoto that I currently have.

Thanks to Bobthefisherman & Turbostar.  Turns out I've got a corrupted disk (which I found out via "verify disk" on Disk Utility First Aid.  Previously, I never thought to verify disk -- only to repair permissions -- so I never knew my HD had been corrupted.
Wasn't able to do a clean install of OSX10.6 because my SuperDrive only sporadically will load discs, so I am taking it to the Apple Store to see if they can do a clean install, and depending upon costs, get the Superdrive replaced.
The HD wasn't partioned by the way.  And I did have just over 40GB of contiguous space.
    Thanks again.

  • Can't install Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.2

Software Update wants to install Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.2, but it always fails, saying: "The update “Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update” can’t be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges. The Installer package has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder."
I've tried doing Repair Permissions in Disk Utility, but this has not helped. I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.5, all other recent updates have gone in fine.

I had the same problem. Deleting the contents of the HD/library/Updates worked.
Never the less I noticed that the permission set was different:
Original permission set: admin R&W, admin R only, everyone R only.
I also followed the Alias and found two files with the same permissions.
Re-downloading (via software update) revealed a new permission set:
(Me) R&W, Admin R&W, everyone Read only
In both the alias and the two files downloaded. Note that (Me) denotes your user with administrator access.
I believe that, since the update was downloaded automatically, the permissions were mismatched and instead of adding a system R&W privileges it added a second Admin Read only permission.
Adding an administrator user with read and write permissions should solve the problem (as long as you authenticate as that particular administrator when prompted for intall authorization).
    Regards, Jaime.

  • Digital camera RAW compatibility Update

What is this update and is it important in the running of my OS?  I'm not sure why I am getting these updates from the AP store but ever since I updated to Yosemite, I've gotten two of these.  Can someone please explain to me what this update actually is?

  • Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.7

Having trouble updating my MacBook.  The network crashed during my latest update, now whenever I try to update, it tells me "The update 'Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update' can't be saved.  A networking error has occurred:  Cannot open file (-3001).  Make sure you can connect to the internet, then try again."  I am connected to the internet as I am posting this from said computer, and continually get the same error message.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

I expect the network error is because it is trying to use old connection data that is no longer relevant so i was looking to remove its reference so it could start afresh. It seems that location is not pertinent.
Good software should be able to recover from this error, but yours seems hung up on its past attempt.
I don't know how you can fix this. Maybe someone else knows. Sorry I could not help.

  • Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.2 - White Balance Temperature

Prior to downloading the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.2 I was importing RAW photos without a problem. Now all my photos are imported with a temperature of 2500K. I have a second computer on which this update hasn't been loaded and photos load with the proper temperature setting. When I load photos in Photoshop the temperature is indicated correctly. My DSLR is a fairly old Canon D60. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can downgrade to 2.1 as described in this post:
    Source:http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8142169#8142169
    Page Title: Apple - Support - Discussions - Can't import Canon RAW's (400D) to ...
    Date: Wednesday, September 24, 2008 7:26:47 PM
This might work (from Clem who figured it out):
Delete the file: System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle then (re)install the previous version.
    Get the previous version here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawcompatibilityupdate21.htm l
    Restart your computer.
Althought the fix was for correcting the problem of not being able to import at all it does give a means of downgrading to 2.1.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I cannot remove it from the updates tab in applications and it is blocking other updates, how can I resolve this?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
