Has EMBED Flash problem in IE caused sites to abandon Flash?

Apparently this problem has been around for a while and
several sites
that used Flash for slideshows on their homepages seem to be
using ajax
now. I didn't realize that there was some eolas patent issue
that
Microsoft activex was violating. I finally found a site that
explained
how to add Flash with a javascript, but am wondering if other
webmasters
just decided to remove their Flash content and used ajax or
something
else? Given that Microsoft is trying to push Silverlight it
appears
suspicious that this embed problem has come up recently. Is
this just
another attempt by Microsoft to include issues in their
products that
interfere with the products of other companies?

Ajax is much easier to update to none Flash Savvy users.
Perhaps going back and
forth to a designer asking him to update a slide show is not
something some like
to do.
I wouldn't assume flash it's going to be abandoned because of
such a minor
issue, in fact I see with the release of Flash 9 player and
now flash 10 and latest
Flash authoring tool out the corner, flash only intensify
it's present online.
Papervision is almost everywhere, Audi A5 - A Rhythm of
Lines, Sony BRAVIA, Canon EOS 400D,
HBO Voyeur, Nike Sweet Spots and lots more. More and more
people are asking specifically
for suites built with this new environment.
Adobe solved the EMBED problem almost as soon as it appeared.
Flash not automatically generates
JS file and your object embed tags accordingly. There is also
very popular swfobject that
most of us use instead of the Adobe's methods...

The embed did not just effected Flash but many other
technologies. On top of it
MS lost rather substantial amount of money in the EMBED
patent case so I wouldn't think
it was to suppress one and promote another product.

  • Youtube and flash games work, but other sites that use flash don't work

    Hi-
    I'm currently using Firefox 18.0.2 on 2 different computers (Both Win7 64 bit), both with flash 11.6.602.168. Both have roughly the same programs installed and the same browser configuration. However, on one machine, flash works only on some sites. For instance, Youtube works perfectly, as do dedicated flash games. However, sites that use embedded flash applications fail to work. For instance, if I visit www.speedtest.net, where the test options normally appear is completely blank. Similarly, other video players fail. For example, videos in www.cbsnews.com play sound, but where the video should be is just white. I've tried completely uninstalling both firefox as well as flash, and installing previous versions, nothing has worked.

    I guess it is a process of elimination, what is different ?
    I would first of all check and experiment with Adobe FlashPlayer protected mode setting.
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Flash#Flash_Player_11.3_Protected_Mode_-_Windows
    Also have you any filtering, adblock or security related programs installed which may block video or scripts. With you-tube check is it actually using Flash player,and not trying to use any HTML5 options so check any options and cookies.

  • Flex Flash Embed Centering Problem

    Hello,
    I'm developing a Flash site (AS3) that has 5 sub pages (e.g.
    loads 5 different SWFs). 3 of those 5 SWFs are Flex apps. When
    loaded, the SWFs are to be centered in the screen. This works for
    the 2 SWFs created in Flash, but when I resize the window, the Flex
    ones jump to the top of the screen, breaking the structure. Not
    sure how to fix this.
    In the Flash site, I added:
    stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT;
    stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
    var myLoader:Loader = new Loader();
    myLoader.load(new URLRequest("NippesKarteApp.swf"));
    mcPanelBkg.addChild(myLoader);
    function resizeHandlerMain(e:Event):void
    mcPanelBkg.x = (mcPanelBkg.stage.stageWidth / 2) -
    (mcPanelBkg.width / 2);
    mcPanelBkg.y = (mcPanelBkg.stage.stageHeight / 2) -
    (mcPanelBkg.height / 2);
    stage.addEventListener(Event.RESIZE, resizeHandlerMain);
    stage.dispatchEvent(new Event(Event.RESIZE))
    What do I need to add to the Flex apps so when loaded into a
    fullbrowser Flash site, they remain centered when the browswer
    resizes? Any help would be much appreciated!

    -Stefan

  • Adobe Flash Player Installer/Uninstaller 11.2.r202 has encountered a problem and needs to close

    Seems that with the last 3 or 4 Flash Player updates, once the update is complete but before the installer actually exits, I get an error message box telling me that "Adobe Flash Player Installer/Uninstaller 11.2.r202 has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.", etc., etc., etc.  I've received this error message numerous times as most of the computers I work on are Windows XP SP3 (all updates) with Internet Explorer 8 as the browser, including my own computer and my wife's.  If I could copy & paste the details, I would.  But the temp file that's supposed to be created for error reporting purposes, isn't, and I'm not going to spend the next half an hour transcribing all the technical details.  I just want you to be aware there's a problem with your installer.       -kd5150-

