Has My External Drive Been Wiped Out?

So I have a Western Digital external hard drive that I bought in anticipation of the Leopard release in October, 2007. And it's generally worked well, until now. After being away for a few days, I turned on my iMac and the external didn't pop up. So I unplugged it and plugged it in again and after doing this, nothing came up.
Finally, a message comes up, hours later saying that the disk couldn't be initialized and the like and Disk Utility pops up. And on Disk Utility, my external is popped up... yet it shows it has the full amount of space available and that it isn't formatted.
Keep in mind that I'm a musician, I record, produce and actually put all of those files on the external to prevent myself hassle and heartache from the iMac's drive going out.
But now that this has happened... has my external wiped out? You have no idea how much I am praying to hear the words: "No."
Thanks!

First thing to do is reset the USB chip set on the mother board. Unfortunately, when you power down the computer there is always a bit of power still applied to the motherboard to keep things alive and this usually includes powering the ports to do stuff like detect when a device is plugged in or wants to wake up the computer. The downside of this is when a bus/port chipset goes into a weird state, locks up, etc., simply power cycling (shutdown & restart) the computer won't work.
So first thing to try is resetting the chipset and to do this you have to power down the computer and completely unplug the computer from the wall power (unplug the power cord to your Mac). Also unplug everything from the Mac's ports (USB, FW, Ethernet, etc.) to make sure no parasitic power is still there to keep the chipset alive. Now let it sit for a minute (give those big power caps in there time to discharge). Now reattach the keyboard & mouse, plug the power cord back in, & start up the Mac. Now see if your USB ports work any better.
Best of luck!

Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
Here is what I have tried...
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

  • My memory has been wiped out help??????

I forgot my password I typed it in three times wrong and then a few minutes after that by itself all the memory had been wiped out. Please can anyone tell me how to get my memory back??? That would really help.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
BBs are secure devices. When a device lock password is assigned, the user then plays a key role in that security. Forgetting your password means you failed in your role...and the BB dutifully assumed it was no longer in your hands and wiped itself clean. This is exactly as it is supposed to be...it's called WAD -- Working As Designed.
The only hope is if you have previously taken a backup. If you have ever taken a backup on your PC, then find those IPD files and use the most recent one to restore from.

  • All data in iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, iCal, iMovie, etc has been wiped out.

All of the pictures, music, emails, etc has been wiped out in all of our applications. The only thing that wasn't wiped out was our documents. When you click on the applications it goes to what it looks like when you are first setting up your computer. After that, everything is gone. The only thing different we have done with our computer was update Safari. Any idea what happened?

This is a potentially complex issue.
Is this SUP configured to run as IOS native or CatOS Hybrid?
While in ROMMON can you do the 'dev' command and see whad drives are recognized. Then 'dir' the drives that the SUP recognizes.
Can you provide the screen captures as it boots?
You would be bette served by hacing a TAC case.

Though i am still gona try using the same Itunes. Will same Itunes support two apple ids.
That depends on what you mean. If you mean two iTunes Store accounts, no. Only one Apple ID can be logged into the iTunes Store at a time and if automatic download, iTunes Match or re-downloading of content is used the ID can not be changed for 90 days.

So i guess if i solve my goof up on creating different apple IDs and setting her phone as a new one .. according to you that shall do the trick.
But i have a question here in that case what happens to all the applications that have been purchased on my Id ? Wont i be needing them to be purchased/downloaded again in the new id?
If you previously had been using the same Apple ID for iTunes Store purchases for both of you there is no reason to change what you've been doing. If this is your wife's first iPhone, and you want to share the iTunes Store account just don't use the new Apple ID you created. As long as there are no purchases on it there's nothing to worry about.

  • How to recover I photos from hard drive?  I was told by Apple tech to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD, after doing so all of my data has been wiped out.

I had an issue with my Mac and called Apple the tech told me to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD.  I specifically asked if I needed to do a back up before doing so, I was told that it would not be necessary none of my data would be lost.  After installation everything was wiped out.  I am most concerned about retrieving my I photos.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

You did not do a reinstall but rather an Erase and Install. If you don't have a backup, which you should have already had, then you need to see the following:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Library has been wiped out! PLEASE HELP

So, our computer crashed a few weeks ago, therefore I needed to get iTunes set up on this laptop.
I installed everything correctly, then a pop up came up on iTunes saying there was already a library, did I want to change it? Or something like that... I really can't remember what it said, but I clicked yes and now my songs have been wiped from my iPod mini and my iTunes library! Please help somebody!

As long as you have not reloaded much (or any) new information to the iPod, the following links will direct you to software that has a chance of recovering some or all of your iPod’s music files. Most are not shareware or freeware, so you may have to spend a little money.....
This PodSalvage software will only work with Macs running OS X. See the PodSalvage page at SubRosaSoft.com: http://www.subrosasoft.com/MacSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=2
This link will give you several 'Erased iPod' recovery resources for both Mac and Windows users:

Make sure you read through many of the posts on the iLounge – some folks had good results, others had poor results. There seems to be a split camp on the effectiveness of recovery programs.
Either way, strongly consider a backup strategy after you recover/replace your music:

Music wiped out of IPod and showing "no music" and can't re-sync.

Hey Claudia, look around on the home page(s). May be on any one of them. If you don't see it, look inside each app button, it could be buried in anyone of them. Your looking for an app button with little app buttons inside it. When you find it, press and hold on any app button until they all start to wiggle, then drag the music app button back to your bar or where ever makes you happy. Then tap the home button to lock / return the app buttons to normal use mode. Hope this helps. Cheers.

My iPod Touch is running on ios 7. In the last two and a half all the apps of my iPod have been suddenly wiped out twice. I had to download all the apps all over again. Why has it happened?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Safely Dismounting External Drive before Log Out or Shut Down?

    Hi folks!
Just recently set up Time Machine with a Western Digital USB 320 GB My Passport Essential portable external HDD. Back ups are working just fine, but, should I decide to keep the drive permanently connected to the computer, does each user on our Mac need to dismount (eject) the drive before logging out or shutting down?
Thanks in advance for any help offered! Much appreciated.

I have a similar problem with an OWC mercury 2 tb exhd, though I am not using it for time machine. just video production back up.
When the MacPro is put to sleep, the OWC exhd stays on and running, then when the MacPro is awakened, the drive dismounts itself with a warning. Spent 6 months (no exaggeration) sending it to OWC 3 times and also running tests, sending system reports, swapping everything one could think of. Older LaCie drives humming along throughout, no problem. The exhd does not do this when used with a macbook, or an older powerbook.
OWC finally concluded it must be something the macpro is doing or did to the drive.
This of course makes me uneasy about buying more drives, but I need them.
I have found discussions on line now describing similar issues with a Gtech drive.
So Apple! what do you say? can you help? can you reply with a copy to my email so that i am aware of it?
    Thanks!

  • How do I migrate external drive without wiping Time machine?

I bought a new external drive that is a bigger for all my media files. I back them up via time machine. I don't want time machine to treat this new drive as new files because that'll waste all the space in the time machine drive. How do I tell time machine to treat content in this new drive the same as the old one?

How do I tell time machine to treat content in this new drive the same as the old one?
You can't. The most that you can do is to copy the Time Machine backup from the old backup drive to the new one. If that's what you want to do, continue as follows.
Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.