    I'm sorry you are running into this crash.  To help investigate the problem, we'll need you to do a few things for us.
    First, add the following line to the file mms.cfg (open in Notepad)
    SilentAutoUpdateVerboseLogging=1
    You can find the mms.cfg file here:
    xp, vista, and windows 7 32bit: c:\windows\system32\macromed\flash\mms.cfg
    windows 7 64bit: c:\windows\syswow64\macromed\flash\mms.cfg
    Next, we'll want to get a crash dump so we can see what's going wrong.  You can enable crash logging on Windows Vista or 7 using the following steps:
    Download the following files: Enable Crash Logging.reg and Disable Crash Logging.reg.
    Double-click the Enable Crash Logging.reg file. Click Yes in the Registry Editor dialog.
    Restart your computer.
    Let the updater/installer crash occur
    After the crash, open a file browser window and type the following in the navigation bar:%localappdata%
    Go to the CrashDump folder.
    Select the most recent file that appears with the extension .dmp.
    Double-click the Disable Crash Logging.reg file downloaded in Step 1 and click OK.
    Restart your computer.
    Zip up the .dmp file and mail it (or a dropbox link) to [email protected] with a link to this thread.
    For XP, follow these steps:
    Show hidden files.  For more details, see the instructions for Windows XP.
    Repeat the steps that resulted in the installer crash
    After the crash, open the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson
    Locate the file named with the extension .dmp that corresponds with the correct date and time
    Zip up the .dmp file and mail it (or a dropbox link) to [email protected] with a link to this thread.
    In addition to the .dmp, please post or send me your Flash Installation.log.

  • Adobe Flash Player Update Service 11.3 r300 has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are

    I get following message:
      Adobe® Flash® Player Update Service 11.3 r300 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    How can I solve this?

    People,
    Listen. This service is, has been and seemingly will be: FREE. So while emotions are running on the hot side of the guage, let's remember; it is FREE. Adobe owes no one anything. Now who's to blame, really? We, the people are to blame. Why? Because everyone has been ok with the fact that one company essentially designed and released a technology for streaming from the net. One company. And almost all of us are using this one company's technology to stream; for FREE.
    But now we are not ok with it when, after we are prompted to update, we have the issue of it not working? We all never saw the ridiculously high potential for this one company to screw things up, intentionally or otherwise? What the ramifications, that we are now experiencing, might be? Nah, we just took it for granted that we would continue to be served. Well the serve came, everyone. Mistake or otherwise.
    It's like this country [US], up until four-years ago. Everyone was either running around with snow shovels and hefty garbage bags to gather all the money they were making or sailing the seas of expectation and an, 'I am out there to get mine' attitude, and then the sh*t hits the fan and now people are complaining? About the very system until four years ago was spoon feeding them poolside with mai-tai's? While it was crushing everyone else in the known world?
    No doubt it seems incredulous that a multi-billion dollar company has an IT department that would include in an update, for their own software, that would be inconducive to working. No doubt. But keep in mind: we are all either using browsers by Apple or MS. Anything happens to these browsers, including a virus or anything else that threatens our use of them and...?
    So climb off the haughty, 'I deserve' crap and walk on the solid ground of trying to resolve this issue here at Adobe and around the net. If we were to band together, as the 99%, we could solve this, no problem. But then that holds true with resolving this fictitious economic downturn nonsense, that we solidly take for truth at face value, because our mainstream media says so. But no other species on this rock flying through space would know what the f*ck we were talking about.

    Unchecking auto updates does not stop the message for me.
    Sorry to hear that too.  I actually recommended this to a few friends who were having the same issue, and it worked for them.
    But, I'm wondering....  Have you tried disabling the check for updates settings in both the (Window's Control Panel's) Global settings manager and the (online) Global Notifications Settings panel?  (That's the one on this page -- http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.htm l )  On that page, click on the "Globe with the Check Mark" tab and make sure that the box is blank.
    Hope this helps.

  • I evidently need to install Flash, but having done so, it behaves still as if I didn't.  I have the new i7 iMac (and I see from some other forums that Flash installation has been a problem for some time.

    I evidently need to install Flash, according to everything animated I've tried to view, but efforts to do so have been unsuccessful (or it's installed but not in the right place? )  I see from forums I've visited that this is an ongoing issue with iMacs--I'm surprised since it's a download on Apple that it just doesn't come with the setup...and why is it so troublesome to do?  (Weird for something so basic these days not to come with the newest, fastest, etc. iMac i7...)

    If you are hang issues you can try calling AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support. If they can't figure out the solution you need to contact Adobe, it's their product. Apple has announced they are moving towards HTML5 and away from Flash because it's so antiquated. It is also no-longer pre-installed on OS X so you need to download as you have found out.
    You can try some basic resets to see if you can get it to work. I'd first recommend restarting in Safe Mode to clear some caches. If that doesn't work reset both the SMC and PRAM to see if that helps.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
    Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
